Atlantic Coal Porter

Atlantic Coal Porter

A superb porter, hearty & dark. This one is a staff favorite, made with pale, crystal, Munich, chocolate, and black malts. The darker malts give Coal its color and rich flavor. We use Target and Willamette hops to yield a very subtle hop flavor in this porter.

We cellar this beer for close to six months before releasing it on the thirsty throngs of fans.

1.8 Bottle sample at the last tasting at Beer Market Jaffa. Thanks Alexey. Pours brown with a huge head, aroma of apples, chocolate, banana, flavor of apples, banana, oxidation, strong carbonation, light bodied.
3.8 Nice roasty porter. Rich, chocolate notes. Low bitterness. Good lacing. My first beer from this brewery.
3.7 Brown, clear color, head explodes in the glass, Hiroshima-style, filling it completely, top to bottom with a tan, lasting foam. Intense, yeasty nose. Medium body, moderate flavor, assertive mouthfeel, low heat but not flat, good balance, lingering palate. Bitter, mildly sweet background, high but not excessive acidity. Roast flavors, yeasty, Quite pleasant, never exiting but it grows on you.
2.9 Draft at the NYC craft beer festival. Deep black color. Malty cocoa flavor . Nic flavor but kind of boring
3.0 Bottle sample at the last tasting at Beer Market Jaffa. Thanks Alexey. Dark brown to black with a tan head. Aroma of roast, licorice and mild fruitiness. Bittersweetish flavor with roast, mild fruitiness and a bit of coffee. Medium-bodied, quite over-carbonated.
3.2 A dark crimson body with a tan head that had good retention. Aroma had nice roasted malts and a bit of chocolate. Some mild toasted cereal malts. Flavor was nice. A well balanced blend of roasted malts and chocolate. There was a sense of molasses in the finish. Beer seemed overly carbonated for the style. Not a great porter but not terrible either.
4.0 First taste of beer after lengthy hiatus, fresh draught poured dark with quickly dissipating foam. Roasty goodness for sure, with some slight alcohol and hop bitterness thrown in the mix.
3.1 Pours black with a huge, frothy, tan head that stays around a minute or two. Sparse lacing. Nose is a bit cola-like with a metallic hint and perhaps a note of chocolate. Taste is slightly, and pleasantly, to the bitter side, but that metallic quality comes through also. A but thin for me, lively carbonation. Decent brew, but not a favorite porter.
3.5 Draft. Pours black with thin creme head. Light carbonation. Thinner than it looks. Tasty porter
2.5 Appearance: dark cola brown, short light beige head. Aroma: light chocolate, some coffee. Taste: dark chocolate, roasty coffee, cola, hint of mellow, earthy hops and chalk. Finish: slightly dry, quickly fading wet stone. Notes: Enjoyed the punny name, but this was a puny porter. Flavors and aroma were light, palate was on the weak side.
3.1 Bottle. Pours brown with tan head. Nose/taste of roast barley, old coffee, cocoa, pine needle and old citrus. Touch of grape. Medium body.
3.3 A simple and nice porter! Nothing fancy, over the top, or frankly all that memorable about this one. There aren’t really any faults with it either. Good dark brown pour with a nice tan head that leaves some lacing. A subtle roasty aroma draws you in for a mildly bitter and touch of chocolate taste. It has a decent mouthfeel and is easily drinkable.
3.3 Bottle. Pours opaque black with little tan head. Smells of roasted malt and chocolate. Drinks smoothly with little lingering hop bitterness. Medium bodied. Tastes of wood, resin, dark bread, small amount of smoke.
3.4 From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. It is an attractive looking black pour with a long lasting off-white head. I like dark Porters like this. The aroma has a definitive chocolate character along with the dark malts. Slightly buttery. Better than average but not excellent. The body is medium. The taste is a bit of a recovery from the aroma with its chocolate character and earthy hop finish. Clean finish too. A decent, drinkable Porter but nothing extraordinary.
3.1 I see what you did there with the name... Opaque brown with very little head. Aromas of roasted malt and chocolate, but fairly muted overall despite the lack of a head. Decent chocolate flavor with a little bit of fruity notes. Bittersweet and roasted. Feels too thin in the mouth, but I like the level of carbonation and the lingering charred aftertaste. It’s fine if you want a porter and this is all that’s on the menu, but generally you can find something better.
3.0 Bottle. Dark brown, clear with a huge foamy head ... This bottle had turned a little. Overall pretty good with some roasted and coffee flavors, palate not great though thin and high carbonation
2.7 12 oz bottle....pours dark brown with a ton of beige foam...roasted malt and bitter coffee...some lacing, smells & tastes a little metallic...burnt malts throughout, and its a little unbalanced
3.5 12oz bottle. Brown-amber-black body. Thin, oily head. Rich cocoa, chocolate tones. Some mild graham crack, vanilla. A pretty nice chocolate Porter. On the fuller side of medium bodied. Sort of heavy with the specialty malts, but fitting for the style I suppose. Tasty beer.
2.3 Bottle shared by Buddy. Aroma is chocolate, nut, and musky malts. Pours black with a gigantic frothy tan head. Taste is off. Burnt cardboard takes center stage with slight chocolate and nasty coffee. Very overcarbonated which made it hard to choke this down. Pretty sure this was a spoiled bottle but I leave that to future tastings to judge.
3.4 12oz bottle-tan-black. A-roasty/cocoa/some burnt-dk malt. T-roasty/cocoa/some burnt-dk malt, earthy hops.
3.1 Bottle gifted to me from jcwatts or Eileen or maybe Dean?? Poured an okay looking super dark brown almost blackish body under a fizzy medium sized light beige head. Aroma of burnt toast, vanilla, slight chocolate sweetness. Fizzy carbonation with a creamy end on the mouthfeel over a medium body. Flavor of burnt toast, some old light coffee, milk. Meh nothing special here.
3.1 Very mild porter with some very light flavors. Just under flavored and way too mild for my taste. Little to no roastiness and flavor.
2.8 On tap at $3 Dewey’s. Pours a dark brown color with a light tan head. The aroma is of coffee, notes of chocolate, malts, and caramel. The flavor is pretty smooth but bland; roasted malt, chocolate and coffee flavors. It’s relatively sweet, and goes down pretty smooth.
3.6 Nice balance of smoky up front and sweet finish. Interesting and enjoyable.
3.7 In bouteille. Dark brow. With big tan head. Roasted beans aroma. Nice chocolate nutty chewiness.
3.3 On tap in the brewery’s tasting room. Pours a clear cola brown with a thin to medium sized beige head. Toast, roast, soft roast. Chocolate and cocoa. Gently bitter on the finish.
3.1 Aroma of dark malts and coffee. Pours dark with slight head. Carbonation low. Mouthfeel is medium to light. Flavor of roasted malts. Bitterness fairly high.
3.1 Opaque black/brown with a light head and tiny dots of lace. Taste is roasted malt; it adds black coffee midway through the palate, providing a subtle, but effective, bittering. Simple, straight-forward, quite drinkable.
2.3 Poured as part of a taster at the brewery. This porter has a classic porter appearance in the glass. I like coffee a lot, but this overemphasized the burnt/smoky flavors in a typical porter and there was no dark chocolate or underlying maltiness to help balance this out. I’ll stick with the classic Fuller’s London Porter for the same price.
4.6 Love at first taste. Chocolate mocha start with rich coffee tones and a surprising smooth finish. Good with burger or ribs.
