Beer Here Harwood Brown Porter

Beer Here Harwood Brown Porter

In 17th century Britain beer was the drink of the common man. Wine was for the wealthy,
tea was for the weak and water was usually quite poisonous. Men, women and children
drank beer morning, noon and night. The most popular type of beer was porter because of
its modest price and its nutritional value. One of the most popular porter brewers, and often
incorrectly credited with the invention of the beer, was Ralph Harwood. This beer is inspired
by the brown porter made at the time.
TASTING NOTES
Enters the glass with a deep mahogany with a small tan head. The nose quickly fills toffee and
sweet chocolate. Smooth in flavour and with a big mouth feel without significant bitterness from
the hops. Ends full, creamy and lush.
FOOD PAIRING
Should be paired with food as it could have been served at Harwoods time. A steak- and kidney
pie should work well or for the slightly more modern touch serve it with a porter house steak
smothered in a wild mushroom and oyster gravy.

3.5 On tap at Cardinal. Pours almost pitch black with a small tanned head. Aroma of weak roasted malts, chocolate and caramel. Taste is smooth, medium sweet roasted malts and chocolate, a pleasant beverage indeed.

4.2 Spændende øl. Fin smag, men en god snert af chokolade. Absolut værd at drikke
3.1 Pours near black with small tan head. Not a huge aroma but some dark chocolate, yeast and alcohol. The taste has all the above but tastes quite green and a little metallic. Light bodied and peppery. Solid but not spectacular.

3.7 Dark cola colored beer with a creamy head. Aroma is dark bready malts, smoke and roast, sweet syrupy tones, some citrusy hops. Taste is sweet dark malts, roast and bread, sweet ripe fruits, fruity hops. Nice! Smooth fullish mouthfeel and finish. Bitter in the end. I like!

4.2 Tap. Long-lasting ochre head. Murky dark brown. Thick lace. Strong herbs and dark syrup on aroma. Medium body. Strong, sweet and some bitterness, nice blend of tastes of liqourice, roasted malts, brown sugar. Would by even better with more bitterness, to my taste. -- rated with beerbasher/winphone
3.7 Cacao in the nose with roasted malts and chocolate nibs. Med body, moderately roasted malts with a bit of tobacco leaves. Dry cacao finish.
3.7 (Bottle @ VilleValla Pub, Linköping, Dec 19 2014) Pours nearly black, with a big bubbly medium tan head and lots of lace. Aroma has a core with lots of dark charred malts, a bit of coffee and a touch of dark chocolate, and a faint smoky/ashy character. Flavour has coffee, dry dark malts, unsweetened chocolate, and lots of burnt flavours. More char into the finish, slight grain. Pretty dry really. Lingering burnt notes in the aftertaste. Fairly light body for the style, with soft carbonation. This was a very heavily roasted/burnt porter for the style I thought, and overwhelmed the richness that may have been present in the malts. Not bad, not excellent.
3.6 Bottle, shared with friends at a Christmas party. Dark brown, quite hazy, beige head. Aroma of milk chocolate and brown bread, some molasses too. Malty palate, brown bread, chocolate, a bit of coffee too. Very tasty.
3.7 50cl bottle. Small beige head atop cola dark brown body. Aroma is moderately sweet, toffee, some milk chocolate, light cherry, caramel. Taste is moderately sweet, toffee/caramel/coffee, some milk chocolate, light earthy. Medium body, light stickiness.
3.9 Draught @ Hilpeä Hauki. Aroma has cocoa, licorice, some coffee and dark chocolate. Also hints of soy sauce. Flavour has salty licorice, herbal tones, semi-dark chocolate and hints of coffee. Finishes with mellow grapefruit and gooseberry bush tones. Nothing surprising, a solid IS. A bit too salty for me.
3.5 Deep brown of color with a foamy beige head. An aroma of sugar, toffee, weak metallic and weak coffee. A flavor of coffee, toffee, candy, chocolate, malty and some alcohol in the finish.
3.9 Bottle. Dark brown with a small brown head. Malty and fruity tones. malt, fruit, coffee and hops. Medium to full body witha nice balanced finish.
4.0 Sample at SBWF 2014. Malty smell with chocolate and dark malts. Similar taste with some roasted notes. Very nice.
3.6 Aroma: 6/10. Not bad, a nice bready, nutty aroma off the glass. A little more pungent hopping like a lager in the nose, but not repellant. Smells a little more hopped than most porters. Appearance: 4/5. Pours a dark caramel brown with a light-tan head, medium-thin, with nice lacing. Taste: 7/10. Nice balance here between the malts and the hops, with a nice toasty-sourness to the malt, and a medium caramel-cocoa-roasted finish. Some points off for the afterbite of the hops, it finishes with a bit of unpleasant bitterness. But. While actively drinking, this beer really displays an excellent harmony of the sweet-sour-bitter-savory blends going on. Palate: 4/5. Nice body, with a creamy head that likes to linger on the tongue past the swallow. Very astringent, but mostly in a good way; I’d have difficulty sessioning this though, it’s a little tongue-stripping after a while. That hoppy finish hanging out under the sides of the tongue is rather unfortunate though. Overall: 15/20. Probably won’t buy it again, but I’m glad it’s out there. With some tweaking of the recipe to keep that harmony but reduce that finishing bitterness, this could be a proud crown jewel from Beer Here! breweries.
3.8 On tap at Rovers. Very dark brown body with a weak dark beige head. Rather sweet chocolate, espresso blend with nice maltiness. Dry aftermouth. Good.
