Bell's Wheat Two Ale

Bell's Wheat Two Ale

This beer is the first in Bell’s Wheat Project. Project comprises five new ales, four in series and one specialty strong product.

The first four, Wheat 2, Wheat 4, Wheat 6 and Wheat eight are all made using 55% Wheat (either wholly or mostly malted) and 45% Barley malt.

The barley malt makeup is exactly the same in each of the four and consists of three different malts.

The total amount of grain in each of the four is also exactly the same, so each of them should have a virtually identical original gravity. The type and amount of hops in each of the four is exactly the same. And the processing through the brewhouse and fermentation is also exactly the same. The changing factors between the ales are the composition of the 55% of wheat used and the type and number of yeast strains used. In Wheat 2 the 55% of wheat is made up of two different kinds of wheat malt, and this ale is made with two different yeasts.

3.2 Translucent lighter copper color, thin head just around the perimeter. Has some banana in the nose and taste, finishes quick and dry.
3.8 Rated 9/12/06: Nice wheat produced here. Good yeasty aroma reminiscent of a hefeweizen touches of banana and spices. Pours a cloudy golden yellow, slim white head was a let down but decent lacing is present. Smooth full satisfying mouthfeel, finish is a little detracting. Flavor is very solid and enjoyable. Heavy wheat presence, lightly hopped. This american wheat is very close to a classic german hefe in many aspects. Solid effort.
3.5 Golden color out of the bottle with a thin off-white head. Smooth wheat mouthfeel. Caramel sweetness with some dark toffee and raisen notes. Some begian sugar sense about it. Very nice beer, even at its age.
3.5 Nice cloudy golden/amber pour with moderate thick white foam that dissipates quickly down to a thin covering. Slight sediment, even after a careful pour. Wheaty aroma, with hints of bananas and spices. Slightly sweet banana taste with hints of grassy hops. Hoppy finish that goes down pretty smooth. Kind of halfway between a pale ale ad a wheat, but very nice.
3.2 BoTTle Murky orange with a fluffy white head. Aroma is wheat, banana, cloves, and yeast. Sweet with that banana yeast taste. Body is a little light in the finish. Finish also a nice banana aftertaste and some spices...its grew on me...nice wheat beer from one of my favorite brewerys
3.4 Very yeasty... very wheaty, very good... with a light citrus zest and a slightly sweet finish.
3.4 you can taste the weat in this one quite well compared to the others in this same project
3.2 Lots of yeast in the aroma.Pours a medium copper with an off white head. The wheat stands out in the flavor.Medium mouthfeel with a sweet finish.
2.4 Yeast and light citrus aroma. Hazy golden brown with plenty of yeast and sediment. Medium palate. Very yeasty flavor with some lemon zest--I haven’t really enjoyed any of the wheat series beers from Bells.
3.2 Pours a cloudy peach amber, topped by a quarter inch of nearly white foam. Okay head retention, good lacing. Very mild wheat in the aroma. Tangy and sweet wheat flavor with a fair amount of hops for balance. Some spice and yeast flavor in the finish. Nice representation of an American pale wheat. Medium body, solid carbonation.
3.1 Nice little wheat beers. Light on hops, strong on spice of orange peel and a light fruityness.
3.0 12 oz bottle. Poured a clear golden orange color. It turned cloudy when I stirred up the sediment on the bottom of the bottle. The head was bubbly, white and reduced quickly to a lasting thin layer of foam. There was some lace on the glass at the end. Pleasant yeasty bread dough aroma with a touch of citrus. Tart up front with a strange grainy bitterness that mellowed in the middle giving way to slightly sweet bready malt. Finishes dry and grainy. So so.
3.6 Decent frothy white head with very good carbonation. Head settles slowly and remains for a while. Nice malty aroma with a little wheat and honey. Light floral hops aroma in there also. Medium golden brown in color. Light malty sweetness in the flavor. Hint of roasted grains and wheat. Really very little wheat. Quite the tasty and balanced brew. Very little grit and no grassy notes. Little bit of bready malts. I would almost consider this to be a amber ale. Finishes clean with very little dryness. A pretty darn good and easy drinking brew.
3.6 Well, I am flying out tomorrow morning early, and I swore that I was not going to drink. But I am not tired, and I need a night cap...or two. Pours a translucent golden orange with a thin fizzy white head. Strong yeast and clovey aroma. Nice soft mouthfeel. Considering the age of this, I suspect this lost some residual sweetness. Flavor of toasted grain, wheat, and a hint of fruitiness. Mild spicy bitterness on the finish. Interesting beer. An american wheat with a belgian twist. I wonder what this was like fresh. Thanks to Landseer for giving this to me so I could complete the Wheat Series
3.9 (07.17.06) 12 oz brown bottle from Archer Liquors, Chicago, IL. Lot 7083. Slight sweet malt aroma. Poured clear dark golden with small white head. Slight carbonation. Light-to-medium bodied beer that starts with light malt sweetness and fruity flavors. Finished with light malt fade. No discernable hop presence. Very good drinkable wheat beer. I preferred this ale over Bell’s wheat four and six.
3.6 Bottle from Jay (springslicker) Thanks! Pours out a bright orange color without much of a head on it. Smell is sweet, oranges, lemon, spices, and some malts. Taste is smooth and sweet, with a little hoppy flavors protruding out. Good beer, that went well while sitting outside on the beach. The first of the 4 wheat series that I am going to have today. Not too shabby, I think I like the wheat love better though.
