Blue Point Sour Cherry Imperial Stout

Blue Point Sour Cherry Imperial Stout

Truly worthy its majestic name in fluid ounces, our Sour Cherry Imperial Stout is anything but sour. In fact, we have to make sure there’s plenty of it available for Valentine’s Day – after all, nothing says love like chocolates and a Sour Cherry Imperial Stout. This is an extremely complex version of the classic Russian beer style with plenty of roasted, black, and chocolate malts that delivers multi-layered coffee and sherry notes in a surprisingly smooth package. The beer is then matured with just a kiss of real sour red cherries. If you see Sour Cherry Imperial Stout on tap, give it a try – like true love, it’s sometimes hard to find.

3.7 Bottle kindly shared by Cuso, thanks. Pours dark brown color, beige head. Aroma of coffee, cherries, plums, chocolate. Taste is sweet, roasted malt, coffee, cherries, chocolate.
3.6 Pours very dark brown with a foamy and very leggy tan head. Aroma is coffee malts and a touch of plum. Taste is chocolate, coffee - more bitter malts- plum wine and, of course, a touch of cherry. Slightly sour bitterness in the aftertaste. Opens up with some warming. Interesting. Good.
3.4 Draft sample. Deep brown with small tan head. Sour cherries with roasted and chocolate malts. More interesting than good.
2.7 Walnut aroma with faint plum. Black, thick tan head. Tree bark, sour plum, some vegetal notes. Medium body. Eh, I don’t like fruited stouts, and this one I particularly didn’t like.
3.5 9/13/2014. On tap. Dark brown with a tan head. Roasted malt, chocolate, cherries and coffee. Bitter malt flavors, amplified by the cherries, yet with balance. Smooth finish.
2.8 I’ve had other Blue Point beers that I thought were good. I’m not crazy about this one. It’s got kind of a medicine taste.
3.1 Bottle. Pours muddy, midnight black with decent tan head. Aroma is black cherry, dark chocolate, a bit of espresso. Taste is bitter/sour cherry right up front. It doesn’t develop any sweetness or real body. The malts kick in with a bit of the advertised chocolate/coffee, but it feels like a weird mix here.
4.0 Maybe a hint of sour cherry, so for those that aren't fans of sour beers should not steer away from this brew. It is a delicious imperial stout!
3.6 Pours deep mahogany into a snifter. Mocha head with medium retention recedes to skim surface. Chocolate and sour funk aromas. Soft with dark chocolate and cherry front to back. Lasting warming finish.
4.0 On tap at EBF smooth with chocolate , coffee and hints of cherry.
3.7 22oz bomber thanks to JohnGonk. Poured a thin dark brown color with a thick frothy tan head. Aroma is nice. Some tart funk, sour cherry, roasted malt, and milk chocolate. Taste of tart cherries and funk up front, followed by roasted malt, light char, and chocolate in the finish.
3.8 On tap in Detroit, MI The second beer I ordered was a much better draft. A standard imperial stout with a dash of sour cherries tasted almost like a blend of Belgian Red and Old Rasputin. If you can’t get it locally you can come close with a custom blend. Aroma / Appearance - Creamy black ink sits idly in the glass. An ivory white head is a nice decoration with an edge the color of newspaper scraps. Malt, cherry bits, coffee, ash, and anise over a bed of plums create a dark fruity profile. Flavor / Palate - Ash, Bing cherries, and ripe plums set a positive tone. A transition of anise carries the creamy mouthfeel towards a robust finish. Other than a slight burst of green apples this is an excellent imperial stout. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to try something different.
3.9 Brownish black with a tan head. Aroma contains some chocolate, caramel, and cherries. The flavor is rather sweet with some chocolate, cherries, and some raisins. A mild sour finish with little evidence of booze. Overall a good imperial stout.
3.7 Pours cola brown with a thin cream-colored head. Aroma of sour cherry, roasted malt, and hint of coffee. Sour cherry flavor with some vanilla, chocolate and roasted malt. Very nice beer.
