Avery Ale to the Chief

Avery Ale to the Chief

We the Brewers of Avery Brewing Company, in order to form a more perfect ale, require a new leadership that can liberate us from our quagmires in foreign lands; embrace environmentally sound energy alternatives to imported oil; heal our ailing health care system; free us from tyrannical debt and resurrect the collapsing dollar. We hereby pledge to provide him or her with an ample amount of our Presidential Pale Ale to support in the struggle for the aforementioned goals! Hail to the New Chief!

Not an "Imperial" pale ale, this is a democracy. It’s Presidential! Take the all-American pale ale, a bipartisan blend of malt and hops, increase to both Avery Brewing standards, and then, of course, dry hop the result with that most quintessential of American hops, Cascades, and you get this... Ale to the Chief. A brew worthy of the Oval Office! Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops and yeast.

4.1 Bottle from WOB. Caramel color with three finger white head. Caramel sweet malt, floral hop and spice aroma. Good earthy malt/hop balance coupled with something sweet and a little spice. There’s got to be some cream in here too. Very smooth.
3.8 Aroma is malt bubble gum fruit. Flavor is Piney cleaning solution malt, hops bittersweet. Good body. Strange finish. Weird beard. Not my favorite beer but not bad though.
4.1 Aroma is citrus/floral, pine and Cascade hops. The flavor is citrus/Cascade hops, biscuit malts, caramel/honey and a tart/bitter/alcoholic finish.
3.3 Deep orange. Malty nose with herbal hops. Flavor is malty candy with mild fruit and herbal lemon bitterness.
3.6 [9/7/2016] On tap at Churchkey : Hazy amber body with medium head. Nose is hoppy and spicy. Taste is hops, caramel, plummy. Nice texture and good finish.
3.6 650ml bottle from Woodmans in Waukesha. Shared with bananabi11. Copper pour with no head. Thick citrus and pine. Overripe fruits. Overlayered and super dry hopped, unfortunately not too well blended or too smooth. Medium to full bodied, with some alcohol presence. Finishes fruity bittersweet. 13.7
3.5 Rich amber/cider color; Medium creamy body; Aroma of sweet malt, some yeast, floral/fruit, & citrus; Flavor of sweet malt, caramel/syrup, fruit, pine hops, and some spice; Dry finish; A bit too sweet - but decent overall.
1.9 So, I’m looking at the comments from everyone else and wondering if this was a bad bottle... because I’ve never said this about any Avery beer: this is subpar piss. Tastes like an old, stale and oxidized IPA. Maybe I got the bottle intended for Donald Trump?
3.7 Bomber. Tropical fruit hop aroma with notes of citrus and floral hops, caramel and grass. Pours amber colored with a large, non-retentive off white head that also has some lacing. Starts with caramel malt and grassy hop flavors with a bit of floral hops as well. Finishes dry and mildly bitter with tropical fruit and citrus hop flavors and just a touch of pine. Good stuff.
3.9 Malty slightly sweet aroma with a grassy, medicinal, dank, slight tropical hop aroma. Taste is a full range of hops, dank, piney, tropical, grassy. Malt balances the hops really well. It is very hoppy but not overpowering or too bitter. Finishes dry. Really lots of flavor in this one and a very enjoyable double IPA. Has maharaja qualities. Maybe slight dry finish, not bitter but dry. Real nice overall though.
3.2 Some roast and some light citrus. Hazy amber pour with ok head and lacing. Light bitter finish. Easy drinking. Tap at Churchkey.
3.9 Bottle from Spec’s. Clear copper-amber-mahogany with a foamy cream-colored head and a fair amount of lacing. Aroma of caramel, grass, rye toast, and resin. Taste is sweet and bready with just a touch of hop bittering. Very smooth medium-full bodied. Nice.
4.0 Bomber into a pint glass. Pours a dark brown, with hints of yellow. Moderate khakihead which persists, leaving good lacing. Nose is caramel and hops, and the taste follows. Caramel up front, yielding to hop bitterness on the short finish. Mouth feel is medium, with moderate carbonation. Decent ale, nothing spectacular.
4.0 Glad to see this one. Deep amber pour with a frothy off white head. Aroma was piney hop oils, dark fruit, caramel, resin. Flavors were slightly sweet but well balanced. Lots of resiny hops, bits of caramel, pine, touch of toast. Mouthfeel was slick and oily, medium plus. Nice, lingering bitter finish to keep everything else in line. Tasty stuff.
3.7 22oz bottle. Clear red brown color with a white head. Hops tropical fruit aroma. Melon resin hops juicy flavor . Medium body.
3.1 Orange hue with a thick off white head. Dull sweet aroma. Light to medium bodied starts smooth and a bit bready. Second half is dry and a bit spicy/hop
