Avery Anniversary Seventeen

Avery Anniversary Seventeen

After years of commemorating our anniversary with deliciously wild and weird ales, we decided to mix it up a bit and create our first Anniversary Lager. SEVENTEEN is a celebration and case study of the aromas and flavors of German hops. And knowing our fetish for those beautiful green cones, you can be confident that the contents of this bottle are excessively hopped for your olfactory pleasure. Many thanks to all and we hope you enjoy our lupulin dissertation. Peace to all and follow your dreams! Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, imported German hops, and German yeast.

3.2 A friend of mine split this with me and to be honest, I was disappointed. It was just unremarkable and I have usually found Avery anniversary beers interesting. Dark black color obviously with a malty smell. The taste was like a dark lager but was just kind of boring. The beer was not hard to drink but for an $8 anniversary beer I would expect a little more. 3.4 Intense bitter and sweet aroma. Black color and thick foam. Thin and oily on the palate. Strong aftertaste of hops.
3.9 Pitch black pout with beige head. Roasty chocolate aroma along with some grassy hops. Slight bitter chocolate taste at the start then turns roasty. Nice dry finish where the hop taste lingers on your tongue. Really nice black lager. More mouthfeel than expected.
4.2 22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled May 2010. Pours crystal clear very dark brown color with a nice 2 finger dense dark khaki head with great retention that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Some nice spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas of big caramel, roasted malt, toasted biscuit, molasses, chocolate, light coffee, earthy hops, and a touch of dark fruits. Very nice aromas with good strength and complexity. Taste of chocolate, caramel, roasted malt, toasted biscuit, molasses, nuttiness, coffee, dark fruit, earthy hops, and herbal spiciness. Fair amount of spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, and herbal hops on the finish for a good bit. Very nice and lush malt balance with the hop bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very creamy and slightly slick mouthfeel. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed at all on the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent black lager from Avery. Great flavor balance and complexity; and very smooth to drink for the alcohol level.
3.8 (Bottle) Very dark brown colour, almost black, with hints of ruby when seen through light. Rocky beige head, leaving traces of lacing. Malty, roasted nose with chocolate, dark rye bread, coffee, caramel, dried fruit and a touch of blueberries. Malty, roasted taste with notes of black coffee, cocoa, dark rye bread, raisins, soy sauce and a generous piney bitterness in the finish. Almost full body, viscous mouthfeel. A certain malt sweetness shining through. Quite tasty and very nice.
3.5 Bottle. The pour was a thick dark brown with a large (2-3 finger) cream colored rocky head that lasted throughout, producing some excellent sticky lacing. The aroma was of burnt chocolate malts, grassy hops and a leathery yeast with notes of chocolate, licorice and a smidgen of dark fruit (plums and raisins). The taste was sweetly bitter and rather malty with a note of chocolate early on and then progressed into this smooth bitter taste with hint of licorice, a small dose of dark fruit and a nice amount of hops at the end. The flavor lasted an average duration with a bitter malty smoothness settling nicely on the taste buds. Mouthfeel was medium in body and creamy yet dry in texture with a medium carbonation. Overall a creamy and malty brew with a nice mild hint of hops which does a great job of setting off the malty sweetness...
3.7 Poured into a lager glass from a 650ml bottled bottled in May of 2010. A: Almost opaque garnet with a moderately sized dense and creamy messy tan head that clings to the glass as it shrinks. S: Sweet chocolate and roasted malts, this is well past the hop point unfortunately. Still it smells good. T: Right away I’m hit with a sweet chocolate that blends well with the roasted malts ending very sweet with a caramel finish. This is like the bastard child of an imperial stout and a barleywine at this point. M: Syrupy body with almost no carbonation. O: Shame this isn’t fresh but with it being a one-time brew I had to try it. It’s still worth trying, just don’t expect any hop presence at all.
3.1 A - pours dark brown with high tan head that dissipates. No lacing. S - aromas of sweet malts, grassy/floral hops. Hints of prunes and clamato? M - medium body, high carb. Lingering bitter hops. T - malts up front, bitter citrus/grassy hops, on the palate, with hint of dark chocolate and licorice , prunes. Lingering bitter hops on the end. O - underwhelming.
3.7 22 ounce bottle. Just found in back of beer cellar. Pours almost black with a lovely tan head. Aroma of hops, dark chocolate, and malt. Taste is roast, chocolate, dark fruit, yeast, and some spices. Rice and creamy. Unique, different, and very good.
3.7 (Bottle) Pours black with creamy, nougat to pale brown coloured head. The aroma is a mix of roasted malt/chocolate, alcohol and spicy/grassy/light floral hops. Some plums in the background. Nice grainy maltiness on the nose. The flavour is light sweet, medium bitter and tiny acidic. Tones of dark chocolate and resinous/spicy hops as well as a light touch of dark fruits. The mouthfeel is round, creamy and clean. Smooth malt finish. Nice bitter sting at the end. Medium bodied.
3.8 The way Avery meshed in the hops is amazing on this beer; very well balanced and clean to the taste.
3.1 Name: Seventeen Date: June 22, 2010 Mode: Bottle Source: Hop City, Atlanta Appearance: black, big creamy beige head Aroma: sweet roasted aroma, touch of fruity sweetness Flavor: sweet citrus flavor, balancing roast, light bitterness, touch of chocolate Overall: good blend between the roasted malta and sweet fruity hops Aroma: 6/10; Appearance: 7/10; Flavor: 6/10; Palate: 6/10; Overall: 12/20 Rating: 3.1/5.0 Drinkability: 7/10 Score: ** /4
