Avery Uncle Jacob's Stout

Avery Uncle Jacob's Stout

Jacob Spears, our 6th Great Grand Uncle, is credited as the first distiller to label his whiskey "Bourbon." He built his distillery in Bourbon County, Kentucky in 1790 - 203 years before began brewing. While obviously a bit too late to produce Uncle Jacob’s wash, we’ve instead created something far more complex. In his honor, we present this robust, silky smooth, full-bodied and altogether extremely American rendition of an Imperial Stout aged for 6 months in the very finest bourbon barrels. This explains a lot about our penchant for big brews! It’s in our blood!

Brewed with Rocky Mountain Water, Malter Barley, Flaked Oats, Hops and Yeast.

4.3 Bottled. The aroma has chocolate, vanilla, bourbon, dark fruits. Black coloured beer with a beige head. The taste is slightly sweet, bit boozy, had vanilla, oak, caramel, chocolate, fruit. Full bodied. Nice one.
3.9 Pours an inky black-brown with a beige bubbly head. Smells of leather, cherry, dark berry and moderate dried fruit, spice, dark malt, lightly smoky bitterness, booze. Taste is chocolate, dark nutty malt, fruity and thick and very spicy, rye, boozy and syrupy and a bit sharp. Body is thick, spicy, slightly chewy and very spicy finish. This is huge! Aroma is fantastic, palate is sticky and spicy, taste is a bit sharp. Not a delicate or restrained beer.
3.9 Bottle from Irvine Whole Foods at home in HK. Rich black pour with tan fine head. Aroma can be smelled across the room - deep chocolate, leather, sharp alcohol, raisin, toasted sugar. Alcohol very strong. Taste is big sharp alcohol, medium dark chocolate bitterness, sweet toasted sugar and dried fruit, coconut nuttiness. Huge flavor. Rich silky palate. Not too heavy despite low carbonation. Alcohol is incredibly strong, can be too much on the aroma. Still, very good enormous barrel aged imperial stout.
4.1 Vintage 2015 bottle. Dark brown to black beer. Two finger beige-brown head. No lacing on the glass. Nose: Caramel malt, brown sugar, alcohol, cocoa, a hint of sour milk... not good. Taste: Coffee, licorice, dark chocolate, vanilla, a lot of alcohol (well it IS 16.9% ABV) cookie, brown sugar and dark bread. Mouth: Medium body. High sweetness and burning alcohol in my mouth. Very much a sipper like a great whiskey. I didn't try this fresh so I can't copmare it but it feels "new" maby because the high ABV.
4.3 Bottle at home, bottled Feb 18. Very dark brown, creamy beige head. Rich chocolate roasted malty, toffee, big boozy bourbon, vanilla, quite sweet, coffee, a tat red vinous, medium bitter in the finish. Not superbly balanced, but good. Velvety smooth mouthfeel, soft carbonation, big body.
4.4 Canned, 355 ml, courtesy of Max. 2018 release. Shared with him and JFK10000. Black with tan head. Coffee, chocolate, some dark fruit, sweet, some pleasant tartness, roasty, complex. Warming. Weaker aroma, but superb taste.
3.4 A 12 fl. oz. bottle, Batch #5, bottled on 19th February 2016. Poured into a snifter glass. It was dark dark brown to black in colour with a one finger mocha head that had decent retention and left sparse spotty lacing. Aromas of bourbon, roasted malts, chocolate, espresso, dark fruit, prunes, plum, raisin, oak, brown sugar and booze, with hints of caramel and banana bread. Tastes boozy, sweet-ish, bourbon, oak, some dark fruit, prunes, with hints of roasted malts and chocolate. Medium to full bodied with soft carbonation. Overall, lots of booze and bourbon, with minimal and not enough Imperial Stout, roasted malts and chocolate. Perhaps closer to a Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy. Definitely a sipper, but also could have been a better balanced Imperial Stout. Just not to my taste.
4.3 Nagyléptű teste mogyorós, pirított magvas, szilvás, cappuccinós aromákat rejt, ördögi leple alatt karamellás, enyhén füstös, aszalványos, s masszívan fás ízjegyek lapulnak. Ragacsos szirupfolyam, de nem a süteményes fajtából - pokoli fenevad ízletes megnyilatkozása, magában hordoz mindent, ami férfias. A szójaszószos, égetett cukros, pörkölt malátás görgeteg sodrásába bourbon-ös, vaníliás, tölgyfahordós elemek olvadnak, az alkohol súlya igen erőteljes lábnyomot hagy a kompozícióban. Különleges alkalmak itala, nem az az ivósör jelleg, nehézsúlyú formátum a kemény téli esték megzabolázásához.
4.6 12 oz bottle served in snifter. Poured completely pitch black with one finger mocha tan head that dissipated quickly. Softly carbonated. Aroma: delicious on the nose, bourbon, toasted oak, chocolate, roasted espresso beans, vanilla, caramel, dark fruit, raisins, plums, burnt molasses, pipe tobacco. Taste: wow...roasted sweet dark malts, bitter dark chocolate, oatmeal, vanilla, espresso, caramel fudge, bourbon, oak, toffee, dark fruit, whole wheat raisins bread, sultana, plums, dates, muscovado sugar, molasses, licorice, dried fruits, candi sugar, nougat. Chewy and sticky mouthfeel. Full body with a very roasted and boozy bittersweet finish. Absolutely delicious dark nectar...
4.2 This bottle just showed up in the inventory, not sure where I bought it. But it is quite cool outside, ideal time to try a new imperial stout. 15.9% abv, oh my, bourbon barreled and bottled on 2/6/18 the label says. I pour into my New Belgium snifter and take a sniff. Very chocolatey and deep with the berries. The body is the expected dark, dark brown, maybe black with a thin medium tan top. The taste, by my estimation, jeez, really fine.Heavy with the malt, dark chocolate, strawberry, caramel, grain and a strong bitterness completing. A strong taste, all to the good, the alcohol is there but not overpowering.
