4.4On tap at Avery. Pours a dark black color with a fizzy tan head into a taster glass. Aroma is super heavy on roasted coffee with some earthy chocolate undertones. Although it smells almost like a fresh cup of brewed coffee. The coffee flavor is ever present in the first sip however you get the nice malty boozy flavors as well. You really cannot even notice the hoppiness of it and the alcohol is hidden very well. It has an overall velvety slick mouthfeel that I greatly enjoy and a good carbonation level. Overall this is a phenominal beer.
4.0Dark brown w tan head. Aroma is nutty, earthy, coffee. Flavor is amazing roasted coffee, dark chocolate, intense cocoa and coffee grounds. Finish is bitter dark chocolate and coffee. Great coffee beer.
4.5Had on draft, never thought i’d get to try this- been a high want for years! .. . deep black, mild foam .. . espresso craziness .. . slick full mouth, mild heat in the throat .. . just a fantastic beer, and looking forward to the bottles that will be released soon! .. . . Embiggens is a perfectly cromulent word.
4.4On tap at the Attic. Huge coffee aroma - seriously, the dark-roast coffee is so strong I can smell it from the snifter sitting a foot away on the table - with bold roasted barley, and some phenolic smoked BBQ. Flat obsidian in color with a light brown head. Incredibly rich taste of espresso, dark chocolate, molasses, a little anise and tree bark, and vanilla beans. Not surprisingly, it’s super hot, but it doesn’t hurt the beer at all. Another amazing imperial stout from Avery.
4.2On tap at the Attic. Dark brown, almost black pour with a tan head. Lots of espresso coffee in the nose. Alcohol is hidden well. Chocolate, coffee and light bitter finish. Damn good!
4.3Tap. Pours black with tan head. Aromas of strong coffee! Very rich flavors, espresso, not much heat, really good and easy. Great beer.
3.9Sampled many, many times, finally rating it. Pours a black, sludgy, and thick with a small tan head. Aroma of espresso, sweet malts, dark fruits, lots of booze and sherry like sweetness. Cocoa, dark chocolate, burnt sugar notes as well. Tobacco, oak, wet wood. This is obviously huge. Flavor is big, sweet, rich, massive. Overall, though, perhaps against all odds, it ends up going together nicely. As long as it’s a small pour, this is nice. Big mouthfeel. Finishes boozey and sweet.
4.0Draft @ GABF 2013. Pours a black color with a small tan head. Has a roasted malty coffee and chocolate aroma. Roasted thick malty coffee and chocolate flavor. Has a roasted malty coffee and bitter chocolate finish.
2.7sampled at the taproom pours a dark black with a tan head. big coffee aroma and taste.
3.9Taster poured at Avery taproom. Beer poured very dark with nice amount of tan head. Smells like coffee. Tastes extremely like coffee. Alcohol content is well hidden.
3.8Sample at GABF. Pumped to get to the big beers of Avery. Had the regular Meph, but this is just whoa big. Big monsterous boozy, raisin, cocoa, coffee, leathery. Viscous mouth. Whoa!
4.1On tap at GABF. Pours jet black. Huge aroma of expresso and malt. Very smooth for over 15% with great hiding of the booziness. Very drinkable for it’s huge body. Smooth and really huge hints of coffee. Great stuff and really over the top.
4.1On tap @ GABF. One of the beers I most wanted to try. Black pour from with very little, if any, head. Nose is pure coffee. Coffee liqueur, espresso, and rich dark chocolate. Roasted malt, slight alcohol, and sweet vanilla and caramel. Coffee dominates the palate. Sweet vanilla, caramel, and tons of coffee. Plenty of roast, dark chocolate, and a touch of booze.
4.1On tap at GABF 2013, big roasted malt and hops, taste is chocolate and some spice notes with coffee.
3.7Mighty boozy sweet heavy coffee chocolate oily thick monster of a beer but not easy to drink.
4.1Sample at the 2013 GABF. Pours black with a tan head. Coffee nose. Flavors of coffee, chocolate, dark red stone fruits, tobacco and oak. Bitter roast finish.
4.2Sample at GABF 2013. Pours near black with a small beige head. Aroma of massive coffee, roast, molasses, toffee, dark chocolate and light soy. Flavour is heavy sweet and bitter. Thick syrupy mouthfeel. Full bodied with soft carbonation.
