Asheville Shiva IPA

Asheville Shiva IPA

The destroyer, the creator, the benefactor. Shiva is all these things. We set out to create an IPA that anyone can enjoy, and we think we succeeded. As the flagship beer in our lineup, we’ve yet to encounter a soul who believes contrary. A crisp, citrusy Indian Pale Ale with a light color, Shiva will destroy all your preconceptions of an IPA. A transcendentally simple malt bill accents a generous helping of Columbus hops, lending an intense floral aroma with hints of grapefruit and a pleasant bittering quality. Your palette will be lifted to higher planes of consciousness with a bittersweet finish.

3.1 Poured from a can. Dark orange in color. Slightly hazy, with plenty of carbonation and a foamy white head. Aroma of wheat and faint grassy/citrusy hops. Taste is lightly malted, sweet, mild hops, and big time bitterness that lingers. Seems a bit off balance. No detection of alcohol. Okay beer.
3.1 Dark golden in color. floral aromas and citrus. Citrus flavors with floral and some herbs. Moderately bitter aftertaste.
3.2 Keg at the brewpub on Coxe, Asheville, 17/02/15. Clear golden with a decent off white covering. Nose is pale malt, bitter orange, straw, hint of caramel. Taste comprises orange pith, light grapefruit, caramel malt, straw. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with hop bitterness. Middle of the road IPA.
3.7 Pours orange with a thin tan head very malty with a hoppy bitter finish. Smells very malty and dry. Had this one at home.
3.6 Copper color with an off white head. Floral and tropical fruit aroma. Moderate bitterness. Slight caramel malt note.
3.2 Keg @ the brewpub. Slightly hazy light orange with a white head. Aroma is somewhat subdued. Caramelized orange peel and singed grass . Pretty strong sweet flavor. Caramel candy, sugar. Growing bitterness on the finish.
3.6 4oz on tap at the brewpub. Clear orange color. Thin off-white head, leaving great, full sheets of lace. Very nice grapefruit hop, very zesty, assertive, and graepfruity. Smooth, kind of soft, lighter carbonation. More dry finish. Lightly slick. Moderate to bigger bitter taste, light to moderate sweet, mild alcohol warmth. Works well with the hops. A very nice assertive, potent, IPA. Awesome aroma, but a touch sweet.
3.9 On tap at the brewpub. Clear yellow/orange pour with a white head. Grapefruit hop aromas. Plenty of floral and grapefruit hop notes here. Good body, balance, and mouthfeel.
3.2 Location: Can at Early Girl, 1/2/15, even the breakfast places in Asheville all have craft beer! Aroma: The nose is grapefruit, earthy, and floral hop notes, with some bready malts. Appearance: It pours a mostly clear orange color, with a beige head, and medium lace. Flavor: The flavor is similar to the nose component-wise, light sweetness, and medium bitter. Palate: It has a medium body, average carbonation, and a fairly long, dry finish. Overall Impression: If there is one thing you have to appreciate about Asheville it’s how every place you go has local craft beer. I doubt there’s a restaurant/bar/gas station anywhere in this town that only has BMC. Anyway, I’m glad they have craft here, but this isn’t my favorite local IPA. Still, you could do a lot worse, and I love canned craft, so cudos for that.
3.3 Average IPA. 3rd IPA I've had from Asheville. For all the hype I've heard about it I'm coming away a little underwhelmed.
4.1 Poured from 12oz can at Edison. Orange cloudy color with frothy sticky white head. Fruity sweet candy citrus taste. Bitter after taste. All around delicious ipa especially for the lower ABV. Great work on this beer
3.8 From a bottle. Pours hazy copper with a bubbly off white head. Smells like sweet orange candy, grapefruit, and citrus hops. Tastes like nutty malt, grapefruit, orange, and dry pine hops. Smells like sweet orange candy, caramel, and grapefruit hops.
