Avery New World Porter

Avery New World Porter

A traditional black porter, with a surprise twist - it's dry-hopped!! We've expanded the porter category a bit, adding a delightful, dry hop aroma to blend with the sweet caramel and chocolate characteristics of a Robust Porter.

3.8 "hopped as heavily as some imperial porters, without the big body or heavy roasted flavors and abv. the body is a little thin, but smooth. the aroma and taste with the malt and dry hopped balance really works, especially as it warms. if it had more body, it’d be among my favorite porters."
1.9 Julie says very hoppy and did not like it. Julie gives a 2.0
3.8 Deep brown pour with tight tan head and lace. Aroma is sweet roasted malt and chocolate. Flavor is sweet chocolate start that transitions to a hard malt bitter. Light fruity esters and a light touch of abv warmth. Medium bodied with good carbonation. A touch foamy but not over the top. Bordered on a harsh bitter finish.
4.2 9/VIII/14 - 12Fl. Oz. bottle @ home - BB: n/a, bought in May (2014-897)Thanks to Skatje M. for the bottle! Clear dark brown beer, irregular beige creamy to rocky head, pretty stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: nutty, caramel, bit roasted, mocha, yeasty, somehwat sourish? MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: some caramel, bit sweet, roasted, mocha, little sour, pretty hoppy, coffee, bit sugary. Aftertaste: bit fruity, mocha, coffee, hops, dark chocolate. Very decent.
3.5 Bottle. Pours black with white head. Aroma us bitter coffee, nothing else. Taste is the same, quite bitter. Coffee in the back end. Not my favorite.
3.7 33 cl. bottle split by 3 @ “Memorabel Tastingkje”. Thanks to tderoeck! Spare tanned head, hazy brown dark amber. Bit thin sweet bread, caramel, cereal, toffee, faint leather, plum, allspice going into a strong gravy / touch soy sauce finish, touch herbal but only light bitterness. Bit thin for the style, not bad at all but I have had a lot better beers in this style.
3.8 Pours black. Aroma is chocolate and caramel. Taste is sweet with a bitter finish.
3.2 carried over from untapped to try and organize my beers in one spot for synchronicity.
3.1 A decent porter, nothing too fancy. Pours a reddish-black, could be a bit thicker though. Smells of chocolate and coffee. Taste has some sweet chocolate upfront, with lots of coffee in the finish. Had on tap at Amsterdam Ale House in NYC.
3.6 Pours a dark brown, almost black, with a medium tan head. Aroma consists of heavier chocolate with a caramel compliment. Undertones are licorice, coffee, and some light vanilla and smokiness. The taste remains dominated by chocolate, although there are some serious coffee flavors in here as well. Its rather earthy as well. Mild caramel and some very light smoke are also found. Aftertaste is a long and lingering coffee. This one is medium in body. The texture is thicker, while being slightly oily and slick, while having softer carbonation. I can’t say this is out of this world, but its a solid porter.
3.6 Bottle. Chocolate fudge malt and light orange peel aroma. Black-brown with small head. Sweet chocolate malt and moderately bitter orange peel flavor. Interesting - pretty hoppy.
4.0 Pours an opaque black with a frothy khaki colored head and excellent lacing. Aroma has a nice amount of citrusy hops, chocolate, a little sweetness and slight roasted malt. Taste has a bold but smooth roasted malt flavor with some citrus and dark chocolate. A mild amount of char flavor and a rounded bitterness in the aftertaste. Finishes with some chocolate and lingering bitterness. Mouthfeel is semi creamy with a medium/full body and moderate carbonation. Flavors are very well integrated and compliment each other nicely. I’m usually not a fan of hoppy porters but this one has everything in balance and it all melds perfectly.
3.7 12 oz bottle pours black with a tan head. Aroma of chocolate, malts and some cocoa. Taste is coffee and malts.
3.7 Bottle: Very deep red-brown with a chunky light brown head. Chocolate, coffee, roast aroma. Taste is chocolate powder, singed coffee, piney hops. Tastes a great deal like a BIPA....nicely done, no matter what species it is.
3.5 A nice porter. Dark brown pour with some ruby notes, a fizzy off-brown-white head that dissipates quickly. Some roasted malts in the nose. Malts and bitter coffee on the tongue. A touch of sourness. A bit light and fizzy on the mouthfeel and the finish is overhopped for a porter IMO. But all-in-all a delicious beer.
