3.4 Bottle - Thanks Glouglouburp!! - Pours out thin and dk amber with almost no head...aroma is peaty scotch smoke, burnt wood, roast meat...flavour is all of the above, slightly medicinal and astringent, burnt peat moss and whiskey, sour tang of marinade...some cocoa and dk fruit hiding behind the smoke...smoked lovers obviously have a different experience with this than others do...quite interesting
3.8 Nice smokey dark malty nose. Light bbq mesquite. Pours dark brown thin foam rings. Smokey salty dry roast light chocolate is there as well, but a good deal of beef jerkey and salt. Nice sweet salty jerky stuff. Sweet smokey dark malts nice drinking strong smoked ale. My rating is too descriptive.
3.9 12oz capped from suzygreenberg. Dark brown, basically black in color with decent tan head. Sweet malty prune that is laying under a ton of smoked peat, wood, and meat. Tart prune up front with a large amont of peated smoke meaty malt and some light ashed chocolate malt.
3.9 Dark beer with mahogany hints around the edges when held to the light. The bubbles create a small slick on the surface, but it never really achieved a head. The nose is dominated by smoked meat and roasted grains. This is a very flavorful smoked beer, with lots of campfire, charred oak staves, and smoked ham along with some toffee sweetness, molassess and tea. Some mineral chalkiness in the finish. This is a very nice smoked beer for those who like smoke. Many thanks to Sammy for getting this beer for me.
4.0 Smoke owns the character of this deep, chewy nectar. Lots of molasses, coffee, toffee, and chocolate notes linger underneath the smoldering malt mayhem. Some say this one is the Lagavulin of beer and as it warms, more in your face flavor reveals itself. Not much to look at, this beer has little head to it, but the dull dark brown ureminds me of a weeklong camping trip with a lot of time by the old fire. Some mild lactic hints far off in the distance that gives it some semblance of balance, if not cheesiness. This beer was built to pair with sharp cheddar and salty crackers. All features of this beer bows down to the smoke. What a brew! Tres bien!
3.5 Pours a deep black with virtually no head and minimal lacing. Aroma is richly laced with a campfire-type smoke scent with a hint of dark chocolates and roasted coffee beans. Taste is quite unique, they have captured the essence of campfire smoke and incorporated it well into the chocolaty and coffee-like profile of the porter style. Body is on the thin side; feels lightly syrupy on the palate. Finishes with a smoky prominence and a light charcoal bitterness. Slight alcoholic heat at the end of each sip. Nicely done, I could easily have a few of these!
4.0 Pours almost black with minimal white head. Aroma of smoked meats quite overpowering. Leaves a thick lacing on the glass. Some carbonation with the mouth with caramel with the smoked meat. Spicy aftertaste left behind. Some alcohol in the taste, very well balanced. -Tyler
3.8 Bottle from RadioMGB, thanks! Deep dark brown color. Malt and beechwood smoke in the aroma. Malty flavor with peach. A slight tartness with loads of beechwood smoke. Peach, melon and pineapple in the finish. Lovely!
3.7 This smells like a beer version of Lagavulin. Very smoky. It’s hard to smell anything else under all the smokiness. Some molasses, minerals and maybe a little coffee and dark chocolate. I love the smell of Lagavulin, turns out it smells just as good in beer form. I literally dumped the bottle into my glass, after seeing that it wasn’t producing much head, and still got nothing. A stout without a head looks so sad. More of a dark brown in colour as opposed to a typical black stout. No lacing. I’m not sure what I think of this, I’ve never tried a beer so smoky. The feature here is definitely smoke. There’s a picture of a camp fire on the label so I’m assuming this is what they were going for! It really does taste like smoke in a glass. There’s a unique lactic thing going on as well, reminiscent of blue cheese. Molasses, minerals, even a little salty. The ABV isn’t perceptible. This is a funky beer. There’s even an aftertase of smoke...do they put liquid smoke in this stuff or something? I don’t know what to rate this, it’s cool but very strange. Decent feel. A solid medium body and lightly carbonated. I wouldn’t want any more than one of these at a time and wouldn’t want to drink it often either. The extreme smokiness is too much.
3.3 Bottle from a trip to Montreal. Pours a deep cola black with barely any head. Smoke is right up front on this, light malt and almost some oxidization behind it. Medium bodied, light old fruit and raisin flavors, nice char and roast, and huge smoke. More long lingering smoke on the finish.
2.8 341 ml bottle courtesy of a trade with Boutip. Pours very dark brown, not quite black, with a thin-moderate off-white head that completely disappeared in about two minutes and left no lace. Pleasant aroma that is almost entirely dominated by smoked meat and, to a lesser extent, wood smoke. The flavor is again heavily dominated by smoked meat along with a weird smoked fish flavor. There is a bit of a metallic twang towards the finish as well. I enjoy smoked beers, so that wasn’t the problem. It’s more the quality and intensity of the smoke that I have an issue with.