3.5 Brand new version of the beer 2016 re release 8.1% abv .... Pale to almost clear copper pour with a thin white head and light lacing.... Aroma of piney hops, biscuity malts, buttery and dank with some citrusy hops .... Taste is of light piney and dank hops, biscuity malts, caramel malt, some citrusy and floral notes .... Has a lightly dry hopped finish and a bit of booze lingers .... Not very impressive Ale to the chief
3.6 Draft at Bru Craft. Slightly hazy copper pour with soft beige foam. Nice lace. An odd mix. Hoppy dark red amber fruit. Plums and prunes. Mandarins. Key limes. Pinecones. Red liquorice. Burnt blood oranges. Charred plum pudding. Fish scales. Black currants. Hot spicy finish ultimately hides the high ABV.
3.5 Bomber. Clear amber with a foamy, beige head that lasts and laces. Aromas of pine, caramel, grapefruit, light orange and herbal notes. Flavor is the same, sweet caramel, bitter pine, some grapefruit and orange with some heat and herbal notes on the end. Medium plus bodied, smooth with a dry, slightly bitter and hot finish.
3.7 22 oz bottle poured, wearing the signature avery foil. 2009 bottle with pale ale on the bottle, so i had my doubts. Impressed for sure. Hop presence up front, but less than fresh. Orange fruit finish. Held up pretty will I’d say.
3.6 Bottle pour at Brouwer’s, this beer has been on my eye for a bit now, listed as the 2009, bold bit of flavor, not really sure of what flavors though. But it is awesome. Golden copper pour semisweet flavor not sure how this aged taste decent but makes me wonder about the original.
2.6 Bottle, back in the day (don’t remember exact vintage, but it was fresh). Filtered amber-auburn body has a beige head atop, fairly large and slowly receding to cover. Pine, dry citrus, iced tea and unfermented sugars in the nose all show your typical aggressive, lacking-of-elegance Avery strong ale from back in the day. Clean, though resinous and full of sourish, strongly toasted grain notes. Very fruity, as well. Hard textured crystal malts, bitter, dry grapefruit and pine with sweetness balancing, I suppose, though it’s a mix of unfermented sugar and sweet-sour toasted malt notes that don’t exactly soften the blow of the punchy, aggressive hops. More iced tea on the end, clean yeast and fruitiness with a ton of lingering orange rind and some definite booze. Don’t actually know if Avery has cleaned up their act in the past 5-7 years, as a steady stream of beers like this turned me very off to this brewery.
3.2 Bottle from SJ trade. Nice notes of caramel, orange peel, hop, rye and bread. Not a bad brew
3.7 super hoppy ale with piney notes and nice bitter hoppy bite. pours amber in color with a thick creamy head. had a bottle pour at home. excellent beer from avery. smells hoppy and piney
3.9 "pours a pretty clear amber...fluffy white head, lots of lace. nice looking beer. smell is quite hoppy as expected. feel is very full for any pale, medium overall. very smooth. carbonation is spot on. hops are prevelant in the flavor (juicy and piney), but there is a sweet fruity malt backbone as well. doesn’t work quite as well as the better 2IPAs with the 8.75% abv (maybe better at 7-8%) but it’s a very good beer with a nice finish, too. I’ll try not to dock it points for being an "Obama beer" :o"
3.5 Bottled (backlog). Amber colour, small creamy off-white head that leaves some lace. Aroma is citrus, mild tropical fruits as well as some grass and sweet maltiness. Flavour is floral, fruity, caramelly and a bit toffeeish with some earthy notes.
4.0 Pours a nice clear amber color with white head. Floral notes are very dominant on the nose, with some citrus, and light fruit; follows onto the palate. Finishes with a little pine and some nice hop resin.
3.4 22oz bottle in a tulip. Pours hazy amber with a lacy, off-white head. Aroma of floral and lightly citrusy hops, a decent amount of caramel, pale, and cereal malts, some dough, and light alcohol. Flavor about the same with a weird malty finish. Average texture. A decent beer, but my bottle might have been a little old.
3.6 2009 bottle. Held up well. Malts were toasty, dark fruits and a hint of berry. The hops were gone. Solid strong ale but would have liked to had fresh.
3.9 Backlog rating 3-19-2009 (Bottle) The appearance is a medium sized off-white frothy, fizzy head, hazy body with an orange hue combined with a golden tint, visible carbonation, and a good amount of lacing. The aromas I detected are caramel, malt, citrus and pine hops. This beer taste like the aromas, but without the pine hops. The palate is slightly tingly and this is a medium bodied beer. Overall, this is a very well brewed beer, quaffable, worth trying, and definitely a beer that I would drink again.
