Augustijn Blond

Augustijn Blond

Bottle: Unfiltered

Contract brewed since 1978 by Van Steenberge for the Augustinian monastery at Stephen’s Church in Ghent using the original yeast culture. Sold outside of Belgium as St Stefanus, after the church, to differentiate it from beers that may be made by other Augustinian communities. The monastery receives money from each sale.

Ingredients: Pale, Pilsener and Munich malts; brewing sugar; Saaz, German Hallertau; additional bittering hops.

Partially filtered after primary fermentation, then cool matured for four weeks. Filtered and then reseeded with Brett and another yeast, and warm conditioned for two weeks. Bottled and stored for a minimum three months before distribution.

3.5 Amber, hazy beer with a two finger high, white head. Yeast, spices, honey, fruity, citrus, banana and peach. Sweet caramel malt and light bitter ending.
3.2 Amber, cloudy with a medium white head. A fruity and some honey aroma. Light bitter with a fruit and yeast finish.
3.7 Pours opaque amber gold with a massive soapy white head. Aroma is bubblegum and cloves. Taste is mildly sweet with more bubblegum, lemon, yeast and bready malt. Active mouthfeel and tangy. Very drinkable.
3.7 Oklar mörkgul med fint vitt skum. Doftar fruktigt, jästigt, lite kryddigt. Smaken fyllig, söt. Eftersmaken söt, kryddig, lite fruktig, jästsmak på slutet.

