Ballast Point Sculpin IPA

Ballast Point Sculpin IPA

San Diego IPA
The Sculpin IPA is a testament to our humble beginnings as Home Brew Mart. Founded in 1992, the Mart continues to be a catalyst for the San Diego brewing scene, setting the trend for handcrafted ales. Inspired by our customers, employees and brewers, the Sculpin IPA is bright with aromas of apricot, peach, mango and lemon. Its lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. This delicious Ballast Point Ale took a Bronze Medal at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival in the Pro Am category. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the most tasty. Something that has a sting but tastes great, sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

3.8 Can. Hoppy aroma and taste, citrus fruit, resin, medium bitter. Medium body, hoppy resiny bitter finish. Ok.
3.7 Early rating from Beer Buddy app
4.3 Orange/honey coloured slightly hazy body. Citrus and pine on nose, mangos and oranges! Tastes of citrus throughout, pine and lemon. Malt is faint but it's still there. The sweetness comes forward with each sip. Hops last very long on the palate. I'd recommend this to anyone. Great beer
3.9 Cask at GBBF, Earl’s Court on 05/08/2011. A really good beer. Some sweeter, dried fruits on the nose, which mix well with danker hop notes. Initial malty and fruity flavours give way to rising bitterness in the linger.
4.2 Taken from a 40° F 'fridge and allowed to stand for a few minutes before pouring from the 12 oz can into a 20 oz Belgian tulip glass. Crystal clear golden amber, moderately effervescent, capped by a tall, white head with a slightly yellow tint. The head exhibits descent retention and nice lacing. Aroma is not too strong, but strong enough to pick up the inviting citrus rind and grapefruit. As the beer warms, I also pick up more tropical fruit aromas, pineapple, others - apricot perhaps? The citrus rind hits first in the flavor, along with the grapefruit. It transitions in the middle to a slightly sweet malty / bready flavor before resuming the rind bitterness in the finish. The aftertaste leaves a pleasant bitterness on the tongue. As with the aroma, more complexity to the flavor emerges as the beer warms, and in addition to the tropical fruits, the underlying body becomes a bit sweeter. But, the bitter aftertaste remains throughout. The feel is moderate for the style, with a bit of smoothness to go with the bitter. Overall, an excellent IPA, and better balanced with a more complex flavor profile than I was expecting.
3.6 A: dark Golden with creamy white head S: I smell dark fruit, like date M: medium to heavy on mouth T: more bitter than I expected. Good beer
4.5 One of my favs! Hoppy & tasty!
4.1 Svag doft. Tropisk. Citrus. Grape. Tydlig beska med lite alkohol malt. efter. Fräsch.
4.0 355 ml Can. Pour slightly hazy, beautiful orange with slightly less than average whitehead. Aroma apricot, grapefruit, citrus. Taste is sweet blend of apricot, peach, malts kicks. Then bitterness citrus comes in with grapefruit, lemon drop. Aftertaste is long piney, grassy
3.9 From notes, rated @ 2018-1-23 How: bottle, a bit chilled. Head: two finger, white. Colour: golden, a bit hazy. Aroma: tropical fruits, pine, citrus fruits. Taste: thin body, medium carbonation, quite bitter, tropical fruits, grapefruit, bread, pine, rich. Long hoppy aftertaste.
4.0 Grapefruit, hoppy.
5.0 Favorite beer
3.2 Pours a straw colour with thin white coloured head. The aroma is of freshly cut grass and the taste is very strongly of pine resin which extremely long-lasting on the palate. Overall a reasonably good quality beer.
3.8 Kirkkaan kuparinen lasissa korkeahkolla vaahdolla.
4.3 Clear amber with a big white head that gives way to lacing. Aroma full of peaches and tropical fruit. Taste a wonderful hop explosion, peaches, mango, apricot, chewy resin, deliciously bitter. Nice soft mouthfeel. Classic.
4.5 DATE: December 29, 2019... OCCASION: two days from The Rise of Skywalker, we continue preparing with Return of the Jedi... GLASSWARE: Maudite snifter... the very picture of the genre: a golden amber body, busy as a city with its active effervescence, building a finger's worth of thick clumps of snow white head... this sits nobly and staunchly for the duration of the drink... lemon, grapefruit and mango build a tropical profile, with pineapple and aromatic flowers creating an inviting allure... its secondary scents include sweet bread malts and light peppery spiciness... its body is hearty, smooth and agreeable... at 7% ABV, it finds the sweet spot between drinkable and weighty, drawing heavily on the back end while biting at the teeth with a robust presence... the crunch and chewiness requisite to an IPA is also on full display here--again, if an alien asked what a good west coast IPA was, this is what you would hand it... pineapple, lemon, mango, and citrus fruits collide in a crunchy, resinous drip... strong presence of toasted malts make this a balanced affair--or as balanced as this hop-heavy ale could be... the pepper makes this a bit more nuanced as well... considering its weight and flavor, this could be an every night beer... planning for a gluten-free January, this was one I found hard to believe that I had not sipped it for posterity here.... thanks to Dave and Jen, another great one crossed off the list...
4.4 첫 상큼함에서 쓴맛으로 변하는게 맛있다
4.2 Amber color after poured. Medium to large head. A good amount of aroma. A really good balance of the flavor, a little bit of sweetness at first. Full in the mouth, not dry finished. Really good IPA.
4.5 From the end of corporate hell event. Using precise language, this beer is incredible.
3.8 ON tap at Velocity Wings, Sterling VA. Golden in colour, with a tight, white, head. Tangerine and pineapple fruit citrus hops, some biscuity malts, a hint of pine and dry finish. Very good.
3.8 On tap. Nice, though subtle, tropical/peachy hops, with lots of piney hop resin. Chewy malt, pretty bitter finish. Probably the best thing I'll find on tap in a Vegas casino.
3.9 Candy notes, lengthy bitterness, alcohol dominant
3.9 A vary nice full body ipa with a mouth full of hops. a nice mixture of fruit as it goes down def a go to ipa when enjoying a good meal
3.8 Certainly one of the best basic IPAs on the market. Full bodied, nice citrus, honey and hoppy goodness. Very well balanced and easy to drink. Can never stop at 1!
4.4 Love it, old fashioned US style, really resinous, pretty strong lingering bitterness. Like the grapefruit one better though.
5.0 After a long day from NJ to SA. I am drinking ballast point sculpin ipa in the Irish sports bar next to my apartment. Gorgeous bartender. I love it. The project may be tough from now on. Forgot it. Enjoy tonight. The end of my first week business trip. By the way, it’s mid autumn festival but I don’t get a chance to take mooncake. What a pity.
3.4 Надо ещё пробовать не разобрал
3.8 Fyllig smak, tydlig beska. Väl kolsyrad, härligt skum!
3.0 Lite tråkig. Smakar som en alldaglig IPA
