3.5 Deep gold, hazy, thin white head. Aroma is very sour with over-ripe strawberry and pear, earthy, musty spice. Flavor: dry, biscuity malt, earthy leather, spiced apples, ginger, pear, cidery notes, minerals, moderately sour (less than in aroma). Very low carb.
4.3 19.06.2013, 0,75l bottle (#01008?) shared with Palme @ The Ginger Man NY: Small creamy mediumlasting head. Aroma is slightly rich, lots of sour red currants (kind of like I remembered my grandmother?s home made red currants juice), broth, grass, vinegar, heather. Taste is slightly sour grassy, red currants, grass, berry skin, minerals, sorrel, heather. Dry mouthfeel. Never heard of the brewery before, and had absolutely no expectations at all, despite good ratings. This was actually really nice, and being this old, I really wouldn?t mind more of this. 27.06.2019, 0,75l bottle (#00276?) shared with friends @ home: 6-4-6-3-11=3,0 Nice slightly bubbly-creamy mediumlasting head. Aroma is slightly sweet sour-ish grassy, unripe fruits, grass, minerals, hay, sorrel, weeds, fruit stones, oak, hints of sour red berries and mild vinegar. Taste is slightly dry sour-ish mineraly, sour grass, minerals, fruit stones, hay, bark, berry skin, weeds, paper, oak, soda powder, sour red berries. Medium bitterness, slightly harsh sour-ish mineraly mouthfeel. Fair enough. Interesting to try it again after so many years.
3.5 Grabbed this off shelf at Murrays Cheese. Pours a hideous murky swamp water color. Nose is tart and of fruits. Tastes tart of cherries, floral hops, woody, and ginger. Funky and easy drinking.
3.7 330ml flip top bottle. Pours a cloudy brownish amber with no head. Aroma and Taste of sweet malt, Belgian yeast, very fruity, some plums and raisins, slightly sour tart flavor. Palate is a medium body, light carbonation, mildly tart flavor. Finishes with Belgian yeast, fruity, plums and raisins, ending I’d mildly sweet tart and fruity. Overall a good drinking Belgian brew.
4.2 Bottle pours syrupy cloudy amber with quickly dissipating tan head. Farmhouse, funk, cherries, nuts, tangerine. Moderately sweet and sour. Lightly bitter. Full body is a bit syrupy and smooth. Very good.
3.0 Looks and smells like apple cider. Should be served slightly warm. Taste is slightly tart with a metallic sharpness. Quite drinkable and refreshing but not too interesting.
2.5 IPA? I don’t think so. The aroma is definitely funky and this has no head or carbonation. The flavor is bit sour and funky bit just not that good.
4.1 Pours a hazy cider brown with no visible carbonation.... A few big whiffs and Im getting earthy, sour cider, twig tea, cherry and a touch of lemon citrus. On the palate the journey continues with flavors of sour cherries, lemongrass, tart fruit, bitter earth and sweet malts really funk up the finish. Pretty great beer to sit and sip.
3.1 Bottle. Pours cloudy orange with a small head. Sweet and fruity aroma with a hint of tartness. Flavor is slightly tart with fruity citrus flavors. Lacks the hop bitterness I associate with IPAs. Very metallic finish.
4.2 2007 version - not an IPA; described as a Rousse de garde. Pours slightly hazed deep dark gold into a snifter. Off-white head with medium retention recedes to nothing. Sour summer fruit aromas. Sweet caramel upfront yields to sour pit and summer fruits before the dry, lasting bitter resin finish.
3.9 Huge vinous flavors with complex fruit, caramel-toffee, sour yeast and earthy subtleties. Again, a bit too much acetic acid, but I like it in this style of funky-fruit driven beer thing. Bottles have a high risk of oxidation, which will ruin the experience.
3.8 Bottle. Clear orange copper pour - I got the first glass off the top ;) - with pillowy white head. Aroma is pretty well dominated by lightly funky yeast notes, some peppery hops, the beer smells quite grainy as well. Barely any hop bitterness to speak of in the taste, tastes more like french biere de garde that is beginning to sour. I was actually surprised that this wasn’t any more sour than it was, we had the 2007 vintage. Palate is this beers strong point, perfectly well carbed and dry. Good beer but not mind blowing, unlike its price.
2.3 Pour is hazy orange with white head, aroma has notes of some weird cooked veggie, maybe some cherry, some sour cabbage and fruit, some slight bready sourness to it as well. Taste is definitely better but still has notes of some weird cooked fruit, definitely an untintentional sour with some plastic, phenolic tastes. Off for sure, but could tell it could be ok in 2006.
