BJ's Tatonka Stout

BJ's Tatonka Stout

Combined with its full-bodied richness, this symphony of flavors is what makes Imperial Stout the ultimate sipping beer. BJ’s brewers don’t hold back in their interpretation of this classic style.

3.7 Draft at Allentown. Pours turbid black with tan head. Nose was roasty dark malt, molasses, chocolate. Tasted rich, dense on the tongue, with notes of dark malt, chocolate, coffee, and hazelnut.
3.6 Full and rich and hoppy. I recommend this beer it tastes good thank you for asking
3.6 Aroma: coffee, chocolate Taste: rich flavor of coffee, chocolate, prunes. Roasted malt in the aftertaste. Bitter. Lovely nitro stout
3.9 Rich and creamy, deep brown pour with an excellent beige lace. Milk chocolate nose. Sweet and chocolaty flavor. An ample dose of hops lend a bitter but mildly unfolding finish. Lingering roasty bitterness. Quite good.
3.1 Tap at BJ’s, Austin. Dark opaque, good creamy brownish head. Very light toasted aroma. Medium-bodied, smooth. Coffeish, toasty malty flavor. Easy but clean mouthfeel. Impy for beginners.
3.2 Nitro. Pours black with a creamy tan head. Malty with an earth hop aroma. Flavor is a sweet caramel malt with milk chocolate with some mineral notes and an earthy hop finish. Creamy mouth feel.
3.5 Draught at BJ’s Clearwater location, on January 30, 2017. Clear dark brown to black color, dense tan lasting head. Sweet, malty, light estery, alcohol taste. Alcohol, estery aftertaste. Medium full mouthfeel, medium low bitterness. Malty, sweet scent.
3.0 On tap BJ’s, JAX. Chalky vanilla roast barley aroma with a little dark chocolate. Opaque black with hazy garnet highlights under a lasting, ruddy beige nitro head. Sweet vanilla flavour with faint red fruit accents and a dark chocolate finish. Overly sweet and with barely any bitterness to balance. Medium light body, smooth, low carbonation.
3.1 Quite sweet. Marshmallow, lightly roasted coffee, whites chocolate. Minimal hop bitterness. Pretty average
2.8 Tap at Charlottesville location. This is an imperial stout? Pours not quite black - definitely can see through it. No smell. Taste is... somewhat unpleasant. Liquor, some chocolate, some coffee. A little sweet.
3.0 On tap @ BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse. Pours a dark brown with a thick creamy tan head. Thick and creamy body. Lightly bitter malt flavor. Nothing special. Not that enjoyable.
2.9 On nitro at BJ’s in Covina. Thanks work. The pour is a typical nitro pour but as it recedes it gets light and more of a ruby tinted dark brown. Thick khaki colored head and good lace. The aroma is heavy on the malt. There is a light sweetness to it and a bit of metallic to take it out. There is a decent amount of alcohol here. The flavor is not that great. There is a bright alcohol up front l followed by a bitter roast and a lingeringly sweet chocolate malt. It’s definitely not really what I was hoping for. The mouth feel is thin and watery with a light carbonation and a lingeringly metallic chocolate aftertaste. This could be a lot better.
3.3 Very dark with a nitro tan head. Creamy and full, char and roasted malt, a good bit of cocoa, and some coffee. Fairly heavy body, one to drink slowly.
4.2 Draft in a flight at BJ’s in the North Hills of Pittsburgh. Probably a lot better than the low ratings indicate, and was really pretty good, especiallypaired with the All Night Burger.
2.8 Draft in a flight at BJ’s-Florence. Nitro. Pours a cloudy brown color with a cascading beige head. Light in color for the style. A soft, frothy cap of head lasts. Notes of nuts, chocolate, soap, chocolate milk powder, and residual sugars. Medium-bodied, with medium soft carbonation and a gritty, sweet, mildly bitter mouthfeel. Tastes like a first attempt at an imperial stout with a homebrew extract kit. Odd.