4.1Sample @ GABF 13. Pours a pitch black brew with a medium sized, creamy beige head on top. Aroma is massive coffee, oaks and peppers. Flavour is sweet, licorice and peppery. Some alcoholic burning sensation in the back of the flavor. Sweetness is a bit overwhelming sometimes, but it’s still a very decent brew.
4.2Special tapping at Avery's for GABF 2013. After drinking a pint of out of mind, I find this ridiculously strong. Not in a bad way at all. This beer is quit enjoyable.
Very dark brown pour (zero transparency), with a thick dark tan head. The flair is quite intense, with a strong bitterness from the coffee. At 16% alc, this is not a session beer; but considering the strong palate it's quite drinkable. Overall this beer is a fantastic and unique imperial stout.
4.0Yummy stuff, whatever they’re calling it this year. Lots of coffee aroma and flavor with chocolate, malt and smoky accents. Thank you sir, may I have another?
4.0Draft at the brewery. Pours an opaque brown - near black - with a finger of dark tan head. Looks good. Aroma of coffee, molasses, chocolate, dates, and a lot of dry, toasty, and roasty malts. The flavor is the same, but with more dark chocolate and a more obvious Belgian character. Full-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a rich, roasty mouthfeel. So rich. Some bitterness. For one of the highest-rated coffee stouts ever, this was a little disappointing. I liked it but had higher expectations.
4.4Tap
Appearance: Oily black
Aroma: Coffee, alcohol
Taste: Very complex, and intense combination of flavors; coffee, bready malts, dark fruit
Palate: Warm alcohol finish
Overall: Big, chewy, exceptional stout
(from notes)
4.2On tap at brewpub on 060913. Pours black with a tan head. Aroma has lots of coffee, as it warms up dried fruits, caramel, malt and alcohol is coming through. Taste is coffee and bitter chocolate and sweet dark fruits and alcohol. Medium to full body with a soft carbonation, finish is light bitter chocolate and warming alcohol.
4.2On tap the brewery. Pour is pitch black with a frothy brown head and great lacing. Big coffee, chocolate, light bourbon, woody, vanilla, light anise, and licorice in the aroma. Taste is big dark chocolate, espresso, vanilla, big wood, dark fruits, toffee, and caramel with a little heat on the backend. Sticky mouthfeel with soft carbonation. Amazing stout and I can’t believe it’s that high in alcohol.
5.0Had it at the 2013EBF, great beer espresso beer, I was blown away by this offering by Avery, I’m happy I had the luck of drinking this. Had to rate it a 5
5.0(Critique chaotique du extreme beer fest 2013): J’aurais probablement payé le prix d’entrée juste pour la respirer. Le scientifique fou qui a réussi à intégrer la juste (voire déraisonable) dose de café, mérite d’être canonisé. Hellsspresso!!!!!!!
4.2On draft at Churchkey in D.C.
Served alongside Avery Mephistopheles.
The beer is black with a quarter inch of oily, dark beige head. The aroma offers a potent dose of rich coffee, followed by light booze, roast, espresso, malt, chocolate. What a bold flavor! Rich and intense with a grand coffee presence. Alcohol warmth in the finish, but not nearly the heat I was expecting and even fearing from a beer of this stature. Full bodied with moderately low carbonation. A delightful brew to sip and savor. I’m so glad I finally came across this one. Delicious.
4.3On tap at EBF 3/16/13.
Smells of coffee in spades, but there is a roasty and caramel malty sweetness underneath that works really well to counter the bitter coffee flavor. the big abv is brilliantly masked, I love this beer.
4.3On tap at Southern Sun. Pours a dark, opaque brown with a finger of quickly settling light brown head. Sheets of thin lacing. Aroma is strong roasted coffee with significant alcohol. Flavor is rich, slightly bitter, roasted coffee up front, espresso, toffee, and dark chocolate. Hints of rum and stone fruit. Roasted, coffee, and bitter finish that lingers. Incredible masking of alcohol, can hardly be tasted under all the coffee and malts. Soft carbonation, very full body, and full, thick texture. Warm finish, alcohol is more noticeable in feeling than in the taste. Super rich, strong, smooth, the ultimate coffee beer and an incredible rendition of an already amazing brew. Liked it so much I had to have a few.
4.3Smells of strong coffee. Taste strong coffee with a slight alcohol bite. Very drinkable!
