Baird Kurofune Porter

Baird Kurofune Porter

Kurofune (means "Black Ships") was the word the Japanese used to describe the American gunboats that came to open Japan to western trade. Kurofone Porter is sleek and forceful, but leaves a winning bittersweet taste of chocolate and coffee on the tongue. "Do not resist the superior might; cunningly acquiesce, and embrace." Kampai!

3.4 At the Backstabber’s tasting, pours brown with a small head, aroma of nuts and chocolate, flavor of chocolate, coffee, medium bodied
3.1 Bottle @ Xi’an Craft Beer Festival. Dark body brown with tan head. Aroma is some coffee and chocolate. Taste is slightly sour with some roasted malts and cocoa. Aftertaste is more sweet than bitter.
3.5 Draught @ Wishbeer. Dark brown with reddish tint, smallish foamy beige head, very faint mocha aroma, low carbonation, lightly sweet mocha taste with a hint of cherry, somewhat thick body, medium bitter mocha finish. Nicely smooth but more like a milk stout than a porter.
2.9 Bottle. Mainly chocolate and coffee, light roastiness and herbal bitterness in finish. Nice, simple and drinkable.
3.2 Not much aroma. Dark brown color with modest head. Very balanced taste with no ingredient standing out.
3.5 Dark brown, very cream head, nice looks. Refined roasty and coffee aroma, herbal hop. Quite smoothed out, pleasant. Taste is nice but I do feel it’s a bit heavy on the stomach. (33cl bottle from Saveur Bière)
3.0 Bottle @ Party Source / Bellevue KY --- bottled 12/19/14 --- Aroma of malt and coffee. Opaque black-brown color (like Coke), off-white head that drops to a cover, stripes of lace. Taste is malt that adds coffee and light chocolate as it moves through light carbonation to a finish that turns chalky and bitter. Starts well, and ends less well. Maybe past the "best by" date. Not a re-do here.
3.1 Package date 05 10 15. Musta väri, iso tuuhea viipyvä vaahto. Katkeran kuiva puuroinen (ruis, kaura, ohra??) tuoksu, , suutuntuma hapan, samettinen, savujuustoisa, mieto.
3.4 Beermarket.hu Tasting session @ Budapest. Aroma: good malts with coffee and chocolate. Taste: a little watery, caramel, coffee.
3.3 Tap at Craft Beer Base Bud in Osaka, JP. Murky brown pour with good foam and lace. Nose is muted, low coconut. Flavor of dusty cocoa powder, fairly dry, sharp roasted malt, fairly robust. Clean, neutral end. Simple, no major flaws.
3.6 [8056-20160130] 330mL bottle. Toasted grains and wet sweet balloon aroma. Dark rich brown body with a quick foamy off-white head. Sweet roasted grains flavour has a long aftertaste. Full body. Good. (7/3/7/4/15) 3.6 (c/o Radek Kliber)
3.5 Bottle. Pours a deep brown/ cola colour, with a thin off white head. Nose is sweet, roasts malt, caramel. Tastes sweet, a little roasty, touch bitter, chocolate, a little chalky on the tongue. Easy drinking.
3.0 Very old bottle, 2-3 years? From Leighton. Pours a thin black, tan grey head. Aroma is caramel, roasted malt, raw veggies, dates, prune, chocolate. Flavor is light silky sweet malt and rich fruits, caramel.
3.6 Bottle. Pours near black with a low creamy tan head, decent lacing. A light milk coffee aroma, gentle chocolate and light caramel. Smooth dark malt flavour, chocolate sweetness, a tinge of coffee. Really easy drinking, a creamy texture, coats the tongue, light-medium body, low bitterness. A beer that’s so smooth and not assertive that it glides by, nice gentle flavour, easy to down a few in one session.
3.7 Bottle at Craft Bier Fest Linz: Almost black color, brownish creamy head. Malty aroma, caramel, roastiness, toffee and note of nuts. Flavor is also malty, medium bodied, notes of roasted malt, toffee, caramel, hints of oak, cacao powder and dark chocolate. Tasty, good.
3.4 Bottle. Dark brown body with tan head. Aroma is some coffee and chocolate.Taste is slightly sour with some roasted malts and cocoa. Aftertaste is more sweet than bitter.
3.2 Bottle from Tony. Pours a clearish deep brown. Coffee, milk chocolate, red fruits....perhaps too fruity.. Thin beer, low carb, easy drinking.
3.2 Pours black with quickly going beige head. Aroma is raisin, cocoa, milk, coconut oil, mild toasted white bread, tofu. Taste is light, watery, some sweet cocoa notes, light medium roasted coffee, some fruit sourness, a bit crispy white bread. Little bit burnt after. A bit disappointment of such light taste, otherwise very easy to drink.
3.4 11.2 oz bottle from Party Source. Pours dark brown to black in color with a small beige head. The aroma and flavor have roasted malt, dark chocolate with a slight powdery character, mild coffee notes, I get hints of dark fruit, a bit thin on the palate, ok, but not something I would revisit.
3.4 330ml bottle. Pours a clear, dark red brown with a small, creamy, long lasting, beige head that laces. Sweet aroma of chocolate malt, roasted malt and caramel. Sweet flavour of chocolate malt, roasted malt and licorice with a bitter coffee finish. Medium body with an oily texture and soft carbonation.
3.4 2016-01-30. Black body with a small foamy beige head. 3+ Aroma is mild, lightly earthy, muted roast. Flavour is similar, sort of earthy cocoa roast. Very lightly tangy undertones. Average plus bodied palate, soft carbonation. 3+ Modest overall, but enjoyable. 7/3-4/7/3/14-15 Bottle shared by Radek.
3.5 Where and how: b. 330 ml, tasting Aroma: chocolate malt with mild roast to it, nicely rounded, weighted aroma. Faint smoke on edges. Appearance : Top: mid-sized, lasting beige cap Base: dark brown Palate : drinkable, refreshing, mid bodied. Taste: hmm, reminded me a bit of Schwartz beers. Some dry roast, ash, hinted with chocolate. other notes neat, nice creation.
3.3 from Erzbierschof - black beer with no head retention; aroma of black cherries and licorice; low carbonation, quite full-bodied, some bitterness; long chocolaty finish with more notes of black cherries and hints of vanilla
2.8 Pours dark brown with an unusual white sediment. Thin white head. Big chocolate aroma with hints of coffee. Flavor is like malted chocolate balls. thin body with a creamy texture. Heavy carbonation. Not a fan.
2.5 Tap @ Valencia on Tap. Bijna zwarte kleur. Fijne crêmige kraag. Ruikt naar chocolade melk. Smaakt vooral waterig, granig. Weinig nasmaak.
3.3 (Baird Kurofune Porter) Bottle 330 ml at home, served into a big shaker, ABV 6% Dark brown colour on the body, with a small and thin beige head on top. Low retention. Aroma of cofee, milky chocolate, toasted malts. Taste also of milky chocolate, some toasted malts, hints of coffee on the finish, basically follows the aroma but then weaker. Thin body, soft carbonation. Decent but nothing it’ll stay on your memory for long.