2.2 It just didnt work for me, i had IPA souts but never a porter IPA and there is a reason why, the flavors just dont Pop and it ends being a mess
3.4 Pours deep maroon with pretty much no head at all. No kidding on the dry hop. I was expecting something akin to the super pine black IPAs, this is much closer to a citrusy APA instead on the aroma. With dark malt of course. Sweet and fruity flavors, sort of like a fancy chocolate with filling. Solid mouthfeel, perhaps a bit on the thin side. It’s certainly an interesting concept and drink, I think I prefer porters with traditional English hops instead.
3.7 bottle. near black with one finger head. i’ve had plenty of hoppy stouts, but never a hoppy porter. it works quite well. plenty of roasty chocolate malt. medium hops.
4.0 Transfer from BA review on 3-16-12 - Served in a 10 oz chalice glass Appearance – Served a deep brown almost black color with a thin tan head. The small head faded fast giving a fair amount of lacing. Smell –Sweet candy like aromas are the biggest and boldest. There is bit of licorious in there, but the aromas are really much sweeter candy flavor, almost of root beer and chocolate hard candies. Some roasty aromas are present as well, although they are hidden and quite weak in comparison the sweeter aromas. Overall it is a rather unique, but enjoyable aroma. Taste – A sweeter taste of some chocolate and a little bit of coffee are present initially. There is a nice dark malty backbone with some hints of sweet vanilla more toward the middle of the taste. At the very end there is a surge of hoppy flavors with the sweeter flavors fading to more bitter flavors. The bitter hoppy flavors and bitter flavors of chocolate and coffee take the taste to the end. Mouthfeel – The mouthfeel is on the creamier side with a rather moderate to slightly below average carbonation level. For the style of the beer it was very fitting and made the beer very amendable to linger in the mouth for experiencing the whole flavor profile. Overall – A nice slightly sweeter porter with a nice aroma, mouthfeel and taste. Avery did a nice job here.
3.7 Bottle into a tulip glass. Pour is a black brown head. Aroma is a coffee, caramel and citrus. Taste is a rich, chocolate, coffee and citrus. Finish is warm hop.
3.6 Black in color. Malt and caramel at the nose. Bittersweet taste of caramel and roasted malt with a bit of fruity hops. Dry aftertaste
3.5 Pours very dark brown, half finger tan head, nice lacing. Aroma bready malt, toffee, chocolate, earthy piney hops. Taste slightly bitter pine, bittersweet chocolate, coffee grinds, bready and roast malt faint citrus on finish. Mouthfeel medium-full body, lower carbonation, balanced finish. Overall tasty, complex, slightly on the bitter side, close to black ipa, but not quite.
3.4 Pours a dark cola brown with a large, bumpy, tan head. Cherry, chocolate wine, and coffee aromas. Pretends to be a little heavier in the moith than it really is. Cherry up front, dark chocolate, then quick cough syrup. Lingering smokiness.
3.7 Bottled. Pours deep broen with a small tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, caramel and chocolate and hoppy notes. Sweet flavor that ends up dry an with bitter notes. Medium to full body, oily texture and average carb. An excellent porter.
3.2 Draft. Muddy brown pour with no head. Aroma is caramel, slight nuttiness, earthy. Taste is toffee, caramel...these two stand out more than anything. Sweeter than I would like in a porter. Coffee and chocolate are there but not as pronounced.
3.3 12oz bottle. I love this brewery. This is a solid porter. Malty chocolate aromas with a solid heavy finish. If you like this style and anything else that this brewery makes give it a shot.
3.4 3/30/14. Draft at Beer Market. Pours with a thin head. Nice dark and slightly sweet nose. Good balance of hop and malt with fairly complex roasted notes. Somewhat thin traditional porter mouthfeel.
3.7 Pours dark brown with almost no head. Aroma is roasted malts and hops. I had no idea this was a black IPA until I read the bottle. Didn’t expect the strong hop aroma. Taste is dark chocolate and hops. Not much of a porter taste except on the backend, but it’s a pretty decent black IPA.
3.5 Some malty coffee flavors, some biscut/toast as well along with a touch of nutty chocolateness. Not a whole lot of head, almost no real prominent aroma that I could note.
