3.9Draft at The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours pale hazy gold with a slight white head. Light sour aroma. Med minus body. Flavor is definitely tart/sour. Lemony tart/sour. Finishes with a residue of sweat sox. Surely fits the style.
3.3The initially healthy white froth promptly recedes to nothingness, leaving a typical hazy golden hue of champaingy effervescence somehow dying before culminating into a white tower. The nose is intensely perfumey for a beer with such a small built. The often times found in berliner weissbiers celery salt notes are there, plunging into a lemon universe where citric acid gives some room to acidity of a lactic nature, but of the rough sort. Pungent, extremely dry, almost astringent, it dries the palate out completely, depositing nature yogurt and fresh grass allusions into the mind and backing it up with the leanest of all mouthfeels. Vigorous tight bubbled effervescense. A lemonade of the complex and fairly rough sort, for acidity lovers, but no acetic allusions that I could grasp, so it’s not really harsh, but certainly intense and obviously surprisingly phenolic for a berliner, medicinal hints showing their nose behind the citrus showdown. I do appreciate its originality, but I have trouble throwing out the greatest scores at a light beer that I don’t find very drinkable.
2.2Pours a very hazy grapefruit color. The aroma is that of a standard sour with a lot in the nose. The taste hits you fast as a very sour beer. Not my favorite, and hard to differentiate between any other sours I have had.
(Rating #4578)
3.8Tapnat Gingerman. Pours hazy light straw color. Nose of spicy yeasty citrus. Tastes of lemon, grass, Brett, coriander, and ginger. Slightly sour and quite refreshing and nice.
3.6On tap at Meridian Pint, DC. Pours a clear pale yellow with a thin white head. Mild banana nose. Tart lemon and apple with a crisp finish.
3.9Pours clear straw yellow. Slight sour aroma. Flavor is a nice fruity sour funk. Light and refreshing. Amazing.
3.6Bottle: Poured a hazy pale yellow ale with a large pure white bubbly head with strong carbonation but not much retention or lacing. Aroma of funky barnyard notes and sour notes are more dominant then expected. Taste is a complex mix between loads of Brett with some tart and sour notes with a dry finish. Body is about average with strong carbonation. Interesting though maybe a tad too sour to be an everyday type of beer.
4.1Draft. Cloudy straw yellow. Nose is lemon juice, white grape juice, funk. Taste is sour lemon, Brett, fresh water, and light grains. Really crisp and easy drinking.
3.6Bottle (330 ml) 2011. Traded by SlovakSniper, thanks Patrick! Hazy and "milky" pale yellow with a medium quickly diminishing white head and no lacing. Aroma of brettanomyces, wheat, hints of fruits and slight herbal/vegetable notes. Taste is of brettanomyces, wheat sourness, fruits and slight citrus. Mouthfeel is slightly dry. Fizzy. Very good brett beer. A bit thin, but it’s expected from a 3% abv beer. Extremely refreshing and drinkable. I would drink this on a regular basis if it was easily available here.
4.1Stubby 11.2oz bottle into a tulip glass. Kept the sediment in the glass until the second pour.
A - Hazy light yellow/white body. Looks like peach juice. A massive white head forms and instantly fizzles away like a soda. Leaves behind no bubbles or head at all. Lots of rising carbonation.
S - Funky in the best way possible. Huge notes of brettanomyces. Dirty socks, wet and moldy hay, lemons, wheat, and a touch of oxidation. No idea how old this is (bottle is dusty) but this aroma is frickin intense!
T - Wet hay, lemon juice, wheat, and a touch of oxidized wet cardboard. Liquid funk with a nice mouth puckering sourness. The finish is very dry and spritzy, very seltzer like with lingering lactic acid.
O - Probably the best commercial berliner I’ve tried. Since the brett was so prominent I’m pretty sure this has a bit of age on it. Not as drinkable as others of the style though due to the intense sourness.
4.0This poured a hazy straw yellow color with a fluffy white head. Aroma was of lemon juice, brett, spicey yeast, and very light funk. Flavor was fairly tart, definitely the most sour berliner i’ve had, again lemon flavor, grainy, and lots of brett. Very nice stuff!
3.4On tap at Churchkey’s Night of the Living Ales event. This one poured a clear, plae color with a slightly yellow hue - kind of reminds me of the palest of pale lagers. Aroma was slightly sour, touch of medicinal notes, sour apples. Taste was mild tart funk, with some balanced sweetness. Perhaps a little thin, but hard to really expect otherwise with the ABV being only 3.0%. Very drinkable.
3.7Draft at The Monk’s Kettle in San Francisco. Pours incredibly light straw gold, with a slightly greenish tint. Slightly hazy with a white head. Nose of green apples, lemon, brett, and taste is dry, tart, and slightly funky. Really good, but expensive as shit.
Also, what is that rating from SlovakSniper alll about? Awesome.
3.6330ml bottle, slightly hazy pale white hue, with a small bubbly white head, mild bretty, funky yeastiness nose, with some light lactic, lemony sour, wheat malt notes, and with some faint barnyard, sour plain yogurt milkyness accent in the aroma follows through on a light-bodied palate with a very dry acidic lemon juice, sour green apple, lactic, bretty yeasty, tartness character, with a rhubarb, grapefruit, wheat malt, bread doughy, milky sourness backbone, leading towards a citric, zesty lemony, acidic, sourness finish.
