Big Horn Big Red I.P.A.

Big Horn Big Red I.P.A.

Brewed as a medium India Pale Ale, this full-flavored moderately hopped beer has the strongest hop character of our ales. Made for hopheads and new beer aficionados. The grist composition is 94% Pale malt, with the remaining grain bill consisting of carastan malts. The finishing Mt. Hood hop addition in the whirlpool gives this beer a good hop character without becoming excessively bitter. The beer is fined instead of filtered so the hop character is not stripped away.

3.3 Tap at the Schaumburg IL location. Slightly hazy golden orange pour with a very small head. Juicy citrus aroma and taste. Not super rich or complex, but quite serviceable.
3.3 "a nice solid ipa. bitter and aromatic. not overly exciting, but nothing bad either. well balanced and dry in the finish with a little citrus and a little spice and biscuit malt."
3.6 Sampler at Schaumburg. Far and away the best beer I had at Ram. Big grapefruit rind hop tones. Easy drinking, with a steady classic NW hop bill. Nice to end the otherwise lackluster sampler with. Right on.
3.3 Draft to taster at Ram in Indy. Looks solid; a transparent burnt orange with eggshell head. Smells solid; nice juicy hops with a medium-bodied pale malt backbone. Tastes like it smells, but maltier. Average on the palate. Solid, but it smells better than it tastes.
3.4 Draught in a flight at the pub. Pours a cloudy dark amber color. Nose has some nice hoppiness to it, with some grapefruit notes coming through. The taste was bitter, and had that same spiciness I usually associate with rye in there. Decent drink.
2.8 Draft @ Downtown Indy RAM Cloudy, brown/amber with a short, off-white head. Caraamel, pine aroma. Taste is the same....mild malt... Very mild overall, not a standout.
2.4 Enjoyed on tap @ Ram in Salem, OR with Erick 1-17-14. Flavor is fairly mild, some weak hops, some carmelly light malt. Translucent red with weak head. 5.5 BD
3.1 Pours a slightly milky golden yellow with a sparse bright white head. Notes of caramel and grapefruit. Definite flavors of ruby red grapefruit. Sour palate that lasts quite a while.
2.9 12/15/2013. On tap. Mostly caramel aromas with hints of citrus and pine. Light hoppy flavors, but way too muted. Caramel mostly. Color is amber with a white head. Pretty plain.
3.3 Pour on tap at the brewpub, clear red pour with thin slightly off white head, aroma brought notes of grass, slight orange, grapefruit in there mixing into some slight spice, nice caramel and toffee in there, a bit weak. Taste is a mix of red fruits, some caramel, toffee, slight vanilla into spice, nice orange peel, grassy notes, finishing fairly bitter.
4.3 Surprisingly good. Citrus forward with a fresh hop bite. Nice malt backbone. Recommended! A-
2.2 Pours murky dark yellow with a small white head. Smell slight juicy citrus. Taste bitter, thick, and oily Thicker bodied. One dimensional and boring.
1.5 This is not a red. Very Hop driven and flowery. Notes of soap too. Unfair for me to say since this sort of thing ain’t my bag baby.
3.6 Draft. Red brown pour with tan head. Spices and light hop aromas. Light hop flavor, but drinkable.
3.7 Growler from the RAM in Wheeling, supplied by ck1 to the Mom-without-Bill tasting. Thanks bro! Has a nice aroma, fruity and pine. The taste does not following all the way. Would have another.
3.7 On tap at Ram, Tacoma. It pours an unclear, dark orange body under some off-white to light beige head leaving curtains. Lots of pine cones in the aroma, not much maltyness kicking in. Fruityness and a touch of peaches too. Full body, pleasant carbonation. Quite dry, with a nice bitterness in the flavor, both initially and in the end. Some maltyness to back it up. Certainly a nice IPA, well worth a second and third glass. 130629
3.0 Straw body with amber tint. Light caramel notes with some weak crystal and milled grain. Minimal sweetness with fruit notes. Light citrus and maybe a touch of pine. Very pedestrian but nothing offensive.
2.9 Draft at shaumburg. Aroma is mostly hops, grassy and floral. Taste is light nitter. Meh, nothing super special here. Drinkable but boring
3.7 Sampler at the Schaumburg RAM. Okay, maybe it’s because I’m chatting with the friendly brewmaster, but I’m really liking this stuff. That and the fact that a sampler "Curl" is $5, no matter how many samples are on it, and I have 10! So this is a derker amber color, and still has a good layer of foam although it’s been on the bar a while. Again, my nose was hampered by a cold and restroom soap, so just a general yes on the aroma. A large pine and resin hop note that swims to coat my soft palate. In other words, a hop goblin.
3.0 On tap at tulalip ram restaurant. Decent ipa with a mild balance of caramel malt and piney hops, from a hazy gold body.
2.7 Hazy orange yellow color. Not too red in appearance. Sticky white lacing. Mild lemon peel aroma. Slight earthy palate. Lingering bitter finish yet balanced. Not what I would call a red IPA but nice overall.
3.0 On tap at C.B. Potts Greenwood Village location. Pour is clear amber with a big white head and great lacing. Somewhat faint aroma - grass, caramel, bread, a touch if grapefruit peel, and earthy hops. Taste is very malty with a hoppy bite on the finish - spicy/dirty hops, light lemon, orange peel, perfume, toasted bread, and biscuit. Medium body with low carbonation. Below average IPA that could really benefit from some dry-hopping.
3.0 Hoppieat ram beer but not choppy. This one is light. Some citrus. Low bitterness, caramel.
3.3 Poured into a pint glass on tap. A dark amber red with very little head. Not much in terms of aroma. Medium hoppiness. Somewhat weak for the style. There is an unpleasant aftertaste that hangs in your mouth.
3.2 Decent ipa out of ram brewing. Very deep amber in color and has a nice amount if hopps and has a nice bitter taste.
2.6 Tap. Pours clear amber with thick, frothy off-white head; short retention and some lacing. Aroma is grassy and floral hops, cereal and caramel malts, dates, light woody notes, and light pine. Flavor is grassy and pine hops forward (medium bitterness), toasted malts, dark fruit esters, and light caramel; dry, bitter finish. Medium body and low carbonation.
2.4 On tap at Schaumburg location, pours a clear light brownish red with no head, the aroma is of older hops and malt, the flavor was really off to me, the hops seemed very faded and old and was more sweet than hoppy, really didn’t work for me.
2.9 On tap at Big Horn in Salem. Mild IPA. Good tasting brew but light bitterness. Weak finish.
3.8 On tap @ C.I. Shenanigans in Spokane. Medium amber, thick head, great retention. Very piney, vegetal hop character, nice malts without being overly sweet or sticky. Tasty.
3.1 Solid American IPA with spicy hop profile. Some resiny notes but little fruitiness. Nice clarity in the gorgeous auburn beer. Deep side of the tongue bitterness that fades with a slick mouthfeel.
