2.9 Bottle. Pours a clear golden with hints of red color, medium sized off white head that settles out quickly. Aroma is caramel, fruit, honey. Flavor is malt, caramle, dried fruits, brown sugar. Palate is medium , medium to low carbonation, sweet finish. Decent, but not worthy of a 20 year anniv. beer. Disappointing.
3.4 12 oz. bottle - thanks to OhioDad for this special brew! Pours hazy chestnut color with a large beige head that diminished quickly to a ring of bubbles. Wow, this is one sweet and fruity mother of an amber. Aroma is caramel, toffee and rich, ripe summer fruits. Flavor is sweet and rich as well, more ripe fruits, toasty notes, alfalfa and spice with lingering honey-floral aftertaste. Medium to full body and velvety carbonation.
3.1 A nice floral hop aroma, lightly malted, and somewhat bready. Appearance is a amber/brownish color with a nice sized off white head. Flavor is nice mild hops, malt backing, and a light fruitiness to it. Palate is bitter, long, nicely carbonated for the style. Overall, It doesn’t blow you away but its an enjoyable Amber Ale. I was probably expecting a bigger beer for an Anniversary Ale.
3.3 Bottle, with ClarkVV and Sully. Quiet sticky and sweet. Quite malty, with some plummy/raisiny fruit. Not too heavy and shows a light to medium body. Quite nice. Some late spicey characters noticed in the finish, hints of ginger.
2.4 (Bottle 35,5 cl) Clear amber with an off-white head. Aroma of caramel. Medium body with some caramel and then nothing. This beer really fades to become bland and superflouos. 290806
3.4 Bottled. Amber coloured. Quite clear. Dense beige head. Citrus, sweetness, fuits and light spices in the nose. Flavour of herbs, caramel, sweetness, light alcohol and light spice. Medium bodied with some light watery notes. Citric and dry end with light bitternotes. Thanks to BBB63 for this beer.
2.8 An amber beer with a disappearing orange head. The aroma is sweet spicy - which includes notes of ginger, but also light notes of oranges. The flavor is sweet malty and again quite spicy with ginger standing out.
3.4 Bit on the bland and sweet side. I need more hops. Single from Riley’s in madison off state st.
2.6 Bottled. Fruity aroma. Sweet fruity and slightly malty flavour. Light to medium body. Quite bland.
3.5 Bottle from Josh (daalamar) Thanks! Looks like orange muddy creek water. No head at all. Smells fruity, malty, and orange. Taste is very similar to the way wheat love tastes, over carbonated feel in the mouth. Still, its interesting, and certainly a very unique amber ale. Perhaps one they should consider adding to the production line.
3.6 12 oz bottle. Batch 7040. Orangy Amber in color, nice quickly disapating head. Smells of hops, with malty carriage. Citurs aftertaste with the malt starting off teh taste and then kicking in again in the later aftertaste. Interesting brew, unique taste and I agree it’s worthy of their 20th Anniversary.
3.5 12 oz. bottle from dilly deli. Batch 7040. Bottle conditioned. Drank on 7/10/06. Clear with some floaties. Copper in color with small light tan head. Drops very quickly. No foam, no lacing. Pretty strong aroma. Underlying sweetness with a big bouquet of florally hops. Chinookish similar to my all chinook AB clone. Citrus / grapefruit. Flavor - fairly bitter in front. Bitter, but with a swwet and substantial malt backbone on the tongue. Citrusy (mostly grapefruit) and floral hop flavor after the swallow. Palate - decent sized medium body. A little tingly on the tongue. Overall - a pretty good beer. Not sure what it is. A big IPA or american strong ale probably (I was wrong obvioiusly, but this is strange for an amber ale IMO). A little heavy on the citrus for me, but good and enjoyable just like everything else from Bells.
3.3 Bottle. Interesting choice for an anniversary ale. Pours a hazy amber with a thin head. Caramel malts dominate the aroma. The taste is caramel, floral hops, and a slight bread note. An extra plus is that it is not as watery as most ambers I have had. This one is a cut above.
4.3 Cloudy dirty orange in color with a small head. Medium body with a well balanced malt / hop ratio. Clean refreshing taste, has an initial sweet caramel malty flavor with a hop bitterness at the end. This is a great summertime brew, one of my new favorites, this is at the top of my list for ales. Tastes great with pepperoni pizza.
3.5 (Bottle via trade with BBB63, thanks Mike!) Pours a cloudy fairly deep amber with about 1/2" of amber-biege head. Aroma of fruity hops and malt. No real lacing. Mouthfeel full, smooth, lightly prickly in finish. Nicely balanced fairly mild flavor of fruity hops and malt with a moderately bitter finish. Pretty tasty.
3.0 Bottle. Pours a cloudy darkish amber with very little head. Malty and toasty on the nose. Caramel and coffee with hops on the palate. Too much roasted flavors and not enough hops for my liking in an amber. Thanks to Styles for the bottle.
