Blue Point Toxic Sludge

Toxic Sludge is our version of the relatively new Black IPA style. Care should be taken to not spill this heavy ale, as the results could be disastrous, so please consume BP Toxic Sludge responsibly. Hopped at four stages of the brewing process, we combined a hoppy India Pale Ale with a richer, darker malt base for a full bodied beer that’s big on flavor. This limited release, specialty brew was crafted to benefit birds affected by BP’s 2010 Gulf oil spill. 100% of the proceeds go to Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research for their “Spreading Our Wings” campaign. 3.3 Pleasantly grassy and also kind of nutty. Dark, reddish brown as opposed to black. Moderate bitter, finishes with a lasting chocolate-fruit sweetness. Much sweeter than many examples. Also has a smoother feel too it. A most approachable version of a dark IPA. Nice charitable tie in too.
4.0 Pours almost pitch black with a finger of brown foam that coats the sides of the glass. Aroma is nicely hoppy, with grassy and earthy tones. First sip has a rush of plum sweetness quickly followed by a nice earthy hop flavor. Finishes bitter, but not tongue curling. There is substantial body and residual sweetness to this brew, which helps balance the hop flavor and bitterness quite nicely.
4.1 16oz can. Nice large off-white head of fine and dense bubbels. Light milk chocoalte, roasted grains, a hint of ginger and some light piney hops. Color is a dark brown with a touch of red. Moderate malty body with some toasted bread, light chocolate malts, licorice and some floral and herbal flavors. Moderate bitterness but melds very well with the malt body and other flavors. Extreamly easy drinking and goes down welcomingly. My only gripe is that I don’t have any more. I could drink this stuff every day. So smooth and delicious. Yummy!!
3.2 Aroma - the aroma isn’t overly present. Sort of disappointing. What I did discern was hops of course, dark malts, and a little roast. Appearance - appearance is jet black, with a thin white head that dissipates and turn into a halo. The beer also has a lacing that follows down the glass. Taste - the taste has rich dark malts, and well balanced hops. Palate - the feel is medium in body, ranging from creamy to slick in feel. The finish is nicely bitter, not over the top.
3.3 Pours a deep mahogany with a light creamy head (drank in Dogfish IPA glass). Strong floral notes dominate the initial nose but fade to roasty maltiness. Drinks like a medium-hopped IPA with a hint of sweet caramel. Not bad but it seems a bit out of balance to me. The bitterness lingers on the palate and it finishes with a crisp hit of citrus.
3.3 (can - 16 oz) Dark brown with a thin off-white head. Mild hop and chocolate aroma. Bitter hop flavor with a lightly roasted followup. Smooth finish with a very lightly bitter aftertaste. A bit of chocolate and roasted malt at the tail end.
3.1 From can. Mild hop aroma, grainy with light herbal notes. Some hop funk, dank nutty undertones. Dark coppery amber clear with off-white foamy lacing head. Medium body with medium-high carbonation. Starts moderately sweet with caramel, mild oxidation notes, cherry wood. Tons of hop flavor and bitterness, with light funky-dank hop oils. Finish is nutty with muted bitterness, light carbonic tang. Smooth after.
3.5 Can. Pours a murky dark brown that allow a little bit of highlighting an supports a decent tan head. Aromas are weakly grainy with a little bit of darkness and a touch of floral hops. Flavor is fair enough, but the hops presence is mostly just bitterness... not a great direction to blast the palate.
3.2 Disappointing. It’s a pretty beer, a dark ruby that looks black from afar. It’s the fact that there’s more of a corn flavor than hops that makes this disappointing.
3.3 From a Can.The pour is a clear brown with a white head. The beer has a roasty and bitter hop taste. The texture is slick with a bitter aftertaste. Not bad
3.4 Can at Percy Street BBQ, PHL, 29/11/13. Very dark mahogony brown with a moderate light tan covering that reduces to edgework. Nose is dank hops, light tropicals, grapefruit, earthy cocoa, pine. Taste comprises light roast, cocoa powder, light metallic tang, hint of pine, grapefruit. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, dry finale with subtle hop bitterness. OK CDA but pretty middle of the road for the style.
3.7 A: Dark Brown/Reddish Hue, Passes Mild Light, Off White Head, Some Lacing S: Mildly Roasted Chocolate Malts T: Piney, Roasted Chocolate Malts M: Decent Carbonation, Medium Bodied, Mildly Bitter, Mildly Sticky Overall, I didnt have high expectations for this beer but it actually isnt bad, not over bearing on the malts or the hops, nice balance.
3.7 Dark brown with a large brown creamy head. Aroma of dark roasted malts, chocolate, multigrains and citrus. Taste of dark roasted malts, chocolate and citrus with a chocolaty finish that is somewhat bitter.