3.8 bottle. really liked this concoction - the cherry paired amazingly with the imperial stout style. I savored every taste. Killer beer
2.3 The cherry is overwhelming. This destroys the overall character of the stout.
3.5 Draft pour into a snifter at the Sybarite Pig in Boca Raton, Fl. Mostly black in color with a small off-white head. Some mild lacing. The aroma was decent with hints of dark chocolate, roasted malts, very light cherry, and vanilla. The taste was similar. It certainly wasn’t cherry heavy...matter of fact I think I’d like a little more cherry flavor. But overall it was fine. Dark chocolate, hint of cocoa nibs, vanilla, and roasted malts. Dry finish. Medium body for the style. Booze well hidden.
3.1 http://imgur.com/l3wQSAb - Bomber. Pours opaque brown with tan head that lasts and laces a bit. Smells of vanilla with an astringent note. Drinks smoothly with mild lingering bitterness. Medium bodied. Tastes of coffee and vanilla. Finishes with a slight stringency. No cherry flavor. Buries its alcohol content quite well.
2.7 Bottle. Black with no head. Smells of toasted malt and burnt sugar. Dry chocolaty ish sweetness but no cherry.
3.9 Bottle. Black pour with a tall, frothy tan head. Aroma is strong roasted malt, coffee notes, dark fruit, hints of sour cherry, cherry cough syrup and dark chocolate. Taste is chocolate covered sour cherries and roasted malt with coffee notes, burnt caramel, dark fruit and dark chocolate brownies. Body is medium-full with a strong, bubbly carbonation. Light warmth as well. Ends with more chocolate covered cherries, dark fruit, roasted malt, coffee notes, burnt caramel and smoky wood. Nice!
2.6 Great expectations would be a better name for this beer. It looks great dark chocolate colour with a thick creamy head. Aroma of malt and chocolate with a complex taste that disappoints. The palate is extremely phenolic and chemically acidic with a hint of burnt band aids.
3.4 The head makes up more than 50% of the glass. Like washing machine sis. Great color. Dark Chocolate malted milk balls aroma. The taste is complex, real acidic palate to it. Interesting beer. Mellows as you go.
3.7 Poured from a room temperature bottle. Dark brown color, full tan frothy head. Dark chocolate roasted malt aroma. Very acidic flavors mixed with a tart roasted chocolate and phenolic malt finish.
2.5 Had this at a recent tasting. Nothing really at all memorable about this. Don’t recall any sourness at all.
2.1 didnt get much sour, or cherry, and as a stout itself, it was pretty forgettable.
4.4 Bottle. Dark, but thin visual appeal. Head is firm and holding. Chalky, baking chocolate aroma. Bountiful drink ... rich with full chocolate in the background, a nice cherry pie swirl in the front. Good, good stuff. (#5428, 2/7/2014)
3.5 On tap 6.5 oz. Pour at Carpool in Herndon, VA. Opaque, near black with a finely creamy tan head and excellent lacing. Aroma of roasted malt with subtle sour cherries and chocolate. Taste of dark fruit, roasted malt, sour cherries, chocolate, licorice. Sweet, roasty and gently tart. Medium body and low/medium carbonization.
3.4 On tap at The Beer Store Wilson. Black hue, zero visibility with mostly lasting caramel head. Heavy malt, chocolate & alcohol on the nose. Chocolate and some dark fruit up front with some smoke & coffee on the finish. I was looking for the sour cherry but didn’t find it. Oily on the palate. Was an okay stout.
4.0 22 oz. bottle from Total Wine, Chesapeake, VA. Dark brown pour with a frothy khaki head. Aroma of smoke, dark chocolate, and faint dark fruit. Flavor is good with espresso and chocolate, smoky malts, and just a touch of cherry on the finish. Honestly, I barely tasted the cherry until about the 3rd sip but it is indeed there. This one grows on me after a while and is quite enjoyable. I have tried a few mediocre offerings from Blue Point but this is not one of them. Nice beer.
3.4 Not a bad beer. Ok stout. Where is the sour cherry flavor. If I was given this blind folded, no way would have thought sour cherry. It was a good stout , but you could get better .
