Beavertown Skull King

Beavertown Skull King

It all began in September, last year, when we invited our “Rainbow Project” collaborators and good friends, Naparbier, to come brew our first DIPA – “Bone King”. Super drinkable, high ABV beers are Naparbier’s bread and butter, but was something of learning experience for us, being the first time we used Dextrose in a brew (which increases sugar content and therefore ease of fermentation, along with decreasing fusel alcohol making for that cleaner, more IPA-er flavour you know and love!) Well that learning experience turned out to be an absolute treat, resulting in incredible feedback and not only our and Naparbier’s first (of many, hopefully) 100 rating on ratebeer.com, but also a feature in the top 50 beers of the 2014. Excellent news all round, except it was so limited, hen’s teeth were regularly mentioned…

We couldn’t simply let it lie, but simply repeating the collab recipe felt a little half hearted, so we have sampled, tweaked, sampled, then tweaked some more in order to bring you what we are confident is the best final product possible! This marks yet another milestone, as it will be the UK’s first canned DIPA too! As mentioned, the dextrose makes for a much cleaner taste profile, meaning you will hopefully be able to taste the vast complexities alongside how much care and attention has been put into this big, juicy, hoppy, aromatic, in your face double IPA.

3.8 At a tasting, many thanks, small quickly disappearing, bubbly head, cloudy quite intense yellow color, flower and onion aroma with some grapefruit in the back, strong onion flavor with lots of grapefruit behind, lingering medium grapefruit bitterness, with a lemony aftertaste. Very nice and enjoyable.
3.8 Can sample at a tasting at Yoav's place. Thanks Yoav. Hazy golden-yellow with white head. The aroma has lots of citrus (clementine, orange, lemon) and onion. Bitter flavor with lots of onion, citrus (lemon, orange), herbs, a bit alcoholic, malty. Medium to full-bodied. Very fresh.
4.5 Zeer mooi van kleur . Troebel geel met oranje schijn, fijne witte schuimkraag. Tropisch fruit, ananas, mango, passievrucht, beetje papaya. Vol, romig, creamy. Goeie bitter in de afdronk. Schitterende double ipa.
3.8 Lata de. @Zombier, Online . 22/01/2018 Color amarillo corona de espuma blanca, aromas resinosos, florales, sabor resisinos, final amargo y seco.
3.8 Kellemesen kortyolható, ízletes imperial IPA, mely érett őszibarack, aszalt sárgabarack, mangó és egyéb trópusi nyalánkságok jegyeit viseli magán mind aromák, mind ízjegyek tekintetében. Selymesen csúszik, itatja magát, a kerekded elemek az utóízben öltenek kissé élesebb, férfiasabb, éretlen gyümölcsös karakterisztikát, egy markáns kesernye súlyát cipelve a hátukon.
4.4 Hoppy and bites the tongue. Rich in flavour but a little bit brutalised by the haphazard application of the alcohol. A nice one off drink now and again.
3.9 hoppy aroma of grapefruit, papaya and melon peel. Taste is sweet grapefruit, peach liqueur, overripe apricot. Sweet liqueury finish. Very drinkable. Lacks some more bitterness and it is a bit too sweet for my taste. if they adjust these I would rate it 5.
3.3 15/20 big fresh taste, with a boozy aftertaste, medium bitterness. very good but prefer ipas juicier.
4.0 Can from JK Fine Foods. Beer looks hazy warm apricot gold with a fluffy slightly yellowed head. It simply beggars belief how nice this beer looks. Devine and I cannot wait. Aromas are incredible. Huge fruits. Orange, mango and pineapple. Amongst the fruits is a warming herbal quality. The taste also has lots of sweet citrus and yellow stone fruit. There’s also a little caramel and a fine grassy bittering edge. I fully expected a thick juicy body. Although it’s still full bodied it’s much lighter than I expected with a soft slickness and a gentle fizz. A lovely fruity double with a grassy bitter bite. Great.
3.4 330ml can. Hazy, deep golden colour with small, creamy, moderately lasting, minimally lacing white head. Chalky and tropical fruity, hoppy aroma, cardboard-disguised, underdeveloped hints of passion fruit and mango. Taste is dry, chalky, papery hoppy, restricted tropical fruitiness. No blackout, but quite a disappointment considering my hitherto well-grounded high expectations regarding Beavertown brews.
3.4 Can at Malý/Velký, Prague. Pours golden color, white head. Aroma of citrusy hops, lemon. Taste is bitter, lightly sweet, malty backbone, citrusy, grapefruit.
4.1 330 ml can from Stoneworks,Peterborough. Orange,cloudy,white head. 9.2%,canned 06/12/2017,bb 06/03/2018. Nose - peach,pineapple,mango,pine. Taste - citrus fruit and pine. Sweet. Light bitter aftertaste. Low carbonation,oily.
4.0 330ml can (9.2% 2017 version). Hazy golden with a medium white head. Tropical fruits and piney resin on the nose, citrus peel. Taste of tropical fruits, strong resin, mango, orange peel, subtle malt sweetness in the background, very bitter resinous finish, noticeable warming booze but doesn't hinder drinkability. Medium body and carbonation, smooth. A great DIPA.
4.1 Can from Salt Horse. Pours hazy gold, thin pale head. Huge dry hop aroma, pineapples and lemon. Taste is very dry, astringent. Loads of citrus initially, then some pine and mushroom, then another big dry cheek sucking finish. Sometimes you need a big dry hop monster with no big fruit hit or weird cheese and socks going on. This is great. Dry as hell, hoppy and boozy and excellent.
4.1 Hazy gold cat pee aroma that is somehow appealing. Florida pink grapefruit in taste with a raw sweetness to balance good stuff.
3.9 Tin, April 2016. I love it when a DIPA doesn’t taste of throat sweets and peach iced tea. God bless Beavertown. Alluring white grape, mouldering pineapple, tropical Starburst, lychee and guava Rubicon aroma squarely in the modern English camp. More grape, Rubicon, Darjeeling and lemon zest taste. There is malt but of the right kind and unobtrusive paleness. Soapy and floral without a trace of peppery heat. Green and stewed and subtly multicoloured. All about the hop. Bonus point purely for the can.
3.3 Draft. A hazy golden beer with a white head. The aroma has notes of fruits, hay, and malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of straw, fruits, and malt, leading to a bitter finish.
4.0 Keg Half Pint at BrewDog, Clerkenwell, London in Jan 2016 - Hazy Amber Gold in colour. Good off-white head. Good lacing. Very Fruity; tangy tropical and citrus fruits, peaches, grapefruit, mango, oranges. Very Hoppy; resinous piney hops, big assertive hop hit. Malty; bready malts, caramel. Dry throughout. Bitter very tropical and citrus fruity and resinous hoppy throughout. Very dry hoppy fruity finish. Enjoyed this a lot. Terrific fruity Impy IPA! (2016-01-30)
3.9 Backlog, ocena przepisana z untappd, w ramach uzupełniania profilu na ratebeer.
3.3 Can @Bir&Fud Bottega (Rome). Pours deep golden with a medium white head. Aroma is very hoppy, grapefruit, citrus and passionfruit, medium malt profile. Flavour is medium sweet with a strong bitter end, well balanced. Medium to high body, medium carbonation. Not my cup of tea.

