3.6 473 ml can at the Only Cafe. Pours a cloudy orange colour with average off-white head. A roma is wheaty with coriander and a bit of orange zest. Flavour is gently toasty wheat with coriander and some subtle citric zest. Average body. Nice. Earlier Rating: 8/21/2009 Total Score: 3.2 On tap at Volo. Pours a slightly hazy gold with good sized white head. Citrus, grains, and slight spice in the aroma. Citrus seems a little more pronounced in the flavour though still moderate with grains and spice also present. Decent refreshing beer.
4.2 Beat The Heat, this more that does that perhaps my new fave local wit. Tasty fresh. and @ 4.5abv I can drink a 2nd . Lots of citrus, great colour and head. Nicely done Black Oak
3.7 Can from the LCBO. Not sure if this is supposed to be a Belgian-style wheat beer (as it says on the can) or a Saison (as it says here on RB, and in some of the promo material I’ve seen for the beer), but to be honest, it seems like it falls somewhere in between. The sunset orange colour is too dark for a wit, but fine for a saison. The aroma has the orange and coriander notes expected from a wit, but also a peppery edge typical of a saison. The flavour leans more towards a wit, but with a stronger sweet orange character, and a yeasty dryness to finish. So what style is it? I’m not too bothered, really - it’s just a nice summery ale. Earlier Rating: 7/7/2004 Total Score: 3.6 Hazy golden colour with a small head. Nose is invitingly yeasty and spicey. Palate is full and refreshing. Flavour is fruity and spicey, with a strong orange/curacao profile, and hints of corriander and pepper. A wonderful summer quencher.
3.6 Bottle in Brew Box. Dark clear yellow with fine bubbled dense head. Aroma if straw and lemon. Straw and lemon flavours. Touch of bitterness in aftertaste, mild malty backbone.
3.5 Bouteille 660ml, gracieuseté de msjpearson, Thanks Mike! Couleur orangée trouble, mousse beige pâle laissant une dentelle baveuse. Arôme de levure, pelure d’orange, grains de coriandre, céréales. Goût de levure, céréales, pelure d’orange. Carbonatation moyenne-élevée, corps moyen.
2.8 Fairly standard North American saison rip-off. A bit too sweet for my liking considering the style.
(Rating #6378)
2.6 A murky orange, with an active white head pour. Aromas are funky, with vegetables, woodiness, and bitter nuts. Not pleasant. Tastes are more of the same, with a hint of coriander and citrus fruit peels. Better than a macro, but falling way short of most craft brews I’ve had.
2.1 Can’t believe I new rated this one. Golden yellow colour. The aroma is a little strange, yeast and esters there is but there is a certain funk, like zucchini bread or another vegetal note with brown sugar sweetness. Not a fan of the aroma. Medium bodied note, some sugary texture and a fast finish. Not impressed.
3.4 Bottle from LCBO. Amber with an off white head. Light hop, orange zest, white pepper, ginger, wheat and yeast. Moderate+ carbonation and mild body, slightly sweet, so so.
3.5 650 ml bottle from LCBO. Pours a orangy colour with medium white head. Aroma of orange, spices. Taste is same + wheat. Pretty refreshing beer.
3.3 Bottle - 650ml. Cloudy orange body with a fading off-white foamy head. Fresh hoppy aroma with malty, orange, coriander, and flowery hints. Its good malty/hoppy taste carries grainy., herbal, coriander, and citrusy notes. Ends with a decent bitter/herbal finish. Enjoyable.
3.4 Bottle from LCBO. Musty yeasty spicy aroma with plenty of orange. Taste is sweet, with orange, wheat and spice. Nice, but a tad too sweet and orangey. Still a quality beer.
2.6 I’m pretty disappointed by this. Black Oak makes some good beers but this just falls short of expectations and other beers in the style.
3.3 Pale orange with a nice white foam. Very pepper/coriander, some citrus and a little herbal. A little bitter, mainly in the aftertaste. Slick texture with a liively carbonation, quite not enough dry.
3.6 Pours orange yellow with a small white ring. Aroma is orange, yeast and wheat. Taste is wheat, malt with a touch of orange zest and spice.
