Also called “Monk’s Café Flemish Sour Red Ale”

We blend young and old beers to make this mildy tart sour ale. Light bodied with a lactic/sour nose and a bit of sweet and sour in the finish. Very refreshing!

3.1 (Monk's Cafe) Dark reddish brown liquid with thick tan head. Very carbonated and lots of small bubbles. Heavy lacing. Odor of sweet malts and cherry. Taste is very sweet; very similar to Concord grape juice, though a bit more tart. Thinner mouthfeel with dry finish. I'm impressed they managed to get this taste, but I can get grape juice here cheaper than this.
3.8 圆润的酸啤,有些类似伯爵啤酒,甜、厚重、refreshing
3.4 75 cl fles. Donker amberkleurig/bruin bier met crème kleurig schuim. Geur: licht zuur, melkzuur, wat rood fruit. Smaak: licht zuur, melkzuur, wat zoetigheid, wat hout, licht fruitig, bessen. Medium koolzuurprikkel. Afdronk: wat droog, licht zuur.
2.9 Oct 23, 2019: A small bottle from Liberty in east Vancouver. A dark reddish brown beer with moderate tan head and a fruity sour nose. It's sweetly sour on the palate. Too sweet and lacking in flavor. It's okay but only just.
3.9 Sweet and sour, delicious red ale. Fruity mouthfeel, dry, very drinkable. Balanced.
3.7 can. listed as "Monk's Cafe Flemish Sour Ale". Fantastic red sour, pretty sweet and carbonated - very solid
3.5 Home. 75 cl bottle. Tasted as Monk's Cafe Flemish Sour Ale. Clear nice rubbish red beer with a brown foam layer. Aroma not to much but light sour and red fruit. Taste is small sweetness, fresh red fruitiness sour which became a little more. Somewhat sour dry. Good balance.
2.2 Keg at The Gulden Draak, Prague. Deep ruby with an off white head. Aroma of tart fruit, vinegar and cherry ade. Flavour is initially very sweet, then a metallic note, then back to sweet. Not so good.

3.3 Bottle from Willems in Grobbendonk as Monk's café Flemish sour ale. Pours a beautiful burgundy, red, big, frothy, light mocha head. Aroma and taste strawberries, sour gooseberries, acidic sourness as well as a more warming lactic acid, a little sugary underneath too though. Not bad but for me this is a bit off rather than a tasty Flemish red.
2.5 Draft @ Trollekelder, Gent - as "Monks Cafe Flemish Sour Ale". Reddish very dark brown, creamy beige head. Acidic Flemish red, artificial sweetener, chemical. Light body, low-medium carbonation.
3.9 Bue en pression sous l'appelation Monk's Café au Trappiste à Caen (14) Nez de vinaigre rouge. Robe d'un marron sombre. Mousse légère. Goût fruité, vinaigre de vin rouge, fraîcheur de raisin.