3.7 Tap @ Local Pub, Athens-Greece. Color hazy orange with small white head. Aroma grapefruit, citrus. Taste fruity, crisp, citrus, grapefruit.
4.2 33cl can @ Bishop’s arms, Västerås. Poured golden color with a thick white head. Juicy, tropical fruity hoppy aroma. Inviting. Flavor has tropical fruits, malt, sweetness, warmth. Feels smooth. Huge drinkability considering the high abv. Great stuff! Did I say juicy?
4.7 Appearance: Hazy golden with white head. Aroma: Juicy, tropical fruits, pineapple, grapefruit and resin. Taste: Aromawise, tropical bomb, balanced.
4.0 From old notes. Medium carb with immediate long bitterness which lasts throughout. Spicy, juicy and clean yet controlled and def on point.
4.6 Loved this! Beavertown cant do wrong! Lots of tropial fruits going on in both flavour and aroma. Pine, mango, pineapple, grapefruit, pale stone fruits, papaya, passion fruit, tangerine, orange and so and so and so. Very complex, juicy and bitter.
4.2 Appearance: A blond light cloudy beer, with a small irregular white head, Not that long lasting and not that sticky. Aroma: lots of tropical fruits and bergamot.. Taste: sweet, tropical fruits( passion fruit, mango, pineapple.), grass and the best part of soft gentle mineral salty tone in the back, which makes it even better. medium body, average carbonation.
4.4 21/V/16 - 33cl can from Bierhalle Deconinck (Vichte) @ Erwin’s Ponton Tasting - BB: n/a (2016-607) Thanks to Erwin for not drinking it "on the road", and sharing with us instead! ;-) Bit cloudy blond beer, small irregular white head, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: lots of tropical fruits, pineapple. MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: very sweet, tropical fruits, passion fruit, mango, pineapple. Aftertaste: sweet, pineapple, citrus, grapefruit, passion fruit, soft bitterness (then again, this is our 4rth (d)ipa of the evening, so...) Man, this is lovely stuff.
3.9 Tropical fruits, citrus, golden/orange with a good white head quite persistant, light/medium body medium carbonation, taste of fruits and grass...this is really a king.
3.5 Poured from a can at Humle & Bier. Hazy, pale golden body. Filmy layer, minimal lacing. Sappy tropical fruity nose. Oranges and peaches to the taste buds. Lingering aftertaste of dried fruity bitterness. Hidden alcohol. Well bodied. Nice and refreshing (Verkstedet, Kulturhuset i Tromsø 28.05.2016).
