Bell's Hopslam

Bell's Hopslam

Starting with six different hop varietals added to the brew kettle & culminating with a massive dry-hop addition of Simcoe hops, Bell’s Hopslam Ale possesses the most complex hopping schedule in the Bell’s repertoire. Selected specifically because of their aromatic qualities, these Pacific Northwest varieties contribute a pungent blend of grapefruit, stone fruit, and floral notes. A generous malt bill and a solid dollop of honey provide just enough body to keep the balance in check, resulting in a remarkably drinkable rendition of the Double India Pale Ale style.

4.0 Draft into a snifter. Aroma is heavy pine, honey, and plum. Strong but not sharp bitterness. Sugary and fruity malt. Some dish soap. Very enjoyable sipper. Very well balanced.
3.1 Taste is mild
3.7 Taps clear amber with a good parchment head that leaves good lacing. Aroma presents resiny hops, tangy grapefruit and orange, crisp raw malt. Flavor provides tangy and sweet grapefruit and orange, piney hops, raw malt, a tropical hint. Texture yields firm body, lively fizz, and a piney finish. Slam them hops! Earlier Rating: 4/3/2011 Total Score: 4.5 Comes out of the tap a pretty clear, dark amber with a fine-bubbled off-white head. Aroma is monumentally hoppy, promising a serious IPA. Flavor is hoppy in the extreme, making this beer taste like a liquid pine tree. There is just a hint of honey sweetness that nicely offsets the firm but not fierce bitterness. Texture is rough and tingly, leaving behind a strong fizz. Recommended to all hop-heads.
4.2 16th February 2020. Tap in Bangers, Austin, Texas, Beer #4900! Literally just off my flight from U.K. Rainey Street is kicking, it’s 24 degrees and the beer is a monster, clear. Aroma is citrus, pine, taste is bitter and pithy, but so smooth for the abv, marmalade, pith, bitter resin. Love it, and the location is a huge bonus.
4.4 poured into a snifter from 12oz can packaged 1/14/20. a month ago... Appearance: pours a deep golden color with a 1/2" head that quickly dissipates to half that but then retains well. clarity is perfect. above average lacing observed. Aroma: piney, grassy, dank, west coast hop aromas dominate. some mild sweetness. hint of boozyness. Taste: pungent piney af hop flavors combine with bold malt and honey sweetness for a balance (if you can call it that) that is just amazing for this style. Nothing is subtle here. Mouthfeel: med-full body. oily, sticky and rich texture. assertive astringency assaults the palate. carbonation is moderate. The finish is long, with intense hop bitterness and alcohol heat lingering in the palate Overall: this former (from the simpler days of American IPA s) superstar of west coast DIPAs, does not disappoint in any way. It is an extremely well made hop bomb that delivers what its name suggests.
3.7 This beer pours a mostly clear golden amber color with a two finger off white head. The aroma is pretty sweet, honey, some dankness, pine hop resin, and some citrus notes. The flavor is really heavy on the sweetness and honey. For being called hopslam I feel like there is a lack of hops. However, that doesn’t take anything away and it’s still a great beer. The alcohol is masked very well and the mouthfeel is on the medium to heavy side.
4.2 12 oz can. Been waiting a while to get my hands on this! Smells of citrus and pine, touch of caramel malts in the background. Translucent amber/orange. A hop bomb of an ipa. Tastes lightly of citrus, followed by resinous pine. A hint of sweet malts attempts to peek in. Booze is well hidden. Medium mouthfeel, not overly sweet like some higher ABV beer tend to be, and not sticky either. Finish is bitter with a hint of sweetness, the bitterness does linger in the background until your next hop blast from the following sip. Smooth and lovely, if you like IPA's that is.
4.4 delicious and strong beer. tons of hops, great flavor. well deserved ranking. worth the price.
4.2 9 Feb 2021, Hoppy with the resinous citrus, honey and floral notes. Complex. Ver satisfying. Rating 4.2. Gold color with a white head that is maintained with steady carbonation. The aroma is a muted pine with some honey notes. The flavor profile is the same with a bittersweet finish. Very enjoyable. Earlier Rating: 2/11/2015 Total Score: 4.2 Updated Jan 28, 2019. Draft. Golden color poured a with a white head. The aroma was floral and resinous citrus with notes of pine, grapefruit, lemon and apricot. Intensely bitter and an obvious alcohol punch. Feb 11, 2015 Draft. Clear reddish color. Hoppy aroma with the taste being bitter, a fruit flavor like grapefruit and alcohol.
4.4 12 ounce, canned 01/22/2020. Clear, orange-amber pour with a big spongy foam slowly settling to a half-inch disc of meringue. Nose is lemon, orange, resin, toast and caramel. Super-smooth flavor mix is of the same stuff and hard to believe this is even close to 10%. Near-medium carbonation and an easy drinking balance in this medium bodied brew. Earlier Rating: 2/22/2009 Total Score: 3.9 12 oz. Pours a hazy orange-amber with a lasting disc of bubbles. Aroma of grapefruit, orange, pineapple, light caramel and catspray. Flavor is grapefruit, pineapple, peppery green herb, resin and alcohol. Light-medium body is dry with hops and alcohol, and sorta smooth. Nice lacing. Simple and straightforward hops, but hey that’s what was intended.
