3.4 Nice golden pour, lots of hops, but abit thin on the palate, very nice hops, but could be better, I wish it was abit more resiny. pretty smooth.
3.6 Hazy golden color. Resiny aroma and taste, too unbalanced (1 point less), but still enjoyable for the extreme hop lovers.
3.4 22 ounce bottle poured into an English pint. Crystal clear on the lighter side of amber topped with a whipped cream white head. There is some visable carbonation and floaties. Upon further inspection, this beer is bottle conditioned. The aroma is a nice balance between Pine and citrus hops and sticky sweet malts. The flavor is balanced to the hop side, but not palate wreckingly so. Leaves a nice layer of resin on the tongue and a long bitter finish. Disappointing that this beer and brewery no longer exist.
3.2 Not even a quarter of the way through with number 10. I’ve already gotten my money’s worth. Then here comes Hopzilla to cascade through the quaint villa of Chinook. Oh, wait, those are just the hops that this is brewed with. To be honest, I was expecting something bigger and bolder. We were introduced to this as a Double IPA but it seemed from the get-go to be a bit too thin for a Double. It fits better into the regular IPA category. But, while hoppy, it isn’t really a monster with radioactive breath ready to fight a three-headed dragon.
3.3 A hazy orange beer with a thin off-white head. The aroma is sweet hoppy with a slight grapefruit note. The flavor is rather sweet, but OK hoppy and with notes of grapefruit, leading to a dry end. The hops just barely succeeds in balancing out the high sweetness.
3.3 Bottle. Hazy orange colour with a white head. Malty aroma with floral hops. Malty flavor and very hoppy. Dry and bitter hop finish.
3.6 Cloudy orange colour with a white head. Hoppy floral aroma with a light citric touch. Cramel malty flavor with a hoppy touch and notes of pineapple.
3.6 Bottle. Malty, floral hop aroma and a sweet malty, floral hop, dry taste. Medium body with a light bitter dry finish.
3.9 Bottle. Hazy amber coloured with a white head. Aroma of malts, caramel, hops and pine needle. Flavour of malts, caramel, hops and pine needles.
3.8 Pale orange color with a decent two finger head. Incredible hop / bud cousin pine resin smell. Medium bodied with a smooth mouthfeel. Nice malty grain taste with a relatively mild (considering the smell ) hop taste. Finishes with a tasty hop burp. A nice fresh hop taste here without being overly bitter. Very good.
3.2 Pours a murky amber with an off-white head. Quite bitter; in fact too bitter in combination with the relatively light body. Otherwize very nice hoppiness. Too bitter finish.
3.2 (Bottle 65 cl) Hazy amber with a small, off-white head. Fruity, citrusy hop aroma. The body isn’t overly full but dominated by an impure mash of hops. Very bitter finish. A somewhat inharmonious IPA. 270106
3.9 Bottled: Golden coloured. Unclear. White fluffy head. Herbal, flowery and grassy aroma. Some pineneedles as well. Flavour is well hopped. Loads of flowery and herbal notes. Some citric notes. Has a nice malt base, that stand up to the hops. Medium bodied. Ends on a citric, pineneedledense bitterness.
4.7 This beer is just drenched in hop character and is dripping with fragrant citrus hop aroma, intense citrus hop flavor, and mouth puckering hop bitterness. Not for the timid, Hopzilla is the type of beer who are big fans of bold, flavorful American IPA. It is one dimensional, but what I really love about this beer, is it really showcases the aromas, flavors, and bitterness of Cascade and Chinook hops. It isn’t so harsh and so bitter that it is not enjoyable, Hopzilla is a beer you would have no problem consuming a few pints or 22 oz bottles of. Hopzilla pours to a beautiful, slightly hazy deep golden color with a thick and creamy white head, and a lively carbonation. You know you are in for a hop assault because once you un-cap this one, like a fire breathing dragon, hop aromas blast out of the bottle. Very zesty and fragrant aromas of citrus(lemon and grapefruit) flood the nose. The palate on this beer has a firm base of pale malts, but malt character in this beer does not have a chance. What you taste on the palate is fruity/lemony flavor of hops. Hopzilla ends with more citrus hop flavors, then ends with a mouth puckering, zesty, citrus hop bitterness that lingers. Hop laden monster is as apt a descriptor as you can get. Hopzilla lives and breathes hops. This beer is an over the top IPA and at 90+ IBU, its the type of beer only someone who love hops is going to enjoy. I’m a hop head, so I knew I was going to love Hopzilla, but for those who don’t enjoy intense hop character, beware! This beer is a great beer to enjoy as an aperitif, or after work cocktail beer. It would also match with firery foods, but forget pairing this with anything that is not extreme.
