3.8 Amber coloured and cleaer. Has a white head, mostly lasting. Heavy hoppy aroma, faint sweet and fruity. Flavor starts light sweet, finish heavy bitter. Dry, creamy texture.
3.5 Growler. Hazy amber with a dense, spotty, white head and some lacing. Aroma of citrus, pine, caramel and fruity yeast esters. Flavor is sweet and malty, caramel, bitter hops and light alcohol. Medium body with a long bitter finish. Good beer, drinks like an IIPA that is a bit on the sweet side.
3.5 Two fingers of head on a hazy, orange/straw colored body. The smell is lemon and barley. The taste has a strong alcohol flavor, moderate lemon and grapefruit bitterness with a malt backbone but not really showing up strong. The texture is smooth with moderate carbonation. A nice barleywine.
3.6 On draught at Lucky Labrador Barleywine and Big Beer Festival. 2011 vintage. Hazy golden color. Hoppy, but not as much as it could be. Sweet caramel and spice on finish.
3.7 Bottle from Beers of Europe, King’s Lynn Hazy amber color with generous compact head. Strong aroma of malt, crystal, perfumy, hoppy, a bit fruity, light anise. Smooth mouthfeel, full bodied; flavor of malt, caramel, light toffee, some crystal malt, and very strong bitterness, with quite some resins. Good but not exciting.
3.7 Bottle pours a hazy amber/red beer with a thin tan head. Scent is sweet with caramel and brad. Taste is sweet with spices, caramel, dark sugar and bread.
2.5 From 2010 bottle. Smells of sweet malt. Taste is a bit oxidized. Probably because of the way it was stored. Sort of a drain pour for me.
3.5 From Hophead, DK. Bottled, 101112. Amber with white head. Aroma of malt and alcohol. Flavour with caramel and fruit.
3.5 0.65l bottle from Craft Beer C.O. Oh this is a good looking one! Glowing dark, cloudy and amber-orange in the color with a medium sized heavy lacing beige dense top and a good amount of dark sediments in the bottle of the glass. It looks really nice this. On the nose it’s a classic barley winer with sweet sticky dark dried fruits like dates, figs and raisins. There is also something light nutty about this and it’s strong and malty sweet with a little hint of alcohol. In the taste it’s definitely not so sweet as I expected, but extreme nutty and quite alcohol strong. A bit raw would describe it nicely. It’s soft to average on the small prickling carbonation level, full-bodied with a thick oily to sticky mouthfeel. It’s almost a bit medicinal in the taste. Spicy in a strange way also. The aftertaste is quite warming and really nutty-bitter. Had hoped for a bit more to be honest. 17.10.2012
3.6 Bottle at home. Hazy dark amber with a small head. Aroma heavy malty (caramel) and hoppy (floral). Flavor medium sweet, heavy spicy and bitter, long lasting. Almost burning in your throat, long lasting feeling of pepper and alcohol. Almost full body, sirupy.
3.0 65 cl bottle @ home. Pours reddish brown amber with an off-white head that leaves some lacing. Aroma is sweet caramel malt, nuts, oranges, berries, and spices. Flavour is spicy, fruity, and with some sweet malt.
3.8 (Bottle) Pours hazy deep reddish brown with a creamy, sand coloured head. The aroma holds malty notes of burned cookies, dark caramel, milk chocolate and nuts/nutshell as the most notable. Hoppy notes of oranges, flowers and grass. Touch of fruits and light tart red berries. The flavour is light to medium sweet, medium to heavily bitter and light acidic with notes of well-structured malt and vibrant hops (maybe just a tad too bitter). The mouthfeel is soft, round, smooth and light astringent with a light to medium carbonation. Mega woodsy/grapefruity supper lingering finish. Medium to full bodied. Nice but waaaaaaay too much flavour and bitter hops.
3.6 Bottle courtesy of Marsiblursi. Pours cloudy reddish orange with a creamy offwhite head that leaves some thin sticky lacing on the glass. Smell is sweet and malty with burnt cookies, caramelized nuts, orange peal, golden syrup, sweet dark bread, butterscotch hard candy, freshly cut grass, vanilla fudge, resinous wood, green peas and moist soil. Taste is sweet, bitter and malty with caramel, pine, overripe lemons, freshly cut grass, sweet bread, milk chocolate, caramelized almonds, grapefruit rinds, resin, overripe lemons and hints of green peas. Mouthfeel is smooth, soft, sound, sticky aggressive bitter and medium to full bodied. Finish is slightly sweet and bitter with caramel, sweet bread, grapefruit rinds, milk chocolate, pine, resinous wood, overripe almost rotten lemons, freshly cut grass and caramelized nuts. Great malt but the the hops doesn’t really suit the nice malt profile.
