2.8 Not a favorite. Nice darl pour. Aroma is muted anise. Taste is overly balanced to the botter.not for me.
4.0 Bottle from Beer store in Garland, TX. Pours a deep brown with a medium tan head. The aromas are dark fruit, caramel and potpourri. The mouthfeel is dry bitter and has a sticky head with a slightly heavy body. great nrew! Cheers!
3.2 Pours a dirty brown color with a small head . Nose is sweet with an even balance of malt and hops. Taste is more malty, sweet and light and drinks very easily. Finishes sweetly without any lingering notes. Quaff score 6 / 10
3.3 Pours an amber orange with a beige head and sweet, spicy aroma of fruits, caramel, and grapefruit. Taste is sweet, of fruits, caramel, brown sugar, grapefruit, and licorice with a smooth finish.
3.5 On draft at Fatheads N Olnstead OH. Pours deep reddish amber with an off white head. Sweet malty aroma. Flavors of biscuit with a string hop presence. Nice. Earlier Rating: 2/7/2013 Total Score: 3.5 From a 12 oz bottle enjoyed in Key Largo FL. Pours a murky brown with a massive, big bubble ecru head. Hops dominate the nose. Flavors are more varied with some toasted malt and toffee along with a quite bitter hopiness. Seems somehow a bit off balance, although it is a decent beer.
Note: 7 /10
3.4 Bottle. Murky brown pour, Spiced mince pie nose with c-hops. Molasses prominent in the flavor, but the hops come on too strong. Why did I pay seven bucks for a 12oz bottle of this?
3.3 Poured a brown with reddish tint to the edges, the head was frothy and beige. Aroma was nice cascade hops and subtle malts. Nice blend of malts, hints of chocolate and fresh hops that linger through the finish.
3.6 A bit pricey for what you get, but a typical strong ale here that I had to go to CO to get.
3.1 Changing aroma and dark brown appearance with a complex taste of maple and spice with a lingering mouthfeel.
3.7 2013.03.05 - Bear Republic / Fat Head’s / Stone TBA - 12oz bottle in pint glass. Vintage 2012. Aroma: ver nice, hops tempered by something... a bit spicy a bit malty. Appearance: Pours around 19-20 on SRM scale. Deep caramel brown. Ridiculous head, almost half the glass. Sticky and foamy head/carbonation. Taste: Hops clearly there but very well balanced with sweet spiciness. Caramel taste and molasses. Not as roasty or chocolatey as most American Brown Ales. Not as hoppy as, say, Brekles Brown. Nice. Palate/Mouthfeel: medium Aroma 7/10, Appearance 4/5, Taste 8/10, Palate 3/5, Overall 15/20
3.9 Bottle. Pours a cloudy dark brown with a huge tan head on it. Hoppy nose with a hint of harshness in there. Malty taste with some good bitterness in there. Not bad.
3.4 12oz (STONE) bottle. Vintage 2012. Bottled 02/12. Pours light brown color, light khaki colored fizz. Aroma of brown sugary malts. Toasted oat cereal scent. Light chocolate and even some earth in the nose. Dry flavor. Some toasted malts along with some earthy hops. Tastes of the woods. Smells better than the dry flavor of the medium bodied beer. Its a tick... (3618)
3.3 Bottle from Buckeye Beer Engine. Murky brownish pour with a larger foamy head. Sweet hops dominate the aroma. Taste is hops with a hint of dark fruit. Moderate palate.
2.9 Bottle pour a murky brown. Nose of some hop, caramel, and toffee. Initial candy sweet followed by a vague vegetal, then strong bitterness. Not blending well to by palate.
3.4 Poured from a 12 oz bottle, it’s a deep, cloudy orange color. A nice 1 inch tan, creamy head forms. Aroma is distinctly hops, caramel and citrus. Moderate lacing, but not as sticky as I would have suspected. Medium body and medium-soft carbonation. Nice, but not memorable. That said, I’d welcome another glass any time.
3.6 Bottle. Hazy dark brown liquid with small light tan head. Aroma of raw sugar, pine, spices, biscuit, toffee, dark fruit and bread. Taste is light sweet and medium bitter with notes of raw sugar, pine, biscuit and toffee. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Nice, though a bit boring.
3.5 In short: A well balanced bronze ale with a bit of many things. Good beer How: Bottle 12oz. Consumed a few weeks after purchase The look: Partially cloudy bronze body topped by a medium beige head that quickly dissipates to a persistent small layer of foam. Lots of lacings on the glass In long: Nose is relatively hoppy with a hefty dose of floral and fruity hops, also tobacco, mushrooms. Tate has a bit of many things, crusty bread, caramel, nutty notes, fruity notes, earthy notes, resinous leafy hops. Round, relatively smooth, well balanced. Easy to drink with many things going on but it didn’t totally win me over. This is a good beer, but it is a good beer that doesn’t stand out from the crowd, a well made dark ale that doesn’t really try anything. A good collaboration between three breweries and now I’m can’t help but obsess wondering if is it a coincidence that it is not a coincidence that these three breweries are not from different states? Logic is hard.
