Avery Out of Bounds Stout

Avery Out of Bounds Stout

This big, roasty stout takes flavor to the extreme. We aren’t afraid to use plenty of rich roasted barley and a mountain of hops to give this full-bodied stout that little extra something you’ve been looking for in a beer.

3.8 Slightly fruity scent. The taste is the same with a little more dark tones. Good bitterness that fills the upper part of the mouth for a long time. Good beer. Follow me @ Kung av öl @ Facebook for more pictures and ratings.
3.6 Black pour with a ruby hue and thin beige head with light sticky lacing ..... aroma of chocolate, roasted malts, light licorice and a ..... taste is of roasted malts, semi sweet chocolate, cocoa and light licorice .... some dry bitter bite on the backend along with lingering roasted and chocolate malts in the finish ..... soft mouthfeel and a medium body ..... sessionable decent stout
4.0 Pours black as night with a tall tan head that takes its time dissipating. Smells of sweet, malt, and toffee. Tastes of burnt caramel (in a good way), toffee, and dark chocolate. Wonderful mouthfeel. Doesn't burn like 6 plus % can. Great.
3.4 @ Akkurat 17-4-28: lätt rökighet med en tydlig sötma. Smaken är lite jobbig med den samma sötman och et lite snäv av aska.
3.6 Bottled on 7/11/16. Served from bottle into glass at home. Pours deep black, completely opaque, with a small short lived but still velvety tawny colored head. Aroma full of roasted malt, lightly burnt toast and a little dark chocolate. No detectable hop aroma. More dark roasted malt flavor with bittersweet chocolate. No detectable hop flavor. Medium bitterness, medium carbonation and a dry finish. No alcohol flavor detected. Full bodied with a smooth creamy texture. The bottle label describes large amounts of hops used in the brewing but that is undetectable in the glass, although this may just be a matter of age. Overall this beer has an uncomplicated straightforward aroma and flavor but a great mouthfeel and finish.
3.2 Excellent stout with low ABV velocity. Too mild to be interesting, but the exact taste and mouthfeel you want. Dark and roasty with character. Unfortunate that it is so low as to be a bit pointless. I guess I want all stouts to be around 10%, preferably 11. Good picture on front of can, very mild. A quaint picture of what a great stout should be, you paid your ticket for a preview. Altogether, one of the more decent canned stouts selling, doesn’t give off that watery feeling like you got ripped off because it’s not a thick stout. I think stouts should pour like coffee mixed with a chocolate shake, left in the dimmest darkest well to magically age into something better--which you actually get from this. Can’t go wrong if you’re not looking for a lot of fun--such as the 9% and beyond classics.
2.9 Can. A- Roasty, cocoa, char. A- Black color, black liquid, light brown head. T- Dry, roasty, cocoa, bitter, subtle char. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, bitter finish. O- Pretty roasty and bitter. A straightforward stout with no extra foo foo flavors. If you want traditional, here you go. Not my favorite stout, but not bad.
3.8 What’s going on here. My reviews keep getting swallowed by the net. Pours a near cola color. Dark. About two fingers cocoa head. Good retention, good lacing. Aroma is coffee grounds, light chocolate. Some fig, some cherry. Some char and smoke, good dose of dark roasted malt. Oh, and coffee. Taste is mostly coffee, not so much chocolate. Pretty sweet overall, save for some coffee-like bitterness. Malty. Tasty. Mouthfeel is medium bodied. Creamy and smooth mostly, but a surprising blast of alcohol bitter burn at the very end into the swallow. That’s a little unpleasant. Overall,a good stout. I’d drink and buy it again. I’d recommend it, particularly for a dark beer. They’re not so bad.....
3.0 Pours from can a deep chocolate bordering on black, so dark it’s almost opaque but does show clear burgundy highlights against the light. Medium tan head diminishes steadily but does leave some lacing and a bit of skim. To get any hint of complexity, either from the aroma or on the palate, this beer must be served close to room temperature. Too much chill shuts it down. Avery does deserve some credit for reining in the alcohol to 6.5 percent ABV while still attempting to live by the debatable credo that "bigger is better." The initial nose is just roasted to charred malt and some coffee. That improves somewhat with aeration and a temperature rise, but still doesn’t present many other notes. The palate adds bitter chocolate and just a hint of licorice, but they take a while to emerge as the char subsides and the coffee moderates from ready to toss to drinkable. A bit of creaminess boosts the rather thin body, while hop sourness is not needed for what is otherwise a nicely dry finish. In a world full of good stouts, this one seems tailored to the West Coast USA taste niche.
3.7 Opaque black but a fair amount of carbonation visible on the side of the glass. Thin head that stays around for quite a while. Aroma is mostly coffee and cocoa. Flavor is roasty malts. Simple and clean -- a nice alternative to the "bigger is better" craze in the stout world.
3.9 Bottle from the Beergium Web Shop. Black pour with a beige head. Aromas of chocolate, licorice, coffee, cocoa, sweet malt. Flavours of dark chocolate, coffee, sweet dark malts, licorice. Dry, bitter approach in the aftertaste. Exceedingly good stout.
3.5 12 oz bottle. Bottled on 7/11/16. At the O’Hara’s, Tampere, Finland. Black color with a small tan head. The aroma is dark malt, licorice, dryness and mild berry notes. The flavor is strong licorice, roasted malt, mild hops and dryness.
3.8 hay, toast, roasty, earthy, woody, dark brown, minimal head, medium body, creamy, long finish,
3.7 Pours black with a tan head. Roasted malt and vanilla aroma. Flavor is roasted malt with smoke. Dry roasted finish.