3.7 Pours clear sepia with a thick, frothy and persistent beige head. Aroma yields tart and sour pomme and tropical fruit plus a hint of fresh malt. Flavor delivers tart cherry, sour fruity, subtle malty bits, a whisper of bitter hops. Texture provides good body and peppy fizz. Those lucky Belgian monks.
3.4 02.04.2015, 0,25l bottle (1995 vintage) @ Man in the Moon: Nice slightly fizzy-creamy mediumlasting head. Aroma is mild and slightly dry, very mild vinegar, soda powder, sugar, oak, sorrel, red berries. Taste is slightly dry sour-ish, grass, oak, very mild vinegar, cherry stones, weeds, berry skin, soda powder, minerals, red berries. Medium bitterness, slightly dry mineraly mouthfeel. Nice enough, way better than expected.
Ligeros aceticos y dulces. Cuerpo medio con bastante sabor. Fresco. Bastante buena. Para repetir.
3.5 Monk's Cafe version, from Don G. - Nice accessible sour. Massive meringue like head. Non specific tart fruitiness with a nice malt sweet backing, a little pleasing funk.
4.3 Cloud brownish pour with some reddish orange at the edges. Beige foam that clings to the glass. Caramel and sweet malt in the nose but with some acid and maybe some saline. The acid / sour taste dominates the first taste and the sweet maltiness comes toward the end. Some dryness in the end, the sour flavors dominate, appropriately so. April 2012
3.3 Pours hazy dark coppery, topped with smaller tan head, not lasting. Gentle soury nose, vinous with some mild vanilla and some berry fruits. Puckery sourness. Vinous and almost slightly acidic. Dry finish. Lighter body. A bit too acidic, but not too bad.
3.0 very bizzare beer. its not quite sour, tastes more like a cheap raspberry Popsicle. body is very light and soda like.
3.2 I
4.1 Taste: complex, tangy dark fruit, some sour, tart, berries, bread, drinkable. Same with the nose. Deep reddish mahogany hue, semi clear, delicate head. Medium body.
3.2 Bottle as Monk's Cafe Flemish Sour Ale. BB 21.10.2018. Dark, brownish with hue of mahogany, big fat creamy head. Lovely dry woody and kinda red winey character, juicy, a bit of brown liqor notes, easy to drink, light on the palate. Not as sour or acidic as I was hoping.
3.9 5.5%ABV. Flanders red. Poured out red. Nose had aromas of acetic acid, green plums, pickled vegetables. The mouthfeel was juicy with active carbonation. Flavors were acetic sour, green plums, tart Granny smith apple. Preserved plum finish, ume, dry. Overall, very complex and pleasant, almost like a Burgundy wine.
0.5 After recently exploring many sours and goses, this is by far the worst I’ve had. It’s not really a sour but more of a tank ale with little flavor other than a weird after taste and no real sourness.
4.1 Bought at La Bodega for $11.99, Monk’s Cafe Flemish Sour Ale is brewed by Brouwerij Van Steenberge. The aroma of figs, plums, and cranberries are sensed on the nose. The appearance is a dark amber hue along with a tan head that dissipates quickly. The alcohol content is 5.5%. Figs are tasted immediately on the take. The figs are followed by juicy cranberries and pomegranate. Cranberries are pronounced in the sour and tart finish. Pomegranate is felt upon the mouthfeel in the finish. Sour apple is felt upon the mouthfeel and its crispness is stronger in the finish. Plums round out the sweet complexion and adds some weight to the drink. Raisins are easily recognizable in the finish. Caramel is noted in the finish and when you lick your chops. Monk’s Cafe Flemish Sour Ale is a lovely sour and tart beer. The cranberries and pomegranate dominate the flavor, while the plum and raisins play second fiddle. The sour apple is the jewel as you start tasting it more. Wonderfully complex, this beer is tasty and keeps giving from drink to drink. Cheers. Prost. Drink for the love of beer. For more beer reviews, visit my blog “Drink For the Love of Beer.”
2.8 330ml bottle as "Monk's Cafe Flemish Sour Ale". Clear deep chestnut color. Huge size, thick tan head, stays. Metallic, sour, fruity, minerals in aroma. Sour, fruity, sweet, bit dusty in taste. Acidic, fruity in aftertaste. Sharp acidic bite. Feels watery. Drinkable brew.
3.3 Bottle (from alcostock). Pours deep ruby brown with beige head. Aroma is sour, fruits, burnt sugar, oak. Flavor is sweet and sour, metallic, fruity, red berries, caramel. Overall: ok.
3.5 Bottle. Clear brown liquid with a cream-coloured well-lacing head. Aroma: fruity, somewhat acetic, dark malts, dried fruit. Light to mefium body. Soursweet aroma. Caramel, burnt sugar, vinegar, dried fruit. Dry, lightly bitter and tart ending. Not bad but not of best balance imo.