3.3 Bottle at home, Nivala. Color is almost black with very small brown head. Aromas and flavors: Licorice, dark chocolate and roasted malts. Heavy but somehow drinkable.
3.8 From: itap Chesterfield (R. I. P.) Aroma: malty bourbon and sweet brown sugar Appearance: pours pitch black with a light caramel colored head. Taste: boozy, malt, sugar, bit of chocolate. Not as heavy as the abv would suggest. Palate: smooth and thick, full bodied Overall: up there for me.
4.0 (Bottle, Feb. 24, 2017) Black body with a thin brown head. Aroma of bourbon, wood, vanilla, alcohol, brown sugar, caramel. Full bodied, sticky mouthfeel. Flavor is sweet with lots of bourbon and warming alcohol; woody, vanilla, caramelized sugar, and light spices; dry finish.
4.3 Pretty much like Avery's Tweak, however, one should notice the sweetness that is present in this beer; in contrast, one can find granola notes in here. Overall, a pretty good Imperial Stout.
3.2 06.12.2018, 12 oz bottle (2018 vintage) shared with friends @ home: Nice slightly bubbly-creamy longlasting head. Aroma is slightly sweet mineraly, dark malts, booze, minerals, dark sugar, toast, soil, oak, raisins, vanilla. Taste is sweet boozy, dark sugar, raisins, minerals, booze, fruit stones, licorice, oak, dark malts, "knekk", caramel. Medium to longlasting bitterness, slightly sweet boozy mouthfeel. Fair enough.
4.1 Pours dark, dark brown with no head. Nose is prune/sweet, and boozy. Taste is complex: some sweetness, cocoa, dark fruit, hint of booze. Really good.
4.3 33cl fles. Helder donker bruin kleur, fijne romige bruine schuimkraag. De geur is whisky en chocolade. Smaak is zoet, whisky, koffie, chocolade, karamel en vanille. Vol lichaam, weinig koolzuur.
3.9 Bottle split at L6, thanks to Danny, 31/10/18. Good to catch up with this one that I'd most definitely had in the states pre RB days! Black with a decent tan head. Nose is rich roast, fruit cake, cocoa powder, dried fruits, burnt toffee, brown sugar melt. Taste comprises roast malts, toffee, chocolate dipped raisins, molasses, light spice, fruit loaf, charr, booze tunes. Full bodied, fine carbonation, warming alcohol in the close. Solid impy ... drinks well for such high boost ABV.
4.1 Bottle shared at the Columbus tasting 31/10/2018. Many thanks! An oily brown coloured pout with lasting beige head. Aroma is spicy , cinnamon, solvent, brown sugars, cakey, jamica spices, Flavour is composed of medium sweet, maple, brown sugars, plum jam ,marshmallow. Palate is medium sweet, sticky, moderate cabrboantion. Boozy.
4.3 Bottle. Heavy toasted, dark bread and molasses for the malt, light resin for the hops, light dough for the yeast, with bourbon, licorice and faint baking spices in the background. Head is small, wispy, brown, with fair lacing and good legs, and is mostly diminishing. Color is very dark brown. Flavor starts moderately sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes moderately to heavily sweet and slightly bitter. Palate is full, syrupy, with a soft to lively carbonation and a heavily alcoholic finish. Potent and full of dark and rich aromas and flavors, a slow sipping Imperial Stout for sure.
4.7 (~10/10, malt grillé-choco-osb, ∞-sensuelle, caresses d’oat-orge-bourbon-miel noir-alcool (15,9 !), > robuste-délicate)
3.9 Draft. Black beer with a brown head. Roast and light chocolate aroma with light bourbon. Chocolate and bourbon flavor with toffee. Medium bodied. Toffee and bourbon linger with light licorice, caramel, and chocolate.
4.3 Pours very dark like burnt oil with a very thin tan head. Aromas of prune, raisin and brandy fill the glass. This is a beer that must be allowed to reach it's ideal temperature so that all flavors reach an equilibrium. First taste is complex, very much so. Alcohol is evident as this is a strong beer, but it does not overpower flavors. Prune, raisin, brandy and the bourbon are all there. This is a great after dinner beer.
4.6 Intense, numerous flavors going on - all competing for first place. Beautiful when poured properly. A 'fireplace' beverage, a sipping & deep thinking beverage. Sophisticated, romantic, consume it alone or with the one you love. Perfect. This beer was at Antiques, Art & Beer in Shiner, TX
4.5 Beautiful looking beer. Dark with a brown head. Gives me just a slight peanut butter hint with dark malt and bourbon flavors. Quite nice in small portions.
3.9 12oz bottle from Seattle shared with Andrey. Batch #6, bottled on 2017-02-24. ABV 14.9%. Appearance: very dark brown with a brown head. Aroma: dark fruits, some ink and barrel notes. Taste: moderately to high sweet, boozy notes, bitterness. Overall: pretty good, but I don't think there is a good balance here. There is not enough body for this level of sweetness and booziness as well as a bit more wood. 8-4-8-4-15=39. 355ml bottle. Bottled on 2016-02-19. ABV is 17.1%. Pours a very dark brown with a dark beige head. Aroma is bourbon, oak, some fruits and chocolate. Similar taste with lots of roasted malt bitterness, black chocolate, and booziness. I wish it would be less boozy, as it drinks like a boozy bomb. 8-5-8-5-15=41
