Avery The Reverend

Avery The Reverend

The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of Sales Mgr. Tom Boogaard's grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to both our "small brewery, BIG BEERS" philosophy and to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content. Cellarable for 4 years.

3.6 12oz can from slice and biscuit. Normal enough pour, dark amber, light mahogany hue, small ring of bubbly head. Smell is also right on, raisins, plums, a bit of Belgian yeast. Taste is definitely spot-on, right in the zone. Overall feel is just a little bit lacking. Still up pretty high quality quad but just shy of a superior quad
3.5 I was really hoping that this would be better than it was. I haven't really had a ton of Belgian's to compare this to, but most of them that I have had were probably better than this. I like sweet malty beers, but this was a little over the top. Brown sugar, plum, some banana perhaps.....lots of stuff to ferment to bring it to 10%, but the overall flavor just wasn't doing it for me. With all the sweet flavors going on, this was actually a bitter beer as well. I enjoyed it a little more towards the end and was a decent all around beer, but for the price I may have been forcing myself to like it better than it really is. Another brew by Avery that doesn't seem to justify the cost. IMO, there are better options out there.
3.4 Mighty unsure of a quad that comes from a 12 oz can. But here it is in my hand so let's give it a shot. This beer was picked up in Santa Fe in the early fall. Pop the tab and in it goes to my tulip glass. I see a black-gold liquid, curious, finished by a strong eggshell white head. The scent, decent, fills the room, yellow fruit, grain, ribbon candy. Again not exactly quadrupel standard. But all this is the lead up to the taste. I would call it more a Belgian ale inclination. There is some red plum, malt, a touch of cane sugar sweetness, red cherry. The 10% abv is completely covered. Not bad, not great. a departure from the expected at best.
3.8 Backlog entry prior to closing out 2017. Well rounded, as expected. Nothing too unusual. It's strong.
2.8 Cinnamon, clove, and perhaps some tomato? More of a watery dubbel than a quad
2.8 From Apr 2007 This one pours from foil wrapped 22oz bottle a clear copper colour witha large head of foam that shrank quickly leaving a fine broken layer with some lacing. The smell is of yeast and fruit, mainly dark fruit. Quite nice. The taste is mainly fruit up front. I can taste some fig, apricot, plum, followed by a strong yeast flavour , some candy sugar, and some bread. More sips in and the alcohol becomes more noticeable with some graininess coming through as well.To be honest, I can't say the flavours are working very well together and I'm finding it difficult to take more sips. This brew just doesn't work for me, I reckon. Bottom line: This is my first bottle of The Reverend and I'd daresay, it will be my last. The flavours were just too chaotic for my palate.
3.5 can. Deep amber orange with very small head. Sweet with brown sugar, dark fruit, belgian candi sugar and a little spice. Plenty of booze, a little hot. Pretty good, but not elite.
3.6 Can in Seattle. Dark rosy brown, rich mahogany. Rich, fruity raisin on nose, along with alcohol. A bit of dark spice, some ester. Rich and full body, but a touch inelegant. Bit of pepper. Alcohol richness but low burn.
3.2 2009 Bottle from Indiana_Red at a bottle share: At almost 10 years old, super mellowed out, a lot in the aroma that resembles a mead. A little papery in the finish.
3.6 Where: Old Line Fine Wine Spirits & Bistro. How: 12 ounce bottle. Appearance pours a clear dark copper color, 1-2 fingers of white head, sticky lacing. Aroma is dark sugars and darker fruits. Taste is rich and malty to open, lots of caramel and molasses flavors give it a semi-sweet start, lots of overripe dark fruits, raisins and plum. Some hops for spiciness and bittering comes into play later. Palate is well carbonated.... sticky and warming. Overall a pretty solid Quad from Avery. Not the absolute best Quad I’ve ever had but still pretty damned good. Goes down way too easily and would love to try this one barrel aged.
3.5 Bottle @ Bibere, Piraeus. Color amber with medium white head. Aroma malt, caramel, yeast, sweet, alcohol. Taste sweet, caramel, malt, yeast, bitter finish.
5.0 A great American Quad. Bold but smooth. Not overwhelmingly sweet, smooth or boozey. Balanced.
3.6 From a can into wine glass. Brown with off white head small. Chocolate, cherries esters, bread yeast. Sweet, medium carbonation, slight bitterness.
3.6 can @ Cork ’n Bottle / Crescent Springs KY --- Aroma of dark malt and alcohol. Hazy amber brown, beige head that drops quickly to a thin cover, hanging webs of lace. Taste is dark, lightly roasted malt, medium carbonation, and lightly spiced bitters that eventually yield to alcohol. A full-bodied brew, well-balanced and smooth from start to finish. Recommended.
