This is a dopplebock high-gravity lager. This one is big, black and sweet. It’s malty character is derived from two caramel malts along with Munich malt to create the smoothest high-gravity beer this side of the pond.

3.0Bottle to glass. Dark pour. Looked good but generically bland in taste. Toward thin side. Wanted more
3.1pours unclear medium dark brown, orange tint, with a nice reviving light beige head, some retention and lacing. dark chocolate malts, burnt caramel, coca-cola, woodsy vanilla and coconut, dates and figs but borderline rotten fruits, grass, pepper, clean german yeast. light carbonation, light to medium body - oily, semi-sweet and very lightly astringent grassy-woodsy finish. a tad overdone somewhat still.. a-o-k.
3.312oz bottle that poured almost black..no head to speak of. the aroma was interesting mildly sweet malts and some dark fruits. as it go warmer you did get some hints of caramel. the body was quite thin for a dopplebock. I was expecting a better flavor out of this and I was disappointed. light bodied thin and just light flavors. $10 for a 4pack was really not worth it.
3.5Very faint aroma of bready, toffee sweetness. You really have to get your nose in there. Pours an impenetrable black, you can only see a little light when held right up to a bulb. No lace or head to speak of. Nice, if typical Dopplebock taste. Medium sweet followed by pleasant bitterness. Cool label.
2.7Bottle. Pours a dark brown with garnet highlights and a high, fine-grained cinnamon head. Nose is molasses, pumpernickel, baking chocolate, dried fruit, and nutmeg. Sweet up front, with a chocolate/caramel tinge; while that note is nice, there’s just not a lot of complexity that follows it. It’s good for what it is, but there’s very little depth to it; the mouthfeel is very nice and smooth, however. Finish is short and thin. Fair.
3.6I really liked this! My first dopplebock. A new fav. Nice coffee notes, deep dark color, but not too heavy.
3.4on tap @ Party Town / Florence KY --- Clear deep brown with a dense head that gradually drops to a thick cover, wide bands of lace. Taste is roasted caramel malt that glides effortlessly through the palate to a lightly bittered finish. In one sense, simple, but it is well done and quite tasty. It also hides the 9% abv so well that it is a bit dangerous. Recommended.
3.2From bottle. Dark dark red, almost black. No head. No lacing. Aroma of plums and dark fruits. Taste the same, some caramel and nice maltiness. Sweet. A bit flat. No noticeable hops.
3.4Big dark and malty. Caramel, toffee, dark fruit and spice. Hides the alcohol well.
3.6Pours almost black, with a tan head that rings the glass. Nice malty aroma that carries to the nutty maltiness in the taste. Nice mouth feel, easy after taste. Not a bad beer! Never got the 9% taste I expected.
2.5I dont know what to say, I was expecting so much more, the Germans dont have anything to worry about with this one
2.9Nearly black, just a hint of violet in the head. Caramel and licorice hit the nose, then a huge flavor combination of roasted grain, sweet bread, and chocolate pudding. Body turns thin in the finish. Overall missing that classic spice note and more subdued roasted malt. Doesn’t match up to the Kulminator or Korbinian...
3.6In bottle. Chocolate and caramel nose, medium off white head. Body is medium to dark brown. Light body, roasty, nutty flavors, some chocolate. Good beer.
3.612 oz bottle from Giant Eagle in Pittsburgh. Tasted more like a strong brown ale than a dopplebock. Could have been stronger in taste in alcohol, as the name ’voodoo’ would imply. I guess I’m disappointed.
3.8(bottle) pours a deepest brown colour with a frothy beige head. aroma of heavy raisins and brown sugar, with lots of kiwi and some sugar icing. flavour is mostly brown sugar and lightly roasted malts, with a hint of walnuts and a pronounced peachy fruitiness. medium to heavy-bodied with average carbonation.
2.6Pretty weak overall, appearance is the only thing going for this beer. Not , much in terms of nose, flavor or palate. Hints of copper and raisin. Decanted into a mug from 12 oz bottle. Not much going on....pass.
3.3Dark brown, a little deeper than most ive had for its style. Adds more choclate flavors akin to a porter, balancing out a little of the bready richness. Average.
3.612 oz bottle. Pours a dark, dark brown with ruby hues. There is a thin white-ish head that leaves spotty lace down the side of the glass. The aroma is very sweet. There's a lot of caramel and malt, but it's not overly complex. The flavor is a pretty similar fashion. A sweet caramel and maltiness. It's pretty thin, so it leaves a little to be desired in the mouth feel, but overall it's pretty good.
3.0on cask at Buckeye Beer Engine, this packs a punch for a lager.. but not all that interesting to drink, it helps being on cask with smoothness for a 9.5% beer. but your basic malt profile leads to a boring beer.
3.5Pours a near black brown. Aroma of syrup and sweet sugars. Taste is sweet up front and moves quickly to smokey. A little weak overall bit not bad.
3.5Bottle at b-laws. Jet black color. Aroma is molasses, caramel, roasted malt. Medium body. Creamy texture. Sweet notes. Alcohol is somewhat hidden. Not bad.
3.9bottle. brown/black with a small tan head. raisiny, malty, bready, dark fruit, toffee aroma. full bodied. malty, rich, nougaty, fruity flavors. nice job
3.6Brown/black pour with tan head. Aroma of dried fruit and ash. Sweet malt and dried fruit. A sweet finish followed by a light bitter. Pretty decent. 9.5 well hidden.
3.3Quite tasty. I truly enjoy this beer. Smooth drink and fairly clean finish for a darky.
3.9Pours deep brown with a light brown head. Aroma is sweet bready malt. Taste is sweet chocolate-caramel malt followed by a hop finish. Very well-balanced and alcohol disguised.
3.0bottle - Pours dark brown with a small tan head. It has a malty aroma with a slight hint of chocolate. The taste is very sweet with not much going on. It’s medium bodied and finishes sweet. Overall it’s just okay.
2.8Lopez brought me this one back from his roadtrip.. thanks again, brutha! Pours a dark brown, little bit of a head that disappeared quickly. Nose is malty, hints of butterscotch. Mouth is medium bodied, medium sweet, malty, some diacetyl, toasted bread, caramel. Not a world-beater, but not bad either. I’d drink another one. Prost!
2.9bottle. Light brown with small head. I’m not a big fan of the dopplebock, so take my rating accordingly. Seems fairly average for the style.
2.7Disappointing chocolate malt flavor that seems one dimensional, along with a rather indifferent body--not thin, but not attractive. A little oily. The alcohol provides a little tingle but doesn’t intrude. The finish strikes me as a little metallic. Bottle.
3.7Dark brown full bodied, bread, roasted caramel malts, light bitterness come together in this Doppelbock. High alcohol, but, easy on the palate.