2.9 Draught at the restaurant in Sunvalley shopping mall. Long lasting grey brown head. Very dark color. Dry malty aroma with chocolate and boiled vegetables. Sweet chocolate taste but lacks caramell taste. Small body for a 8.5 % important stout. Small to medium bitterness.
2.5 Dark brown. No real nose! Creamy, slightly bitter, cardboard. Not a lot of flavor for an imperial stout. Creamy.
3.7 Sampled on draft at the Pittsburgh location this beer poured a black color with a large creamy beige head that lingered and left excellent lacing. The aroma was toasty malts, vanilla, malted milk, coffee and cocoa. The flavor was vanilla, coffee, cocoa, toasty malts, malted milk and a mild bitterness. Long finish. Moderately full bodied and creamy. Quite nice.
3.5 Draught at BJ’s Dublin Ohio, US. Very dark brown almost black with a tanned head. Nice aroma of coffee, roasted malt and some sweet hints of something which I cannot define. In the flavour it became obvious that the sweetness I discovered in the nose is sweet dried fruits and I suspect it also to come from the yeast. It is a stout but has relations with a barley wine with a bitter twist. Special beer Indeed
3.6 4-5 oz pour on draft at BJ’s (Gainesville, VA location) with a Mustang Sally yelling DCLawyer. Dark brownish black with light tan head. Aromas of caramel, coconut, light whiskey. Tastes of caramel, chocolate, cocoa. Medium body with a dry finish.
3.5 Draught. Very malty, dry, with a light roast flavour. I got on with this, though it lacked the complexity of great imperial stouts.
3.2 On tap in Daytona Beach FL. Pours essentially black and opaque with an excellent head. Ruby highlights at the edges when in bright light. The head is exceptionally creamy and durable. The aroma has an unwanted but not very unusual sour note. Partially hidden alcohol. In contrast, the flavor has negligible sourness and obvious alcohol. Its moderately bitter. Some faint coffee and chocolate. Overall: disappointing
4.1 Sampled at Richmond location. Should note that they don’t brew here. Pours black, decent tan head. Aroma is a big shot of chocolate and espresso. Flavor matches. Really rather enjoyable, a very solid imperial stout, with a focus on malt components. Slight pepsin. Nice stuff.
4.7 Maybe they don’t brew this wonderful beer the same everywhere but, in the Phoenix area, it is very good. One of the best brews I’ve ever had .
2.6 On nitro tap at the Fort Collins location. Black appearance with a frothy, lacy tan head. Decent aroma of chocolate, earth, and dark malts. Similar flavor, but just tasting dirty and off overall. Lighter, thin body for the style. No.
3.6 Draught at BJ:s Restaurant and Brewhouse, Brea. Black beer with a nice lasting beige/brownish head. Roasted chocolate flavor, cocoa, tar, dark chocolate, coffee notes, some salty licorice. Roasted coffee and dark chocolate flavor, cocoa powder, licorice, some raisins. A bit from fullbodied, but i like this.
3.1 Draft. Dark brown with frothy tan head. Nutty malt aroma. Flavors of dark fruits and roasted malts. Full body and strong alcohol kick.
2.5 Draft at bjs. Zero aroma, strange. Looks like a stout. Creamy yet thin. Metallic aftertaste. Not very good unfortunately
3.6 At BJs in Boulder. Didn’t say nitro, but it clearly is. Light aroma worth a very smooth taste. Taste is good, but not super interesting. Clearly well made though.
3.0 21st May 2015: BJ’s Laguna Hills outlet. Part of an eight glass flight. Last and strongest beer of the eight. Looked fine, ruby hue to the dark body with a good tanned foam blanket on top. Malty and smooth feel to the brew, however the alcohol is not hidden too well as the malty flavour is not deep enough to carry the 8.5% ABV. Thought the beer OK but preferred the PM Porter to this in their dark beer selection.