4.1Drank 3 glasses of this at snallygaster, incredible flavor give the super low alcohol. it;s bone dry, earthy, funky, and tart from the brett. Great on a hot day and super sessionable.
3.3The pour reveals a hazy yellow color with a thin white head that rapidly diminishes to almost nothing. Nice aroma of lactic sourness, brett, lemon and wheat. The flavor is very intense, the brett and lactic sourness are in your face, there’s also lemon and wheat. The body is light and oily, but the carbonation is very aggressive, almost fizzy. Their regular berliner weisse is a work of art and adding brett to it seems like a good idea, but the result is a bit of a mess.
3.7Sample at Snallygaster DC event on October 13th, 2012. Really tasty berliner weisse, even though it’s so low in alcohol which is different to me. Brett adds a nice funk on top of the slightly sour beer.
3.8330ml bottle from IPB.
Appearance : Clear pale yellow with big head that is short lived. No lacing.
Aroma : Citrusy tartness with light wheat and light funk. Some fruity notes that might come from the brett.
Taste : Nice citrusy tartnes with mellow wheat notes. Very light funk. Tart finish, rather acidic as well. Light fruity notes. Some wheat on the late finish.
Palate : Quite fizzy But nothing more than what I think is usual for this style. Nothing aggressive.
Overall : Fairly good overall. The brett is a bit subdued in my opinion. I expected quite a bit more brett character. Seems a bit more complex than the regular Berliner Weisse and a bit less grainy but not as clean. Very drinkable and refreshing. Overall a bit better than the regular version.
3.2My Bottom Line :
Brett and lactobacillus combine to produce sour lemons in this gum-drying, fiercely effervescent Berliner Weisse.
Further Personal Perceptions :
-A thin slice of foam slowly sunk into the hazy pale straw.
-This was a loud beer, folks. Crackling and popping, the carbonation was fizzing away at an alarming rate.
-The mouthfeel is not polished; carbonation feels detached from the flavor profile.
-This is not nearly as drinkable as their ’regular’ Berliner Weisse.
-This is flavorful and complex, but poor bottle conditioning and mouthfeel undermine what could have been a great brew.
Bottle.
3.6(Draught at Ebenezer’s Pub) clear, effervescent body that is light gold in color and a foamy white head. Nose is lemon, a bit funky (the menu said VERY funky but I’m not sure I agree), wheat, cream, and a bit of metal. Taste is very tart, lemony, sawdust, chewable vitamins, seltzer water, carbonation like soda water, lemon-lime finish.
4.1On tap. Clear pale yellow with almost no head. Strong raspberry lambic aroma with citric notes and a Brett green apple sourness. Very bright palate. Lemon and green apple flavors dominate with a dry framboise finish. Very good.
3.4Draft. Light clear golden, almost like a cider, no head. Sharp bite too the nose, hint of lemon.in the mouth much more like a sour than a weise, with prominent almost cider vinegar flavor.none of the usual wheat citrus or banana flavours. Mild finish, don’t really notice hops.a bit one dimensional, but curiously enjoyable if you like sour beers.
3.9November 18, 2011 - on draught at Blue Monk. (#19 on the big board). Hazy very pale yellow with a largeish white creamy/fizzy diminishing head - really looks the part. Love that aroma - redolent of dessicated wildflowers, overtopped by dry lemon and lemon zest, vaguely sweet and fruity under it all - no alcohol to speak of; quite yeasty and spicy, but not particularly bretty/wild. Taste is up front with huge lemon, not lemon drops, LEMON - underlying it there is some wild funk, and dried floral bitterness, but it’s all tertiary to the sourness. A little flat on the tongue, quite acidic and dry, finishes with a real tingle - nice balance.
3.2bottle. Hazy pale yellow, huge fizzy head, quickly collapsing - looks like their normal Berliner Weisse. Sour aroma. Sour flavours throughout, overpowering everything else. Where their normal Berliner Weisse was able to deliver lovely flavours of tropical fruit, there’s only citrusy-yeasty sourness here. Nevertheless an inteersting example of the style.
4.4Bottle shared by TPatuto’s friend Tony...didn’t get his screen name, but he was a cool guy that shared an awesome beer - Pours hazy pale yellow with a thin white head. Nose is funky, cheesy, chalky, with real rustic graininess. Real dry and tart taste, but not vinegar tart. Cheese, mineral, sour wheat, lemon. Holy crap. Dry finish, with vinegar and Smarties. Well-carbonated and smooth. I would bathe in this.
4.0On draft at Ebenezer’s Pub. Pours a hazy pale yellow blonde color with a touch of a fizzy head. Aromas are sour peaches, lime, and a bit of funky basement... on the palate this beer really sings. I love berliner weisse beers but the addition of the brett really makes it more complex than your typical spritzy zesty berliner. The barnyard sourness and grassy bitterness brings this beer to a different level !
4.1Bottle shared by drabmuh. Thanks Matt!
The beer is hazy and yellow, with a sizable white head. The aroma is a bit funky, tart, citric, and altogether enticing. The beer is teeming with flavor, and at a mere 3% abv. Quite impressive. The feel is thin and watery on the palate, in a pleasant and refreshing way. The flavor also brings forth the tantalizing tart citrus and funky brettanomyces found in the aroma. This would be an ideal beer to have on a hot summer day. I wish I had a keg of it at home.