3.4 Den här ölen uppfattade jag som något söt med en påträngande maltighet som samtidigt är ganska så mild. Jag ansåg mig även hitta någon ton av lakrits men det kan tas med en nypa salt då undertecknad var berusad vid inmundigandet.
4.6 This beer pours a perfectly dark color with a fantastic pillowy head that sustains itself throughout the drinking time. Aroma is great, notes of chocolate, roasted malts, and hops all mixed together. Taste is awesome with a great lager mouthfeel. Notes are of roasted chocolate, some sweet maltiness, a slight bitterness from hops although there also seems to be some due to the chocolate as well, and they all mix together in a perfectly drinkable blend of awesomeness. This beer is very similar to Stone’s Black IPA, but much more drinkable and slightly less aggressive.
3.5 Bottle. Pours dark brown with a medium beige head. Sweet aroma with notes of roasted malts, caramel, coffee and a hint of hops. Flavor is sweet with notes of caramel and roasted malts. A hint of grapefruit citrus towards the finish.
3.7 Bottle:   Black in color, deep cola hues on the edges, large frothy off-white head, nice lacing.   Floral and hops on the nose, slight burnt/charred malts.   Smooth maltiness on the tongue, slight peat and charred wood, a little floral with some hop and bright grassiness on the backside.   Moderate to full body and mouthfeel.   This is an interesting brew, somewhat of a Pale, a little bit of a Schwarzbier, and some aspects of an Imperial Pilsner.   Surprised to see this is nearly 9%.   Seems like a Black Pale Ale.   Smooth, flavorful, and very clean.   Well balanced.   Good stuff!
4.2 Une belle surprise et une des meilleures anniversaires d’Avery. Gros bouquet de houblons combiné au chocolat et à l’espresso. Onctueux comme une robuste porter, parfumé comme une ipa, une belle surprise!
3.5 Bottle from South Bay Drugs: Created a thick patch of soapy head while the liquid appeared as a dark black coffee. My nose detects a minor touch of roasted down malt and only the faintest scent of grassy hops, but that was about it. The flavor had more personality than the initial aroma lead me to believe and that was due to the same roasted profile of malts. There is also a bitter bite of hops in the finish, but overall I thought this was another average black lager.
3.8 Very dark brown with a medium, off-white head. Malty with hoppy notes. Malt, hops and caramel. Full body with a long, balanced (dry) finish.
5.0 This brew is perfect I tell ya. Good head retention and aroma. Only medium full with superb carbonation. I thought it would be more rich and concentrated. Perfect balance with a nice hop presence and roast component. Not sweet at all. This is so f’ing good. Trump or no Trump, this brew is perfect in every way. I am amazed.
3.7 Bomber purchased at Holiday Wine Cellar well over a year ago ($7.89). Pours a dark brown-black with two fingers of frothy light brown foam with good retention. Mild aroma of roasted malts with notes of smoke and dark bread with hints of cafe mocha and dark fruit. Flavor of dark roasted malts, creamy chocolate, burnt toast, and dark fruit. Lingering bitterness at the end which appears to be derived more from dark roasted malts than hops. Really, I do not find the supposed hops here that the commercial description would indicate, but still good and greater than the sum of its parts. (326, 620)
3.8 Dark colored pour with a bit of hops in the nose and roasted malts. Taste is smooth and easy to drink. Pretty good stand out beer for what it is; and frankly something finally redeeming from Avery’s Anniversary beers. One that doesnt suck is a rarity at this point.
3.7 Poured from bottle into snifter. A truly delicious beer, that I suggest anyone should try!
3.9 Bottle: Clear dark red/cobbery colour, with a nice creamy head. Aroma is dominated of sweet maltynes citrus, flowery. Flavor had a nice sweet caramelly mouthfeeling, dark chocolate, medium body, medium dry fruity finish. Nice
3.9 bottle - Dunkler Bock, RB? Really? Huh. I think schwarzbier is a much better fit, but okay. The category isn’t really that important for this unusual brew. It pours black with a lasting tan head that laces well. The aroma is of roast malt with notes of pine and citrus hops. The flavor includes well hopped bitterness and full bodied roast malt with roast and hop tastes lingering in the finish. Well done!
3.3 opaque mahogany with a dense tan head; full body with medium-high carbonation. aroma: sweet dark malt, fruity alcohol esters, leafy hops, and hints of smoke and molasses. taste: leafy hops and dark coffee-ish malt; with notes of cola, molasses, and burnt fruit cake. i would prefer more caramel and chocolate malts, to give a fuller, rounder malt character.
3.5 Very hops aromatic smell and taste which otherwise mainly is comprised of roasted malt, but there are also tints of dark chocolate. A nice beer!
4.0 Bottle from Systembolaget. Opaque black colour with off-white head. Magnificent aroma of roasted malts and hops. Taste is very bitter with roasted malts coming second, long aftertaste. Oily mouthfeel. Great stuff!
3.5 Bomber. Nose of smooth, dulcet chocolate tones, velvety. Coke pour with a creamy, lacing light brown head. Taste is dry and heavily roasty, ash and light tar and tobacco leaf, bitter with only a touch of sweetness. Hop prickling and warmth in the throat, no fruitiness or floral spikes, but that noble hop grip is there. Medium body is extra soft. Essentially a chocolate-and-cocoa porter. Clean and enjoyable, not going to have it again.
3.9 The beer pours chestnut black with a nice lacey tan head on top. The aroma is sweet and roasted malts with a bit of booze. Unfortunately with a year on the beer the hops have been lost. The body is crisp and clean from the lagering yeast with nice roasted malt flavors. It is very smooth and just a tad creamy.