3.5 9/09/2009: Calumet Grand Chef "Triple Porter"... Aroma: Really nice deep, malty smokiness; smells very encouraging. Appearance: Deep chesnut brown color; clean but opaque; extremely thin crackly veil. Flavor: Hmmm... Initial taste reveals a sourish-acidic-burnt maltiness; some thin watery chocolate followed by a decent smokiness, char, roasted malt, Palate: Seems really thin for the style, but smooth. Overall: Truly a smoked beer? No. A "triple" porter? No. A fairly well-done porter or baltic porter-like beer? I can buy that? 341 ml bottle ( 7.8% alc./vol.) shared by alexsdad06. Thanks Brad! Rating #162 for this beer.
3.6 355mL courtesy of Glouglouburp. Pours a cloudy deep mahogany with a two finger, fizzy, creamy, tan head that has good retention and leaves some spotty lacing. Aroma is slightly sour with some cherry soda but then moves to smoked bacon and salted pork. Taste is a bit watery and thin but has a surprising tart, tangy quality. Oily, coating on the palate. Very enjoyable.
3.8 Bottle shared by alexsdad06. Poured dark brown color with an average frothy off-white head that diminished slowly with fair lacing. Moderate to heavy smoke, toasted malt aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy bittersweet smoke flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. My expectations where exceeded and this beer would go well with a cigar.
3.6 12 oz bottle. THanks Glouglouburp for my second "smoked." Pours dark brown with pretty much no head. Aroma is smokey chocolate, coffee, mildew, campfire. neat. Flavor is much the same with a slight bitterness to it. An interesting beer. The smokiness was enjoyable. The GF didn’t care for it. Would love to try more from this style.
3.9 Pours dark brown near black, very light head despite hard pour. Big meaty cured hammy aroma. Big smoky flavor. Without seeing the color, I would be hard-pressed to tell this apart from a Schlenkerla Marzen. Full-bodied, strong and hearty. Very tasty.
3.4 Bottle. Nice and smoky, pretty coffeeish notes as well. Some fruit, well balanced and rounded, but nothing really cries out to me with this one. Good, but falls short of great.
3.7 bottle, via trade with glouglouburp. black color with scaly foam, aromas of strong smoke, maple syrup, flavors of smoke, barbq rib tips, peaty, slight metallic, bitter finish
3.9 Bottled. A deep red beer with a thin brown head. The aroma has primary notes of chocolate, but also lighter notes of smoke, rope, and tar. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, beechwood smoke, and roasted malt, leading to a dry, roasted, and bitter finish.
3.5 Pours dark brown with minimal head. Aroma is very smoky, with notes of bacon, salt, and campfire. Flavor is quite nice- exceptionally smoky and roasty, very flavorful; unique and damn good.
3.6 Brown pour slight head. Aroma is loads of bacon and campfire with some salty, peaty notes. Flavor is also very smokey with certain bacon notes. sweet malt abounds with a touch of roast. PLeasant
3.7 Very dark brown pour with nearly no head. Aroma is loaded with (oddly enough) bacon, smoky peat, and an overall grand smoky and chalky nose. Flavor is very sweet with a backbone of bitter roast, and a definite smoky aspect. Sweet malt comes through as well. Palate is medium to full with very mild carbonation and a dry bitter malt finish.
3.7 Bottle thanks to glouglouburp! Rich brown with a small bubbly tan head. Nose of smoke, chocolate, light roast, and hints of fruit and minor alcohol with warmth. The flavor is more disappointing, mainly roasted malt with some minor sweetness. Thin, watery body, nice finish is bitter roast elements and some chocolate. The porter outweighs the smoked character here, but it’s balanced enough to remain enjoyable.
3.4 [2099-20090419] 341mL bottle. Roasted sweet dry wood aroma. Hazy, dark brown body with a quick creamy tan head. Smoky dry wood embers flavour with full roasted malt. Full body. Nice smoky characteristics. Overheard: "It’s beers like this I can appreciate a glass of but would prefer to cook with." (w/ jerc, others)
3.9 "Rauchy" Tastes like someone dropped my tripple-porter in the bonfire. Incase you didn’t check out the label this beer is smoky which is good, but it can mask the porter a bit.
3.8 A grand chef in Scottsdale gave this to me, hellbilly. Good smoked meats and charcole aroma. Black with tan head. Carbinated brew with a good powery coco and mild sweetness. Dry coco on palate good brew thanks Josh.
3.6 Smoked with peat. Moderate malt, and very dry. Dark brown color, medium palate. I really like the dry, smoky, earthy character of this beer.
3.4 2009-04-19. Pitch black body with a tiny brown head. Ultra smokey aroma, some nuances that I can’t bring myself to delve into. (6+) Flavour is similarly smokey, smoke has depth to iti, rich malty body is tough to pull out if like me you are smoke averse. (6+) Smooth medium to full bodied palate. (3+) Well made, just really not to my tastes. Bottle, close to a year old, c/o HogTownHarry
4.2 Bottle thanks to Daknole, I love this beer!!! Smokey yum yum. Nice wack of vanilla in the flavors adds unique character. Sturdy malt and assertive smoke. Perfect rauchbier flavors and great body. I could drink this all night long.
3.9 Glouglouburp with another beauty!! dark brown pour, small tan head. Smoke abounds mixed with some roast and chocolate. Reminds me of smoked fish dip. Flavor is smoked but not like liquid bacon. You can still taste the underlying porter and its good. Very good. Some good malt and fruits come through the smoke. Nice beer.