3.4 Pretty good beer. There’s definitely something of about it after the first one. It’s just too hard to get through and too warm. Very much an artsy fartsy beer for the in-crowd. At first I was very pulled in by the cherries, but I hate how this beer hangs on you. It’s like, no matter how cold it is, it’s always warm. And the taste is weird, it doesn’t know what it wants to be. It tastes like a saison and acts like a saison. Instead it’s a quadrupel, and definitely the weakest I’ve had.
3.5 Bottle. Light clear amber light toasted malt some Belgian yeast notes. LingerING abv burn
3.8 One of Avery’s many strong ales, from a can at BeerTemple in Amsterdam. Thick, moussy, egg-white head with slowly opening middle, hazy orangey bronze robe - looking more ’quadrupel’ (as in La Trappe Quadrupel) than ’abt’ (as in Sint-Bernardus 10 Abt). Powerful, enticing bouquet of caramel sauce, marmelade, freshly baked bread, chestnut cream sauce, brandy, grilled horse steak juice, cashew nuts, strawberry wine, hazelnut oil, white port, cane sugar, candied cherry and a faint hint of cooked vegetables in warming up. Candied sweet onset, cherry, almond and marmelade notes, soft with a kind of juicy-meaty umami note, lots of residual candi sugary sweetness as is to be expected from the style, soft carbo, thick, bit fluffy and pleasantly vinous mouthfeel. Big caramelly and nutty malt body, sweetness enhanced by lingering candy sugar, yet nowhere cloying; sweetness also dominates the finish but in a noble, refined way, with hints of chestnut cream sauce, orange zest and amaretto, low in bitterness but still a - welcome - drying, mildly spicy hop character; some retronasal cooked cauliflower notes, probably DMS, but fortunately very limitedly so. Afterglow of gently warming alcohol. Quadrupel in the most classic sense indeed - ’classic’ referring to La Trappe Quadrupel, which has, after all, only been in existence since 1991.
3.4 Cloudy red-brown. Very immature. Light malt, berry and booze aroma. Very light palate for such a strong beer. Notes include wheat, malt, dark fruits, raisins, blackberry, licorice and twigs. Simply not bad.
2.6 16.06.2017, 0,75l bottle shared @ local tasting: Nice slightly bubbly-creamy mediumlasting head. Aroma is slightly sweet mineraly, caramel malts, minerals, grass, grain, hay, cereal, toast, raisins, fruit stones, worth. Taste is slightly sweet grassy, raisins, grass, minerals, hay, fruit stones, weeds, paper, caramel malts, sap, grain. Medium bitterness, slightly watery and harsh mineraly mouthfeel. Boring.
4.2 Pours a brown color with a white foam head. Aroma is caramel, dark fruits, candy sugar, and molasses. Flavor is sweet caramel, candy sugar, dark fruits, and banana. Has a thick body with some carbonation. Very good.
3.7 appearance: dark amber brown, fizzy short beige head. aroma: raisin, fig, toffee, caramel, candi sugar, molasses, port. taste: sweet, with candi sugar and raisin most prominent, then caramel, toffee, molasses, port, and bourbon. finish: lingering sweetness, palate is smooth. notes: This one was in the cellar for a couple years, came out nice and smooth.
3.9 Pours dark amber with a medium frothy off white head. Aromas of caramel, figs, dates, ripe apple, candi sugar. Taste is fruity and malty eith caramel and slight grassy notes. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation.
3.1 malty aroma with notes of raisin and plum. red in color with nice head. taste is malty with rich flavors of raisin, plum, stone fruit, dark caramel malts
3.8 Fairly translucent auburn with one finger of frothy tan head. Strong raisin and molasses aroma. Flavor a mix of dark fruits but raisin comes out strongest. Finish is boozy. Texture is oily.
3.7 Taster at En Öl och Whiskymässa 2017. Cloudy brown, white head. Caramel, malt, spices, fudge, sweet. Tiny bit of alcohol.
4.0 Amber, almost rose, pour, quick head. Nose is spices and malt, maybe a little sherry. Bittersweet. Middle is cherries, medium kilned malt, little cinnamon and allspice, Belgian yeast background ties it together. Finish is fruity and warm. Lookout for the ABV, it is way under the radar. Scarily drinkable.
4.2 Piana nieduża, sycząca, szybko opada do firanki. Barwa miedziana, opalizująca. W zapachu kandyzowane słodkie owoce, rodzynki, świeże morele, melasa, wosk pszczeli - dość przyjemnie i w quadruplowym stylu. W smaku sporo słodyczy w typie fig, kandyzowanych skórek pomarańczy, do tego suszone owoce, syrop klonowy, przyprawy. Goryczka średnia, pikantno ziołowa, w posmaku odrobina tytoniu i świeżych brzoskwiń.
3.8 Pours a copper Amber with an off white head Aroma of maple syrup with molasses. Taste is syrupy with a smokey backbone and slight hop bitterness.
3.5 Dark fruit and chocolate aroma. Cherries very strong. A good beer, but first stack up to the top tier quads of Belgium
