Avery Anniversary Fifteen

Avery Anniversary Fifteen

15 years of brewing! You know what’s been the best part lately? Tons of experimentation! For the last couple of years, we’ve been working with several strains of brettanomyces (wild yeast). We found one and deemed it the best for it’s tart flavor and funky, fruity aroma. Adding black mission figs for a subtle jammy aspect, hibiscus flowers for an herbal bouquet and hazy sunset hue, and white pepper for a bit of spicy twang, we’ve created FIFTEEN - a unique drinking experience inspired by the wild farmhouse ales of Belgium. Though immensely complex today, more flavor will emerge with time, so throw a few bottles in your cellar for future celebrations. Thanks to all of you who have made our 15-year ride possible! Peace to all and follow your dreams!

Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, malted wheat, hops, black mission figs, hibiscus flowers, white pepper, and a very unique strain of brettanomyces yeast.

3.6 Pours a slightly hazygolden with a medium white head. Aroma has nice bretty funk and a touch of hibiscus. Flavor has some fig but a bit of a band aid note...subtley spicey. Mouthfeel is light and silky with a dry bitter/band aidy/bretty finish.
2.6 At Avery Sour Fest 2013. Hazy golden under a thin white foamy head. Aroma has some sour blonde malt as well as some chile(?) and tomato paste. Flavor is kinda the same. Light sourness with some weird tomato paste tones, some sort of chile, and an odd hoppiness I couldn’t put my finger on.
2.8 Backlog rating 3-20-2009 (Bottle - Bottled in April, 2008) This beer’s appearance is a medium sized white fizzy, frothy head with good retention, transparent body with a yellow hue, fizzy carbonation, and a good amount of lacing. The aromas are floral, spicy, fruity, sweet, and funky/farmhouse. The taste of this beer is funky/farmhouse, spicy, fruity and dry. The palate is smooth and this is a light-medium bodied beer. Overall, I did not enjoy this beer due to the funky/farmhouse taste and it is a beer that I will not drink again.
3.4 22 oz bottle shared by Drew. Thanks, dude! Pours a richly glowing golden orange hue, with frothy whitish head atop, laces ok overall. a good glow, mellow haziness. Aromas are cereal, coconut, oxidized and papery. Gentle brett, funk, and fruit. A kiss of honey, cereal, and doughy. Gentle rind, touches of brett, gentle funk. Bready, sweet, and a bit older. Initial is mellow bodied, thinned a bit with age. Some dryness, funk, and straw. Gentle doughy, some honey, crisp bready. A bit of sweetness, gentle warmth. Crisp, dry, quite drinkable in the end if a bit warm. Some oak, gentle sweetness, bit of citrus. Mellow honey, straw, grass, and clover a bit. Solid, aged, still well put together with mellow dryness, sweetness, fruit. Not bad.
4.1 This beer is doing great. Horse blanket is starting to peek out of the fruit and honey. Getting pretty dry too.
3.0 Bottle from Joseph Canals. Pour is a golden brown with large white head. Aromas of weird sour funk, nuts, sweet malts, and hops. Taste is bretty, apples, caramel toast, citrus. Light to medium carbonation with a silky mouth/finish.
2.6 Straw colored. Little nose. Saison like spicyness, brett characteristics. Mouthfeel is fine if a bit overcarbonated.
3.4 A: Crystal clear and yellow, the beer begins teeming with effervescence and opens with a thick white head. The bubbles diminuendo to stillness, while the head exhibits staying power and coats the glass in white lacing. A very impressive appearance. S: funk, brettanomyces, apples, T: Subtle spices, apples, brettanomyces. There is a slighty astringent taste, with notes of rubber and ethanol. The beer has a sour character, but it is by no means puckering. M: Pretty smooth drinking, in spite of some subtle off flavors. D: An above average sour. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 11-05-2010
3.3 22oz bottle-pours hazy yellow with a dissipating white head. Aroma is brett, acidic, spice, light malt. Taste is brett, acidic, spice, light malt-bready. Interesting.
3.6 22 ounce bottle with gold foil into tulip glass, bottled in April 2008. Pours slightly cloudy golden amber color, with a nice 2-3 finger fairly dense white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Some nice and thick soapy lacing on the glass, with a fair amount of carbonation streaming up. Aromas of big tart apple, grape, pear, lemon, hay, grass, fig, bread, pepper, herbal, floral, funk, and yeast spices. Some fairly nice aromas, with good strength and complexity. Taste of big apple, grape, pepper, pear, grass, herbal, fig, clove, lemon, floral, bread, and yeast spices. Fairly dry on the finish; with lingering notes of pepper, lemon, bread, grape, grass, and yeast spices on the finish for a bit. Slight tartness on the finish, but not anywhere near what I was expecting from the aromas. Medium-high carbonation and medium body; with a fairly crisp and prickly mouthfeel that fits well. Alcohol is extremely well hidden with pretty much no warming present at all. Quite easy to drink, but is still a sipper. Overall this is a nice and quite enjoyable spiced wild ale. Good amount of flavor complexity and balance; and very smooth to drink. It held up well to age as expected.
3.7 22oz bottle thanks to a very cool bartender @ Brouwer’s Cafe. Dull orange pour with some fluffy white head.. Nose is fruity, earthy, and funky - flavor is similar with a peppery finish. Not sure how this tasted fresh but it’s aged quite nicely!
