3.7 6 oz. sample poured into a snifter. Pours a hazy amber with a small off white head. Ther aroma was mainly sweet caramel malt, alcohol, and fruit. The flavor had a huge malt presence. Sweet caramel, vanilla, fruit, and a hint of the alcohol. This one has become more barleywine like. Sweet, smooth, and syrupy. No hoppy bitterness at all. It would make for a decent sipper as the weather cools.
3.6 Bottle from Shigadeyo that I shared at RBSG. Ross is a self appointed rating god, I am going to rate this because he does not believe in rating vintage beers. Pours reddish amber with an off white head. Nice sweet and boozy aroma. Medium bodied with average carbonation and very slight syrupy texture. Flavor of caramel and butterscotch, with a tinge of cinnamon. Hops have pretty much faded, leaving this beer very sweet and malty beer. Sort of like a lighter barleywine.
3.7 Bottle: Pours orangish red with a small head. Aroma of cinnamin and hops. Alcohol is easy to detect. Not bad.
3.5 22oz bottle from deftim13. Shared with deftim13, WeeHeavy, bikesandbeers, Sean, and Brad. I think this bottle may be 4 years old. Very mellow. Hops have faded. Lots of melanoidins. Past it’s peak, but still very nice. No oxidation. 3.4, but I add 0.1, because of it’s age.
3.3 Bomber from Deftim13 shared with wetherel and bikesandbeer at PP Carlsbad bottle shop. Orange with a tan head. Nose is sweet but dead. Taste is sweet and dead and clearly over the hill.
2.9 3-2-08 bottle (4 years aged) shared at tasting thanks to Humulone Red!! Cloudy orange yellow with thin head and some lacing. Smell is sweet and metallic. Warm hoppy flavor with some alcohol in the taste too. Mouthfeel is smooth and pretty decent. A bit "hot" for me but I am glad I got to try it. Thanks Charles!
3.1 bottle generously shared by HumuloneRed Pours a cloudy orange color with a light offwhite head. Smell is creamy and faintly hopped butterscotch sweetness. Taste is similar with still a surprisingly hopped flavor after all this time to complement the butterscotch like creamy malt character. Seems to have held up pretty well.
3.6 Bottle. Soft hops, lots of sweetness. Cloudy orange with thin head. Smooth palate with light citrus flavor, dry bitter finish.
3.1 4 Years Old: I think my glass may have been contaminated or something, but whatever. Metallic and spice aroma some sweet fruit. Pours a cloudy orange, heavily carbonated, bubbly thin creamy head. Metallic flavor, some cherries, and hop presence. Palate is interesting, smooth, chewy, with a bitter dry finish. I need to try is fresh maybe. ::shrug::
3.9 Tasted 2/18/08. 22oz bomber. Dark ruby hue and clear. Off-white head. Aromas of raisins, port and spices. Musty bready and cinnamon. Grassy piney hops and a noticeable alcohol burn. Tasted at cellar temperature. Full bodied with a good mildly lengthy burn. Fudgy viscous palate. Definite alcohol presence. Graham crackers and a touch cocoa. Mild acidity with a rolling sticky palate. Dark fruit and a dry finish. Mildly woody. Touch anise and pepper. The seconf glass was heavily sedimented and more of a yeasty citrus perfumy nose. Citrus toffee juxtaposition. Good yeast character. Good and good drinking. Aged well. Apples and tart citrus fruit and sweet malts. Not quite full dimensional.
3.3 Clear rusty orange color with a fleeting head. Mostly a malty sweet smell with a trace of oxidation. Decent taste of malts and herbal hops is mildly sweet. Has a watery texture. Not bad, wish I could have tried this fresh.102205
3.3 somewhat gimicky. Complex malt and hop aroma. rich, almost syrupy, mouthfeel. nice balance of malt/bitterness. worth trying. an interesting brew.
3.7 Had this beer on 3/10/2004. Aroma has a nice hop scent to it. Color is a deep golden, carbonation is OK with a thin head. Taste is smooth and rich. Starting with a full body it goes down with a smooth feel that has a sharp edge. The finish comes thought this sharpens with a rich sweet malt taste backed by a fine blend of hop flavor and bitterness. Overall I must say that its a good beer but its just a bit much for my taste.
3.8 Pour: hazy amber/orange. Head: thin, offwhite, creamy. Aroma: musty, sweet, cake, some citrus, alcohol. Flavor: musty, aged, bready, hoppy. Palate: lively. Finish: warm.
3.8 Pours a peachy amber with a nice consistency. Looks barley wineish. I managed to coax a medium creamy yellowish orange head. The aroma was sweet, caramel, very similar to an English BW, citrusy, sugar, alcohol. Bready malt aroma. The flavor is upfront mellow soft alcohol, sweet, dry, citrus, caramel, ahhh and then the hops show up, a slight bitterness, bready malt, slightly earthy. The age seems like its mellowed everything out and toned the alcohol down a little. The palate was smooth and full, very lively when swished. Finishes dry and warm.
