Bellwoods Jelly King

Bellwoods Jelly King

He is a ruler, an overlord, a top dog, a crowned head. In the realm of all that is tart and
sour, Jelly King reigns supreme. Rather than choosing between sour or hoppy, we decided
to create a beer that would be both at the same time. Showcasing the aromatic benefits of
a generous dry hop (Citra, Amarillo, and Cascade), harnessing the prowess of lactic acidity,
and coming to a bottle near you without a pesky two year slumber in oak, Jelly King is the
fermented embodiment of immediate gratification.

An everyday, juicy, drinkable sour with punchy hop aromatics and fruity foundational
flavours. Low bitterness, light body, and pale yellow in colour, with notes of fuzzy peach,
tangerine, and cedar.

4.0 Tap @ Sweeney’s Rooftop Bar. Hazy, straw colour with well retained white head. Aromas of citrus, stone fruit and woody elements. Immediately sour, created by the lactobatillius, followed by lemony notes, juicy peach and subtle woody elements. Very refreshing.

3.4 500ml brown bottle from the LCBO. Pours a hazed golden colour with a fizzy off-white head that dissipates quickly leaving no lacing. Carbonation seems on the bigger bubble size, like pop. Very sour nose with the citrus notes in the background. The taste is quite sour as well with a dryer finish. The sourness is so intense, it is hard to get the citrus and other fruits. Still, not bad as in not so funky-earthy from the Brett, and not much yeast, tart lingering as some in the style. Sourness with some mild blended fruitiness.
3.8 Back up beer as they didn’t have the one I ordered, started on a bad note, but tried to recover in picking something solid, so not what I was hoping for but, a nice sour to accompany good company and fish and chips. Got the bottle version last night (20-03-05), picked on location last June, was impressed by the dryness and sourness, gave it a +0.2.

3.6 A 14 ounce serving on tap at Darby’s Gastown in Vancouver. An orange amber cloudy beer with modest white head and a sour fruity nose. Sour fruity on the palate, but not a huge pucker, so nicely done. Which fruit notes? Berry fruits, stone fruits, and citrus abound, but I get a lemon note coming through. I give this a 3.6 for now..
4.4 What a great beer. This used to be my favourite sour until I started exploring other Bellwoods sours. Still a very solid beer.