3.9 possibly my favorite from the wheat series. I love this beer. Perfect combination of wheat malts and yeasts. Great sweet flavor, full but not overbearing. Refreshing, and little bitterness.
3.6 This one had everyting a good basic wheat beer needs: The amber yellow color, the lasting white head, the fruity yeast working with the chewy, grainy wheat, and respectable ’mellow’ hops signature. These go down way too easily.
3.2 Bottle... Lightly hazy golden ale with a small, creamy, off-white head. The nose is fruity and grainy with a malty note of honey. Mildly phenolic with whispers of smoke and spice. Moderately sweet flavor. Grainy with a pinch of salt. Medium-bodied with medium carbonation. Finishes crisp and mostly clean. Thanks to headbanger for sending the bottle!
3.5 12oz bottle- An orange with a good white head and has an aroma of citrus and banana. Taste of strong alcohol on the front end but then invites some wheat flavor. Not bad after the initial taste.
3.6 Wonderful, fruity, banana aroma. Also has a faint dirty sock thing going on. Murky orange, with an off-white head. I should have used my weissbier glass for maximum head formation. Head is fairly small. Nice orange color. Has a harsh alcohol mouthfeel at initial sip. Tastes a bit like a bad vodka or grain alcohol. Tastes a little past it’s prime. Still, a pretty darn good American wheat.
3.7 Bottle thanks to Styles- Pours darker side of amber, with a one finger frothy white head, and literally thousands peices of sediment. Head reduces quickly, leaving almost no lace. Aromas are pear, american hops, peaty malt, smoke, iodine, apple skin, lemon zest, clove. Flavours match the aroma with lemon, pear, and the smoke, but then add vanilla, wheaty malt, and bittering, dry hops. FInishes fruity, citrus, lush, and hoppy. A facking hoppy wheat beer!? Bells does it up doggy style! A solid American Wheat mother fackers. Thanks Chris!
3.7 12 oz bottle I wish I would have picked up the entire series of Wheat beers from Bell’s. This one restored my confidence in them being well made experiments after the disappointment of the Wheat Eight. Aroma / Appearance - Wheat, bananas, limes, pears, lemons and a few other fruity scents form a pleasing nose. The body was cloudy and slightly yeasty with a half-finger head lingering on top. I blame the chunks on a bad pour; they aren’t a fault of the beer itself as much as me not expecting them. Flavor / Palate - The first thing I thought of were orange creamsicles. The creamy filling mouthfeel also had hints of lemons, peaches, butterscotch, wheat bread slathered in nutella and some traces of butteriness. Overall it was extremely rich, lasting for several minutes before it began to fade. There was a nice balance to the entire bottle. If you can still track this down, give it a try.
3.7 Bottle rating. Pours a cloudy amber color with many small yeast particles floating throughout. The head is more porous initially, but after the unfiltered yeast is added, it becomes more creamy looking. The inviting scent of this beer includes lemon grass, orange, maybe even peach or apricot with some caramel malts present as well. Has some belgian wit qualities. This is refreshing and an improvement over many in the american wheat style. I could enjoy this pretty much anytime. A good thirst quencher. I have come to expect good brews from Bells and this one fits the mold.
3.5 White, pillowy head with excellent retention; golden-orange appearance with some particulates. Pleasant medium nose, showing German characteristics - bananas and clove appear quite a bit. Mouthfeel is more American (in one of the endearing senses of the word): nicely-hopped, good carbonation, green apple, some honey, finishing dry and spicy. It’s as if someone swiped my German hefeweizen halfway... I’m mildly confused, but very interesting and tasty.
3.6 355ml bottle obtained in a trade with OhioDad, thanks Scott. Batch 7083. Murky orange in colour, large long lasting cream coloured head, lots of lace, some dark particles. The aroma has very light caramel malt sweetness, light citrus, some must/yeast. The flavour is of yeast first, some floral hops, some lemon, light orange. Creamy mouthfeel, light body, mild carbonation. Finishes with a light bitterness, some citrus. Pretty good, the citrus, floral hops and malt all balance well together.
3.1 bottle. batch 7083. Aroma: Corinader spiciness, banana, touch of bubblegum, and a slight berry-like aroma. Wheat comes through a little stronger as it warms. Appearance: Hazy and dark yellow in color, there are alot of floaties in this one. Head was just slightly off-white and a good three fingers in height. Flavor: Light citrus, peppery, slight banana. Wheat flavor is subtle and quite nice. Hoppiness is more than I expected, and overwhelms the other flavors a bit. Palate: Light bodied. Good carbonation. Some of the floaties were big enough to be felt on the tongue. A nice dry finish. Overall: IMHO, the hops overwhelm the other flavors in this beer. A nice beer, and certainly refreshing, but I look forward to the others in the series
3.3 Pours hazy and dark golden. Aroma is sweet and yeasty with banana and buttery flavors. Taste is grainy wheat and yeasty with citrus and bananas. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Keep trying, you’re getting close.
3.6 Bottle from trade with OhioDad! Batch 7083. Poured a darker golden color with a nice white head. A very sweet aroma with spices, fruit, and wheat. The flavor found a great mix of spices, banana, wheat, and lemon. Medium body that had lively carbonation. Thanks Scott!
3.9 Thanks to OhioDad. Cloudy yellow orange beer with a thick fluffy head. Very wheaty aroma with a bit of orange citrus and light clovey spice. Also some appley notes. Soft creamy texture, full-bodied. Wheaty flavour, some earthy/noble hop flavour and some light apple/pear fruitiness. Long spicy finish especially as it starts to warm. Quite hoppy as well. Nice beer with a very bready flavour.
