Avery Anniversary Fourteen

Avery Anniversary Fourteen

For 14 wonderful years, we have been creating libations for ourselves in the hope that some others out there would share our eccentric palates and support us. Many thanks to all of you who do! Here is yet another quirky brew: a very dark and different, dry-hopped ale. Style? hard to say, you decide. Just expect massive molasses maltiness, limitless fruits on the nose and an imposing floral & zesty dry-hop finish. Peace to all and follow your dreams!

3.8 Bottle given to me by Plovmand thx..... it pours dark brown with a medium thick creamy brown head..... the aroma is dark fruits, raisins, sweet chocolate and caramel... the flavor is roasted malt, raisins, chocolate and creamy soft body....... sweet and some alcohol in the finish.... nice and lovely....
3.6 This was a share @ woodshop Classix Aug 27th 2011. Notes are as follows: Dark beer with some give towards purples, a bruise in a glass. Deep dark fruit notes with a tad bit of swirling raisin muskiness. Taste is very rustic dark fruit, lots of age seems present in this. Figs and prunes linger with an in check sweetness. The prune is in between old plum and ripe prune, quite nice. The flavor and feel is pretty good, reasonably creamy despite a lack of carb. The flavor is still strong in the beer, but I would crack this if you have a bottle. I don’t see this getting better.
3.7 Finally cracked my bottle of this open. Pours a red-hued, dark brown body with a large light brown head. Aroma of chocolate, sweet malts, and bread intially and then molasses and rum later with a faint hint of citrus hops. Flavor is similar - the malts have a light roast to them to go along with hints of cocoa powder, raisin, and dark fruit. Medium to heavy body, probably along the lines of a heavy porter, but not quite an imperial stout. Bitter finish that is both dry and slightly sticky at the same time.
3.5 old rating: Good dark beer, but the sprite. very hoppy beer with a slightly strange smell of stale beer.
4.1 Very dark redish brown with a thick tan head. Fruity and malty notes. Malt, chocolate, liqorice and fruit. Full body with a long, bittrsweet finish.
3.9 Pours dark, dark brown and thick and chewy and hazy and very, very inviting. The head is frothy but restrained, with some lacing as it fades. Smells like tea and chocolate and caramel, begging you to take a sip. Tastes immediately sweet in a rush of toffee and sweet tea, yet then grows mildly fruity and bitter. The citric hops show up on the moderately bitter, clingy finish, providing a nice balance to the unending malt sweetness. Gets a little much as it warms, but still a nice bottle. (5/1/09)
3.9 Clear brown with a light brown head. Aroma is sweet, caramel and rather hoppy - grapefruit. Flavor is quite sweet and moderate bitter. Dry and moderate bitter finish. Very nice. 170609
3.8 Bottle @ Happy Gnome. Dark brown appearance with a tan/brown head. Sweet Belgian chocolate, light piney hoppy nose. Sweet molasses,?caramelized, dark chocolate, mildly vinous flavor with a bitter, earthy hoppy finish. Complex sweet Dark Belgian ale finish with a slight bitter, hoppy, vinous touch.
3.3 Very sweet Malty strong ale, hops do a fairly decent job of attempting to balance this out, very yeasty, bottled 2007, opened 2011.
4.0 Reviewed from notes. Pours a moderate brown color with a little bit of a red hue to it. Off white head with a few streaks of lace. Nose brings forward a cacophony of different scents, including raisins, dark fruit, booze, roasted malt, and a bit of dark rum. Taste pulls everything together quite well, accentuating the dark fruits and some sweetness. Mouthfeel is a bit thin. Drinks really well and glad to try it when I did a few months back. 4.0 I would have to answer the style question by saying that in the last few years this type of ale has come to most beer drinkers attention by stones sublimely self rightuous. This is a black ipa, plain and simple, great roasted malt aroma and flavor on the front of the tongue, and spicy and flowery hops at the back of the throat. Its a wonderful interpretation of a black ipa and an overall style that is going to become very popular in the coming years.
