A Different Breed Of Amber Ale

Black Sheep Ale is a full flavoured premium bitter with a rich, fruity aroma. Brewed using generous handfuls of choice Golding hops, it has a perfectly balanced bittersweet, malty taste with a long, dry and bitter finish. This beer was the first, and most successful, of all of our bottled beers.

3.5 Bottle (50 cl) from systembolaget. Clear amber, medium off-white head. Bready and nutty malt, earhty hops. Dry, medium bitterness.
3.0 Pours a copper color with white head. Light cardboard aroma. Crisp malty flavor. Notes: bottle from the Brit Shop, Jun ‘21
3.2 Old rating from 2010 - 500ml bottle, pours amber with a off white head. Aromas & tastes of dried fruits, bread, biscuit, caramel, wood , herbs & malt. Medium body. Light bitter finish
3.2 500ml Bottle in a Tankard. New style copper label. A deep, clear amber colour with inch head. Aroma of English malt and faint woody notes. Taste- Bread dough, malty biscuit, caramel and that familiar herbal English hops note. Almost a buttered toast flavour. Finish is typical Bitter, from the English hops, leaving a astringent coating on tongue. Nothing remarkable but would be best with pub food.
3.5 500ml bottle served in a barrel pint glass, cellar temperature. Dark amber ale, with a off white head. Looks like a typical old fashion English beer. Slightly malty, dried fruit aroma, with a hint of sulphur. A malty, fruit cake flavour with noticeable traditional hop aftertaste. A very pleasant typical premium bitter.
3.3 Aroma; malt, soft barley, grain, butter, meadow. Look; good fawn head, on clear amber copper body. No hazy last pour here. Taste; amber malt, caramel malt, bready malt, herbs, butter, grain, and finishes balanced. Feel; nice body and co². Overall; nice brew. [bottle from Händel Mändel. T@home near PivotekaH7. Thanx2 Rune for a great idea. Greetings to Lars "Due-Birre-Grandi" SkinnyViking, and everybody]
2.8 Lockdown March 2021 - the day Noel returned to school. 500ml dark bottle from the brewery. A hearty traditional ale - rather assertive for a best bitter. Good solid balance of chewy malt and robust earthy hops. I think I've been a little mean to this beer in the past, especially when considering my comments in 2002 regarding the burnt chocolate and faded heather notes in the beer. This is a solid traditional ale, well made, and very satisfying. [3.0] March, 2011 A fairly typical bottled British ale. Boiled candy sugar with a touch of toffee. Noticeable hop bitterness, though little hop fragrance. Some fresh oak. Some orange rind. Drinkable. Compared with Fursty Ferret, this is more robust, more serious and has a more distinct hop bitterness. I prefer the Ferret - but only just. [2.6] Oct, 2002 The hops hit hard at first - rough, bitter, uncompromising; all things Yorkshire spring to mind: windy treks across blasted moors, tub-thumping, plain speaking, clog-hopping, ferret-loving, flat-capped, troubled at t’mill, hardened Yorkshire men with chests puffed out, prodding you in the nipples and smirking, ’Where there’s muck, there’s brass.’ But then it slowly gentles to a still aggressive but interestingly roasted hedgehog fullness. Some burnt dark chocolate in the finish, and a memory of faded heather in the far reaches of the mouth. Not a beer I would rush back to, but an experience not to be missed. [2.7]
3.7 Good, comforting go-to ale.
3.3 Bottiglia.
2.1 Forgettable
3.4 For my bday
3.1 Bright brown colour. Aroma of herbs, malt, caramel and honey. Sweet start with light bitterness.
2.0 Aroma : Lightly toasted sweet toffee/biscuity maltiness, very light summer fruit hoppy undertone. Taste : As aroma. Has a longish bitter hoppy aftertaste, but doesn't have any real distinct flavours of note. Below average!
2.1 This is a very bitter bitter. Not my thing, but if you like bitters, this is probably going to appeal. Heavy hops taste. Not getting the malt. Chemical, cheap nose.
3.4 50cl bottle thanks to @simontomlinson and EuroSwap 2/2020. Pours clear amber with thin head. Aroma has toffee and granny smith apples. Taste is full and drier malts than expected with nice lingering bitterness. Nice one!