3.8 Avery put together a crazy beer. The white pepper, hibiscus and brett gives this beer a unique aroma and taste. Aroma is citrus and spice. Taste is funk with spice and a lot of floral aftertaste. I don’t taste any of the figs that were added. This is a really unique beer.
3.2 Bottle. Funky wet straw, lemon, spice aroma. Hazy yellow orange with a moderate fizzy head and some lacing. Sweet fruit, tart citrus, spice, and yeasty/funk flavor, soapy bitter finish. Light bodied, fairly carbonated.
3.6 Pours hazy peach color with some small white rimming. Aroma is bretty and citric sour. Flavor is kind of mild with sweetness. A little bit of brett funkiness, but not as much as the nose would entail. Flavor is mild and body is light.
4.1 Kinda funky in the nose, with honey and lemon, yeast and mild sweetness. Medium golden clear to hazy, with white lacing head. Medium watery body with heavy carbonation. Starts dry and mildly tart, funky with some lactic and citrus character. Bretty. Smooth. Very nice Belgian.
3.6 Draft at C AH. Pours an opaque golden tan color with little head and lacing. Nose is funky and fruity with yeasty ketones. First sip is nice pale malty flavors with yeast spicyness. finish is slightly brettish with nice lingering tones.
3.3 Bottle. Pours a cloudy yellow with a medium white head. Fruity pineapple aroma with hints of spices and brett. Fruity flavor with spices. Hints of brett and some hops.
3.5 22oz in a giant frosty mug - pours golden caramel with moderate amount of white foam and noticeable lacing. Nose is spicy and fruity. Aroma is yeast, simple malts, pepper and fruit. Taste is sweet to the lips and finishes neutral (hence some hops). Body is medium and texture is thin and slick. This is probably the lightest Belgian Ale I’ve ever had. I could do without the pepper.
3.4 been saving this one for a while. brett and barnyard aroma all the way, yeah! golden, hazy with little bits and pieces floating around. high carbonation when opened up leading to a thick pillow of head that did dissipate but only to the point of a thick blanket of white. very tart and bretty taste. thinner body than what I had expected. i am mainly getting spice and funk in the flavor, no sour. different than what i had expected from the aroma. thin, sticky, oily feel on the palate. it’s like the body dissolves in my mouth shortly after tasting. brett bitterness sticks around for a bit, though. although i do enjoy it, it is not what i was expecting as far as flavor goes. it has been 3.5 years the since bottling date and this is the first bottle i have tasted, so i personally cannot compare fresh and aged (damn!).. but i must say the aroma rocks and is my favorite aspect of this beer by far.
3.5 On tap at flying saucers eleventeen party. Pours a clear orange amber with a near white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of fruit with some tropical notes and some sweet grains. Flavor begins with breads and grains but finishes with light and tropical fruits. A bit sweet with a good yeast backbone.
3.4 Pours a golden color with a huge amount of white head. Has a brett and sour nose to it. Taste is light funk, belgian yeast, some light fruit in there as well. I was hoping it would be more sour but wasn’t really sour at all.
2.9 Hazy yellow with a thick white head. Sour with spicy tones. Malt, sour, spices and fruit. Medium body with a long sour and bitter aftertaste.
3.9 Huge bretty flavors without the sourness, lighty bitter on the finish, aroma is figgy and awesome
3.2 Thanks to santa for this. Pours a clear golden yellow with a frothy white head. Aroma is spices, figs, pepper and yeast. Taste is a bit of a mess. I don’t know if it’s past it’s prime but this was a little of a letdown. Yeast backbone, with a load of spice, fig and pepper. Big mouthfeel but a little out of balance, the spice takes over and doesn’t let go.
3.6 Pours a golden beery color with a huge bubbly white head that sticks around forever. Smells of wet horse blanket, spicy Belgian yeast, lemons, a bit phenolic. Taste is kind of rough! Really bretty character with some solvent, medicinal and phenolic. Some citrus and spices thrown in there as well. Carbonation is high, body is medium to thin, mouthfeel is syrupy. I guess its decent for an all brett beer, but I really would have liked some acid in this one. I didn’t taste any of the figs or white pepper either. This bottle is older, maybe its faded. This actually grew on me as I drank it, but really this one is nothing special.
4.2 Bottle in Minneapolis. Light golden yellow appearance with a foamy white head. Somewhat sour, slightly wild (Brett) Belgian ale aroma. Bretty, wild Belgian Saison flavor. Slightly sour, slightly fruity, wild Belgian ale flavor. Slightly sour, mostly sweet Belgian ale finish. Quite nice.
3.4 22oz bottle. Golden color. This bottle has aged since it was made in 2008. 3 years? Nothing but the funk. All I smell is Brett. Basement and Attic. Some lemons, some spice, mostly musty blanket. Flavor has a light thirst-quenching tartness, some wheat malt. Very dry, to a Brut level. May have been aged too long. It is all Brett at this point.
3.6 On Tap at Rackhouse, Denver 16/09/2010 Sour aroma. Golden coloured and slightly hazy in appearance. Fruity and sour with a dry and yeasty finish.
