Big Sky Bobo's Robust Porter

Big Sky Bobo's Robust Porter

According to Montana legend, deep in the expanse of the Bob Marshal Wilderness there lives a small band of rugged and ferocious.... Chihuahuas.
Bobo is the packs’ Alpha Male, and in a word he is ROBUST.
So naturally we thought he deserved his own delicous Robust Porter.

A small bottle with big flavor! Brewed with 6 different malts & generously hopped. Robust doesn’t really begin to describe this beer. Smooth chocolate flavors with hints of coffee, caramel, and vanilla. Hop presence is copious and is matched by rich malt flavors.

Malts: Pale, Crystal, Chocolate, Brown and Black, Roast.

Hops: East Kent Goldings, Challenger.

3.8 12 oz bottle poured into a shaker- poured a nontransparent solid black color when held to a light source, creamy 2mm head formed with several frog eyes that lasted for several minutes and had some lacing upon the vessel. Aroma of a darkly roasted malt, some Maxwell House Colombian that I reheat in the morning, and some chocolate. Hits the mouth with a nice wide body, malt was on the edge of burnt but it works, middle holds up very well, finish is acidic, smokey, and lasts. ’Bout time I had a damn beer!
3.3 Chocolate and roast malt inkiness, medium kilned cereals add some toffee / caramel touches, mild phenol spice and faint dark fruit esters at play. Toasty, malty, semi-sweet balanced by restrained bitterness. Medium body, creamy and soft mouth feel. Malt sugar coating, carbonation froth and acid washing makes it quenching. Nice sub-6% porter.
3.5 Very dark brown with big beige head. Lots of coffee in the aroma with some caramel and chocolate. Roasty tasting with plenty of coffee flavor sans coffee bitterness. Medium body.
3.7 Draft at Jaks. Black color with off white/tan head. Chocolate aroma. Nutty and burnt wood and cherry notes. Cocoa and coffee too. Delicious for having low ABV as well.
3.1 Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, brown, mostly diminishing. Body is black (almost opaque, flashlight tested). Aroma is moderately malty (chocolate syrup, roasted grain), with a note of vanilla. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, watery/syrupy texture, lively carbonation. Very simple rendition, kinda typical Big Sky quality. Chocolate syrupy, not much else going on. Bit too sweet and kind of syrupy mouthfeel, so it’s not very exciting by itself. I’ve had some success blending with Avery Out of Bounds, since that one is way more roast-heavy, bitter, and hoppy, so they complement each other pretty well.
3.5 No head. Smells like dark cherry, malt. Burnt caramel, not too sweet. A little disappointing on the finish.
3.5 Bottle. Pours dark brown with tan head, settles fairly quickly. Thin lacing. Aroma is toasted, toffee, caramelized malt, nutty. Flavor is roasted, toffee, caramel, with a very mildly hoppy, roasted, nutty finish. Soft to moderate carbonation, medium body, smooth texture.
3.6 Jet black pour, toffee colored head. Nose is coffee.. Bittersweet. Medium mouth feel. Middle is chocolate & malt. Finish is burnt malt, dry. ABV listed on the bottle is 5.8%.
3.1 Dark black brown pour. SMell has cocoa, coffee, peat, earth, herbs. Flavor is dark fruits, earthy spice, cocoa. Not bad.
3.7 The appearance has an opaque very dark brown color with a medium light tan head, and the aroma is a belnd of roasted and caramel malts. The taste fuses a mild umami, slight sourness, and slight sweetness, and the palate has a medium body, slick texture, malty and robust finish, and a soft carbonation.
3.8 Bottle. Near black with a quickly fading light brown head. Strong aromas of roasted malts, with coffee, earthiness and toffee in the background. Tastes pretty much as you would expect from the aroma with a short lingering of the earthy bitterness. Body is medium to heavy with a watery feel pierced by fine carbonation.
2.7 A lil’ small-ass forty wit whack-ass flavor! Y’all KNOW dat shit, muthafucka! Robust don’t straight-up begin ta describe dis brew n’ shit. Right back up in yo muthafuckin ass. Smooth chocolate flavors wit hintz of coffee, caramel, n’ vanilla yo. Hop presence is copious n’ is matched by rich malt flavors. mellow.
3.7 Deep and dark, semi sweet chocolate and roast grains. Thick brown foamy head. Aroma is soft and sweet, taste brings the bitterness, and lingers on the palate, like melted chocolate. A keeper.
3.7 12 oz. bottle share thanks to Emily. Appearance: half finger of brown head, diminishes quickly, black, not much lace. Aroma: roasted malt, orange citrus, chocolate, Palate: full body, average carbonation, creamy texture, medium bitter finish that lasts for a few second. Taste: bitter sweet dark chocolate. Overall, very good, good balance on the nose, little bit off-kilter in the taste. Very solid in summation.