3.9 Taster. Poured clear copper color with an average frothy white head that lasted with very good lacing. Moderate to heavy aromatic hop aroma. Medium to abundant body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. Moderate to heavy bittersweet flavor with a moderate to heavy bittersweet finish of medium to long duration. This solid version of this beer met my expectations. Earlier Rating: 11/8/2006 Total Score: 4 Bottle. Poured amber color with a large frothy white head that was lasting with excellent lacing. Heavy complex sour citrus aroma. Medium body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. Medium sour citrus bitter flavor with a medium sour bitter finish of long duration. This is a standout beer.
3.5 Orange-gold pour, small white head. Big caramel orange flavor, butterscotch, boozy, minimal aroma. Nice body.
4.3 Beautiful golden clear pour with lively carbonation and dense off white head. The name doesn't lie. Truly an epic hop bomb of all characters, some resin, some florals, but overall smooth and very bitter. Full bodied and the honey is subtle but present. Long aftertaste, very aromatic, excellent!
3.5 12oz can at home. Pours a deep gold almost amber colour with a large pillowy white head. Aroma is grapefruit, tropical fruit, some caramel. Flavour is hoppy yes, but there’s a sweetness from the honey that’s a little too tough. It’s very good and very complex but I think some of the hype has made this be such a highly rated beer.
3.1 Soso. I have had better beers. Tremendously overrated. Ok. Just very overrated.
4.6 Goos grief this is good. I usually avoid high hop beer but HopSlam is hop abundant without the in your face kick. Potent so stay at home with your 6 pack.
4.2 Very hoppy 😁
3.8 Can in the USA - golden color, white head. nice hoppy notes, resinious, not too tropical sweet, which is ofte the case with IIPAs. quite easy for 10% and well drinkable. nice!
4.2 Can. Orange color with an off white head. Grapefruit resin aroma. Caramel toffee hops flavor. Medium heavy body.
3.9 Can hauled back from the States by Rian (thanks to him). A hazy orange/amber coloured pour with a healthy white head on top. Hoppy, malty, caramel aroma. Tastes hoppy, malty, caramel, some honey and pine too, slight bitterness. Nice DIPA, great to have finally tried this one.
4.6 Sweet, malty, hoppy aroma. Incredibly well-balanced taste, with strong malt flavor along with big hop character. Fantastic beer!
4.7 The end of winter tells me this incredible brew is coming! Holy cow! Can’t go wrong with this brew unless you drink the entire 6 pack
3.9 Can 12oz. Pours a clear medium amber with a light creamy head. Aromas pop of floral honey/hops, citrus, fruity. Flavors citrus, floral, pine, slight alcohol in the nose. High bitterness, dry, medium sweetness. Overall after all the DIPAs I've tried for so many years this DIPA doesn't as far as my palate is concerned stand out as the best. It is very good yes, but not better than several DIPAs I've tried. Perhaps a little overrated. Very well done overall just a little over hyped. I will need to try this again in a glass bottle and check the date. I may have had an outdated can.
4.2 Makea karkkia kuten aromi. Maku on makea, joillakin miehillä on tasapaino humalassa. Piilottaa alkoholinsa hyvin ilman palovammaa tai makua.
5.0 Whoa, so many flavors
4.5 Can. Pours hazy copper big ol head. Honey, fruity, resiny aroma. Honey, citrus, resin, berries flavor. Long resiny dipa palate. Fantastic balance and mix of resin, honey, fruity berries, long smacking hops. Really special kickass dipa.
5.0 1
4.2 12 oz draft pour during Happy Hour at Stadium Brewing on 20th March 2019. This is a beer I have been longing to try and it didn't disappoint one iota. Slight haze to the bulbous glass of the brown body, huge off-white head of foam that left some heavy lacing. Malty and hoppy with a semi-sweet base which the piney hops balance out nicely, some light citrus notes appear and a hop bitterness takes over towards the end of each sip. A delightful beer!
4.3 Pours up a crystal clear golden color with a frothy white head on top. Lots of lace left behind in the glass. Some active carbonation rising up. A very pretty beer. Sweet candy like aroma. Taste is sweet, with some malts to balance out the hops. Hides its alcohol well with no burn or booze taste. Great beer all around.
3.9 3/16/19 Back at the apt checking in gatos before heading back to my A’s. Soft, hoppy nose. More on the herbal side. Not as potent aroma as expected. Taste is a complex hop showcase with good sweet malt balance. Lots of dank/herbal flavors and a good presence of honey-sweet malt and vague citrus. Lots of bitterness and lots of sweetness too. Palate is big and fluffy but dries quickly. Overall, it’s a big flavorful brew that really showcases some awesome hops but doesn’t have the crispness and wow factor I had hoped for. Tastes like a more floral 2-hearted. Great brew but I think my expectations were too high.