3.3 Pours copper with a beige head. Aroma is caramel, alcohol, citrus and light grapefruit. Flavour is caramel, alcohol, citrus and dried fruit. High bitter.
3.1 Pours a hazy and orange beer with an offwhite head. The aroma is malt, caramel, fruit and alcohol. The flavor follows the nose with additional hops. The palate is sweetness and alcoholwarmth. Overall an average beer.
3.6 Cloudy amber, minimal head. Deep caramelly nose with some grapefruit and strawberry esters. Full bodied with soft mouthfeel. Plenty of brandyish peppery alcohol. Intense and soft, long resiny bitterness.
3.3 Bottle. Unclear dark amber/brown with small tan head. Aroma is malt, fruit, spices and caramel. Flavour is malt, fruit, spices, caramel, medium sweet, hosp, peppery, alcohol, little toffee and medium bitter.
3.0 Bottled 750ml (PBF, bought from Oregon) Hazy amber color, small white head. Woody, hoppy aroma. Medium to full bodied. Ryiesh, very malty, sweetish, alcoholic. Ok, but still quite alcoholic sweet after one year of cellaring.
3.7 Bottled at PBF. Cloudy amber, minimal head. Deep caramelly nose with some grapefruit and strawberry esters. Full bodied with soft mouthfeel. Plenty of brandyish peppery alcohol. Intense and soft, long resiny bitterness.
3.6 Bottled@PBF2012. Orange colour, small white head. Aroma is caramel, some sweet hoppyness, alcohol and quite pleasant maltyness. Flavour is lots of bitter and sweet hops and mild toffeeish notes. Balanced.
3.5 bottled. Pours cloudy red amber and with a tan, foamy head with good retention and spotty lacing. Nose with some floral hops, caramel and alcohol notes. Bittersweet flavor with again caramel alcohol along with orange, pine and spicey notes. Medium to full bodied. Oily to syrupy texture and soft carbonation and a lot of hops going on for a Barley. Ends up more dry, decent bitter and with an alcohol burn. An extraordinary Barley.
3.4 Markhaven Summer Fun 2012. Hazy copper with a small off-white head. Malty aroma, somewhat grainy or husky, a fruity touch and lots of alcohol. Sweet malty flavour with hot alcohol and a bit too much (and one dimensional) bitterness
3.3 Bottle @ Odense Tasting, July 2012. Pours unclear amber with a creamy head. Sweet malty nose. Green pepper, hot bitterness and a whiff of alcohol. Lacks depth.
3.7 Bottle. [thanks bigbro] Murky redish amber with a firm, staying, creamy, yellowish head. Lovely lacings. Aroma has red currants, fat sweet maltiness, light caramel, piney. Light vinious. Medium carbonation, fine dry and light creamy mouthfeel. Flavour is heavy bitter, resin, pine, apricot, caramel. Light vinious and warming in the finish.
3.6 Bottle. Pours a pale amber color with a longlasting off-white head. Has a fruity malty weak piney hoppy aroma. Fruity malty sweetish hoppy bitter dry flavor with piney hints and weak hints of dark fruit. Has a malty hoppy bitter dry finish.
3.2 bottle at ølbutikken, cloudy brown, smal yellow head. mild aroma, alc. well hidden. falvor is malty, sugary, caramelly, quiet sweet, okay, but not very deep or complex.
3.8 Bottle at Ølbutikken - shared with the Stormtroopers. Clear amber/brown – white head. Sweetness, nutty, raisins, fruity, dried fruits, light barley, nice bitterness, roasted notes, toasted malts, grape fruits, chocolate, cocoa. Nice.
3.5 650ml bottle pours a pale amber orange color with a small white head that leaves a few spots of lacing on the glass. Aroma is caramel and cereal grains with some hints of fruit and citrus hops. Taste is caramel malt sweetness with some fruitiness and a mild citrus and earthy hop bitterness. Medium to heavy body with mild carbonation and alcohol well hidden. Overall, a little too sweet for my liking but still a decent barley wine.
3.1 Very malty barley wine. Thick, chewy and chalky texture. Thin head. Syrupy notes of cocoa powder, caramel and molasses. Earthy and herbal hops with only a mild-to-moderate level of bitterness. Not quite enough bitterness to cleave off the cloying sweetness. Decent beer, but the unfermented sugars were a bit much.