4.2 Aroma:humle citron malt vanilje tømmer hasselnød Ud.:kastaniebrun Skum:cafe au lait tæt langhold rolig E.smag:sød moderat bitter lidt Krop:medium For.:cremet Brus:blød f (75cl) døe ho 31/8-10
3.6 nice fruit cocktail in hop brew. sweetish with a bit of rusty oil can in there the beer is zesty and bright though still aged well and refined. hops come through well enough with a pine cone and flower character that i am fond of. quirky? yes! and good.
3.9 Draught at Avery. Dark brown almost black with medium tan head. Aroma is spicy sweet with hints of molasses and deep caramel malt, nice pungent hop profile. Taste has strong hop presence with rich malty dried fruit at backend. Medium sweetness at start. Hints of chocolate. Medium bodied but hearty. Awesome brew.
3.5 22 oz. bottle from fidelis83- thanks again, Jeremiah! Pours a cloudy dark brown with a finger-thick off-white head with nice retention. Notes of grass, earthy hops, caramel malts, molasses, citrus and other fruits, raisins, nuts, and alcohol. Medium-bodied, with active carbonation and a malty, spicy mouthfeel. The hops are pretty decent for a beer that’s been sitting for a few years. Complex and pretty nice.
4.0 Pours a very deep dark brown with garnet highlights and a small very creamy dense off-white head. Aroma as wonderful slightly nutty strong sweet caramel nose with additional notes of molasses, light citrus hops, light apple, grape and fig fruitiness. Flavor has a very strong caramel and molasses start followed by a smooth semi-strong toasted presence. Fruity notes of apple, grape and a strong figgy are in the middle with a light citrus hops note at the end with a tea like bitter ending. Body is extremely dense, almost a watered down molasses feeling. Texture is very smooth with fine carbonation that leaves terrific lacing on the glass. Overall a very well balanced and complex brew. This brew has really weathered the aging well and seems like it will only get better with age.
3.8 22 oz bomber-Old rating I didn’t realize I hadn’t entered. Dark pour w/a moderate off white head. Sweet aroma. Flavors of roasted malt, bread dough, molassis, cocca, raisens & dates, as well as dark fruit & banana. Very Sasion like, smooth & easy to drink. Alcohol was well hidden. A real winner.
4.0 Bottled. Quite much black colour with a mediumsized beigeish brown head that leaves some lace. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, mild spices, some quite strong notes of hops, but yet quite hidden in it all. Flavour is chocolate, coffee, some caramel malts, mild alcohol as well as some mild spices. Quite bitter in the finish. Strong flavourbomb, but still rather balanced and nice.
3.2 Finally pulled this out of the cellar. Probably a bit past its peak since there was not much hops discernible anymore. I had it once before as part of a beer dinner when it was fresh and I remembered it to be much better. Right now it is a lot like a HogHeaven, very sweet molasses and caramel dominate, some complex aftertaste with perhaps a bit of bitterness thrown in.
4.2 "Fourteen--Avery Anniversary Ale--""A Very Dark, Different, Dry-Hopped Ale"""--2007--22 oz. Bottle. 9.46% ABV--60 IBU’s.(4.5 / 5.0) Amber Ale--Imperial? 6 @ $7.99 Each. Mild lace thin espresso head. Clear thin dark black color. Roasted mild floral hop fruit front. Mild sweet creamy bisquit fruit roasted caramel mild cocoa body. Smooth hop no EtOH end. Complex. Sampled 10/28/2007.
3.9 POurs dark brown. Nose is molasses, cocoa, floral, figs, prunes and raisin. Flavor is sweet dark fruits, booze, molasses, toffee, floral hops, butterscotch, raisin and dates.
