Asahi Black (Kuronama)

Asahi Black (Kuronama)

Production in Japan was stopped in September 2015. If you have a dark Asahi beer after that, it is Dry Black.

Bottle & can: Pasteurised.

Ingredients: Dark roasted malt; hops; rice; maize; Asahi’s pure cultured yeast.

Japan’s favourite dark beer. Brewed in Osaka, Asahi Black is made from three different roasted malts. This gives it a rich, nutty flavour and makes it incredibly smooth-drinking. Unlike other, more bitter dark beers and stouts, it’s brewed in a process called bottom fermentation, which gives it a subtle, sweet edge and smooth 5% abv.

3.0 334ml bottle. Pours a clear red-brown with a medium, short lived, tan head that laces. Sweet aroma of roasted malt and caramel. Sweet flavour of roasted malt and nuts with a dry, mildly bitter, metallic finish. Light body with a watery texture and soft carbonation.
3.3 Flaska från SB. Smak och doft av rostad malt, soja, torkad mörk frukt, kaffe med toner av lakrits. Rund och len, lagom sötma, fin beska.
2.4 Light roasted malt nose with some toasted caramel. Sweet but not overly so. Some weird notes as it warms: fishy and slightly natto like. Not bad overall though.
3.3 Tap @ Tokyo Bird, Sydney. Doesn't have the malt complexities of the German dunkels, but a good, lightish quaffing style, perfect for slamming back without thinking too much with good bar food.
3.0 Pours deep brown with slight white head. Light bready aroma and taste and touch of roastiness. Quite clean tasting.
3.6 Bottle. Clear deep amber brown color, large beige head with good retention. Aroma of burnt caramel. Taste is sweet, sticky, malty caramel. Tasty. My 100th tmavy rating.
3.0 Butelka. Ciemny prawie czarny w kolorze z palona piana ktora szybko znika. W zapachu chmielowe nuty i lukrecja.raczej wodnisty o malo skomplikowanym smaku.wyczuwa sie karmel.lukrecje ale i kawe. Dostateczny.
3.1 5%abv. In bottle at Nippon Kitchen. Black colour and few head. Very smooth and dry, has stout feels.
3.8 * Bottle. Pours dark ruby black, with tan head. * Aroma is strong, liquorice, roasted malt & coca. * Palate is rich body, very high carbonation, fine bubbles. * Taste is slightly dry, burnt dark malts, grass & liquorice. * Finish is thin & short, roasted dark malts. * Overall slightly dry, burnt dark malts, grass & liquorice, only bad point is very high carbonation.
3.4 The look of this is astounding: blackish brown, huge puffy head that laces everywhere and looks cake-like. Minimal smell - the head traps it in - but coffee, dry roasted, bread and grains. Taste is very smooth. No bite, no real bitterness, no sharp coffee or roasty taste. Just balanced, pristine. But don’t ya want a little character to your black brew?
2.7 Sampled from a 33cl bottle. Pours black with a hint of brown at the edges. Beige head and medium carbonation. Aroma of coffee and chocolate. The taste is of burnt malts but it quite quickly fades, leaving quite a thin aftertaste. Mouthfeel is also rather thin. A very clean beer, but a little bland. Good initial taste, but a little disappointing.
3.1 Bottle - deep ruby red with a foamy fizzy brown head. Aroma of treacle, hints of roasted malt, a little cocoa. Taste of chocolate, hints of molasses and dark fruits. Medium, dry body and low carbonation.
2.6 30.04.2014, 0,33l bottle @ Sushi Lovers Torvehallerne, Copenhagen: Nice light brown creamy mediumlasting head. Aroma is slightly sour-ish, minerals, dark malts, grass, licorice, hay, roasted grain. Taste is slightly dry malty, dark malts, grass, licorice, minerals, roasted grain, hay, paper. Medium bitterness, slightly dry mineraly mouthfeel. Fair enough.
3.4 Nice black color with dark brown top. Aroma dominated by the rosted malt...In this case I wouldn’t see this as a con. The aftertaste has the same roasted dark taste, makes you think of licorice and coffee. Last the carbonation is way too high very sad,now that the rest of the beer was that good.
3.0 12 oz bottle. Pours dark brown with tall, off-white head. Aroma is of plums and toasted malt. Body is medium and very crisp, way too much carbonation. Taste is similar to aroma with some herbal hops in the background. Finish is short and barely noticeable. Overall it is drinkable brew.
