Barons Black Wattle Original Ale (-2011)

Barons Black Wattle Original Ale (-2011)

Brewed for Barons Brewing by AIB
http://www.baronsbrewing.com

The first beer released is the Wattle Seed Ale, which starts with a blend of Australian and European malts, creating a rich flavour base of caramel with a hint of chocolate. The smooth malt flavours are lightly hopped and then infused with roasted Wattle Seed, bringing a unique and authentic Australian flavour to this fine red ale. The result is an outstanding ale that boasts a smooth taste profile balancing its robust character, an ultimately rewarding yet distinctive beer. Native Range. Formerly Barons Black Wattle Superior Wattle Seed Ale.

3.0 Bottle pours deep amber brown with a thin khaki head. Aroma is definately malt driven with caramel, toast, almonds, and hazelnuts. Flavor shows the same, with another one of those hard to place berry scents. I can only assume that it’s coming from the wattle seed, but I can’t say for sure as I’ve never come across wattle seed anywhere else. Overall body is light to moderate. Starts lightly sweet and finishes dry with almost no real bitterness in sight. Maybe i’m just lupulin saturated.
3.3 You’ll swear this is a lager with the fruity smooth taste that is provided in this old copper nearly the same color as the bottle brown pour. Thin head. n Light nose of ripe plums. light to medium body finishes fast. not a horrible way to end a wet squishy day in the hop yard.
3.0 The beer poured a hazed amber color with a beige head. Toasted malt with caramel make up the aroma and the flavor. Sweet aroma and flavor. Light bodied with a dry finish.
3.1 Bottle; poured a deep caramel-amber color with a pretty small head. Aroma of caramel, very ripe fruit, lightly toasted bread, with some earth. Flavor had something unique to it, I guess from the seed. Still it was rather a mundane beer that had some caramel maltiness, but nothing great in terms of flavor. That being said, unoffensive and a decent sessional.
3.1 Lots of malt in this beer. Some bread dough. Sweet with grain. A grittiness with some carob. Amber color. Pretty solid session beer, especially for $.79.
3.8 Bottle 330ml. Genuine flavour. Starts with a great aroma, nutty and grainy. Taste is sweet, with light bitterness, and average duration. Palate is velvety, with light-to-medium body. Brown colour, with a frothy white head.
3.4 From an old rating note: 12oz bottle. Strong caramel malt aroma. Amber-brown pour. Nutty, malty, earthy and caramel in the taste. Smooth palate.
2.6 Bottle:   Burnt caramel, quite translucent, no head, no lacing, this one appears as if its still.   Spicy nose, some honey, a little cereal and mash.   Blech, another average brew from Barons.   Definitely on the malty side, minor sweetness, cereal, aformentioned honey.   Flat on the tongue, otherwise moderate body, albeit leaning towards the thin side.   Sweetness lingers, some honey, and again with the cereal.   Very mealy beers they make.   What is Wattle Seed anyway?   Didn’t seem to make for all that interesting of a beer.   Needs some hops to balance it out.   Ugh...
3.2 Bottle: Dark amber colour with small head, has a caramel chocolaty aroma, malty flavour hint of hazelnut ,smooth ,medium slightly bitter finish. Very nice.
3.1 The look is amber in color, clear, and has an off white head. The smell is caramel, malts, grains, floral, and very bready. The taste is a lot of bread, malts, and caramel. Better than I thought.
3.5 Polished brown ale with a thin, quickly dissolving white head. Spicy nose; Deep and somewhat complex flavor. I’m not sure what a wattle seed is, but the flavor is complex and pretty yummy. It’s not my favorite style of beer but it’s entirely drinkable.
3.2 Bottle. A nutty red-brown, small beige head. Cereal malts, nuts and seed nose. Robust caramel and dull chocolate taste with interesting earthy nutty notes, presumably from the wattle. I was expecting either not to taste the exotic ingredient or for it to be some hideous novelty piece of Australiana - it’s a pleasant surprise to find it’s neither.
3.3 Bottle - Reddish, clear, Thin beige head. Roasted malt aroma and flavour with caramel, dark fruit, smoke and a bit woody/nuttiness (perhaps from the Acacia) . Maybe a hint of alcohol coming through. Smooth, full bodied, with medium carbonation.
2.9 17th August 2008. Clear brown beer. Malty nose. Dry palate. Vague hints of fruit and nuts. Good but was hoping for more.