3.5 St Stefanus Blonde
3.7 Bottle from Drinks Vanuxeem, Ploegsteert, Belgium. Label: Zwijntje 8%. I cannot rate this beer under the Zwijntje name but apparently it is the same beer also known as Augustijn Blonde. However i am still unsure of this as one is 7.5% and the other 8% abv. Pours a hazy golden/amber colour with a medium sized foamy white head. Aromas of bananas and cloves, some peppery spice with a hint of bubblegum and candied sugar. Taste has more bananas, cloves and peppery spice with added hints of apples and pears and a touch more sweet candy notes on the finish. Thin to medium body with a fair amount of sparkly carbonation. Above average Belgian Blond. Quite nice.
3.6 Thick, lovely head. Carbonation is ok, could be better. Very mild aromas, can’t pick up much. Flavors are mild, tiny bit of hops but that’s pretty much it. Very easy to drink, cannot taste the 7 % at all. I would have guessed a pilsener, had this been a blind tasting!
3.6 0.33 draft @ Broc Bar Clear, gold with a small, white head. Aroma of yeast and spices. Taste is sweet, yeasty, spicy, balanced. Medium, slick, lively. Finish is medium long and pleasantly balanced. Overall, it might be the place and outdoor atmosphere, but it is a decent brew.
4.0 Pours a hazy golden color, raising a large white head. The head fades quickly. The initial aroma is a sweet caramel. The flavor is a bold sweetness that leaves a slightly bitter after taste. This is a beer that quickly grows on the drinker and is quite pleasant with a rich dinner.
3.5 Great beer with bitter sweet aftertaste. A decent strong pale, nothing bad to say about, alcohol hidden and medium body, nothing out of the ordinary
3.4 0.33 l bottle from Le petit Belge, Zagreb. Hazy golden, small off-white head. Spicy yeasty aroma, doughy, peppery, apricot and peach. Sweetness, slightly sugary, fruity. Peppery finish, slightly sweet. Alcohol hidden. Medium body, moderate carbonation.
3.6 A: Golden, slightly hazy, small head which disappeared fairly quickly, left some lacing. S: Phenols, yeast, esters. T: Yeast, berries, starch & phenols. M: Decent carbonation, medium to heavy body. O: Unmistakably out of the van Steenberge stable, not their best, but nice enough.
3.7 Reminds me of tripel karmeliet
3.5 Copenhagen 26/4 2021. 33 cl bottle from Beerdealer web-shop. Drawing of a Monk stirring the wort in front of a church window on the label. The version I am drinking holds an ABV of 7. Pours slightly unclear golden amber with a big white head. A bit bubbly. Settles as 1 cm thick layer of foam covering the surface of the beer. Clinging to the sides of the glass. Substantial lacing. Aroma is medium intense with a sweet fruity odor mingling with sour slightly citric notes and a bit of alcohol. Pear, banana, honey and sugar. Caramel. Sourish grainy notes. Citrus. Whiff of alcohol. Medium strong carbonation. Slightly thick, oily, lively, tingling texture. Flavor is medium intense with a fairly strong sweetness followed by a more moderate sourish bitterness. Aftertaste is sweetish with a boozy streak. Lingers for a while. Finish is semi-dry. Decent if somewhat run of the mill Belgian Strong Ale.
2.9 33cl bottle from an online store. Labeled as "St. Stefanus" belgisch abdijbier here. Pours dark and hazy amber, orangish with creamy white foam which fades quickly. Smell is kinda weak with notes of sweet caramel and yeast, some alcohol. Taste is rather sweet with malt, syrup/sugary, yeast, honey, fruity and spicy. Also made with rice. Tastes sweet and incredibly easy to drink with notes of fruits and nice lively carbonation, almost made me think of weizen sweet but strong at 7% abv. It's nothing incredibly remarkable but i like beers like this, strong good enough flavour and easy to drink. Good, sweet and very drinkable.
3.8 Beetje zoet, geen sterke smaak, aangenaam
3.4 Old rating from 10-12-15 - As Zwijntje, 330ml bottle, 8.0 ABV brought back from Belgium. It pours a clear golden colour with a dull white head. Aromas is of malt with caramel. Tastes of wheat, some banana, orange, lemon, toasted malts, spices, caramel, & toffee. Aftertaste is of light spices, malts and a little kick from the alcohol. Overall a decent Belgium strong ale.
3.3 zapach przyjemny, intensywny, trochę przypraw, trochę cukru trzcinowego, dojrzałe jabłko, świeża mąka, odrobina suszonych ziół i całkiem przyjemny alkohol. kolor złoty, głęboki, opalizujący, piana biała, dość obfita, średnio trwała. w smaku przyprawy, lekkie posmaki wiejskie, stodoła, koń, dojrzałe, ale nie słodkie jabłko, trochę drewna owocowego, lekki jasny karmel, odrobina płatków kukurydzianych, trochę alkoholu w tle. goryczka niska do umiarkowanej, suszone zioła, drewno, lekki wytrawny koniak. w ustach lekko grzeje. nasycenie wysokie
3.9 Bottle pour from Belgian Ale Tasting pack from Total Wine & More, Burlington. Appearance is hazy dark yellow-light brown with nice sparkle, finger-width off-white foamy head with decent retention and light soapy lacing. Aroma is nice wheat, fruity esters, Belgian yeast. Taste follows aroma with nice balance of wheat, fruit and Belgian yeast. Mouthfeel is light side of light-to-medium bodied with thin, frothy texture, soft carbonation and sweet finish as taste. Overall, all elements are well balanced and well crafted. Enjoyable.
Lichte smaak koriander.
3.3 Bottle. Pours hazy gold with a white head. Belgian yeast, some fruitiness, spice. Good.
3.6 Big frothy white head stayed on an unclear light amber body. Belgian yeast & fruity aroma. Medium bodied, soft over the tongue with a nicely carbonated back. Peach, banana, Belgian yeast, confectionery & lightly hopped tastes. Quality
4.0 Bought as St Stefanus Blonde in UK.A million times better than the Blanche Beer. Sweet and easily drunk. Nice.
3.5 Opalizujący bursztyn, lekko mętna herbata. Piana spora. Pachnie alkoholem, owocami. Po belgijsku, dużo fenoli i estrów. Mocno wysycone. Słodkie. Alkoholowe. Ale i goryczka jest. Przyjemny i poprawny belg.
3.7 Draft @ Caen. Cloudy orange golden, creamy offwhite head. Nicely balanced quite sweet blonde, some peach/apricot fruitiness honey, vanilla, yeasty gooey, faint peppery. Good body, medium carbonation.
3.2 I don't know anything about beer, but i like to drink. I guess that's is a good starting point.
