Avery Anniversary Thirteen

Avery Anniversary Thirteen

Unlucky 13? If anything, 13 has been a lucky number and year for us! Here is our version of a Weizen Doppelbock, a very rarely brewed style marrying the complexities of two great German traditions, Weiss and Doppelbock. The aroma is dominated by fruity and spicy esters produced by the German Weiss yeast strain with a dry drinkability from the wheat malt. The flavor and color are dominated by the unique specialty grains that produce the Doppelbocks flavors of fresh baked bread, toffee and cocoa, and a dark-ruby red hue. Since goats have traditionally adorned Bock labels, we chose a Rocky Mountain Goat for this Rocky Mountain Bock. Peace to all and follow your dreams!

Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, malted wheat, imported German specialty grains and hops, and one unique German yeast.

3.7 Bottle, probably around 4 years old at this point. Pours deep deep reddish brown with a thin head. Sweet dark fruits and banana in the aroma, with a hint of spices and a light sherry-like oxidation. The flavor also shows a little bit of oxidation, but overall, this has held up well for a 4 year-old beer, and I don’t mind a little oxidation in older beers like this. Some dark fruity sweetness, toasted bread, light chocolate notes, and a hint of booze. Nice, I bet this was really good at about 1 year.
4.1 22oz bomber with a Rocky Mountain Goat on it. Color was dark brown with a tan head when poured into my weizen glass. The smell was a little banana and cloves. The taste was also slightly banana with some bread and caramel coming into play. Nice beer but I am unfamiliar with the style. Alcohol was very well hidden. 3.7 Had on tap at Jackie O’s Anniversary Party. Was actually given this beer for free. That always makes it better, no? I love them sweet and malty so this one was a keeper. Sweety flavors of vanilla, brown sugar and toast. Slight hop finish. Loved it.
3.6 Clear deep red brown pour. covered initially by a small and frothy tanned head. Aroma is alcoholic with plum, prune and vanilla. Sweet. Medium to full bodied Alcoholic finish. (Bottle, courtesy of tarjei 12.12.2009)
3.7 Poured a very dark brown almost black with an oily appearance. Nose is sweet with a hint of the abv with some malts. Flavor follows the nose. Big and full with a nice bite to it. Sweet but not cloying with some licorice notes. A dessert weisen? Pretty tasty
3.8 Dark brown, low head. Plays well on malt, hop, some alcohol in the end. Simple, nice. Medium body, flat, alcohol. Purchased in ølkonsortiet.
3.8 Bottle. Pours a dark reddish brown with a beige/light brown head. Sweet, malty, dark fruit aroma. A bit cloying. Flavour is a delicate blend of sweet dark fruits, subdued hops and a remote roasted note. Liquorice finish with slight wine-like notes and a bit of alcohol thrown in. Lingering grassy/apple note. A nice beer, even if I found these types a bit on the heavy side. 18-10-09.
4.1 @Freaktoberfest 2006 bottle, pours deep stunning ruby with a cream color medium head, aroma of cereals, grain, honey, butter and some apple notes, flavor of wood, honey, grain with loads of scotch like alcohol and bitter finish.Full bodied. Wow
2.5 Bottle. Poured near black with a slight red tinge and a thin light brown head. Aroma has a strong alcohol sent with some smokey malt characters. Flavor also has a bit of a harsh alcohol flavor that overwhelms the malty flavor. It may be past its peak at this point.
2.5 Almost stout like in appearance, nearly opaque dark brown to black with tan head. Nose is typical weizenbock - dark malts, bananna fruit, bread. On the palate is a big caramal to roasted malt sweetness followed by hefty alcohol warmth. Finish is long and alcoholic. Definitely a high % alcohol bock beer.
3.6 Medium brownish head. Hazy dark red brown body. Papery syrupy malty aroma with caramel and alcohol notes. Dryish-sweet raisiny licorice and soy taste with alcohol and paper notes, with some vanilla and roasty chocolate. Rounded smooth mouthfeel with alcohol heat. Fullish body. Dry chocolate and vanilla aftertaste with wooden notes. Was told this was perhaps a bit past its prime at 3-4 years of age. (0.655l bottle, Oslo beer junta tasting.)
4.0 Flaske: Overraskende frisk. Flot dybrød/brun næsten uigennemsigtig øl med et lille skumhoved. God duft af bær og en smule hvede. Smagen er domineret af balanceret alkohol på den gode måde. Bitter finish. Oloroso karakter med en tør eftersmag. Virkelig godt lagret. Super øl.
2.9 Bottle@Oslo Øljunta Olympen gathering. A low beige head upon a barely translucent, dark brown colored body. Vinous aroma, soft malty with faint caramel and a whiff of dark bread and dried fruits. Mellow and rather bland malt body, soft and vinous fruitiness. Low carbonation level. Feels flat in the mouth. Mild malty finish. Could have been a really nice one, but this beer is obviously oxidized. Hope I’ll get another chance to taste it. Meanwhile, re-rate is pending.