4.2 Off notes. Well this will be interesting. (realistically, I have low expectations) Purchased today (12/23/2006) at Kelly Liquors, Albuquerque, NM. Maybe I didn’t notice it before, but there were several other bottles there, still. They have been on the shelf all this time (I am assuming). Here we go. Pours a golden amber with a creme head. Nose is chalky, with light hops...and I just have to go back to the chalk description and say it is like talc almost. Flavor is still good! Woo hoo! This seems almost like an aged barleywine to me, and not so much a DIPA. Sweet on the end. Very, very light hop presence. Feel is sticky and thick. Slight alcohol presence. Still very, very drinkable. Though even without having this fresh, you can tell it has fallen off a bit from how it was fresh. For some reason as I go through the bottle, I just wonder exactly how much time this baby has left on the world before it goes totally bad. Glad to try it and maybe I will go buy the rest within the next week and a half before I leave town for good.
3.4 Date: 11/28/2005 Mode: Bottle Source: Tasting opaque dark amber, headless, big sweet malt aroma with earthy hops, rich malt flavor, lots of balancing bitterness, Aroma: 8/10; Appearance: 5/10; Flavor: 7/10; Palate: 7/10; Overall: 12/20 Rating: 3.4/5.0 Drinkability: 7/10 Score: **+/4
3.2 (bottle - 22 oz) Copper color with not much foam or carbonation. Aroma is strong and full of citrus, sweet malts, and some alcohol. Flavor is very smooth with a decent amount of citrus still left in it, a light amount of floral hops and a slightly earthy and bitter finish. A bit thin. Maybe its past its prime, but still good.
3.5 Poured amber with off white head. Aroma of strong alcohol and citrus. This might be past its prime. Flavors of alcohol, citrus, and sweet malt. Mostly alcohol. Not that bad of an alcohol burn which was good.
3.6 Bomber thanks to Styles! Poured deep amber with a short cap of beige head... receded to a thin film and thicker ring after a minute or so. The aroma had a huge, partially-oxidized old ale character to it... deep, lightly-smoked caramel, clove honey, and prickly darker fruits pair with floral and citrus hoppage.. I like the way this evolved. The flavor had a drawn caramel and toffee base with spiked plums intermittently.. floral and sweeter orange bitterness.. unchecked alcohol peeks through at times, perhaps due to age. Medium+ body with some breaks in the flow due to alcohol spikes.. long, very warm finish toasted caramel and unidentifiable bitterness. Great stuff!
3.7 Honey, citrus (tangerine), and flowery aroma. Big bodied, high carbonation. Nice, thick malt base and a pleasant hop bitterness. Taste is citrus, some pine, and wildflower honey.
3.7 Found this sitting on the shelf of one of my local beer stores. It pours a dark hazy reddish-amber, with a very minimal head that quickly fades leaving a lacing behind. It’s aroma seems to have lost any hoppiness, just having a sugar, spice and alcohol scent left behind. Very heavy thick mouthfeel, a bit of bitterness, and a bit of an alcohol burn in the back of the throat. I wish I had rated this back when it was fresh so I could see how well it had aged.
3.6 Bottle shared at DLD. Aroma of hops and some bitterness which is suprising after 4 years. Very mellowed and I thought this was still pretty tastey.
3.8 22 oz bomber. Pours a cloudy golden orange color with a medium white head. Still quite carbonated after 4 years. Aroma of faint hops, caramel and sweet malts. Taste is caramel malty with hints of faint citrus hops. This is slightly past its prime, yet still enjoyable.
3.7 Pours a cloudy orange with decent amount of head. It was a good beer but I drank it well past its prime.
3.6 Pours a hazy copper color with a white head. Aroma is malty with lots of bittering hops. Flavor is malty, slight brown sugar, with a light bitter finish.
3.0 sampled at DLD. pours hazy orange with white head. this is clearly past it’s prime, an odd sweet orange aroma. flavor was very fruity, and hops are gone. this must be a totally different beer when it was fresher.
3.8 22 oz bomber pours a hazy orange with a white head. Sour orange, lemon citrus, and grass nose and flavor. Nice balance between the syrup sweetness, citrus, and hop spice. Finishes dry. Tasty beer.
3.6 bottle - Pours hazy light amber with a thin head. The malty aroma smells sugary sweet and has some citrus. The flavor is quite sweet with mild hops balance, citrus notes, and spices. There’s also some pretty noticeable alcohol even after several years. The palate is syrupy and overall I thought it was a bit too sweet. It’s holding up well over the years though.
4.0 Wonderful nose of nectarines & peaches gives way to alcohol, dried fruit & pineapple with some grain as the brew warms. Pours a perfect sparkling copper. The thin, frothy off-white head diminishes quickly & quite frankly is this brew’s only weakness. The flavor is very complex, like sticking your tongue out the window on the freeway. The front is malty with no acidity. The middle is warm, and the finish is strong with notes of dried fruit. The full body is soft & dry. I thought this was a barleywine. Shame on me.