3.8 12oz bottle. Batch #7100. Hazy and cloudy. Yellowish brown and murky. Halo and web of white head. Caramel malt and citrus. Cocoa and toast. Smooth malts with a pruny, slight burn flavor. Sweet and toffee with a zesty lively crisp finish. Good hops. Fruity. This is good! Nothing over the top, but hey, it’s another solid effort from Larry!
3.5 Dull copper pour, small head, gone quickly. Malty, Citrus on the back of my tongue, slightly hoppy. A pretty good brew, especially for a style, that I don’t seek out much. Thanks to MarkR for the brew!
3.3 12oz. bottle. Dark orange with a small white head. Tinges of citric hops over a mellow slightly caramel maltiness in the aroma. Ruddy, singed malt flavors with some toastiness. Mild sweetness in the finish with some hop astringency in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium light, fairly smooth and somewhat dry.
3.8 12 oz bottle: who says you have to make a big beer, an imperial whatever, for an anniversary beer? Poured cloudy orange with a medium sized beige head. Lots of floaters in this one. Aroma is of malt and yeast with a little fruity hops. Flavor is all malt- a touch of brown sugar with mild hops. Light grass finish. This is an American Amber Ale at its finest.
4.2 Huge props to OhioDad for this bottle in a trade. Pours turbid dark coppery (crayola orange through direct light) with 1-finger white head. The aroma is heavy corn flakey roasty malt, citric and fruity, with some nuts and toffee, and a little bit of sour fruit. The taste is roasty toasty Wheaties dipped in honey, topped with pears, mangoes, honeydew, and walnuts, then given a small immersion in cacao powder. The palate is very smooth, on the dense side, and complex. I get more toffeeish nuttiness and more roasty Wheaties as it warms, plus some more tropical fruitiness, with massive complexity due to the non-filtration. This one is great. In fact, as far as I’m concerned, it might be the best damned amber ale I’ve ever quaffed.
3.7 Bottle courtesy, and thanks to Styles. Thanks bro! Deep copper pour sits under a froth of off white, rocky froth. A subtle lace lines the glass. Heavy malt aromas with brown sugar, burnt tobacco, butterscotch, and american hops to round it out. Sweet burnt malt flavours are first here, with caramel, subtle fruit, and a good hops bitterness. Medium bodied, pleasant carbonation with lenghty bitter hops and sweet malt lingering. Good representation of the style.
3.3 not too bad overall. another good call by bell’s not their best, not their worst, pleasant enough flavor, medium color and body
3.7 good bells flavor. has that taste that every bells has. good treat for all of us bells fans out there.
3.5 Pours a hazy copper(sediment everywhere) and a fizzy white head that turns to film rather quickly. Caramel malt is dominating the nose with some faint odors of hops, yeast and alcohol. The flavor is a somewhat light caramel malt, a smidge of citrus and apricot... some alcohol and pine in the finish. The beer has a nice medium body, it’s malty over the tounge and finishes with a bitter dryness...though that bitter aftertaste isn’t the most pleasant one I’ve encountered. I kind of wish the malty sweetness would’ve stick around longer before that dryness kicked in and took it all away. Though I will say this beer, with it’s sweet/dry characteristics went great with dinner. All in all I will say that this is a good beer, and while it may not be the biggest or boldest beer they ever produced, it certainly hold some nice subtle complexities.
3.6 Bottle. Pours hazy copper red with a nice white frothy head, that diminishes to a wisp. Malty aroma of caramel and toffee, with a slight hint of fruity esters. Nice medium bodied malt profile with notes of brown sugar and toasted nuts. Finishes sweet and dry with some bitterness. A little thin on the texture. When you don’t want a huge beer, but want some complexity and flavor....this ones does the trick. Another good beer from Bells.
3.7 bottle - Pours cloudy and copper colored with a thin, rapidly fading head. The aroma is quite malty, as is the taste. Mouthfeel is creamy and medium bodied with some lively carbonation. This is a sweet beer, though there is some noticeable hops for balance, especially in the finish. It reminds me of Rogue’s Dead Guy Ale, a bock, though not as good. Still, it’s a very nice beer. I’d gladly drink a few of them in one sitting.
3.6 Transparent amber with huge off-white head. Aroma dominated by caramel and toffee sweetness, some yeasty fruit esters in the background. Flavor starts with a huge caramel malt sweetness, fades towrads the middle into dry toasted/roasted malt, finishes with a tiny bit of hop bitters. Long residuel sugar aftertaste. All the sugary sweetness almost pushes this into doppel territory. Nice creamy, thick mouthfeel for an amber. Really good amber, but still an amber, and for me it’s tough to rate these to style, instead of taste buds.
3.0 batch 7100. pours somewhat thick with a small white head. aroma of apricots yeast and toasty sweet malt. slightly sweet with some toasty malt. medium bodied on the palate with a weak and slightly unpleasant bitter finish. a little disappointing for a 20th anniversary beer from bells.
2.9 Bottle from Ohio Dad Thanks! Pours a cloudy tea-brown with an aroma of pipe smoke and raisin. Minimal head with paltry lacing. Thick in appearance. Flavor is nutty, with hints of raisin and dull spice, particularly nutmeg. Palate is medium thick. Decent brew.