3.8 Strong vinous aroma. Lots of sweetness. No wheat character, lots of sweet malt, some sourness in the finish. Oaky dryness, some vanilla and other spices.
4.1 On tap @ Avery - three year old keg. Really great nose of damp earth, rasins. Upfront flavor is really weizen-esque, and really complex - sweet, rich with various fruits (strawberry, some plum), and some spicy toffee. Our whole table (most new to craft beer) wanted full pints, but they’re only offering tasters, so stuck with multiples of those. never had it fresh, but with 3 years on it, it’s superb.
4.1 Bottle purchased at Knightly Spirits in Orlando. One of the last bottles left on the shelf and the clerk (he’s on here, I forget his name sadly). I wish I could have had this sample when it came out, because now it smells a little rough and old. One the plus side, the aroma has developed into this very earthy, raisin, soy sauce, with a good funky yeast, and at this age, its real funky. The flavor, well, now I know how it’s been drinking well. Man, I love this earthy bocky flavor. It reminds me of Sam Adams Triple Bock in the nose (not over-the-top however,) but the flavor is rich and full. The texture is slightly gritty, earthy and ends velvety. Man, I love the flavor of this, it is richwith a mild bit of fruity grain. Man, top notch stuff.
3.9 Bomber. Pours a dark brown with some reddish highlights and a thin tan head. Aromas are a splendid mix of dark fruit and brown sugar. Flavor is more of the same... heavily sweet with a nice prune finish to it. This is really much better than I expected... don’t know if the flavor has blossomed with age or what, but this is plenty good stuff. Alcohol is not hiding from anyone. Wish I had another bottle.
3.2 This thing held up well. pours out a darker brown color with a beige head. aroma was sweet and malty. Flavor had wheat and alcohol all though it, though it wasnt terrible by any stretch of the means.
2.2 Bottle shared by BgThang. Thanks Ken! Pours dark brown with a light beige head. Smell is sweet caramel and wheat. Taste is sweet, oxidized, perhaps and wheaty. Too sweet all around though, and I wasn’t a fan of this one.
3.2 Amber pour. Sweet aroma and taste. A lot of heavy malt presence. Ton of Alcohol.
3.0 Dark amber with a reddish tint. Looked awesome. Aroma of spice and fruit. Booze overload again.
3.7 750ml bottle poured into a tulip. AT pours dark brown with reddish tones. The head is medium with large rubble. The aroma is sweet, like molasses with a yeasty undercurrent. The body is very thick and oily and has a contrasting hop bite. The overall quality of the beer is fine. It’s really not very wheat-like though. It’s pretty sweet and reminds more more of a barley wine or double than it does a weizen bock.
3.0 Bottle. Retired ayy? LET DOWN. Pours a dark brown body. Aroma is strong alcohol. Taste is same.
3.2 750ml bottle purchased at new beer. Pours dark brown with ruby hint. Dry, toffee, cocoa, but not bready/clovey enough for a weizen bock IMO. Overall, nothing really interests me which was disappointing. Tastes overly boozy. Aventinus takes its brass one and absolutely shames this sucker.
3.9 Bomber thanks to dchmela. Pours a dark ruby hue with a medium brown head. The aroma is fruity, lots of fruity German malts. Reminds me a bit of Celebrator Dopple, and that’s a good thing. The flavor is fairly fry, dusty, lots of sweet fruits, prunes, berries, strawberry, a huge malty aspect washes over it all. Bready and yeasty. Very little alcohol warmth. A very nice powerful lager. Very enjoyable.
3.6 Found some old notes. (7/14/07). Bottle. Poured a deep brown with a brown head. Nose is very malty with some caramel. Flavors of malt, dried fruit, and caramel. Pretty good.
3.7 Bottle. Pours a mahogany brown body with an off white head. Sweet malty with a nice roasty coffee backbone. Toffee, caramel and coco. Lighter spices and dark fruity esters, wheat and light grain.
3.7 Dark brown with nice head and good ruby highlights. Smell is nice. Taste has wheat characteristics some toffee flavors. The maltiness sweetness from the bock also really shine through.
3.8 Bottle, shared by jarspag with Maheu and myself during the January ski trip to Mammoth. This one has a ruby maroon color with a medium tan head. Interesting aroma that is dry, fruity and roasty with a bit of a metallic astringency. Flavor is mostly plum, raisin, and toffee, finishing with caramel malt sweetness and a light roast. Pretty good with a few years on it, wish I could have tried it fresh.
3.7 22 oz bottle....Pours a thinnish dark head, over a dark brown body.....nose of bready malt layers, with additional fruits.....tastes of many fruits and malts with hop presence. Mouthfeel excellent. These comment are from notes of a tasting done in August 2006.
