Big Horn Buttface Amber Ale

Big Horn Buttface Amber Ale

The most complex of our beer line-up with a combination of five different malts and four different hop varieties. Buttface has the broadest popular appeal of our beers. It has a high malt character and lack of evident hops. This surprises people because it is easy to drink, but has a higher alcohol content than what is perceived.

2.7 "the most boring beer in the six beer sampler. toffee malt is nice, but the hop presence is barely noticeable and there is little balance. no need to try again. pretty standard amber."
3.7 I keep a keg in the garage and drink 2-3 beers each day. I like to drink with large swallows spaced about 5 minutes apart. Given these personal peculiarities, I enjoy this beer more than most
3.5 Poured from 12 oz bottle into pint glass Appearance: a sudsy off-white head slowly dissipates with nice lacing. Color is a deep amber with plenty of streaming carbonation. Aroma: rich roasted barley malt, a hint of coffee, some fruit and some mild herbal hops. Mouthfeel: light and watery, slightly astringent and a somewhat dry finish. Flavor: medium roasted barley, caramel, raisins, earthy and herbal bitterness. Overall: a pleasant and drinkable beer, represents the style well.
3.0 Sampler at Schaumburg. Chalky grey-brown body. Classic 90s brewpub style amber. Big chewy malt notes. Meh.
3.1 Draft to taster at Ram in Indy. Looks decent; a completely transparent copper with very thin eggshell lacing. Smells and tastes mildly sweet and malty with notes of caramel. Average on the palate. An underwhelming example of ghe style.
2.3 Draught in a flight at the pub. Pours a clear dark amber color. The nose on this was extremely light - I had to let it warm and swirl it around to get anything off it, and even then I only got some slight caramel notes. Taste was slightly toast. Overall, this was wholly inoffensive and unremarkable.
3.1 Draft: at RAM, downtown Indy Clear, deep wet copper with a small, off white head. Caramel, nut aroma. Caramel malt, fruit, earthy, likeable mild bittering. Pretty good and straightforward.
2.6 12/15/2013. On tap. Amber color with a white head. No surprise here. Caramel aromas with light malt. light fruit, caramel and malty flavors with a semi-sweet finish. Nothing remarkable.
2.9 Pour on tap at the brewpub, clear red pour with thin white head, aroma is caramel, toffee, spice, toasted malt, hints of grass, slight touch of grain, hints of earth and biscuit notes as well, pretty decent. Taste is a mix of caramel, toffee, slight grass, hints of spice, finishing earthy, dry. Eh.
2.7 Enjoyed from On tap at the Ram brewery/restaurant in Salem, OR. This is an alright amber. High marks as an amber but definitely not a "red". Moderate malts, nice and smooth. Solid amber, light red in color. The head is a nice thick white foam. 5.8 BD
3.2 Clear Amber with an off white head. Smell creamy caramel and a bit of toffee. A bit of citrus up front, smooth grass and caramel after. Light bodied, easy drinking. Good
3.4 Good overall color and head. Average aroma. More a classic Amber than a Red Ale, more malt than hops. Still balanced and roasty. Good with a Steak and Mushrooms. One of the Brewery’s two best for me.
3.1 On tap at Ram, Tacoma. It’s a pale amber colored beer topped by a small, off-white head. The aroma is a tad buttery, and too much on the toffee side for my likings. Some pleasant malts and fruityness too. The flavor is pretty much the same, but with the added joy of bittering hops. Medium to full body, pleasant carbonation. Well, it’s not foul in any way, it’s just not my kind of amber. 130629
3.1 Deep amber hued body with a thin white head. Light sweet grain notes with caramel hints. A bit watery. Some light bourbon notes.
4.2 By far I think this is the best beer from Big Horn. Everytime I get a chance to go to C. B. & Potts I get this beer. They have good burgers also.
3.5 Dradt taster at RAM, Schaumburg. Brown beer with plenty of light edges. No foam after I’ve gotten to it on the sampler tray. American hop notes finally come through my stuffy nose. Yet it’s the malt that leaves the first impression on my tongue. Followed by a tangy caboose of bitterness. Pleasing fruity esters keep the hops from taking over.
2.4 Draft. This one was pretty bland. A little caramel and not much hop presence to speak of. Pass
3.1 Clear red orange color with little lacing. Lots of caramel on a mild nose. Good body for an amber. A little funky on the finish but not a lingering pungent feeling
3.0 Amber with a white head. I get a lot of toffee and caramel, as well as some nutty notes. Very dry. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Not too good, but about as good as it gets at Humperdinks.
3.5 On tap at C.B. Potts Greenwood Village location. Pour is clear copper with a small white head and decent lacing. Bready, caramelly, slightly roasty aroma - lighter notes of grass, biscuit, and straw. Taste is lightly toasty, caramelly, malty, earthy, somewhat floral, grainy, and cereal with a light bitter finish. Medium body with low carbonation. This is not a bad amber at all.
1.4 Watery repaid amber ale. Light grainnress. Some off flavors like rubberish.
2.4 Tap. Pours clear, light brown with thin, fizzy off-white head; short retention and spare lacing. Aroma is light caramel and cereal malts, dates, light floral hops, and maple syrup. Flavor is lightly sweet malts, some dark fruit esters, light floral hops; bland throughout. Medium body and low carbonation.
3.1 good layer of yeast at bottom of growler, taste better with yeast stured up, my growler to go was a little flat , but still good ,
2.4 On tap at Schaumburg location, pours a clear dark brown with no head at all, the aroma is of old malt and caramel, the flavor is very bland with just a little bit of sweetness in the finish with some caramel, ugh, not good.
3.0 On tap @ C.I. Shenanigans in Spokane. Medium tea-coloured amber, no head. Sweet fruity caramel, low bitterness. Alright.
2.6 Nice malt profile but lacking enough hop zing to carry ot. Pours nice light brown and sports a delectable pillowy mouthfeel. Needs some bitterness to balance.
3.2 On tap - dark amber with a big creamy head and some lacing. Has a nice malty caramel taste with a medium body. Finishes creamy smooth.
2.6 Served on tap at Ram Brewery, downtown Indianapolis. Very dark amber. Strong caramel flavor to the point of almost being overbearing. Would be good with a hamburger or perhaps grilled chicken. Seemed mass produced. Enjoyable but I don?t think I?d order this again.
2.9 Not much for aroma. Straight amber in color (always a good sign for an amber :) ) A light malty flavor with apple peel notes in the taste. A very enjoyable amber, which I don’t usually like! Notes: Pub visit during ’09 GABF
2.4 Dark amber red pour with minimal carbonation. Faint aroma of malt. Sweet and lightly hopped taste with a sticky mouthfeel. Sweet malt aftertaste.