3.6 12 oz bottle from Evergreen Discout. Black appearance, tan head. Roasted malts, chocolate, toffee, vanilla, light coffee and earthy hops. Medium sweetness and bitterness, nicely balanced. Medium body with a rich finish. Pretty tasty.
3.5 Bottle - black, fizzy pour, kind of looking like cola - aroma of cocoa, tobacco, light smoke, earth/mushroom, prune, light mineral - texture is a little watery, but the flavor is pretty good - moderate chocolate sweetness, with a balancing bright acidity that washes through the middle - a touch of earthy English ale yeast - finish is lightly bitter, with a touch of Burton-ish bite - pretty true to style robust porter - nice beer.
2.5 Bottled late December, 2011 Pours brown with a fleeting peanut head and some residual bubbles on the rim afterwords. Smells like a standard porter with dry malts, hints of coffee and soil with some nutty character. The flavor is a bit simple to me with a dry dusky coffee flavor and some hints of unsweetened cocoa powder. There’s a certain emptiness to the body and moderate on hi carb - this is missing the mark on mouthfeel for the style IMO. Overall, this is a porter that I could drink, but am not likely to choose over the other porters in the region. Serving type: bottle 02-06-2012
4.0 On tap. Almost black color with a brown top. Nose is rich roasted malts. Flavor runs from coffee to chocolate with roasty notes and some earthiness and sweetness. Nice
3.6 Those one poured a medium brown with a beige head.Aroma was lightly burnt malt, dark chocolate, and some earthy hops. Flavor was similar, light soy and fudge character too. Pretty nice porter.
3.4 Bottle. Dark brown with golden highlights. Quite a chocolatey porter, with some breadcrusts and caramel flavours too. Not a lot hop presence, but I’m not sure about the age of my bottle. Satisfying.
2.9 Bottle with thanks to Owen. Pours a very dark brown with a creamy light tan coloured head. Aromas are not overly apparent. Somewhat sweet with some roasted character. Flavours are much the same. Initially kind of sweet before some roasted grain on the finish. Thinnish mouthfeel. A little underwhelmed to be honest.
4.1 So this guy poured a solid motor oil with off white head. It smelled of sweet chocolatey coffee and tasted much the same. It’s body seemed a little thin for how rich the flavor was, but overall a really enjoyable beer. I’d have it again for sure. As with most beers I really enjoy out of the bottle, I’d want to give the tap a go!
3.3 cola with fading tan head. Aroma/flavor are light roastiness/coffee, a light-to-moderate dose of neutral sweetness, making it resemble a milk stout, some bittering hops. Other than this, the beer did not make a lasting impression. I don’t think it should be termed a "robust" porter. The body was light than I would have liked, and the flavor should have been fuller. Meh.
3.9 Pours a dark brown color, tan head. Smell is very roasty and chocolatey. Taste is much the same, roasted malts and chocolate. Smooth creamy mouthfeel, I like this beer a lot one of Big Skys better regular beers.
3.5 12oz. bottle. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, light fruitiness and faint caramel and vanilla, along with burnt sugar and smoke in the background. Black in color with a lasting, fine, uneven, tan head. Flavor is roasty and full of dark chocolate sweetness throughout, with suggestions of coffee and black bread, some herbal, earthy, spicy hop flavors and finishing with a moderate dosage of drying hop bitterness and lingering roasted malt character. Appropriately sharp and effervescent on the palate with a medium-full body. This is a pretty tasty and true to style Robust Porter, certainly worth a try for any fans of the style.
4.1 One of Big Sky’s best releases. Very rich porter with a dark malty finish. Rich in flavor but not much of a top.
3.9 from the Big Sky sampler pack, pours black with a medium creamy tan head. Aroma is big mocha and roasted malts with some burnt sugar as well. Flavor is big, roasty and dry with lots of dark coffee and semi-sweet cocoa. Very dry finish. Top notch porter.
3.7 Beer pours very dark brown with a tan colored head. Aroma is very roasty with nuts and chocolate. Taste is sweet with a bitter finish. This is quite a delicious beer. Good job Big Sky!
3.6 Bottle. Aroma of coco and roasted malts. Gorgeous pour: black color with a nice tan head and bad ass lacing. Tastes as good as it looks, flavors of dark chocolate, coffee, with a crisp resin finish. Alcohol is hidden very well and it’s smooth on the palate. All in all, this is truly a robust brew, don’t pass it up!
4.1 This beer is like a fine dessert with an Irish coffee! love the flavor of dark chocolate roasted coffee bean. It pours with a nice thick head that stays a while and also has very nice lacing. I definitely recommend trying it’s very delicious if you like dark roasty malts.