2.3 Bottle @ Dan’s house. Cloudy orange appearance with an off white head that disappears quickly. Dull, citrusy, white wine, dental floss nose. Mildly tart, sour, cherry, citrusy, dull hoppy flavor with some weird plastic fruit notes.
3.0 Bottle. Pours apple cider colored. Nose/taste of very bready malts, tart citrus, apples and muted hops. Moderate tartness. Medium body.
3.8 Poured a very hazy light auburn. Smells of cider and a little vinegar. Tasted like cider with vanilla and a cherry highlight at the end. The sourness is moderate and enjoyable.
Trocken, in sehr milden Grundzügen Geuze-artig. Langer herber Ausklang mit der selben milden Würzigkeit, die schon im Antrunk in gleicher Intensität vorhanden war. Vielen Dank an den Doppelbock für den gemeinsamen Test! 8/10/9/10/11/10
3.8 bottle. pours apple cider red-brown. Aroma is barnyard funk, sweet apple and sugar. Flavor is nice, cidery sweet with lots of funk. This is an IPA?
4.0 A careful pour produces a clear golden amber colored elixir with a thin bubbly white head that dissipates quickly but leaves a cap on top and some lacing on the sides. Smells of citrus and phenolics, plums, spicy yeast and funk. Taste is tart and fruity with a barnyard edge. Finishes sweet with a bit of astringency and leaves a lingering tart bitterness on the tongue. Crisp carbonation, sticky mouthfeel, medium to thick body. Nice little saison, bier de garde. Tart and fruity I enjoyed this one. If only it wasn’t so pricey.
3.8 Cask. Pours hazy brown with a big rich off-white head. Aroma is cheesey hops, herbs, funk, and light citrus. Flavor is slightly tart with citrus and floral hops and a caramel malt. Not sure what the hell this is but I liked it.
3.4 750 ml - 2006 A: Poured a hazy/cloudy ruby-ish amber color with a huge off-white head with amazing retention. Leads to a decent amount of lacing. S: very sour esters. Tart green apples, some sour citrus as well. T: This hasn’t mellowed much over the past year or so, and if it did it is too hard to tell. Very tart/sour which kind of destroys any flavors coming in. Mostly sour citrus. You can also taste the alcohol right behind the initial sours. M: Good mouthfeel, carbonation is a little too high. Very interesting palate, sours with a hint of sweetness. D: very interesting beer. Not quite what I expected but I look sour beers, and this one was very sour. I wouldn’t mind letting one age for a few more years. I think some time will mellow this one out.
3.3 2006 vintage, 750ml bottle. Pours a hazy, burnt orange with a creamy, white head. Nose is cheesy, spicy, brett, toast, herbs. Flavor is tart, cherries, lemon, herbs. Medium bodied, tart finish. Starting to mellow just a touch.
3.9 Hazy orange-brown pour with a white head. Tart aroma with caramel and nutty malt Tart fruity flavor with citrus peel, lemon, and pear. Bitter hop finish. Lots of oak.
3.8 small bottle. pours a hazy yellow color. aroma: light citrus, some sour notes, some hoppy notes. taste: light citrus, kind of thick unflitered texture that I liked, some fresh hop flavoring, nice clean finish
A déguster.
3.7 Draft @ redlight redlight. Brett on the nose with citrus and very floral. Pours amber with a solid white head. Tart and citrusy with floral notes, with a citrus blossom flavor, very interesting. Very complex with a lot going on.
3.7 Really? this is 6 years old? I had it on draft at the Thirsty Monk in Asheville in December 2010. Also - An IPA? Really? It was a really nice beer, don’t get me wrong, but I got a lot of fruity, slightly sour notes in the aroma and flavor, and not much hoppy flavors. Oh well, I liked it whatever it was.
3.1 Oh wow, really this old? Well, picked up a bottle - unaware of what it was. Poured a copper color, slightly cloudy, thick head. Yeast, spices, etc. Flavor was alright - though a bit spicy for my likes.
4.2 very interesting beer, citrusy sour complex and pleasant - had it at Redcoat with mussels and calamari, would highly recommend with seafood
3.9 Bottled. Looks like apple sauce watered down with no head at all. Aroma is all citrus and reminds me of that Norwegian IPA style, with other notes of sweeter grapefruit and lighter spices and malt vinegar. Flavors continue with the stingy vinegar and apples a little sour with only lighter citrus. Sour lasting after taste lasting. I must say this is one of the most interesting IPAs I’ve ever had.
