Baird / Ishii / Stone Japanese Green Tea IPA 9.2% (2011)

A wonderful spirit of camaraderie, cooperation and mutual support exists in the world of craft brewing. We have harnessed this spirit fully in the crafting of this special collaborative brew dedicated to the resilient people of Japan who are bravely endeavoring to overcome the tragedy of the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
We tip our brewing hats to the quiet elegance and humble sophistication of Japanese culture through the judicious addition of Japanese whole leaf green tea to this big, bold, spicy and herbal IPA. Cheers, Japan!

3.7 bottle 9/4/11. hazy burnt orange with a soft head and drippy lacing. a= some dank hops, earthy, some umami, citrus-ish, caramel, a little dusty, grassy, tea-like floral notes way in the back, oj and maybe some mild pine. some alcohol is noted...quite a bit actually... additional flavors of peachiness, melon business, caramel, pine, oj, earthy tea notes and spicy notes on the finish. bitterness keeps it drinkable since the medium palate gets a little syrupy. dece. 7/4/7/3/16
3.7 Orange/gold pour with a white head. Aroma has some minor green tea flavor, but mainly citrus and piney notes. Taste is similar and it is an enjoyable IPA.
4.2 A - Pours a very cloudy golden-orange color with a thin finger of frothy white head. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some light lace. S - Aroma is a mix of lemon, grapefruit, and floral hops with some sweet lightly bready malt, green tea, and a bit of candi sugar. T - Starts off with a mix of lemon and grapefruit hops with some bitterness with some sweet, lightly bready malts, and a bit of green tea. Through the middle, some floral and pine hops come through with some more bitterness and some more green tea flavor and a bit of sweet candi sugar. The finish is a mix of sweet candi sugar, citrus and tropical hops, bitterness, and green tea. M - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a dry and bitter finish. D - Very drinkable. Really nice hop profile from start to end with a good amount of bitterness throughout. I also really like the green tea flavor.
3.6 Bottle courtesy of marcotte in Mammoth at maheus bachelor party. Chunky death! Lots of tea particles floating around; nice peppery aroma and flavor. Ends dry with subtle notes of green tea. Pretty good.
4.4 Draught, from last existing keg apparently. (Rating #800) Pours a deep, hazy straw, with a white head. Very hoppy, spicy, herbal aroma, Sorachi (?), grapefruit, nettles, yeast, mint, malt. Dry, medium body, high bitterness, balanced CO2. Hoppy, spicy taste, grapefruit, Sorachi, lime peel, yeast, kiwi, mint, tea leaves, bergamot. (2012-05-01)
3.4 Durhambeer scored me a bottle of this a while back - thanks, Bob! Fairly buoyant pour, golden-orange with a medium head. Strong citrus and pine in the nose, as one would expect, with a settled (not pungent) tea quality coming on late. Mouthfeel is quite smooth, no real heat despite the ABV. Tasted faded already and would have enjoyed this one uber-fresh. But the age did tend to accentuate the leafy flavors a bit, even if the ripe, bitter hops had subsided somewhat. Okay.
3.3 Interesting color... If I hold it up to the light, it looks lemon yellow. If I place it on the table it looks slight peach amber. Fruity citrus aroma. Equally interesting flavor notes of spicy pepper. The pepper really shows up in the aftertaste as it sits in the tongue. Overall, it’s an interesting brew. Very complex but drinkable.
3.3 From notes: Poured hazy orange-amber with a small, white head. Mild citrus hops aroma, with notes of tea and yeast. Perhaps a floral note too. Medium bosy, with maybe a very slight thickness. Taste is lemony, with a mild hops bitterness and maybe a touch of honey in the back. Mild pine notes in a slightly dry finish. Good, but was a touch disappointed. Was expecting more from the tea.
3.7 Bottle, Tan sandy color. Smells of slight hops and grass...taste is similar... dont taste much green tea, but its a very nice easy drinking 2XIPA
4.2 Bottle @ RBESG 2011 Grand Tasting at Dean Swift. Good hop aroma. Hoppy as hell but with a really good perfumed flavour. Good flavours. Good hops on end. One of the beers of the day.
3.6 Gedronken in Brussel bij moeder Lambic, Gele kleur, echt een hele erge groene thee smaak. Wel lekker.
3.7 Bottle from 16 Tons. Light orange in color with a moderate white head that faded quickly. Aroma of citrus fruits and herbal tea notes. Nice mix of grapefruit and herbal tea flavors with well hidden alcohol and a bitter finish. Nice beer for a great cause.
1.6 From notes. First reviewed 8/22/2011. On tap in a short stange at the Stone Tap Takeover at Acre. This has a light hazy golden color with a small white head that laces the glass nicely. The aroma has a green tea base, with a fair amount of lemon, some grapefruit hops, and some biscuity malt. The flavor is terrible. Medicinal flavor, fusel alcohol, green tea, sweet biscuity malt, and some lemon zest are pretty much a mess. Astringent and dry, the mouthfeel is not very good. It also has a light to medium body and medium carbonation. I could not really drink much of this at all. It is definitely the worst Stone beer I have ever had.