3.6 Citrus aroma, fairly basic cascade. perfect color and head. Proper bitterness and flavor for style. A very non-complex flavor and finish compared to others, more of a session IPA if there is such a thing. Very refreshing and I look forward to having this on a hot day next to the pond.
3.4 Nice dry citrus palate. Not over the top but very much up there. A lot drier then most IPAs I have had. Medium white head goes slowly.
2.9 (22oz bottle) Hazy amber body topped by a medium off-white head. Aroma is medium sweet, orange, light caramel. Taste is medium sweet, grapefruit, some orange, caramel, light herbal. Watery medium body. Moderately bitter, but the hops seem to have mellowed a bit.
3.0 [bottle - 22 oz] Hazy amber pour with a thin and soapy head and some sediment floating in it. Rather odd for an IPA. Soapy and hoppy aroma. Some sweetness and citrus present underneath. Sharp and very bitter hop taste with a floral undertone and some slight sweetness. Very bitter aftertaste. All in all, a pretty run of the mill IPA.
3.3 Very hoppy aroma. Pours a golden blonde. The flavor was dry, with a good hop cripness.
3.5 Limited aroma, a light white head and a slightly darker golden body. The hops are very present in this beer, similar in quality to Stone’s Ruination IPA though less bitter. I am not sure about the 90+ IBUs, but I would rate it above 80 IBUs. If you like hoppy beers, this one will not disappoint.
2.5 Bottle: Poured a clear copper color ale with a small head with minimal retention. Aroma of strong floral hops is quite enjoyable. Taste is a weird mix between dry hops with weird sweet malt. I didn’t particularly enjoy the mix between the sweetness and the dry hops. I would have enjoyed more bitterness and a greater level of carbonation (the beer was almost flat). I wonder if I got a bad bottle or maybe this is just not for me.
2.2 pours a hazed brownish yellow with a nice yellow tinted white head.smells like vanilla with floral notes. gah, the taste is gritty raw grass. strong cascade notes. this ipa does not work for me. way too raw tasting. some lingering grapefruit but the grass flavor is dominating, too much so. an uncomfortable beverage that i will manage to choke down. but in the grand scheme it is better than a lot of beers out there, but there are a lot of bad beers out there.
3.5 Hops rule!. This IPA’s bitter, citrus-hoppy character is forceful in its impact. The remembered hint of grapefruit draws us back to this brew time and time again. We can’t remember what the hell this beer looked like apart from the noteworthy bottle, but we sure did like it.
3.8 The aroma was mangos, grapefruits, flowers, dark fruit, and a slight candy note. The flavor was orange zest, citrus, flowers, and a light fruit note. The beer poured a cloudy orange color w/ almost no head and good lacing. The mouthfeel was light and creamy w/ a huge bitter and a dry finish.
4.1 [22 oz. bomber] Pours a bright amber color, with a nice creamy head. Aromas are of hops, and some nice fruity notes. Flavors match the aroma, and hit you with a nice, strong bitterness and good citrus as well. I agree that this is under-rated for this website. [I think it might be because of the relatively low ABV]
4.1 Bottle. Interesting. This 90 IBU monster will make any person pucker. A brew for Ruination fans. Golden orange, clear, nice off-white head. Hoppy-fruity aroma. Has a combination citrus-piney note to it. Flavor is all about the hops. This is a hop-heads delight, so I am suprised that it only rates a 3.45 here. I can still taste the malt sweetness through the hops, yet the hops are massive in this brew. And they build as you drink. Yes. Ruination lite. That is the best way to describe this one. After all, Ruination has way more ratings, does it not?
3.5 22 oz bomber and a nice looking bottle. Pours a yellowish golden color with a small fading white head. Aroma is consistent with various citruses and flowers with a very slight piney hint. Taste is not bad, but could be better. Hoppy with citrus dominating, and a slight hint of that good IPA pine taste.
3.3 Pale gold, dusty/soapy head. Orange and pineapple lifesavers, other general citrus hops. Some caramel. Somewhat bland hop character in flavor, some caramelly malt which keeps it decently balanced. Dry flavor, a bit rindy. Not that bad though.
3.2 Pours a hazy orange body with almost no head. Aroma is bitter hoppy, alcoholic, and vanilla. I can’t believe this is a 5%er, it feels like at least 8. Horribly balanced in my opinion. Flavor is bitter, which is fine, but there is almost no malt backing the hops. The alcohol is extremely obvious. It improved slightly as it warmed, but overall this was a very blah IPA without a blah price. While I like the bottle and the figurine outside the bottle, I’m not a huge fan of what’s inside the bottle.
3.0 Thanks Dave! Pours to a super hazy orange body with a good oily white head. The aroma is a herbal, grassy, weedy, almost a little cardboardy. The flavor is also weedy, dandelion, light cardboard. I wonder if this is a bit old. The palate is very much hop oil and is medium bodied.
