Big Boss Bad Penny Brown Ale

Big Boss Bad Penny Brown Ale

This dark brown ale is slightly sweet with a caramel and dark fruit finish. A show case of fine English malts, floor malted the old way. We use pale, chocolate, and crystal malts to produce a complex, but easy drinking dark ale. Very reminescent of northern English ales.

3.6 Draft @ CLT Hilton. Aroma of slightly sweet malt. Dark brown color, copper highlights, of white head with pretty good lacing. Sweet flavor, light malt. No bitterness. Fairly high carbonation lends it a medium mouthfeel. Not a bad example of English brown ale.
3.9 Deep, sticky nuttiness. Caramel malt, thick body. English toffee, a touch of hoppiness. Butterscotch. Underrated.
2.6 Decent English style with bready notes from a nice English Malt finishing with more caramel than brunt notes. The aroma definitely has a basement smell in the best way possible. Definitely sessionable.
2.6 熟しすぎたフルーツの香り 甘い… 苦さとさわやかさが欲しい
3.2 A nice brown ale Nutty flavor with a kind of sweet finish. Pours brown in color with a tan head. Actually easy to drink. Had at tin roof in Charlotte
2.8 Draft. Clear brown color, thin tan head. Nutty aroma with a bit of grass. Taste is grassy brown bread. Thin.
3.7 On tap at Nate and Nick’s in Bryson City. Nice roast nose. Well balanced. Bigger body than a lot of brown ales.
3.0 12 oz bottle. Bottled on 03/31/14. (Food Lion) Boone, NC. Clear reddish brown colour with a small light tan head. Toffee, malt, nutty dryness and some mild hops in the aroma. The flavour is toasted malt, nutty dryness and some chocolate. Brown Ale indeed.
3.3 Bottle at Ryan's house. Poured a clear brown color with medium sized head. Roasted malt, caramel, nuts, vanilla on nose. Medium light sweetness. Light bitterness. Caramel notes with all light bitterness. Pretty good.
3.8 12 oz. bottle. Dark brown, with a reddish hint and a small, tan head. The aroma is nice, light roast, oak, sherry, peat, and floral hops. Sweet and malty, with a light bitterness and some booziness. Medium body, creamy, a little acidic, and malty. This is an excellent brown ale! Nice, mellow nose, and good balanced flavor. Overall an approachable, complex, and delicious beer. I’m impressed!
3.5 Brown beer with a foamy tan head. Roasted grain nose with some brown sugar and nutty tones. Sweet beer with lots of brown sugar, dark toast and some tea flavors. Some dark fruitiness, a hint of spice and some bitter coffee finish it out. Pretty tasty brown.
3.3 Type: 12-oz. bottle Glass: Boulevard Ales pint glass From: Trader Joe’s in Ballantyne (Charlotte), N.C. Price: $1.67 (I think) Purchased: July 26, 2014 Consumed: July 28, 2014 Misc.: N/A Poured a dark red, almost mahogany color with 1-to-2 fingers of khaki white head that dissipated pretty quick. Minimal lacing on the sides of the glass. Minimal retention on the top. Light bubbles coming up from the bottom. Smelled caramel, toffee, roasted nuts, chocolate, espresso and some rye. Tasted roasted nuts, caramel, toffee, chocolate, espresso and hot cocoa. Medium body. Oily-to-creamy texture. Average carbonation. Long, smooth finish. Not a bad brown ale overall. It grew on me a bit as it went down.
3.1 Bottle. Pours a brown color with white head. Nutty, roasty, malty aromas and flavors. A touch light.
3.4 Brownish amber in color with a good head. Caramel, malt, sweet, bread aroma. Taste is similar to aroma. Nice brown Ale. Good beer
3.7 Bottle at chilis in Charlotte airport. Nose is sweet and bready. Vanilla and sweet cocoa like body with a hint of bitterness in there a la an esb. Good but not great. ---Rated via my mouth
3.6 Draught. Clear and brown, rather appealing. Bready malt aroma along with resinous hops. Earthy, woody notes in there as well. Flavor is medium bitter with a woody aged type flavor. Very smooth and drinkable. I would drink this again.
3.0 Tap: clear brown, with cereal malty aroma and a little musty sourness. Light feel with definite English malts and a finish almost similar to an ESB. Not bad, nothing special.
3.2 Bottle. Pours dark, murky brown. No head, just some bubbles in the middle. Smells sweet. Tastes sweet, hard to place. Very mild and drinkable. A very solid beer.
2.3 @ Whole Food Markets / Asheville NC --- Clear brown with a 1" head, sprays of lace. Taste is margarine and malt, not very appealing. Stays with the opening until a lightly bittered finish rounds things out. Very ordinary, not nearly as well done as the common brown ale. Not recommended.
3.2 Pours dark cola brown with visible carbonation at depth and a thick and creamy light tan head. Big lacing. Aroma is biscuits and toasted malts. Taste is sweet chocolate malt into burnt roasted grains. Some notes of buttery caramel and nuts. Pretty well-carbonated. A solid English-style brown ale.
3.2 Tap at Barley’s - Asheville. Pours clear dark brown with a small, fizzy beige head, short retention with light lacing. Aroma is roast and chocolate malt, dates and figs with earthy hops. Flavor is dark malt and fruits, medium hops and bitterness with a dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.
3.1 Glass at Barleys in Asheville. A lotbof red in the dark brown. More that is typical. Not a lot of aroma at all. Fruit is tasted with earth. Light molasses. Everything is light here. This would be a good intro beer but there is n Just not enough going on for me.
3.1 Bottle. Pours brown with off white head. Nose and taste of caramel, toffee, nuts, light smoke and molasses. Medium body.
3.4 Bottle - Toasted malts and cola. Clear bubbly brown with a thin head. Nice toasted malts, nutty and some light chocolate notes. Only a little over carbonated for my taste but overall pretty good.
3.1 12oz bottle from Lowes in Hickory, NC. Brown pour with a beige head. Aroma is muted nutty and caramel malt. Tastes are crisp nutty, chocolate, caramel and brown sugar. Ok.
3.2 A solid brown. Pours a beautiful amber with a thick white head. Smells like hazelnut. Taste is more like buttered popcorn, with a slightly hoppy finish. Had on tap at the Flying Saucer in Raleigh.
3.0 Meh. Pours light brown with small white head. Scent is slightly roasted but lacks complexity. Flavor is mild sweet and roasted. Writing more about this beer wouldn’t benefit anyone.
3.2 Bottle. Pours brown with small white head. Aroma is mild sweetness, no hops. Taste is smooth , light, thin, mild sweetness. Not too had.
3.2 On tap during a dinner at Wolfgang Puck’s. Aroma has that English biscuit quality to go with mild chocolate notes. Flavor has more caramel than expected, some mild chocolate and biscuit notes holding it up. The food was better, but this went well with everything.
3.2 This was on tap at the Bald Head Island Club. It was quite good for a brown ale as it was smoother than most, with plenty of roasted malts. Cola colored with little head.