3.9 Bottle. Pours slightly hazy amber with creamy off-white head. Aroma is cereal and bready malts, orange peel, faint tropical fruits, and citrus and floral hops. Flavor is a great balance of toasted malts, citrus hops, light caramel sweetness, and some grassiness; dry finish with some bitterness lingering. Medium body and carbonation.
3.6 On tap at brewpub. Hazy copper with white head. Smell is hoppy pine and grapefruit. Taste is citrus zest, pine, grass and flowers. Dry with high bitterness and medium carbonation.
3.6 can in Asheville. very tasty IPA - refreshing and easy to drink. A drink all night IPA
3.7 Can at the corner kitchen in Asheville. Pours a cloudy orange with a white head. Aromas of tangerine and grapefruit. Taste is slightly bitter with a bit of a malty caramel aftertaste. Pretty decent though.
3.4 Floral aroma dominates the nose. A clear amber pour with no head or lacing. The taste is similar to the nose. Florals and some citrus notes. Medium body and medium carbonation. Overall, a good IPA that went well with a veggie pizza.
3.8 From a can. Liked it more than I expected to. Pours medium orange with a decent white head. Definite flowers, grapefruit, pine on the palate- sort of tastes like a dialed back version of Columbus hops. Not tons of dankness or resin. Finishes a bit bitter- hit of astringent in there- but overall pretty drinkable IPA.
2.6 Can brought back from NC. Pours a cloudy orange with white head. Aroma is really weak hops, almost malty. Taste is also missing hop bitterness. Not even close to an IPA. Though maybe an old can?? But no, only 8 days old. Just not that good.
3.6 On tap at Orange Peel in Asheville. Pours an orangish color with white head. Piney and resiny hop forward IPA.
2.8 Pint at Coxe ave location. Ok aroma. Sweet. Citrus, grapefruit’, grainy. Clean brownish Orange Color on head no real lace. Bitter flavor. Medium body creamy oily mouthfeel. Bitter Finish. It’s ok. Not wowing me. But it’s fine.
3.0 can, sweet IPA, big malty backbone. mild citrusy bitterness, sweet grapefruit juice. OK
3.3 Pours medium orange with a touch of noticeable haze. Nose is flowery and citrus. Flavor is sweet candy, some citrus, some light astringent flavors and some spicy hop flavors. Bitterness is punchy and lingers. Ok beer.
3.5 Clear. Sweet candied pineapple and floral aroma. Bready caramel notes with some residual sweetness. Lingering bitterness. Floral and candy-like hop flavors. A bit over carbed I think. Good.
2.9 Pine resin, pineapple rind, agave nectar in the nose. Syrupy / filmy texture. High bitterness, high sweetness, low apparent acidity. Pretty plain pine and fruit IPA with a lengthy syrup quality in the mouth.
3.4 Can; nice brew. The hop profile on this one gives a more robust flavor than many ipa's. Less fruit..more of a bread taste. Not a bad thing. Good brew!
3.3 Tap at brewery, okay ipa, not my favorite but fresh and hoppy and decent overall
4.0 Pretty mellowed down and balanced IPA. Straight from the cold spring mountain water. Good brew.
3.4 12-oz. can (shared by jpdurden24). Deep straw color with a uniform, one-finger, white head. Light piney aroma with some grapefruit and caramel, and a surprising slight milk tone. More malty than I expected on the first sip with heavy bread dough tones and a boatload of caramel. The dry, pinenut bitterness kicks in late but doesn’t last long. The can isn’t old (dated Oct. 3, 2013) so that can’t be the reason for the light hoppiness. Odd sharp and sweet finish that is quite abrupt. Overall, it’s OK but won’t stand out in a crowded field; it drinks more like a pale ale.
3.5 S: Mild Floral, Mildly Earthy T: Resin, Grainy M: Great Carbonation, Medium Bodied, Bitter, Mildly Drying Overall, an average IPA with some nice bitter character but doesnt push the envelope, average.