3.8 12 oz bottle from Mega Liquor 8, Alhambra, CA. Deep dark brown color. Big head, beige, long lasting, good lacing. Aroma’s: resinous hops, some caramel, molasses (reminiscent of rootbeer). Also a bit herbal/spicy retronasal. Flavor is medium bitter, with some roasted sweetness. Medium bodied. Finishes somewhat roasted and long lasting bitter. I’m usually not a big fan of browns but this was really nice.
3.3 Nose is decent, bitterness is still there. Cocoa-ey yet hoppy. Pretty decent beer considering its age.
3.5 Hoppy Brown Ale. No tricks here. Pours dark brown with a fluffy tan head. Aroma is complex but very well balanced; brown sugar, caramel, herbal, some citrus. Taste is similar and likewise very well balanced; a good amount of sweet maltiness juxtaposed against bright citrus hoppiness. Somewhat syrupy mouth feel, which was probably my least favorite characteristic of an otherwise very drinkable beer.
3.5 Bottle. Pours brown with khaki head. Aroma of hop and roasted malts. Taste is thin grassy hop and nuts.
4.3 Bottle from South Bay Liquor: Created a violent mushroom head of foam while a dark tea brown liquid filled the remainder of my glass. Aroma is bright with vibrant hops and a rich backbone of sweet sugary malts that bring out an aroma of molasses, caramel, and brown sugar. The flavor hangs in perfect balance with a strong malt profile that shares the spotlight with some citrus pine like hops that is probably due to the Bear Republic because their other beers taste similar to this. Deliciously amazing.
3.7 Bottle in Seattle. Last beer of my trip, and a good one at that. Great brown ale pour, foamy head. Sweet, medium green aroma of hops. Old School. Such a tasty sip, quality strong flavored ale. Some soft mint and freshness over dark/brown malt ale body. super tasty and well constructed, Sweet finish, some strong caramel along the way. Would drink this anytime if it was around; hopped up brown ale, right up my alley, I want more of this style!
3.8 Pours a hazy brown with a thick fluffy beige head that leaves awesome homebrew style lacing. Smells of pine, citrus and chocolate. Tastes of all the same things in the smell with added caramel flavor. And a strong hop bite for a brown ale. Mouthfeel is medium and creamy with great carbonation. Overall this was a great hoppy brown ale collaboration Stone, Fat Head, and Bear Republic wish I would have tried it fresher though.
3.0 12/1/12. 12oz bottle from Proof Bottle Shop. Mostly clear brown pour with a nice khaki head that sticks. Light green hop aroma with some chocolate and soy sauce and medicine. Light burnt caramel with some old hops and more soy and medicine. Meh.
3.4 12 oz bottle that’s been kicking around the fridge for awhile. I don’t remember where it was acquired. Pours a richer hazy brownish pour, darker and well hazed. Some coppery brown glow on the edges is dulled. Deeper with some pretty glow. A cakey tannish head atop dies to a good layer, laces pretty well as it settles to a healthy film. Aromas are grapefruit and orange rind, toasty and biscuity malts. Dryness, florals, and gentlew pine. Earthy and bready brown malts, some soil, toast, and carmelization. More hops, citrusy brunt a bit deadened with time. The fridge seems to have helped keep this going though. A bit of brown sugar, toasty and carmelized. Initial is soapy and hoppy, firm pine and florals, grapefruit and orange. A moderate bitterness approaches, florals and firm dryness. Quickly into a middle that sustains the hops but throws a bit of thickness, malt profile into the works. A touch hot, dry, and spicy. Some toffee, toast, biscuits. Caramel and crystal malts. Dry pine, almost and herbal hop character as we move into the backend. Touches of carmelization, brown sugar, and almost a medicinal feel. Dry and toasty, molasses and brown malts, earthy and carmelization is heavy, some sweetness,d toffee and toast. The brown sugar and molasses elements, though thinned and not necessarily sweet, it definitely leaves my mark. Aroma and front end start out nicely, but it loses me as it gets that element into a more focused role into the finish. Meh, ok.
4.2 Bottle. Medium brown with an exuberant beige head that resembled a soufflé and lasted forever. Aroma was intense pine hop character and rich underlying toffee. The burnt sugars really play strongly on the palate, and the malt sructure is dense, providing excellent support for the aggressive piney hops. Fantastic! I could drink Stone beers forever....
4.0 12 oz bottle from "Lifesource" in Salem $2.49 on sale Clear hazelnut brown coloured ale large thick frothy light tan head. Fine aromas of spicy/citic hops..pleasantly surprised. Some chocolate and nuts also Smooth, creamy dark chocolate and toffeeish malt tastes with a good bit of hop in the back which comes to the fore at the end. Nice really Great smooth yet thickish mouthfeel. Great beer ..even if it was on sale and out on a shelf not in the fridge.