4.4 Pours very dark brown, with a few shades of amber in the thinner parts of the glass. Head is a rich, frothy pillowed layer that lasts a long time. Lace coats the entire rim, almost like one of those Nitro pints of Guinness would. Nose is somewhat clean, grassy, fruity (banana?), and dessert spices. Palate is a big malt with Dunkel-Weizen like fruit in the there, with some of the banana clove that you would normally expect from a dunkel-weizen or possibly weizenbock. Rich malt flavors mix well the alcohol warmth and tangy hops on the finish. Walnuts, raisins, and a suggestion of dark rum can be found as well. This is a very, very interesting beer to consider as it is tasted. Very complex and hard to pinpoint the exact flavors.
4.0 This was a very strange beer. It was dark black with a tan whip-cream-like head. The smell made me think chocolate. The taste followed suit but had some real hoppiness going on. Sorta grassy, piney, and almost like chocolate mints. This beer was tasty but very complex. It felt like my taste buds were being assaulted! Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 05-22-2007 15:51:34
4.6 Poured from a bomber to a snifter. A: Pours a very dark brown that appears black. Very large light-brown head with good retention and some web-like lacing. S: Very sweet malts with lots of dark fruits (raisins, cherry and berries) with a bit of chocolate and some hops. Smells very good. Kinda has the smell of a barleywine more than a BSDA. I never would have guessed the style upon smell. T: Just like the scent, lots of dark fruit, chocolate, molasses, maltiness and hops. Hits sweet and leaves a raisin taste on the finish with a note of chocolate and malt. Not as hoppy as it smells. I’m really loving the taste, but it’s not very consistent with the style. M&D: Mouthfeel is perfect, medium-heavy bodied with a great amount of carbonation, but not so much that it’s distracting. It’s pretty drinkable, the alcohol doesn’t come out much. A bomber is perfect for one person. Overall: Although it’s not consistent with the style I really love this beer. It’s very unique and hard to find these days. It’s drinking great now, so get it if you can!
3.7 Draft at Blind Tiger. More of a black IPA than a strong ale imo. Great hoppy characteristics, both in aroma and flavor. Very enjoyable.
4.5 2007 22oz. bomber. Served cool room temp into a Duvel glass. Pours medium dark brown with a large light brown head that retains a cap down the glass, and leaves some nice clumps of lacing. Big aroma starts with semi-sweet chocolate chips, heavy molasses, raisins, licorice, caramel, vanilla, a touch of hops and some spice. Flavor is excellent, chocolate, molasses, brown sugar, dark fruits, cherries, some hoppy bitterness, a touch of caramel and toffee, and some spice. Quite complex. Mouthfeel is full with moderate carbonation. Alcohol taste is present, even with two years on the bottle, but it doesn’t surprise me coming from Avery...they never try to hide the alcohol content of their brews, although the alcohol is certainly mellowing over time compared to when I had this fresh. I really love Fourteen, out of the numerous Avery offerings I’ve tried, this is my favorite. Buy it if you can find it!
3.7 16th May 2008. Smooth chocolatey start with a faint molasses tone. This leads quickly to fruity hops that are not bitter. A little like a barleywine but this is something different.
4.3 Dark brown/black with a dense and large yellow beige head. Huge chocolate and roasted malt aroma. Great malt and hop balance for such a big beer. Great chocolate flavor - love it.
3.8 Bomber. Poured deep reddish-brown with a dense cap of tan head.. set up nicely and left pretty lacing as it descended. The aroma picked up toasty redder fruits, toffee, and molasses with accents of brown sugar and vanilla.. oxidation is starting to set in, and the hops have faded, but some earth and citrus remained.. soft overall and very enticing. The flavor found even more molasses along with raisins and other assorted dark fruit at the core.. some toasty vanilla and brown sugar were laced throughout.. light earth and citrusy bitterness paired with prickly, warming alcohol on the edges.. finished long and mostly malty. Medium-bodied and warm on the palate with moderate carbonation.. spicy and warm, but well-balanced. This is breaking down, but it’s still tasty and interesting.
3.8 DØE Valby 09. Pours dark redbrown with a light beige head. Aroma is vineous, dark caramel, light hop. Flavour is vineous, heavy hop, citrus and grapefruit, and some dried fruit.
