3.3 Draft to taster at Cincy beerfest 2017 pour opaque black with thin ecru head. Nose light roast, mild vanilla. Taste red fruit, light roast, hint of vanilla. Light bitter finish. Thin and not much coffee.
4.1 Pours a very opaque black in the glass. Great tasting coffee mocha flavor with a hint of dried fruit and nuts almost like a Chunky bar. Coffee liqueur aroma with a hint of Oreo cookies. Overall, a great tasting beer for the cool weather.
3.3 Bottle at BrewMaster’s Craft Beer Festival. Pours a dark brown with small beige head that lasts. The aroma is roasted malt, vanilla bean, cocoa. Medium body, similar flavors to nose, light dry finish, good.
3.0 Pours a dark brown with tan head. A vanilla, chocolate, and roasted malt aroma. A vanilla taste with chocolate, roasted malts and heavy delayed carbonation. A malt and grain aftertaste - heavy with carbonation.
3.7 Poured from a 12 OZ bottle into pint glass. The appearance is a mdinight black color with a medium sized tan head. The aroma is heavy on malt with some vanilla. The taste is mild malt with some coffee and vanilla. A good beer.
3.9 Very thick full head. Great mix of chocolate and vanilla flavors. Very low alcoholic aftertaste.
4.2 Bottle from Total Wine in Gainesville, VA Aroma: chocolate, coffee, vanilla, Appearance: black with a tan head Taste: medium sweetness, medium bitterness, Palate: medium body, creamy, soft carbonation, long finish, Tasty
3.1 Aromas of vanilla, chocolate and coffee. Color is a very dark brown with a small, light brown head. Taste is reasonably dry for a porter and has a slightly low bitterness for a porter. Body is on the thin side for a porter; alcohol is fairly light; carbonation is average; finish is medium to long with vanilla, coffee and chocolate. Overall not bad but the base porter is a bit thin/weak; still some interest with the vanilla, chocolate and coffee.
4.0 Really yummy porter. The vanilla added smooths out this porter and makes it complex in flavor and simple in enjoyment. Really good beer. Actually on second taste on tap, it’s a little too spicy for my liking.
3.3 A decent sweet porter with notes of vanilla balanced by the burnt, roasted coffee beans.
3.4 12oz bottle from Merriman Street Grill Pours clear dark brown with a small beige head, some lacing. Aroma of vanilla, dark malts, chocolate and coffee. Flavors of roasted malts, caramel, chocolate and vanilla Pretty good, not much coffee though
3.3 Pours opaque dark brown with hint of red, small tan head that goes quickly but leaves some skim. Nose is coffee, roast malt, roast nuts, biscuit. Palate has vanilla in and out, sometimes coming through as itself, or at least vanilla wafers, and other times creating more of a cocoa effect with the coffee. Nothing objectionable in the flavors, but they don’t always seem to blend well. Light-medium body, fine for a porter, but there’s a lot of competition in this part of the marketplace.
3.4 (En fût à Sport Shotz Detroit Airport): Graham crackers, vanille enrobante, léger chocolat et une finale évanouissante.
2.2 Dark with a flimsy beige head. Plain roast aroma and some pepper. Weird flavor on this guy, some earthy tones, more roast, notes of cola in the end. Like a crisp, watery Guinness. Tastes homebrewish to me.
3.2 Bottle. Dark brown pour with light head. Vanilla, roasted, chocolate aromas. Flavors are mostly vanilla, light sweet notes.
2.8 Pours dark with a quickly dissipating head. Strong chocolate smell. First taste is all coffee, and doesn’t waver much. I didn’t really get vanilla. It felt kind of "thin" for a porter. But it was smooth, with no bitterness. Better than I expected.
3.4 My wife says it looks like mud. It is dark but with a red hue. Strong coffee aroma. The mix with the vanilla actually makes it taste like cocoa. The taste is mildly sweet with a dark finish.
3.3 Bottle. Brown color with medium head. Aroma of coffee, vanilla ice cream sandwich , nuts, roasted malt. Light texture. Lighter bodied porter. Makes it drinkable. Creamy. Dry finish. This is a solid beer.
2.6 Bottle at home. This tastes like a Cream Soda candle. There’s a lot of vanilla flavor kicking around, but it tastes noticeably artificial and not at all pleasant. The porter base is surprisingly bland -- any coffee, chocolate, or roasted notes are muted and fade away really quickly, which only allows the artificial vanilla to come through even more. It tastes cheap.
2.7 It seems like it has quite a few flaws, so I would not think that fans of highly-rated porters like the Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald would like it. However, it is on the mild side as far as overall flavor, so it is almost like a gateway beer for people who usually don’t like beer or only like shandies. It’s ok as a mild porter.
3.0 16 oz can at Nationwide Arena. Atwater Vanilla Java Porter is a deep brown brew with a mocha head. Nose is medium coffee with strong vanilla hints. Taste is a lightly sweet and mostly vanilla coffee experience. Body has a bit of silkiness with medium body. a decent vanilla coffee beer. A bit one note, but it does that one note well.
3.3 Aroma has strong vanilla with hints of coffee. Flavor is watery but has decent vanilla and chocolate notes. Aight.
3.5 Draught at The Craft Brasserie. Not so sure what all the hate is about, this one may be a tad gimmicky but for the abv it is tasty enough, vanilla and coffee flavors stand out with a fairly smooth and soft mouthfeel. Decent.
2.2 Smells like a candle, tastes like one too. Fakey flavors in this one. Will pass next time.
4.0 This beer starts off looking and smelling great. The color is dark and robust. You definitely smell the coffee aromas also. First taste is a great chocolate malt and then it has a very (almost too) smooth finish. Overall this is a very good beer
3.3 Draft. Pours brown thin lacing. Aroma of roasted coffee and vanilla. Medium sweet taste. Medium body, light bitter finish, sticky texture.
3.2 Pours a deep brownish black on tap with thin ring of tan head. Aroma and taste of good vanilla and coffee notes. Thinner mouth, but solid beer, better than the ratings here.
3.3 Poured a deep black color with aromas of light roast, coffee, and some vanilla. Flavors are light chocolate, and coffee with some roast with lots of vanilla, decent overall.
2.9 Bottle. Thin black pour. Vanilla over powers the coffee aroma and taste. Good flavor just too much vanilla. Should have aged the beer on vanilla beans instead of using extract. Far too strong flavor with the extract. Not bad but could definitely be better.
3.0 On tap. Comes dark brown with a decent tan head. Aroma of vanilla and coffee. Taste is vanilla, coffee, roasted malt, and chocolate. As others have noted, it is thin and artificial. Still drinkable.