2.3 Very roasty with a big coffee nose and taste. The palate was a bit thin for me and really a bit watery. Good but very forgettable.
2.5 12 oz. can. Pour was black, small tan head. Aroma was coffee, dark chocolate, roasted grain. Taste was bitter, coffee.
4.4 Avery tends to make a good Stout no matter the strength. As one of their lighter ABV Stouts, Out of Bounds is just as rich and satisfying as some of their black behemoths. It’s an exceptionally beautiful pour that showcases the reverse drag beer phenomenon of downward-flowing bubbles and the foam settling to blackness as the glass fills - the kind of thing I never get tired of watching. This beer smells and tastes as good as it looks too. Rich, roasty, and slightly creamy. Dark chocolate and coffee notes with subtler hints of licorice and dark fruit. Some bright, lightly bitter roasted character at the start and a dry finish. If I were passing the evening in a pub, I could drink this all night.
3.9 Balanced. Black berries with milk and a bit of licorice and vanilla with roasted malts. Bit simple. Still great stout.
3.6 12oz bottle. Pours dark brown with a large beige head. Aroma is roasted malt and a bit of licorice. Taste is roasty with chocolate, coffee, hints of berry and a little char. Full body. Soft carbonation. Smooth, silky mouthfeel.
3.9 This is a very well made stout. Strong roasty character throughout with some char notes. Solid balance. Full satisfying body, velvety feel.
3.8 Bottle at home. Pours black, nose is chocolate, roasted, liquorice, taste is sweet, chocolate, roasted, light liquorice.
3.7 Dry stout from this Boulder-based brewery, with pale yellowish beige, creamy, medium thick head, slowly diminishing in the middle and leaving small dots of lacing on the edge of the glass; very dark, hazy chestnut brown robe with burgundy hue, black in general appearance but in fact still translucent if you look closely. Aroma is heavily dominated by umami elements: strong gravy, beef stock cubes and broth, over more subtle elements like coffee grounds, leather, bayleaf, old black chocolate, blackcurrant, fig, black olive, coffee cream. Soft sweetishness in the onset, subtle dried banana and dried fig, immediately overcome by the umami factor, very meaty and beefy, gravy-like, with the expected undercurrent of roasted barley sourishness accompanying it; carbo is soft, resulting in a ’moelleux’, fatty and oily body, gliding thickly but smoothly over the tongue and leaving behind a deeply nutty and toasted maltiness which develops into coffeeish roasted bitterness in the end, supported by the promised dosis of peppery, herbal hop bitterness, bit resinous even. Spicy and malty finish, roasted bitterness filling the back of the mouth, but some of the nutty sweetishness remains behind too along with a notable, late, more delicate coffee-like aspect. Decent and enjoyable stout, nice thick body in spite of having ’only’ 6.3% ABV, but heavily tilted towards the umami side which I think will not please anyone. I liked it.
3.6 Bottle in wine glass. A perfectly balanced stout with mild yet firm and persistent roasted coffee notes and a finish that really show the perfect choice and add of hops.
3.3 12 oz. bottle. Pitch black, with a medium, beige head. Cocoa, anise, molasses, and burnt toast. Sweet and malty up front, with a smooth, significantly bitterness that follows. Medium body, syrupy, a bit acerbic, and clingy through the finish. This is a solid, very roasty stout. A little harsh and sticky, but flavorful and thick.
3.9 On tap at the brewery October 2014. Pours a dark brown with ruby hue and large beige head that lasts. The aroma is roast, toffee, and chocolate. Light body, roast, grain, velvet finish, very good.
3.5 sample from bottle, poured a darker brown to black colour with a light tanned head. nose of sweet roasted malts, ash, dark dried red fruits, coffee, and light sweet chocolate. taste is sweet upfront, leading to a dry ashy aftertaste.
3.7 355 ml bottle @ Olutravintola Konttori. Pours black color with a small beige head. Aroma is very roasty and malty, some oat notes, dry bready and hoppy. Flavor is somewhat thick with malts and bread, cocoa notes, hop bitterness and faint vanilla. Bitter palate, almost creamy with its thickness. Very pleasant low abv (within Avery scale) brew. 4425
3.9 BOD 327/15. Pitch black pour. Normal head volume, outstanding lacing and retention. Very good nose of light chocolate, roast, malt with a caramel note, a bit of char and an odd berry like fruitiness. Had it had more intensity, it would rate outstanding. Medium body that is very smooth and has a light creamy aspect, especially on the finish. Outstanding carbonation / body balance with just enough middle effervescence to open it up and still deliver a light prickly finish. The flavor profile is hard to rate due to the strong berry flavor (raspberry and blue berry) since the description has no mention of these additives. However, what’s in the glass is outstanding, albeit lacking a bit of intensity. It begins with light roast then flows to bakers chocolate. The middle has slightly sweet underpinnings that a light herbal hop note cascades over. Bitterness is very mild and has some hop flavor but is mostly roast with a bit of char. From the middle on fruit takes center stage and coasts through the finish over a bit of char with a nice herbal hop note.
4.0 12 oz. bottle from Pacific Liquor. Strong dark coffee and dark chocolate aromas, with a hint of sweet malt and cream. A black pour with a minimal khaki head that leaves lacing. Has a dry feel in the mouth but packs plenty of flavor, including a slight sour tang. Well balanced sweet and bitter with chocolatey goodness and coffee bite. Full body, creamy and oily texture, soft carbonation, bittersweet finish. This is very flavorful and interesting for a beer at 6.3% abv.
