Berghoff Original Lager

Berghoff Original Lager

Golden in color, with a moderately full body, Berghoff is a well-rounded beer. The aroma is faintly fruity, with a quick, clean finish, and lightly lingering bitterness. Berghoff Lager is made with Brewer’s Two-Row Malt, Carapils Malt, Caramel Malt and domestic hops.

2.5 Pours a clear golden hue, with a thin white head. Aroma is grain and cereal. Slightly fruity, and grainy flavor with a metalic, coppery after taste. Light to medium body. Good for the price, but not a mind blower by any means
2.0 Clear gold with a white head. Aroma of malt and boiled cabbage. Taste is sweet malt with some fruit, butter and vegetal notes. Very light bittereness.
2.7 "Berghoff Prairie Lager" Bottle pours hazy gold with a thin white head. Aroma is grainy and tart with notes of cereal, apple, and honey. Flavor is pretty basic with grassy hops and sweet malt dominating. Overall body is light to moderate and the finish is lightly bitter.
3.2 @ORD. Golden and bright with a gentle sparkle and a thin head. Lightly malty and vaguely appley aroma. Moderately malty palate - almost all pale malts. There is a noticeable light bitterness around 20IBUs, but not really any hop character besides that. Good for what it is.
2.6 12 ounce bottle. Pours a pale yellow with an average white head. Aroma of sweet malt, wheat and some citrus. Taste is grain, malt, lemon and a bit of spice. Some bitterness at the finish. Decent.
3.3 This beer is really pretty decent, but still nothing much to it. I like some more complexity.
2.8 12oz bottle from Woodman’s poured into a Shaker. Labeled as "Prairie Lager Beer". Pours a pale yellow with a small bit of fizzy white head. Smells lightly of hops and a decent amount of rotting barnyard skunk. Taste is lightly sweet and lightly sour on the aftertaste. Actually has a decent, if very light, hop flavor. I think this one may be the best of any from the Berghoff family I’ve had yet. It doesn’t have that artificial sugar taste the other ones have. Medium bodied with a sticky and oily texture. Lively carbonation and not much to speak of in way of finish. Overall, its not too bad. Nothing I would buy again but I’ll at least finish this one off.
2.3 12 ounce bottle under the Prairie Lager label from a sampler. Pours clear amber with a thin white fizzy head that quickly fades. Aroma of green banana and toasted malts. The taste is intensely sweet, sugar malts, some apple, toastiness, very faint hops. Almost cloyingly sweet. Thin bodied.
2.0 Poured from 12oz bottle, pours a clear golden with a thin white head, aroma is of faint malt with a hint of hops, the flavor has a fruity touch to it but finishes with metal, meh.
1.7 A light, fruity lager. It didn’t have too much diacetyl, but it was there. Had it at O’Hare airport while those bastards delayed my flight and thought abotu groping me.
2.6 The "lightest" is their Berghoff Lager, which is the training wheels beer for most, I’m sure. It’s probably all malt, as it had a nice full body for an American lager and was very clean, with nary a hint of hoppy balance. While better than expected, it’s still a pretty average effort. Serving type: on-tap
3.3 Sampled at the brewery on Adams St. downtown Chicago. Aroma smells of corn husk and honey. Appearance is pale yellow hue. Typical of a lager. Taste is honey, sweet, clear, little malt, no hops. Great session brew!
2.5 Decent lager. A little but of malty sweetness. Not super exciting. Serving: Bottle
3.7 My bottle says this beer is called Prairie Lager. I like that name better than Original Lager. However, Monroe Wisconsin is actually part of the Wisconsin Driftless Area, quite the opposite of the prairie. Anyways, for a Pale Lager, this one’s about as good as you can ask for or expect.
2.0 Bottle to mug. I actually had to check some of the other descriptions to make sure that the sweet corn / grain / maltyness wasn’t that it was skunked. Much too malty sweet. Not my bag.
3.1 Light amber in color. Decent body and an overall decent light later flavor. But a bit of a buttery di-acetyl flavor and aroma. Earlier Rating: 3/24/2010 Total Score: 2.7 Pale yellow. Aroma of light malts and some skunk. Plain, generic lager taste with mild bitter aftertaste. Put this the same category as Point Special. Okay for a mindless drink.
1.5 Pours pale gold with a 1 finger head white head that fades somewhat quickly and a light effervescence. Aroma is corny grain, light fruity notes, hints of grass and butter. Flavor is sweet grainy malt, apple skins, corn grits, butter, sweet vegetal notes, light toast and planty hops. Palate is light to medium bodied, slightly oily thoroughout and lightly carbonated. This brew is really not doing it for me.
2.4 12oz bottle from sampler pack. Pours clear golden with white head. Aromas of pale malts, grain, and some corn. Flavor is pale malt, grains, grassy hops, and some metallic notes that appear to be part of every Berghoff beer I have had tonight. Another crap pale lager.
3.2 Draught. A hint of caramel. I actuallly always thought this was more of a vienna. OK.
2.6 Bottled. Clear yellow color, big white head, quite some carbonation. Aroma of grain, corn, malt. Reasonable bitter, corn, malt. Ok pale lager.
2.2 12 oz. bottle from a friend in Wisconsin, not sure where she got it. Pours a clear and fizzy pale yellow with a finger-thick white head. Aroma of sweet and pale malts, corn, sugar, grains, and some hops. Flavor is pretty much the same, with corn, grains, malts, and more sweetness than I’d anticipated. Light-bodied, with plenty of carbonation. Sweet and a little skunky. I took a few swigs and then soaked a couple bratwursts in it before grilling them. This is fine if you want to have a different pale lager around than one of the macros.
2.8 12oz Bottle of "Berghoff Prairie Lager Beer." Soft, slightly skunky-lager aroma, some boring pretzel dust and a bit of lemon candy. Slightly hazy mid-gold, with a foamy off-white head. Flavor is kind of wet and soppy. Minerals, dusty hops, blandness. Bland and kind of unexciting. It’s not offensive for a pale-type lager, so that makes it drinkable, but it seems like there’s more residual sugar than one would want for what should be such a drinkable beer. Plus, not enough hop balance. Probably one of the better Pale Lagers I’ve ever had, as it lacks any real offensive qualities. Kudos for that.
2.0 Clear yellow, puffy white foam. Very skunky, grassy aroma. Taste is ugh, soured malts, grassy, heavy syrupy sweetness.
2.6 12oz bottle pourd into a shaker. BOL pours urine yellow with a very small soapy looking head. The aroma is very typical lager with hints of aluminium, granite, water and grass. The taste is better than I expected with a medium light body, nicely integrated hops but maybe a tad over-carbonated. The finish is slightly fruity and lingers a bit.
2.3 Bottle. Courtesy of mother in law. Aroma had some grain ans coriander spice to it little odd. Cloudy gold bdy with white head. Had some fruit flavor and a spicey biering at times. Was more like a hefe / Lager mix.
2.1 Golden with white head. Musty, malt sweet, rice aroma. Grain, lemon, sweet malt, and rice flavours. Dry and lite.
0.9 Pours clear golden crisp with good carb but taste lacks and is very bland. Had at the berghoff in chicago.
2.2 Gift from my Wisconsin hook up. Thanks Jamie. Again not a horrible brewery but nothing that stands out for me. The pour was nice. A mild aroma of hop and skunk. A mild spicy finish.
2.6 Berghoff Prairie Lager. 12oz twist-off bottle. Clear golden yellow. Look like the open prairies with its amber waves of grain. Aroma of lemon, banana peels, and straw. Sharp hop bitterness, crisp malt. Drink pretty good for a Pale Lager.