3.3 Pint-sized can from Tasty Beverage Co., Raleigh, NC. Dark brown pour with a frothy tan head. Cola-like sweet aroma at first with tangerine hops making their way through eventually. Citrusy hops are evident in the flavor and are certainly muted by cocoa and smoke from the malt. The mouthfeel is surprisingly thin for this style and certainly given the name. A decent black IPA.
3.7 Pours dark copper/amber with a frothy head. Aromas caramel, pine, citrus hops, light roasted malt and grass. Flavors citrusy, grassy, light caramel and some light roasted malt undertones. Medium sweet and medium bitter. Pretty decent. 16oz can.
3.2 1 pint can. Poured a brown color with a smaller sized off white head. Roast, chocolate, with some dank green / floral hoppiness.
3.5 16oz can. Poured a very dark amber color with a one finger bubbly off white head. Coffee and roast are the dominant aromas with some sweet chocolate and piney hop notes also present. Taste has bitter coffee and roast up front with a huge piney hop presence. Some sweet cocoa and brown sugar notes help balance out the bitterness. Medium body with some sticky hop oils present, and light carbonation.
2.9 Not a big fan of black IPAs and this one might be bottom of the barrel. I would most likely pass on this one next time.
3.0 On tap at Bocktown Robinson. Nice black IPA. Nothing spectacular. Aroma was decent. Roasted malt with a green hoppy undertone. Pour was a nice deep dark brown with a one finger off white head. Taste was a little weak, but not bad. Roasted bitter malt with no sweetness doubles with the green leafy hop flavor. Light carbonation and a short wet finish.
3.6 $2.80 can from Wine Warehouse, Charlottesville. Pours dark brown with a large beige head. I expected this to be more "sludge" like. Smells of pine and grapefruit. tastes of pine, grapefruit, cold coffee, soap, some spice... leftover stale coffee.
3.6 16 ounce can before softball, poured a dark brown color with aromas of coffee grounds, and light citrusy hops. Flavors are the same, earth, light coffee, and citrusy hops, nice beer overall.
3.2 Shiny red/brown with dimpled tan head. Aroma is an herby hop liqueur. Taste is pretty muted, and underdelivers based on aroma and name. Carbonation seems a bit low. $3/16oz
3.8 Had to buy this a) for the name and b) because I love black IPAs. Comes out of the can a slightly hazy sepia with a thick, fluffy, persistent khaki head that leaves substantial lacing. Roast malt aroma has a strong woody hop overtone and hints of caramel and chocolate. Flavor is quite hoppy but not bitter, with notes of semi-sweet chocolate, caramel and roast malt. Texture is on the thin side, and not too fizzy, but that is a minor downer. Drinking beer for a good cause - does it get any better?
4.2 16oz can from udbeernut. Thanks! Pours a clear dark brown almost black. Aroma of coffee with a little citrus. Taste is medium bitter. Roasty coffee and chocolate with herbal and grassy hops. Im really digging this beer. Pretty sure i could drink this everyday.
3.2 Pint can: Aroma is big hops up front with spicy grapefruit note to it. Pours a clear blackish/ amber with a very thick off white head that lingers. Taste has got a nice hop texture with the candied texture I don’t like in some hops. Some light malt texture with some caramel malt notes. Palate is medium to high carbonation with a lingering hop note in the aftertaste. Overall, Pretty good. Cheers!
3.5 16oz can poured into a pint glass. Opaque dark brown with a big airy head. Dark cocoa aroma, roasted malts, piney hops and faint vanilla notes. Dry roasty flavors, med-hi bitterness, dark chocolate, and resinous hops. Med-full body, long finish, could be a bit smoother, but overall not bad at all.
2.5 Sampled from a 16 oz can this beer poured a black color with caramel highlights and a huge foamy brown head that lingered and left decent lacing. The aroma was malty, toasty, malted milk and floral hops. The flavor was bitter, roasty and almost sour with cocoa, malt, anise, floral hops and that terrible old McDonalds coffee that always reminded me of rancid battery acid. Medium length bitter old school McDonalds coffee, anise and floral hops. Not good.
4.2 A delicious black IPA! Not as hoppy as some IPA’s, very smooth with a strong flavor. Highly recommended for IPA lovers.
3.9 Black pour at hop cat. Very white foamy head. Malty and smooth. Grains and earthy taste. Good shit
3.6 Can Poured into a glass. Dark Brown appearance with a very light brown head that laces a bunch. Smells chocolaty and hoppy. Some coffee in there too. Taste is a little thin. Some light coffee, dark roasted malts, bitter hops. tastes pleasant but a bit bland.