3.6 Bomber from the LCBO, under "Black Oak Saison" now (not summer). Pours a clear golden-amber colour with a frothy white cap, good retention because of very active carbonation. Gets a little hazy at the next pour. Mostly orange aromas from the zest. Citrus notes, honey and pepper. Pretty much the same for the taste, but milder. The wheat comes out in the finish. Pretty good overall, but missing a little balance to be a nice Saison.
3.3 22 oz bottle at the Hart House Craft Beer Festival, served in a tasting glass. Pours clear amber with a small white head that fades to a thin remnant and leaves a small amount of lace. The nose has big Belgian spice, with citrus, soft hops, earth and pale malts. The flavour is lightly sweet with a moderate spiciness and subtle hoppiness. The finish is lightly spicy with malts and earth. On the palate it is medium in body with a milky texture and soft carbonation. Overall, a decent, but somewhat simple, saison. Light and refreshing for summer, but not overly complex. 2014-07-31
3.4 Bottle - Citrus, fruity esters and spice. Hazy gold with a rich white head. Light malts, light fruit and some citrus, with a bit of yeast in the finish. Basic but nice.
3.3 Pours amber with next to no head. Nose of hops, honey and roasted malts. Bitter hops, with the same in the aftertaste, honey flavour, malts, and citrus on a long draw. Meh. Aug 26 2016. So apparently I was on some crack when I had this a couple of years ago. Probably part of a few drinks because I don’t remember this at all. I don’t know what all that talk of hops is, since this beer doesn’t have any. Beside that the Meh rating stands.
Fiche technique Style: Saison Format: 650 ml Taux d?alcool: 4,5%
2.9 Makes for an ok witbier. Pours orange/straw with limited head and very little lacing. Nose is yeast and orange. Flavours of yeast, orange peel, some light cereal. floral. Taste is light sweet and light/medium bitter. Medium body with lively carbonation and a pretty dry finish.
2.6 Bomber from LCBO, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass. App.: Clear orange-amber with a decent, frail white head. Aroma: Floral, earthy coriander, light citrus, wheat/bread/yeast, dusty, more Wit than Saison. Palate: Medium-ish body, fairly full carbonation. Flav.: Dusty, floral, wheat, bread dough and yeast, earthy coriander, light citrus, still Wit more than Saison; dry with mild bitterness and a dusty, floral, coriander, yeast finish. Fairly drinkable. Misses the mark for style by quite a bit.
3.1 2014/06/17 - Pours a translucent orange/amber colour with a fizzy, off white head that quickly dissipates. Aroma is orange, biscuit, yeast, earth tones and a hint of funk. Taste follows nose; orange citrus, yeast, biscuit, mild caramel, spices and a touch of funk. Mouthfeel is thin and watery with biting carbonation and a tart, drying finish. Not very exciting.
3.3 650 ml bottle from the LCBO. Smell is mostly mild citrus, with some faint funk. Pleasant tast, fruity, slight farmhouse funk. A bit minty and some caramel malt coming through. Would like it better if it had more barnyard funk to it.
3.4 Clear yellow orange with a decent white head. Aroma is orange, peppercorns, hint of white wine. Medium-light bodied, slightly fruity on the palate with a crisp dry finish. Taste is orange zest, spicy Belgian yeast, hint of dry white wine.
3.2 From a chilled 650 bomber in a Leffe chalice A> Light wheat aromas, citrus, earthy and biscuits. A> golden, slightly hazy, head was not as pronounced or frothy as expected. T> slightly spiced, light sweetness, a hint of sour finish. P> medium body, fizzy with a lingering woody finish. O> a decent if somewhat underwhelming saison. Easily drinkable but was hoping for something more lively. Would recommend to those newly trying the style.
2.6 On tap at The Round Venue in Kensington Market, Toronto. Poured straw yellow with thin white head. Faint somewhat sour aroma. Sharp somewhat thin palette and considerable carbonation. Sour, lightly citrus taste with bitter finish. Not happy with this.
3.2 Late summer pour on patio at Rhino. Not my favourite Black Oak offering. I get fresh cut wood, spring flowers & old tea bags on the tongue.
