Bièropholie Impériale Stout

2004 vintage, 7%abv.

2005 vintage, indicated on the top right of the label, 7.7%abv. Made for dark chocolate lovers. Should be tasted almost at room temperature with fresh strawberries and somebody to love.

2006 vintage, The brewery was momentarily closed, but a batch was made in another brewery. No marks at the top and 7.7%.

2007 vintage, Maniacs asked for a thicker version. Here it is. We are not responsible if your tongue stays black. 7.9%.

4.1 (bottle - 341 ml) Dark black pour with a ton of thick and creamy tan foam. Oddly sweet aroma, kind of surprising for such a dark looking stout. Some mild roasted notes come through. Flavor starts off with a good amount of chocolate and sweetness (candy sugar maybe?). The roasted aspect really comes up more at the middle. Doesn’t explode but slowly creeps up on you and overtakes the sweetness. Very carbonated but very drinkable with lots of dark malt and fruit notes. Big thanks to Chad for this one.
3.8 At Savvy1982’s tasting - Smells nutty, dark malts and of alcohol. Great head on pour, some lacing. Flavours of strong malt, coffee, some alcohol, much coffee later on in the flavour. Very bubbly on the tounge, tastes of coffee and alcohol in the end of the palate. Quite nice, heavy and thick, strong alcohol, too thin for the %, Too fizzy for thinness.
4.0 Thanks to Cole for the share. Pours a deep black with a small mocha coloured head. The aroma jumps out of the glass. Milk chocolate, coconut, ash, fudge and coffee. The flavor is dry and bitter. Baker’s chocolate, coconut, coffee, milk chocolate, ash, fudge and a long dry finish. Decent mouth feel Quite nice.
4.1 Bottle. Thanks to Cole for the share. 7.9% alc. No vintage indicated on the bottle, so I’ll assume this is the 2008. We opened this to ’warm up our tastebuds’ for the Hunahpu/Sexual Chocolate/Expedition/Marshal Zhukov madness that was to follow, but this beer showed that it could run with the big dogs! Pours black with a thin brown, quite persistent head, spotty lacing. Stains the glass, which is what I want ouit of an Imperial stout. Nose is tight and roasty, but opens up as it warms, showing black malt, chocolate, black licorice, graphite; Flavors run to the fudgy and flinty, very black chocolate, Bakers chocolate, bitter coffee. I think this beer is rad, and it’s a crying goddamned shame its not being brewed anymore.
4.0 Bottle 341ml. @ home. [ Trade by asheft ]. Alc. 7.9%. Initail sparkling, clear dark black color with a huge, creamy - with cheese holes, excellent lacing, fully to mostly lasting, light brown head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, molasses, dry dry aroma, moderate hoppy, tobacco, strang aroma yeast ? Flavor is heavy sweet and moderate to heavy bitter with a long duration, dark roasted, dark chocolate. Body is medium to full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20100509]
4.3 Pours a Dark black with a beige large head. Aroma of fudge chocolate with sweet coffee beans and a bit of dark fruit. Taste is bitter chocolate and a nice creamy finish. Overall very good!
3.1 341 ml bottle from a trade with fred82, shared with jessem. 2006 vintage. pours black with a tan head. sour aroma of soy and decaying black malt. the flavour shows more life with coffee and chocolate present but this one is on the way downhill. glad i got to try this brew but this bottle didnt hold up as well as i would have hoped.
3.2 Bottle shared with matt7215, his bottle, thanks Matt. I recieved this beer in two successive trades last year and both bottles broke, so it’s been a long journey for me to try this one. Pours a deep dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is strong on the soy sauce (which is something I’m never crazy about), with some mild chocolate and roasted malts. Flavour hits right away with the soy sauce, followed by some okay malts and then rounded out with some dry bitterness. It all has a bit of sour tinge to it though, which I doubt is intentional. Very thin-bodied for an Imperial Stout. Over-all not a bad beer but fell pretty short of my expectations, especially since this beer eluded me for so long. Didn’t expect my over-all to turn out so low but that’s just how the honest numbers added up.
