Black Diamond Rampage Imperial IPA

Black Diamond Rampage Imperial IPA

We didn’t want this to be Jagged Edge on steroids. Thus rather than using the same hop combination, we chose more fruit forward hops to balance out the alcohol in the beer. The medium crystal malt adds a very subtle color and sweetness.

Nugget and Millenium hops are used to bitter. Citra is a new variety to the market that has some similar properties to Simcoe but a more pleasant fruitiness; pineapple/mango aromas mixed in with pine and cat’s pee. Centennial brings candied orange and Amarillo adds big grapefruit.

The liquid in the fermenter is dry-hopped three times- each dry hop equal in weight to the dry hop of Jagged Edge. This multi-stage dry hopping is meant to layer the different hop aromas.

The beer is fermented cool to suppress fusel alcohol development, and dextrose is added to allow it to attenuate out highly, leaving very little residual sugar. The idea was to avoid that syrupy "gumsmacker" effect that’s sometimes found in Imperial IPAs. Other than barrel aged beers, this is by far our most labor intensive and expensive beer to make. Rampage fans are legion and we believe they deserve nothing less than the very best we can give them.

3.3 Pours dark orange with medium head. Aroma: ripe oranges, pine tree, some biscuits. Taste: pine, biscuit, citrus. Nice long palate. Refreshing and ABV well hidden.
3.4 355 ml bottle. Pours clear golden color with a large white head. Resinous aroma, piney, quite malty too, orange and mild mango on the fruit department, hops have already died out a bit here sadly. Flavor is sweet mango and strawberries, mild orange notes, resinous hops, caramel malts and lots of bitterness. Alcohol is fairly well hidden, unfortunately seems to be slightly too old, a bit too sweet too. 6424
3.1 Hazy amber color with beige head. Aroma has sweet tropical fruits like tangerine, ripe peach, overripe pineapple and also sweet malt. Taste starts with sweet malt, some fruity hops, but also some nasty stale note I get with some sips. Medium body with low to medium carbonation. Overall it’s not really bad but it has some off-flavors and it’s also a bit boozy.
3.7 Beautiful amber colour, fine white head that dissipates rapidly. Aromas of grapefruit, mandarin orange. Taste is sweet up front and then the bitterness kicks in and lasts. Great, great texture. Just thick enough to let you know it’s serious but not too rich. Well done.
3.4 Wazig blond met weinig wit schuim. Geur: hop, kruidig. Smaak: mandarijn, bitter en redelijk wat suiker. Volmondig. Matige koolzuurprikkel. Afdronk: bitterig en zoetig.
3.7 4th July 2016 Hazy gold - amber beer, small pale cream colour head. Palate is smooth and mildly viscous. Decent fine carbonation. Sweetish malts, a little cream. Resinous tangerine, citric peel. Mild hop spice. Well buried tropical fruits. Light finish. Good fruity spicy linger. Nice one.
4.3 On tap at Hop hop street food Erba. Clear copper, cream orange head. Full body and fully aromatic, well balanced fruity aroma with hoppy bitterness. Tropical fruit and caramel, pineapple, mango, pink grapefruit.
4.0 Flarra i hemmet. Doftar ladugård och ja ok då även katt piss. Tung doft. Smakar då? Ja inte nåt med Mjaau här. Fyllig tung känsla i munnen. Tallbarr åh gran samt grape åh lite persika . Ja sen kommer lite trä. En fyllig Dipa med rejäl fräsch efterbeska. Bör testas igen då biran väl kall.
3.8 355ml bottle. Cloudy, orangey, pale golden colour with small, frothy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Citrusy, tropical fruity and grassy hoppy aroma, notes of passion fruit, mango, blood orange, hints of resin and weed, a touch of pineapple. Taste is citrusy fruity hoppy, slightly papery-chalky and sweaty resinous, notes of lemon, hints of grapefruit, a touch of passion fruit and pineapple, caramel and crystal malty basis; lasting bitter finish, perfectly hidden alcohol. Very intense but seemingly light and dangerously drinkable as a "simple" IPA.
3.8 Bella imperial davvero, soprattutto equilibrata. al naso bella profumata, e al palato non troppo amara; si lascia bere.
3.5 12 fl.oz bottle. Pours slightly hazy deep orange golden colour with a huge most good lasting off-white head. Aroma of apricot, some resins, bitter hops. Taste of bitter fruity hops, apricot, peach, some citrus, long medium bitter finish.
