Avery Anniversary Twenty Three

Avery Anniversary Twenty Three

100% Brettanomyces Fermented Dark Farmhouse 7.9% ABV. Inspired by Brabant (remember that one?) and the goodness of its marriage of Brettanomyces fermentation and Belgian dark malts, we’ve crafted this celebratory wild ale using three strains of Bretts. Our house strain, Brettanomyces drie, brings loads of ripe stone fruit aromas to the mix. Brettanomyces bruxellensis lends the classic horsey and rustic aspects of a traditional wild ale, while Brettanomyces custersianus delivers massive tropical fruit essences to the flavor party. Add some beautiful, dark and robust Belgian specialty malts for caramel, chocolate and fig elements and you have this — our rendition of a Dark Farmhouse Ale.

3.8 Bottle from the dregs run. Pours clear dark brown with a thin beige head. Aromas of plum and toffee, brett is quite restrained. Overripe stone fruit. Taste is more dark fruits, roast fig, light funk. Nicely rounded finish.
3.7 Bottle shared at Chriso’s and Ruth pre GBBF shindig, August 5, 2017. Copper amber pour. Real apple juice nose, homemade apple juice. Taste is very weird, no sweetness, just brett and bitter apple peels. Not bad but well, not like any other beer I’ve had. Interesting take, in blind tasting I might mistake it for a cider.
3.6 Bottle at Chriso pre-GBBF 2017 Shindig. Dark brown with some reddish clarity, off white head. Nose is sour, tart, malt vinegar, slight roasted malts, apple vinegar, fruit chutney. Taste is sour and tart, apple chutney, soft fruits, very slightly roasted malts.
3.5 Bottle shared at chriso’s slightly tart lactic and slightly metallic aroma. Chocolate, roasty, red fruit, quite a lot of residual sweetness, chalky, minerally dry
3.3 Bottle at Chriso pre GBBF Shindig 2017. Dark brown beer lasting tan head. sweetish beer. Some heat its an ok sweet malty beer with a bit of booze on the finish.

A reddy brown brown coloured pour with a halo of beige head aroma is woody, hint of vinegar, apple, dusty, granny Smith apple, dusty. Flavour is composed of dusty sour, red berries, apple, toffee, burnt sugars, feet, sweaty sock. Palate is medium sweet, sour, woody, little vinous fruits. Drying. Mouldy.

4.0 Really good anniversary beer. It didn't knock my socks off but it has a good flavor and finish.
3.7 The beer poured dark brown to black in color, and formed a beige colored head that was about one finger thick. The smell was a mix of sweet molasses, ripe cherry, and green apple. There was a definitive note of Brett, but not as much as I was expecting from a 100% fermentation. The taste was more like a diluted quad, than a farmhouse ale, as I could detect raisin, green apple, vanilla, fig, and toffee. The funk from the Brett was quite subdued. The beer was very light on the palette, hid the alcohol very well, and was easy to drink. Decent sour ale, but not very farmhouse evoking.
4.0 Tasted fruity, with notes of dates, oak, funky yeast notes, and red wine grapes. Complex finish.
3.7 Pours translucent sepia with a thick tan head. Aroma delivers tempting tones of tart apple and cherry, plus toasted malt and just a kiss of caramel. Flavor features tart pomme and dark fruit, toasted malt, caramel, and a touch of sweet fruit. Tartness will get your face’s attention but is not overpowering. Mouthfeel presents decent body and OK fizz. Happy 23rd Anniversary, Avery, and may you celebrate many more!
3.2 Dark cherry aroma, with an underlying funk. Pours a nearly opaque brown with a quickly fading light tan head. Dark fruit notes are the initial flavor, with a bit of tartness. There are some roasted notes that come through in the dry finish. Overall, a complex beer, but I’m not sure all of the parts are working together here.
3.3 December 2016 - Bottle share at Leighton’s. Thanks Colin! As ’Avery Anniversary Twenty Three’. Very dark purple with a red hue, foamy brown head. Aroma is mostly blackcurrant pie up front, some plasticine and black forest gateaux. Very interesting. Body is smooth with soft carbonation. Taste is quite sweet and jammy, maybe a little oxidised, jam tart and blueberry muffin. Taste was a little bit of a let down. (3.3)
2.9 Crisp and light like a standard farmhouse ale. Slightly pungent smell. Dark red fruits reveal themselves later in the flavor and palate. Not a fan of the dark farmhouse ales. Would prefer the more common lighter version.
3.3 Bottle. This was less funky than I expected. Definitely had some lactic tang but not the full on barnyard explosion I was looking for.
4.1 From a bomber. Pours a dark ruby red makes a medium beige head. Aroma is of sour cherries and malt. Tastes of malted barley, plum, and cherry.
3.5 Bottle sample at a tasting at Beer & Beyond. Thanks beerandbeyond. Dark brown with beige head. Prune, funk, a little black pepper aroma. Mildly sour, a little vinous, sweetish taste. Medium body, fruity, mildly sour prune finish.
3.4 Bottle split at Bespin, picked up in Systembaloget Malmo, 08/12/16. Rich mahogany brown with a decent light beige cap. Nose is light funk, musty cherry skins, red berry tarteness, spice, light wood, leather, toffee. Taste comprises mellow soured berries, nutty, spice, wood must, rotten toffee apple, light brett licks. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, drying close with a sour fruit rub. Not a great for the style, drinkable but overly sweet for a sour and never pulls out of 2nd gear for me.
3.7 66cl bottle shared at Leighton’s. Many thanks to Cloin for this one. It pours a clean copper color with a small white head. Aroma is tart and sweet with notes of baked apples funk and caramel. Taste is also medium sweet with light tart notes, with baked apples, funk cider and melon. Medium bodied with good carbonation. Overall, nice
3.7 Bottled@AIH66 Beer Session (from Systembolaget, Umeå). Deep ruby red colour with a small off-white head. Aroma is quite big on the tartness when cold, but as it gets warmer it gets kind of raisins/figs and kind of ripe fruity sweetness to it as well. Flavour is raisins, some tart dry wooden notes, mild berries as well as some slight alcohol to it. Really mellowly balanced, and surprisingly sweet at the same time it’s dry and kind of tart/sourish.Surprisingly thin palate.
3.2 Bottled 650ml Dark ruby color, small steady brownish head. Aroma has bretta, plum, chocolate, fruit cake. Medium-bodied. Feels less than its ABV. Chocolate, fig, some earthyness, syrup, bretta gives some funkyness. Funky meets Belgian dark fruit cake. Is this good? Somewhat yes but not in large quantities.
3.4 Bottle shared in London - thanks to Cloun. Pours clear reddish brown with a creamy, khaki head. The nose holds tangy, leathery berries, raspberry, some lemon. Light sweet flavour with more lightly tangy berries, raspberry, jammy berries, mild leather, hints of lemon, sugary brown bread. Light to medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Sweet finish, very slight berry tang. Tasty, though somewhat simplistic.
3.2 Negro y Brett.muy interesante pero demasiado complejo y difícil de beber. Imposible terminar la botella entre dos. Lo mejor el aroma a pasas y fruta madura. Lo peor el agrio final largo que se apodera de todo.
2.5 Bottle shared at Danish Ratebeer Summer Gathering 2016, Day 2. Brown with a small tan head. Aroma of brett, horseblanket, overripe dark fruits, sweat, malt and caramel. Flavour is moderate sweet and light moderate sour. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. [20-08-2016]

3.6 Pour out of 22 oz bottle, dark brownish pour with white head, aroma brought notes of roast, bread, slight vinegar, touch of funk, hints of oak, slight dark fruit, caramel notes.