3.8 341ml bottle from Rahman. poured into snifter. everytime i open one of these beers, it explodes with carbonation. pours a pitch black with a huge moka head. aroma is roasted malts and dark chocolate, taste is more or less the same. pretty low ABV for its style, but satisfies nonetheless. not a bad beer by any means, but i’m glad it’s now Simple Malt.
3.8 Remarkable coffee taste. It’s fairly strong and it’s obvious - there’s a hint of sweet alcohol towards the end. Good one!
3.5 12 oz. bottle - not sure on the vintage; pours oily thin and black with faint dark brown head along the edges; chocolate, alcohol, dank fruit and husky grains; texture is thin and mostly flat; fresh coffee flavors and dry, brown sugar; decent overall, though less than impressed
4.0 With great thanks to Blankboy a nice 2005B bottle. Jet black body with a chocolate mousse head. Beautiful. Aroma: Delicious fudge with chocolate, malt, creamy, slight alcohol, nutty and a smashing maltiness too. Flavour: Wow, bitter nuts, hops, malt, a lot of dryness and a bitter cream finish. Lovely.
3.6 Perhaps 2007 Vintage, Showing 7.9% abv: As soon as opening the bottle, a ton of carbonation comes out - fills the glass with head. Deep pitch black coloured body with a dense large brown coloured head. Aroma of grapes, yeast, bread, chocolate, cherries and a bit of a lactic character. Full-bodied; Assertive fake sugar flavour up front with a cherry and grape sweetness, fading to a creamy and almost milky taste. Aftertaste shows some alcohol, a ton of yeast and a lot of roasty flavours - but the coffee and chocolate comes out the most. Overall, a good and strong imperial stout - but perhaps a bit too sweet and yeastie for me. I sampled this 341 mL bottle purchased from Depanneur Peluso (Bonisoir) in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on 09-April-2009, sampled on the Eastern Shore of Virginia on 05-September-2009.
3.9 bottle from glouglouburp. Thanks again Dany, i’ve been really happy with all these Canadian biers. pours black with a tiny tan had that dissaptes quickly. leaves a tan ring around the edge of the glass and some galaxy looking designs on top of the beer. nice. aroma of roasted malts, dark chocolate, black licorice, molasses fo sho. flavor is bitter sweet chocolate and coffee concation. nice body. coats the mouth. dry finish or maybe i’m just a little high. Legit city
3.1 341 ml bottle, on sale at Marche Jovi, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass. Can’t be sure, but suspect this is from 2006. App.: Deep brown-black and a decent mocha head. Aroma: Lots of delicious black licorice and molasses, some dark chocolate and coconut/vanilla, light tang, milk chocolate, very rich and inviting. Palate: Medium+ body, moderately soft effervescence. Flav.: Unfortunately, this must be past its prime, there is a little of the nose, but lots of tangy organic acids have taken over, still a bit of molasses and licorice, but the more inviting chocolate and vanilla notes are gone; dry with a good deal of unpleasant sourness and a touch bitterness. I certainly have to get some fresh product.
4.8 Oh my god I could smell this all day! Cocoa, coconut, licorice, brownies, and some roasted choc malt. Incredible! The flavout is thick and satisfying, just an overload of roasted sweet buttery chocolate notes! Wow the look of this beer also rivals any American impy stout. Honestly I never thought an 8% impy would live up to the hype but man it sure does!
3.6 Black; big brown tan head. Quite sweet aroma - chocolate, coconut, licorice?; rather exotic, I can’t say I ever smelled an imperial stout like this. Flavor follows aroma. Higher than usual carbonation; some foam in the mouth. Tasty, interesting, would be better with the carbonation toned down a little.