4.1 One label on the bottle without informations about the hops or malts or drink temperature. Wouw, fruits in the nose, orange clear beer with a small head, very hoppy, citrus, light bitter, no sweetness, the alcohol does not dominate, (I have a 0.35l bottle with batch Lot.No 0014 and best-before date 09/2016)
3.7 Sample at Delirium Brussels, shared with Mathieu87. APPEARANCE: darker blond beer. NOSE: fruity, grapefruit, bit sweet. TASTE: hoppy, fruity, grapefruit
3.8 Not a really strong aroma but so complex, Plenty of stone fruits, some tropical Juice ( pineapple, papaya, passione fruit ), acerb Peach, piney too and grapefruit. Reddish color with thin, white head. Sweet bready malt, a lot of tropical fruit, then Tangerine, resin, grapefruit zest, a lot of citrus bitterness. Smooth, full bodied with oily mouthfeel. Sticky on the palate, soft carbonation
4.0 Tap at Hoppy Loft, 4th February 16. Aroma pretty full, pine and citrus. Taste is bitter citrus, pine, full bodied. Enjoyed this one
4.0 Orange with a thin white head. Sweet floral nose. Medium bodied and smooth crisp and very well balanced crisp hop finish
3.9 Ottima Imperial IPA. -- rated with beerbasher/winphone
3.4 Copper pour with smaller off white head. Nose of pine and citrus. Flavor is grapefruit with hints of sweet citrus. Finish is dry with some bitterness.
4.0 Hazy golden color, big white head. Nice hoppy aroma with not so nice glue traces. Musty bitterswert hoppy taste, caramel and marzipan finish. Creamy texture, medium to full body, soft carbonation. Expected more. //stellabeer2go
4.6 Pineapple, mango, tropical punch. Super aromatic Imperial IPA, low bitterness. Can’t find the booze. Darn good
4.3 Colore Ambra quasi arancio, bella torbidezza, schiuma minima. Bel l’aroma floreale ed erbaceo, bene le note agrumate, eccellente al palato con un ingresso luppolato molto preciso, sentori di fiori e spezie. Finisce sempre amara, bene l’alcol. Ottima dipa.
5.0 Love this beer! California-style Imperial IPA. Huge citrus aroma, light-bodied for the ABV, drinks way too easy. The hop blast in my nose always makes my head spin in the best way ever!
3.8 Bottle from Safeway in Redwood City, CA. Aroma is tropical fruits, pine, marmalade. Taste is candied orange peels. A touch too sweet overall but not cloying or syrupy.
4.0 Bottle, 650 ml from Vrutak, Zagreb. Pours orange, medium white head. Piney fruity aroma and flavor. Solid caramel malty backbone. Sweetish with bitter dry finish. Better than expected.
3.5 Fantastica birra, profumi fruttati molto accentuati, frutta tropicale e citrici a sprazzi. Al gusto molto amara a chiudere con un piacevole inizio dolciastro fruttato. A tratti anche di ottima beverinita. ---Rated BY Italianbeer85
3.4 Thanks Ribafish for sharing this with us at Pivoteka! Misty amber body. Aroma... orange rock candy, malt, slightly stale. Taste... herbal, bitterish, some rock candy, ok, nice, not overbearing, not as stale as it seemed initially. I could believe that this is very very good fresh.
3.2 Bottled 650ml. -from Vrutak Zagreb. Cloudy Orange/golden coloured, minimal off-white head, grapefruity hoppy nose with notes of caramel. Swet malty, caramel, candy sugar and light grapefruity hoppy with notes of wood and alcohol. Dry bitter sweet finish. Not more than 6 weeks before BBE date, so I need to try it fresh because it’s obvious that real hop character fade away.
3.5 Amber colored, a bit hazy, creamy medium off white head. Aroma is of sweet caramel malt with floral, tropical fruit hop notes. Taste is very sweet pale and caramel malt, biscuit, medium floral and tropical fruity to grapefruit hops aroma and medium bitterness. Dry finish and sweet aftertaste. Medium to full bodied, resiny, medium carbonation. Too sweet and malty for the hops to get the attention they deserve.
3.9 Bottle, shared at poker night. Hazy medium orange with a creamy off white head. Big resinous hoppy aroma and flavour, oily texture, long bitterness. Malts give it a bit of sweetness. A solid DIPA.
2.5 Bottle. A frothy monster. Exploded from the cap, hinting at some imperfection. Indeed, at first quaff I get a sense of funk I don’t want in this style. It’s a meaty beast to be sure .. rich with caramel malt and beefy hop backdrop. But it tastes homemade. (#5935, 2/27/2015)