3.3 500ml bottle, BBE in 11 months. Pours amber with small white head; fine. Aroma is mainly malt but there is some earthy hops and chocolate coming through but all a bit muted. Taste of malts, grain, nuts, a little spice and quite sweet; nice. Low carbonation but quite smooth which is satisfying. Nice dry bitter finish. Good bitter.
1.2 Hazy amber with thin but persistent off white head. Yeast sediment in bottle. Aroma is very leafy and grassy with notes of burnt toast and marmalade. There is an odd dirty earthiness that seems yeast derived. A bit tart and quite sharp. Aggressive bitterness is unbalanced. Minimal base malt character, just crystal and/or amber malt. Maybe palatable with some greasy fish and chips, but not very pleasant on its own.
3.8 Pours dark amber with diminishing head. Strong toffee malts, woody, dried fruit notes, toasted bread, strong earthy hops, light bitterness. Hints of apple. Bitter hop finish, with more toasted notes. Average mouthfeel and carbonation. A classic-tasting amber ale.
3.3 500ml bottle. Pours clear amber with a white head. Aroma of malt. Sweetish toffee and malt taste. Bitter finish.
2.9 Deep amber with a foamy, off-white head, has a sweet malt aroma with a hint of caramel. A little over-carbonated giving a slightly harsh mouthfeel, the taste profile is fruity and malty with a hint of bitterness
3.9 500ml bottle brewed in England at 4.4%. Clear bronze-amber with a large but not quite overdone head. Rusky wheat and fruity pear hop aroma - nice! Lowish carbonation. Label lists five different hops in here, and it pays off; broad-spectrum crowded taste with pear, apple, and more rustic 'best bitter' vegetal notes working quite well together. Similarly, the brown bread malt is aided by some lighter wheat rusk. Black Sheep's flagship beer, and you can tell they put the effort in on this one. Very respectable supermarket fare, and has a unique character. Recommended to try.
2.3 Fin rund Amber øl. Passe humle. God ettersmak, men litt kort. Servert fra flaske av en god hyttenabo.
3.2 Pours an orange coloured beer with a white frothy head Notes of rich fruits and malty hops
1.2 zapach ciężki, karmel i suche karmelowe słody, dużo jabłka, skórek od jabłka i ogonków, lekko kwaśne, nadpsute owoce i łyko. kolor miedziany, klarowny, piana biała, skąpa i krótka. w smaku wytrawne, trochę jasnego karmelu, suszone, niewędzone śliwki, ogonki z jabłek, soszone zioła, kurz z szuflady kuchennej, lekka insulina i żelazistość. stara, czarna herbata, trochę oolong. goryczka wysoka, piołunowa, kurzowa, lekko chemiczna, długa, ściągająca i mało przyjemna. w ustach ściągające, kwaskowate i kurzowe, nieprzyjemne. nasycenie umairkowane do wysokiego. pite w terminie
3.8 Bottle from Tesco. Pours a crystal clear copper colour with a thin off white head. Aromas of malt, caramel, toffee, toasted bread and biscuits. Taste is the same notes as the aroma, more caramel and toffee with a slightly metallic and earthy hop palate. Some spice and hints of grass. Medium bodied with more earthy hop bitterness on the finish. Very good bitter.
3.0 Reasonable Amber ale. Not doing anything particularly unique or special but palatable.
3.7 Fles 50cl thuis. Bitter, kruidig, malten, caramel, fruittonen, droog, grassig. Prima. (1-11-2019).
3.2 Rocky tan head stayed on a toffee coloured still body. Caramel, malt & spice aroma. Medium bodied, creamy over the tongue with sharp clean back. Malt, roasted, nutty, berry, tea, spices & sugar tastes with tangy finish.
2.9 500ml bottle in 2013. Clear copper with a thin white head. Aroma of malt, caramel and berries. Some dried fruit and grassy hop notes, but mainly maltbomb.
3.1 Thanks dantomlinson for sharing! Amber body with a big, frothy and persistent white head. Aroma is toffee, herbal hops, a bit metallic. Taste is bitter, mineral. Very dry and bitter finish. Medium body, soft carbonation, oily texture.
