This dangerously drinkable garnet beauty is a hop lover’s delight. The intense dry-hop nose and the alcohol content are perfectly balanced for a caramel malt backbone. This is a serious beer for serious beer aficionados. Oink!

4.5Bottle @ home. Slightly unclear dark orange to reddish color, full sized thick dense creamy white to off-white head that lasts for a long time and leaves fair lacing. Aroma is malts, hops, resin and pine. Taste malts, hops, lightly resin, firm pine, piney hops, lightly sticky hops. Malt base, firm pine bitter, bitter, medium body, decent to medium carbonation. Lovely beer, but I'm curious as to why this is a barley wine. I'd call this an Imperial IPA with a firm malt base. Nonetheless, whatever it is, it's a really nice beer! 9-5-9-4-18.
4.3Wow! Pours a deep murky copper colour, with a creamy off white head, it has an earthy floral aroma, along with dark fruits, roasted malts and caramel, flavours match starts with sweet caramel, also herbs and spice, rounding out with a smooth bitterness, slick mouthfeel, medium body, soft carbonation, extreamly warming, again, Wow!
4.4Classic bears, effortlessly quenching. I could buy three or four sets of these and be set. I don’t quite know what it is about an Imperial Red--this might’ve been the first one I’ve had--but it was exceptional. You get this dark amber hue and you don’t know quite what to expect--and then you drink it, and you’re utterly shocked! What is this? Perhaps I really like red beers, but this has to be the best one I’ve tasted. The cover is also great. Perfect ABV, I hope they keep this beer around.
3.012 oz. can. Pours an amber color with a slightly off-white cap of foam. Aroma is mostly malt with a little bit of hops and some alcohol. Medium body. Flavor is mostly sweet with some hops in the background. Finish is a little dry with more hops present. Average.
3.9Beautiful, flavorful, & smooth! Pours orange w/ a fluffy white head & excellent lacing. The aroma is a lovely balance between malt & hop. This is true for the taste as well. The dry earthy hops are presence throughout but the malt compliments them perfectly making this beer quite drinkable. It has a caramel bite with only a medium body making it go down easy. Terrific!
3.912floz can, COD: 03.28.2017, paid about $12 for a four-pack, poured and consumed from a pint glass. A good looking beer; amber in color, body has clarity, and there is nice tan head leaving specks behind. The aroma is what goes into it, malts and hops combine to produce a carnival of caramel-apple and cotton candy aromas sprinkled with pine needle dust. Robustly flavored and tense full-bodied texture, which tastes like burnt caramel and pine.
3.912oz can from Reid Market. (This beer is marketed as an imperial red ipa.) Toasted nutty aromas, red grape, red berries, caramel. Clear ruby with a mostly lasting off-white head. Mostly dry, some booze, bitter, earthy, nutty. Full bodied.
3.6Pale copper pour with a light reddish hue, soapy white head and lots of sticky lacing .... aroma of juicy fruits, chewy caramel malts and light roasted malts .... taste is of chewy caramel malts, toffee and light roasted malts .... has some citrusy hop oranges mostly with very light pine and resinous hop oils .... finish is citrusy with lingering chewy caramel malts and toffee ... nice bitter hop bite on the back end ... mouthfeel is slick and oily .... body is medium ... abv hidden well
3.6Bottle 650ml @ home
Pours slightly hazy copper with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, alcohol, dried fruits, orange and citrus. Taste is medium sweet and heavy bitter with a long warm, malty, caramel, bitter, orange and citrus finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.
2.222 oz bottle as "Barley wine style ale" shared by ebone1988. 2016 vintage. The pour is a dirty, muddy, orangey ruby color with a thick bubbly cream colored head and a pretty strong soapy lace. The aroma is just not good. There is a bitter hoppiness to it and a horribly balanced sweet malt that turns into an alcoholic mess. The flavor is awful. There is a sweet potato heaviness and a metallic bit. The back end is like a metallic pepper garbage with a horrific aftertaste. The mouth feel is thin and watery with a bright carbonation and a dreadful metallic pepper aftertaste. This is garbage.
3.2America. Rating #1776. Bottle shared with koleminer20. For the book. Aroma is grapefruit, malty, slight booze, pine, bitter, interesting. Appearance is amber, light tan head, clear. Taste is caramel malt, very hoppy, pine, citrus, tropical fruit, booze, bitter, harsh. Mouthfeel is medium body, light carbonation, harsh bitter caramel and booze aftertaste. Overall, it’s really bitter but I’ve had worse.
4.1Pours a clear dark ruby red with tan head. A strong caramel malt and fruity aroma. A strong malty and hoppy taste with caramel, fruits, citrus and pine. A lingering bitter hop and sweet malt aftertaste.
3.6Copper colour with lasting head. Aroma has lots of sweet malts, quite syrupy. Flavour is bittersweet with caramel and floral hop.

