Blue Mountain Dark Hollow

Blue Mountain Dark Hollow

Dark Hollow blends the miracle of two crafts--brewing and distillation--to create a work greater than the sum of its parts. An Imperial Stout has been aged in charred American oak bourbon barrels still dripping with uncut whiskey. For 100 days the young beer patiently breathes in and out of the wood, gaining complexity, character, and serious attitude. This ale is always bottle conditioned and can be enjoyed immediately upon its release from the brewery...or five years later, when you dust off the last vintage bottle from your cellar to share with good company.

4.0 On tap while in Washington DC Dark chocolate aroma - very smooth and dangerous for a 10%
4.4 Opens with a robust aroma of roasted coffee, cocoa, and vanilla. Full black body with one finger of tan foam. As this stout warms it throws off scents of tobacco and whiskey. Feel is a gooey thickness, plenty of substance. Very roasty taste, bitter dark chocolate, and molasses. Slight kick at the finish.
4.0 Sampled on draught at Barrel & Bushel, Tyson’s Corner. This is a really powerful Imperial Stout, full of strong flavours. There is a dominant sweetness of vanilla, Demerara sugar and chocolate, followed by notes of liquorice, prune and leather. The mouthfeel is mostly a rather cloying sweetness. There is quite a bitter finish to offset the sugary notes. Not bad, but too much sugar.
4.2 Pn rap at Capital ale house. AROMA - roasted mat and cocoa APPEARANCE - stout black, tan head. FLAVOR - burnt caramel. dark chocolate, licorice, vanilla, coconut, cola. PALATE - full, tasty, alcohol not detected. OVERALL - I would buy again
3.6 This is a really nice stout, lots of coffee and roasted notes. Slight vanilla flavor from the barrel, rounds out the flavor profile. Good stuff.
3.6 From bottle, big roasted notes, dark cacao, ash and porto fruit tones. Roasted bitterness, plum.
3.7 Served on draft. Black color with minimal head. Bourbon vanilla chocolate. Booze finish. Heavy body.
3.8 Dégustée le 2017-09-06. .
3.9 Bottle shared with pilsnertest. Pours black with a small off-white head. Aroma is pretty bourbon forward with earthy wood, molasses, chocolate and a light roast. Taste is similar with bourbon, oak, vanilla and chocolate. A weak hint of stale cardboard, I might have been holding on to this one just a bit too long. Still highly enjoyable though.
3.6 2017 RIS tasting, 2017 vintage on the bottle. Maybe should have held it a little longer. Black, oily pour, head a bit darker than the previous ones. some of the bourbon comes through in the aroma for some boozy scent, nice roast grains, small amount of sweetness. Taste adds some more woody, barrel notes, some chocolate, some fruitiness, which doesn’t seem out of place. A bit of heat form the alcohol too.
3.7 Bottle. Pours a black color with a small off-white head. Has a roasted malty chocolate vanilla aroma. Roasted malty woody chocolate vanilla flavor. Has a roasted malty woody caramel chocolate and vanilla finish.
4.3 $11.99 bomber from Wine Warehouse. Pours thick and black with a small brown head. Amazing aroma of coffee, chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, oak. Flavor is vanilla and chocolate, light coffee, oak, bourbon. Slight sweet, very delicious.
3.7 Dark brown color with thin light brown head an little lacing. Aroma and flavor have strong oak and bourbon characteristics. Roasty malts. Thin mouthfeel with a little alcohol burn. Okay overall.
2.7 Insipid dark brown pour with a wispy weak khaki tan head. Nose is not appealing. Papery and stale malts with some dark grain and toast. Wood and weak bourbon show as well. Flavor is not great. Sharp alcohol and lots of dried fruits. Prune and raisin with a rich caramel sweetness. Bitter grain and an astringent finish.
4.1 Bottle from Solidfunk, big thanks Pours a solid black with a frothy creamy tan head that persists. Roasty earthy with hints of molasses and dark pitted fruits. Sweet brown sugary malts in the flavor with bits of oak bourbon and hints of vanilla and coconut. Bit of an alcohol warming this one is definitely a sipper but its also pretty damn tasty too.

4.0 Black colour, tan head. Aroma of coffee, wood, vanilla, bourbon and liquorice. Malty flavour, loads of coffee, hops, wood, vanilla and liquorice. Finish vanilla and wood. (from 75cL bottle @ RBBSG IV, the Hot and Sweaty Edition, Gent 2015. Thanks for sharing, tderoeck(?)!)
3.9 Sample pour at GABF. Aroma of bourbon, malts, and wood. Taste is rich, complex, and smooth. This is an excellent BA beer, highly recommended! Thumbs way up!
3.8 BOTTLE 75 CL. Pitch black, espresso head. Strong bourbon and oak vanilla nose, some milky chocolate. The taste is also strong on barrel notes, but the base beer is quite balanced, with the sweetness kept well under control. Light chocolate and dark caramel notes, strong bitter finish and light booze. Smooth mouthfeel and quite easy-drinking. A good balanced impy.
4.0 Celebrating the special occasion of accepting a new job and giving my two weeks notice with this luxurious brew! From about a year old bottle, this pours an impressive jet black with a subtle espresso accent, with a surprisingly full dark khaki head. Aroma is very boozy, smells like straight up whiskey and alcohol, with vanilla and char. On the palate, this is exceptionally smooth and not as boozy as one may expect in the finish, rich and full bodied, reminiscent of chocolate milk. Lots of complex flavors to be discerned, roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla, bourbon, quite enjoyable. Finishes with a coffee bean and roast malt aftertaste, like a classic stout in the end. Very well done!
4.6 Pours pitch black with a small brown head fading to tan. Smells of bourbon, vanilla, chocolate, and roast. Taste is dark chocolate, vanilla, oak, and bourbon. Full-bodied with a smooth texture and soft mouth-carbonation, Blue Mountain Dark Hollow finishes with a lot of vanilla oakiness.
4.0 Pours up black with a small creamy tan head. Aroma of chocolate, bourbon, roasted malts, vanilla, and booze. Flavor is bourbon up front, vanilla, roasted malts, dark chocolate. You taste and feel the booze in this one. Full bodied, soft carbonation. Nicely done!
4.0 Pours pitch black with a small but lacy tab head. Bourbon is in the forefront, but lots of vanilla comes out. Thick creamy mouthfeel. Sweet with some cocoa powder and a good degree of bourbon. Strong and flavorful. Nice clean but rich fade. Well done for a bourbon beer.
4.0 Bottle. Black pour, thick tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, vanilla, coffee, chocolate and caramel. Flavor is quite bitter, smooth, coffee and oak. Very well balanced.
3.9 Bottle shared with Simonsen at Hvaler Pours quite dark, thin tanned head. Smell of bourbon, vanilla, oak, cocoa, coffee and dark malts. Heavy sweet, booze, oak, bourbon, vanilla, chocolate, dark malts. Moderate bitter, earthy and boozy tail. Good stuff
3.8 Bottle. This is a big ol beast of a stout with a lot going on in the background. Nice and roasted with good bourbon balance.
4.2 5 oz pour on draft at Barrel & Bushel, Tysons Corner Center. Dark brownish black with tan head. Aromas mainly of big dark and milk chocolates. Tastes of big dark and milk chocolate, roast, light booze. Medium-full body with a dry finish. Better than I remember it being when I first had it a few years ago.
