Heavily hopped, it has aromas of grapefruit, white grape and tropical fruit. Warm and fairly bodied, bitter but balanced, complex and persistent, its palate shows its character. It finishes with balsamic and resinous notes.
After watching the trailer of the movie “Machete” 4 years before its showing, I was sold on creating a beer to honor him. Not any beer, only one could bear the weight of such a name: a Double IPA. I have always been fascinated by well brewed Double (or Imperial) IPAs. These are far from easy beers to brew. Limiting the caramel amount, achieving a good dryness, making sure that the higher alcohols are not overpowering are some of the key elements to avoid an undrinkable “sludge”. Above all, hop has to emerge over everything else, powerful and imperious.
This is an extreme beer, either loved or hated. It has no middle ways, middle ways are not for Machete. Machete doesn’t come to compromises. “Machete don’t text”. 18°

3.6330 ml bottle at home, bb. 13.08.2018. Pours a hazy light orange color with a white head. The aroma is hoppy, very catty, blueberry, some peach - along with some pale malt. Medium-full body with a soft carbonation, a light sweetness and a medium to medium-heavy bitterness. The flavor is hoppy with notes of papaya, mango and peach, overripe grapefruits along with some biscuits. Overall hop forward but not fresh enough.

2.5tap@ Open Baladin Roma (in shaker even when I asked for tulip) Appearance: golden, thin white head Aroma: weak citrus, grapefruit Taste: grapefruit, citrus, a bit sweet, Bitterness: strong a bit harsh, long lasting Mouthfeel: medium dense Carbonation: medium Overall: High IBU IIPA, fruity but a bit heavy..somehow too cold, so aroma may be not representative (after got warm it was decarbonated, so only slight improvement occured)
3.7Tropical fruits, mango, passion fruit, sweet malts, bread, caramel, honey. Hazy gold, medium, creamy, white head. Light sweet. Very juicy tropical fruits again, more ripe mango and passion fruit, soft carbonation, medium bodied, bitter and dry finish. Nice IIPA, not terribly complex but nice tropical fruits in the aroma and palate. Keg at Italian Job, Elephant & Castle.
3.8Tap. Good, if simple and straightforward strong IPA. Gold pour that doesn’t really stand out. Plenty of hops though, will well-masked alcohol. Very drinkable and solid.

3.9On tap at the Italian Job, London, UK. Really nice, well balanced beer with a bitter clean finish.
4.0Loved this. Plenty of fruity, perfumey hops, but all very delicately and without brute force like so many Double IPA’s. Balance!
3.9On tap @ Open Baladin, Rome. Pours slightly hazy bronze with a big and frothy head. The aroma features a strong punch of American hoppiness: citrusy and resinous notes and some tropical fruits. Taste is medium to heavily bitter; very hoppy with citrus fruits, especially grapefruit, and resin rising. The palate is medium-bodied, slick and smooth; excellent drinkability. Very tasty and refreshing. Predominantly hoppy and fruity DIPA, no residual malt sweetness.

Buona double ipa.