3.6 Bottle from Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours orange copper with a modest beige head and a citrus aroma. There is a hearty caramel malt flavor with residual green tea taste and a peppery mouthfeel. An interesting and unique brew that is worth trying.
3.9 Could find this one at the beer store but Lori said sure we have it let me look. Couple boxes moved and we found it. Good citrus nose. Soapy yellow body with good head at first but disapated quickly to nothing. As got half way throgh noticed man sediment just floating like carbination bubbles in pint glass. Also some mud looking substance on the bottom. Good grapefuirt flavor bitter dry resin hops just lite up the palate. Good refreshing brew.
3.0 Bottle from Rick. Pours an average cheddar orange with a nose of crisp, clean grapefruit and pine. Flavor is bitter floral grapefruit and perfumed lipstick. Average mouthfeel. Uber bitter.
3.0 The aroma is very hoppy with citrus hops and a bit of herbal tea but not much. The appearance is orange brown gold with a medium head. The taste is like the aroma. The palate is smooth. Overall a good beer but not exactly what I expected.
3.6 has a smooth presence yet the bitterness is rough and harsh, it has a nice balance of malt and hops but the hops are strong and stylized. the rest of the beer bring together and nice combo.
3.3 THOUGHTS: Pretty much a double IPA with tea. Reminded me of when I mix unsweetened iced-tea with orange juice a little. Very citric. Not enough tea to make me think it wasn’t just a regular DIPA. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a light orange with and average, off-white head that mostly diminished and left fair lacing. It also had tiny to small particles of average to thick density. The aroma had light to moderate caramel and candy; moderate to heavy pine and resinous hops; and lighter citric hops. The initial flavor was light to moderately sweet and moderately bitter; while the finish was moderately sweet and moderately bitter with an average to long duration. There was candy, caramel, tons of citrus hops, all different citrus fruits, a little pine hops and maybe a little honey. The medium body was a little syrupy and sticky on the the lips, but also oily with fizzy carbonation and an ever so slightly metallic finish.
4.2 Pours a nice orange/gold. Strong aroma of fresh hops. Some tea characteristics in the background. Hides the alcohol well.
2.7 Pours a orange soda color with aroma of green tea and spice. Taste of lingering herbs and spicyness. A slight green tea aftertaste that lingers well after you swallow. An interesting take on green tea in a beer.
3.6 Very sweet candied sugar nose. Marshmellows and Macha are also present. Big and sweet though not sticky. Pineapple tang with a slightly coarse flavour that must be the macha. Slightly herbal finish. Solid but not inspiring.
3.7 Tasted on 8/21/11 from a 12oz bottle at Lush West Town. Pours hazy orange with a thick, pillowy, off-white head that slowly recedes to rocky lace. The nose is hoppy with citrus, resin, and a ton more herbal notes than I have ever gotten from an IPA, I assume from the addition of green tea, with some underlying earthy tones and light malt. The flavor is much earthier and more herbal, featuring the green tea very nicely, along with some grapefruit peel and resinous bitter hops, and a nice dose of light caramel malt backing everything up. The body is medium and somewhat oily with average, but very smooth, carbonation, and a long herbal green tea, resin bitter, and grapefruit peel hops.
3.6 Bottle at RBESG 2011 Grand Tasting ... golden amber ... soft sweet malts ... green tea ... little wishy washy nose ... soft zezty fruits ... long green tea linger ... soft bitternesss ... very interesting
3.5 Bottle thanks to Leighton at his pre-xmas extravaganza. It pours cloudy orange, with a thick off-white head. The nose is tangy orange fruit, pine and a faint hint of green tea. The taste is pine, resin, powdered matcha tea, tangy orange fruit (particularly mango), spice, resin and alcohol warmth, with a bitter-citric finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. An interesting and tasty brew.
3.9 amber pour with a cream ehad. nose is fresh citrusy hops, light fruit, tea, and not much else. easy on teh palate, big fruity citrus notes, backed with no sign of alcohol, and green tea in the finish.
3.2 Bottle tasted and notes taken on Darkness Day. Thankfully, it was the first beer of the day! Bottle to glass. Hazy gold with a white head. The aroma contains some really interesting notes of citrus (grapefruit), pine and green tea. I like this beer. I was glad I picked up this bottle. The tea had a nice offset to the citrus and pine. Good pickup
3.8 Lightly hazed gold/orange pour with white head. Sweet full maltiness followed by a nice citrus bitter then a nice abv warmth. Medium/full body with good smooth carbonation. Nice beer not one I could drink many of just for the kick. Flavor is nice if there is tea in there I can’t find it.
3.9 Thanks to IBrew2or3 for sending this one along. Pours a hazy yellow with a small white head. Nose is caramel, herbs, a suggestion of green tea, orange, sweet citrus, caramel, and slight booze. Flavor is a thick blend of sweet malt, caramel, and peaches with a background dose of green tea. Medium to full in body for the style. Nice, complex IIPA.
3.7 Bottle at home in London. Lightly haY gold pour, white foam. Big piney citrus hop aroma. Strong sweet flavor, some caramel, toast, dark sugars, light grass and wood. Medium to full bodied with average carbonation. Lightly warming finish, slightly sticky, some resinous hops, caramel, faint tea, pine. Good beer.