4.1 bottle, via trade with glouglouburp, black walnut color with creamy brown foam, aromas of roasted marshmailows and chocolate, flavors are burnt coffee, roast malts, dark chocolate, bright carbonation, wonderful beer
3.6 0.34 l bottle at PBF, 7.9 %. Black color with fizzy very dark head (like rust). Thick sweetish, roasty and warming aroma with coffee, smoke and plum. Dry roasty, coffeish and charcoaly flavor. Too fizzy. Good aroma but the flavor is too acrid, feels like licking an ashtray.
3.6 (Bottled, 7.9% ABV) Almost black in color, with a largeish, chocolate-brown head, that fades very quickly. Aroma of licorice, roasted malt, and hints of alcohol. Very roasty, way too burned flavor with some acidity and quite high bitterness. Medium body, medium carbonation. A potent drink spoiled with too much burned maltiness. Probably better after a few years in the cellar.
3.5 Bottled. Pitchblack colour, mediumsized brown creamy head. Aroma is roasted malts, some slight coffee and mild notes of wood. Flavour is roasted malts, some sour wood, dark dry fruityness, mild coffeeish acidicness. Not very impressed with the flavour. Roasted and some sourish wooden notes in the aftertaste. Spritzy carbonation.
3.9 Black pour with a nice tan head. Nice aroma- sweet chocolate, roasted malt, vanilla, and even a hint of licorice. Not your average impy- dry finish, and some interesting bitterness, along with a bit of apricot nectar. A bit overcarbonated, which masks some complexities, but still a very serviceable imperial stout. Nice brew.
3.9 Impenetrable black pour, healthy tan head. sweet aroma, malty vanilla dry chocolate notes in the middle. Mouthful is dissapointingly overcarbonated, masking a lot of flavor. middle is nice and chalky with coffee and bitter chocolate. finish is great but initial overcarbonation lessens what would be a great impy
4.0 Black pour with one finger tan head. Aroma is sweet roasted malt, dark fruit, and vanilla. Flavor is a very dry semi-bitter, borderline chalky with some fruity, sharp sweetness sneaking in near the end. Sweet and somewhat creamy. Palate prickles with carbonation, with a heavy body and dry bitter malt finish. A bit over carbonated, but very enjoyable.
4.5 Now one of my favorite stouts. Best head I have ever had...on a beer. Very chocolatey and extremely smooth. Give me another!
4.3 Dark thin foamy chocolate head and midnight black colour. Chocolate malt aroma. Smooth, clean, malty chocolate, No bitterness. Easy too drink. Not as filling as you’d expect given appearance. Alcohol is blended in so well, you feel you can drink a 750ml no prob, oh yeah, I just did.
3.8 Thanks to Glouglouburp for the bottle! "I wanna see the sun blotted out from the sky" black with a thin dark tan head, oily soon after it’s gone. Nose has some bitter notes, mainly coffee and chocolate. Flavor has both plus some laid back fruit and quasi-brandy, almost like chocolate and brandy covered cherries. Moderate body, very smooth. Not wildly complex, but very pleasant.
4.5 Bottle thanks to Daknole! Rich dark black with an espresso head. Mocha-rich and coffee-like and filled with fruity delight. Dried cherries and creaminess with just enough acidity to keep it interesting. Yum.
4.5 Damn this is good shit. Thanks to Glouglouburp for this wonderful beer. Black pour with a small brown head. Aroma has great molasses notes, some salty scotch and chocolate are noticeable not only in the nose but on the tongue as well. This beer got better and better with each and every sip. Damn I wish I had more.
3.8 Une des bonnes Imperial stout disponible au Québec mais je la trouve un peu "watery", trop vanillée, très peu surprenante de leur part, après avoir gouté à laur trois derniers brassins, 06 à 08. It’s good, but maybe I like imperial stouts stronger in alchool, more powerful in taste, with less vanilla and with a thicker texture... Let me be mean... Is it an over-rated brewer? I don’t know anymore...ADDED: Just bought 3 six-packs of 2005b. Got thicker. And better. There’s still that yeasty Bieropholie taste as in Mackroken Flower or S but it is less agressive and more enjoyable. I raised the score a little...