3.1 Not much aroma and just a little thin foam. Malty with hardroasted palate and slightly taste of english licorice. Hoppy, but still with hardroasted malt and licorice as main theme. Lovely dark lager.
2.9 Clear dark brown with a light tan head. Light molasses, rice grain, light earthiness. Very light bitterness, round malt sweetness and light bready backbone. Medium body, light chewiness. Slightly oily, medium watery finish. Fine.
3.1 surprisingly good and tasty and feels almost like a good thick stout. Black colour and a beige head
2.9 This is a dark beer that is too malty in my opinion. it has a tan head and can be overwhelming.
3.1 Bottle. Dark colour with small beige foam. Aromas of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, dark fruits. Taste has roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, hops. A bit nutty. Starts a bit sweet and finishes bitter. Dry, smooth mouthfeel. Decent beer and easy to drink.
3.9 Malty flavor hints of toast, citrus and corn. Perfect beer when you eating japanese food!
3.0 Pours clear ruby brown with amber-brown highlights, one finger of rocky tan head diminishing gradually to a thin cap and spotty lacing. (3/5) Nose is dark roasty malt, coffee and mild chocolate, very light smoke. (6/10) Taste is moderate sweet, mild bitter. (6/10) Medium bodied tending to the watery, low carbonation, off dry and mildly bitter finish. (3/5) Well, it’s better than I was expecting it to be. I mean, seriously? A Munich-style Dunkel from Japan? But all things considered, it’s pretty drinkable. Don’t get me wrong, it’s light to the point of it being a bit of a negative - some character would help here, but it’s definitely easy drinking. I had to laugh at the commercial description, though: "Unlike other, more bitter dark beers and stouts, it’s brewed in a process called bottom fermentation.” Oh, really? A corn and rice beer brewed through bottom fermentation? Sounds exotic, and not at all like a macro adjunct lager… (ahem)... (12/20)
3.1 Pretty strange dark beer. Pours dark, decent head, little lacing. Aroma of soy sauce, roasted malts, and some sweet malts. Taste seems like it’s missing something, most likely bitterness, but there are notes of roasted malts, hops, and wheat.
2.9 Bottle from Seoul Plaza. Aroma washing cloth, yet at the same time chocolate, dark malt notes, which seem promising. Very dark colour, clear. Moderately sized head, very short duration. Taste actually quite acceptable, maybe even slightly enjoyable. Simple, roasted flavours, toffee, chocolate. Initially rather sweet, eventually bitterness slides in to balance things in the finish. Okay beer. Easily drinkable.
2.6 Very flat aroma. Slightly malty with a hint of soy sauce on the tongue. Dark with a thin beige head.
3.0 I have had this before, but no notes. This time it’s a 344 (yes ’4’) ml bottle, BB Oct 2015, 5%. Black (or very dark ruby), small scummy off-white head. Aroma is nail varnish remover, sweet bubblegum malts, some roast. Body is light, foamy, low carbonation. Taste is light roasted malts, smoke, tangy sweetness, soft lager vibe, no real bitterness. Definitely tastes smoked. Easy going stuff. Decent supermarket beer.
2.9 Munich style says the bottlecap. You wont find Tokyo style beers in munich. too soon. Looks OK and has really some munich Dunkelbierstyle. rather dry, some hops and burnt malt, it makes a suitable overall impression. In terms of finesse there is still an untapped potential.
1.9 The scent is quite empty. The taste is metallic, soy sauce and a little coffee. Slightly bitter which fills the upper part of the mouth briefly. Empty beer. Sadly, too. Follow me @ Kung av öl @ Facebook for more pictures and ratings.
3.0 Black, small light brown foam ring. Light caramel aroma. Smooth taste, light sweet, light bitter. (Houston 201501)
2.1 Bottle from Seoul plaza, Bratislava. Dark brown color with medium beige head. Caramel malt, chocolate, nuts. Sweet caramel malty taste with coffee, nuts, rice. Maybe this is Japan’s favourite dark beer, but definitely not mine.