2.7 Bottle. Pours with a small white head over a clear nut brown body. A light cookie malt aroma. Alcoholic/solvent-caramel biscuit taste with a background of subtle bitterness. Quite light bodied and softly carbonated. Different.
3.5 Bottle. Pours orange/copper, with an off white head. Aroma is a little odd...malt, nuts, and I guess, wattle. Flavor is malt, spices, and nuts. Medium body. Decent.
3.3 330ml bottle, 5.8% ABV (labelled "Black Wattle Original Ale"). Pours dark orangey-brown with a medium tan head that provides a poor lace. Malt-driven aromas of nutty roasted caramel and cafe mocha. Quite sweet on the tongue with burnt brown sugar and nuts being the predominant flavours. A hint of cherries in there somewhere. Velvety smooth mouthfeel with a medium to full body but not rich and filling. Nice drop.
2.8 Bottle. Pours reddish amber with a thin white head. Aroma is very malty with caramel and toffee notes. Flavor is sweet and grainy with a woody finish.
3.2 Pours a coppery red with a small dissipating head. Aroma is similar to that of a dark ale, with toasted grains and a certain creamy nutty note, but it’s too faint. Nice though. Similar dark malt flavours, with lingering nutty notes, a slight peppery hint and a mild earthy bitter finish. Good creamy carbonation, but slightly too high. Interesting, but needs to be bolder!
3.3 330 ml bottle from a trade with jimmay. pours mahogany with a tan head. aroma of rich toffee and caramel malts. flavours are similarily malty with a touch of weirdness (waddle seed?) the body is thin and a little watery. it hide the 5.8% really well though. thx for the bottle drew!
3.3 Bottle. Poured a darker amber with a creamy tan head that settled out quickly. Aromas of milk chocolate, roast, and light alcohol. The flavor found milk chocolate and caramel. Medium to full body and smooth.
3.5 330 ml bottle. Pours dark brown, with a tinge of red, with a nice capuccino-like off-white head. Aroma and flavour are sweet malty, mildy hopped, with interesting ( I guess wattle) scent. Nice.
4.0 Good looking dark beer with thick brown head. Very smooth, tastes pretty good.
3.3 Bottle 330 ml Appearance: amber red look with medium light creamy tanned top Nose: brown malt based with some hop character followed by amber caramel feel. Hint of wood end others elements. 7- Flavor/Palate : dark dry roast , ash black malt with softer sweeter back up. Toasty dry feel. Drinkable and refreshing. Hint of hickory. Good brew.
3.3 Copper beer with an amber tint. No real head to speak of. Some sediment floating around in there. Blended aroma of caramel, grains and hops. Sour tint in the aroma that is nearly offensive. Flavor not as strong as the aroma. Light caramel and toffee, malts and hints of floral and citrus flavors as well. Well blended with none of the "sourness" in the aroma. Smooth and medium bodied, no real carbonation to speak of but the beer does not come across as flat. A nice refreshing beer that hits a good middle road between too light and too heavy.
3.1 bottle, pours light brown, thin tan head. Aroma is strange, slightly rye, kindof wheaty. Flavor is mellow, with malty body, some carmel and a nice toasty yeast and bread finish. I could drink this all day.
4.4 Has a little bit of a toffee aroma. This is quite tsty; some light carmel and toffee and a little mocha coffee as well. Very nice. An excellent finish.
3.5 Bottle. Pours deep brown with thin off-white head. Aroma has mild chocolate, mild sweetness, mild burnt caramel. Flavor is light caramel, mild roastiness, overall spicy with slight herbal, fruity taste throughout. Lingering herbal flavors and very light bitterness in the finish. I liked it very much.
1.6 The appearance is glassy brownish red, like mahogany or cherry. Two big puffyfingers of head. Not bad-looking at all. The aroma of cooked vegetables with the underbelly of an ale. Cigarette ashes. Bad. Sweet English-style ale flavor. Brown sugar. English ale yeast. Some toffee and molasses. Like a sweeter version of Bass, but with broiled broccoli. The feel is a typical chewy ale. The beer is overall not a very good beer. Wattle seeds aren’t great. Has potential but there is something foul and nasty in it.
3.4 Bottle - deep amber colour, with a frothy magnolia head. Chocolate and toffee flavours up front, with a roast malt finish. Nicely full bodied. The first Barons beer I had was their lager and did not like it, this has completely redeemed them in my eyes and I will be trying more of theor beers!