Nice slightly bubbly-creamy longlasting head. Aroma is slightly dry concentrated grassy, leafs, hops, citrus peel, minerals, bark, light malts, alcohol, lawn, moss, paper, pine needles. Taste is slightly concentrated sweet grassy, leafs, weeds, minerals, sugar, bark, alcohol, pine needles, moss, hops, paper, citrus peel, sap. Medium to longlasting bitterness, slightly harsh boozy mouthfeel. Fair enough.
4.0Bottle. Pours a clear deep amber body with a medium white head. Nose is peaches, red fruits, cinnamon, caramel, toffee, rose water and hints of red berries and canned pears. Taste is red fruits, peaches, alcohol, caramel, rose water and hints of pine, resin, licorice and raisins. Medium to full body, medium to soft carbonation. Very easy-going and dangerously drinkable, this is an American barley wine I can dig.
0.5Saw a 4 pack of cans with Hog Heaven on them. But it said Imperial Red IPA, so I didn’t bother with it. I wanted the Barleywine. So disregard the rating above. I did not try their new red IPA.
3.80.33 bottle. Pours hazy orange, white head. Aroma is candy, peach, alcohol vapors, fruity hops. Medium body, low carbonation, silky mouthfeel. Flavors: hoppy caramel, malts. You can feel the alcohol warmth. Bitter finish. Good for my first barley wine.
3.6My bottle says Hog Heaven Imperial Red IPA, not sure why it falls under being a barley wine. But that is for better minds to figure out. The bomber delivers a caramel red body with an off-white head with some serious bubbling action. The smell, I am not sure, but maybe this where the wine thing comes in. It does lean towards a grain and wine scent. I find the taste much more appealing. I get a strong hit of hops, melon and citrus, a light sweetness and finishing with a long bitterness. Definitely the alcohol is there in the background. Different, not bad, just not something I get all excited about.
3.7Pours a soft mahogany with a frothy white head that stays long. Psycho lacing. Nose is piney with a bold malt component. Taste is well balanced with an astringent finish. Somewhat dank aftertaste. Very nice brew.
3.1Avery usually makes my mouth happy but overall this one could have been better. It was not very flavorful. it was a beautiful pour with a nice, rusty orange coloration and had a nice head that held on through the bottle. It’ was a bit dry for my palate which may be why I missed the sweetness I expected.
3.3Not sure date but smelling it seems a few yrs possibly 1. Rusty orange. Light oxidized hops cherry like , mild pine, sweet stale cereal buiscuity malts. Solid taste of malts and spent hops, cherry , some dry, smooth, malty. Good barleywine, not really complex, malty simple and seems overall a little oxidized, think I would like to have this fresh or stored better. I enjoyed it but poorly store or something, found out its about 8 mo old.
3.0Pours a. Lousy orange-golden with an ample pale tan head. Tangy hoppy nose. A lot of syrupy, sweet malt as well. Certainly has a strong malty character with a prominently hopped presence yields a sharp and progressively harsh palate experience. Not in love with it.
4.0Draft pour at the Collective, enjoyed meny times over the years. And one of the first barleywines that I can remember. Clear amber pour. Almost no head. Sweet carmal hoppy flavor nothing overwhelming just a really good balanced beer.
3.9Bomber. Pours a very hazy orange with an off white head. Aromas of candied fruits, peach, yeast, straw, hops, and alcohol. Medium body, silky mouthfeel. Dark cherries, apricot, very ripe peach, caramel balanced bitterness. Some bitterness and alcohol in the finish.
3.8Bottled. Pours deep golden with a small off-white head. Aroma of toasted caramel, dark dried fruit and hoppy notes. Sweet flavor that ends up being more dry and quite bitter. Medium to full body, oily to syrupy texture and soft carbonation. A very nice Barely indeed.🌟🌟🌟🌟
3.4Draught at the Avery Brewing Co, Boulder, CO.
Cloudy amberish golden color with a mid-size foamy off-white head.
Deep hoppy aroma with moderate bitterness, caramel sweetness and darkish maltiness.
Strong dark West Coast hops, strong bitterness, dryness and mild malt. Really strong bitterness.
3.6[9/7/2016] On tap at Churchkey : Dark amber body. Hoppy and barley nose. Taste of barley, cheesy notes, malts. Clean, alcy finish. Enjoyable. Quite strong.
3.6Hazy dark orange with a pale head. Aroma is baked pineapple, tropical fruit, candied orange peel. Medium bodied, starts sweet on the palate with a bitter finish. Taste is burnt orange, baked pineapple, tropical fruit.
3.7Pours a bright rich Amber. Room temp now. Nose is piney, dripping ripe peach, dark cherry, burnt caramel, high floral notes. Flavor starts floral and delicately fruity, mealy apples and bright flowers, sweet malt, balanced bitterness with ripe peach stonefruit. Linger carries on stickily but with a string lingering bitterness to rise up to it. Nothing out of the ordinary but VERY well-done.
